I am looking to replace my Trinity and right now the iPhone is the top contender (I am with AT&T anyway.)
But I'd love to keep the flexibility I get from WM, and have finally made my Trinity rock solid (it hasn't crashed in weeks
The big thing for me is the screen, I like 3.5 and I like the resolution - the Omnia just doesn't look as good to me, plus its screen is smaller.
Is HTC, or someone else, coming out with something new, soon, which will have the screen, the memory (16gb is good) and is also a decent looking phone?
Anyone know?

Uh wtf?
Anyways. Back on topic. WAIT FOR THE AT&T TOUCH PRO. Nuff said.
Silly wabbit! iPhones are for kids.... Any anyone else without enough brain matter to operate a WM device.
If there is too much time on your contract to bail, I'd say wait for the Touch!
Unfortunately, the Touch Pro only has a 2.8" screen, which is a big disadvantage, compared to the 3.5" screen on the iPhone.
I am looking for at least 3.5".
(and since I had my Wizard, I've decided that slider keyboards are useless to me.)
For a screen that size you will need something like a Sedna.
I personally just got the I900. I had an IPhone for a month and I definitely prefer the Omnia I900. However it only has a 3.2" screen and you want 3.5".
I would have gotten a Sedna as I wanted a bigger screen, but at the last minute I got an Omnia and I am really happy with it.
The Touch Pro looks nice, that would probably be my second choice. The omnia has the best on screen keyboard I have seen so far. It not particularly special in any way other than the fact that it works well in Portrait and in landscape with the autmatic rotate function I can rapidly get precise, fast two thumb typing going by just rotating the phone (assuming I have two hands free.)
I have iTouch and have to say that I love it`s touch-screen accuracy, much better than in wm-phones with 2.8" screen, it is just so tiny compared to 3.5" screen.. I usualy do wlan with wmwifirouter and browse net using iTouch since it has bigger resolution and 3.5" screen which doesn`t need stylus + Safari is fast !
One thing what I don`t understand is this 2.8" Wmphonemania, why are they not making 3.5" screens on them ? And 3.2mp cameras are oldish, I love N95 5mp camera, it just takes so good shots, I am jealous :>
But either Symbian or iPhone`s OS, cannot beat WinMo as an operating system :X

like for sex size doen't matter... the real problem is: what will be your use of your next phone...
i have tried both one week (iPhone3g and diamond) and i goes diamond because iPhone is too much limited for my use... try both and see what will be your's
How about the Dream?
I am amazed that noone mentioned the HTC Dream. The first Android phone to hit the market will be released on October 13th. Check it out.
Anything Comparable to the iPhone Coming Out On the WM Side? (Quote)
Just surf this forum and you will find a lot of nice options:
HTC G1
HTC HD
etc...
This was exactly the question I was working on for a number of months. Although I also added in, "And won't cost me an arm and a leg".
It finally came down to the Daxian T32/x999+ (Chinese iPhone-ish clone) and the HTC Blue Angel. If the T32 had some buttons that could be used in gaming like the HTC I would've gone with that I think, but I got the HTC Blue Angel instead and it's great.
Of course this is my first PDA, so maybe I'm easily impressed.
Anything else out there either costs WAY too much or has a much smaller screen, or even both. It's too bad nobody is taking the Blue Angel and reworking it with today's technology to make it sleeker and better. Great little machine so far!

How about this?
I think it's called HTC Touch HD. Don't know if HD stands for High Definition.
Anyway, this phone for sure has your requirement of 3.5 screen.
If so whats it like ? Just due an upgrade soon and wondered if it was any good compared to my previous HTC phones (currently Touch 256mb) and the HTC Vario 2 before that.
The screen is one thing that worries me the Vario 2 and the Touch both have a decent screen size the touch is QVGA. the Vario IV is VGA is this better worse or what?
bit of info on the phone would be appriciated as I am stuck as T- Mobile have the worst selection of phones avalaible. Not Touch HD or anything.
Yes, this is MDA Vario IV. The VGA resolution helps a lot - it looks on Touch Pro/Raphael/Vario IV far better, but it has to do something with the improved display quality too.

QVGA means 'Quarter VGA' - VGA is 4x better resolution. The touch pro is a good phone, but it depends what your gonna use it for. No offense, but if you don't even know the differance between VGA and QVGA, then I doubt you will make full use of the phones features and it will be an expensive toy to make calls and send texts.
I suggest think about what you want from a phone, and lookign around at your choices.
Hi there
The screen quality is better than any of the other htc phones that I have previously owned.
That said, I have since realised that I miss the screen size of my ameo. Mind you it is nice to have a phone that fits in your pocket!!!
On reflection I think that the touch pro 2 (aka vario v) withit's larger screen would suit me better- my bad for being impatient I guess.
T-mob claim that the vario v will be available from next month

I know what the phone can do currently use my ELFIN for most things sync email, wireless router, rdp and i know what QVGA, VGA and WVGA mean. I just havent seen one in the flesh yet and had mixed info on if the screen size is any good.
I believe that our screens are marginally smaller than yours- if you are happy to have a slightly smaller screen then go for it- if not wait for the pro 2(vario v).
Having previously had an athena I was spoiled wrt the screen size- frankly I find zooming in and out of web pages to be a pain.
Google maps on a screen this size is not as useful as the athena(ameo).
Overall I like my vario iv but will probably upgrade to the vario v at some point.
Personally, the main reason i upgraded from the Kaiser (Vario III) was for the VGA screen. yes, the IV has big changes apart from that, its much shinier, and has less buttons (that took some getting used to, as i used to have all the buttons custom mapped) - however, if you use the Elfin, you should be used to that.
The IV is much bigger than the Elf (i'm assuming the Elfin is in the same form factor - never played with an enhanced one) but not really bigger than the Vario II - go play with one in a shop before you upgrade!
Also, as you appear to have gone away from having a slide out keyboard, do you want one? (again personally once i had one [Wizard] i cant go back!) if no, try the Diamond (Compact IV) its very similar in looks to the Vario IV, and, as i understand it, the functionality is pretty similar (watch out - the original ones didnt have a SD slot. Not sure what version T-Mob are selling)
As always, the phone is under powered & pretty crap out the box, but if you read enough info here & flash the rom & radio, you should be able to get a very good replacement which can do everything your old haul of phones can do, and more!
As always, it depends on exactly what you want from your device - but if you can live with the size, the Raphael gives you a decent VGA screen, built in GPS, HSDPA and if you're really bored, you can always make calls on it!
If you want any specific info, say what you want, remember, most people here will like their phone (otherwise they'd have changed it!) so 70-90% of the comments here will be about what the phone can do, and how great it is!
I need a new phone, I hope someone can help me decide. Currently using a Nokia E71x, but I need a WM device so I can run Communicator Mobile to IM with my colleagues. I will need a touch screen device (WM Pro), preferably candy bar with qwerty keyboard (non-slider) however I'm willing to try a slider again, if I can easily one-hand type on it (drive-n-type). Also willing to try one without qwerty like iPhone or Blackstone. It absolutely must be responsive, if I cant make a call immediately without waiting for my device to "do it's thing" it the most irratating thing in the world...!
Here are some phones I've recently owned:
E71x - A good phone. It is crippled compared to the E71, but it's stable and does the job, also has fast GPS lock, and overall minimal lag on this device.
E75 - Lot's of lag, build quality not as good as E71 (keys were flimsy) and it seemed buggy, maybe I had a bad one.
Treo Pro - Great form factor, very laggy OS (not enough RAM in this thing?), poor build quality (case crack), poor battery life.
E71 - Awesome phone, was only missing touch screen, otherwise perfect, work made me ditch it.
Touch Pro - Seemed a bit laggy to me, not very durable (plastic feeling).
Tilt - Seemed laggy, wasn't liking the keyboard.
Treo 750 - No comment.
Yeah, I'm pretty picky.. I'm liking the Blackstone T8285 but I think it's out of my price range. What about the Xperia X1, is that a pretty responsive device? I recall seeing a review (phonedog I think) and he was suprised it was quite laggy. Are there any phone with like 600mhz-1000mhz proc and 512MB that are afforable?
Thanks for all/any help!

Hmm that a really old phone though, I bet it's as slow or slower than my Treo 750 was.
How is the Xperia? Anyone?
Edit: Oh I see why you suggested it, it has 600mhz proc. Hmmmm... Anyone have this device??
Go for the HTC TP2 now, then trade up to a used Leo later
Hi,
I am looking to replace my MDA Compact IV with either the HTC HD2 or the Toshiba TG01 or iPhone 3GS.
I have not really seen either of these phones properly, but have read reviews online.
Does anyone have any views on which is the better phone??
I have thown the iPhone in as a comparison, but would rather stick with a WM based phone.
right off the back i say the hd2 its packing a 1gz snapdragon processor. switching from the iphone and going to the hd2 u well be please. It basically the touch pro 2 with out a keyboard but the tp2 is packing a 512mb processor.
But i say get the HD2 ur getting a fast phone, better cam, look better and you can tweak your phone etc. idk it the shi lol
DONT GET THE TOSHIBA TG01!!!
I sold mine after only a few weeks, here are the problems i found after upgrading to windows mobile 6.5
1) the funky home screen stopped moving in 3D and only kinds slid across the screen
2) the g-sensor is crap somtimes u turn the phone and nothing happens, then you turn it back and it will quickly flick from landsacape to portrait
3) programs stored on the SD card, the icons would disapear after a soft reset, only leaving the generic blue and white .exe icon in there place
4)the phone is 2 thin and thus the sylus cannot be house in the housing like a htc device making it awfull to use, always saying to ur mates "DID U SEE WHERE I PUT MY STYLUS" lol
5) in landscape mode the wm start menu looks awfull and only takes up the middle section of the screen
6)there are black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, you dont notice when using a pitch black theme like "htc black//0 but use a colourful one and it looks like the top bar has dropped down a bit and it very annoying lol
i could prob remember more if you gave me a minute lol GET THE HTC HD 2

the tgo1 has the 1gig snapdragon processor too, it only has 288mb of ram compaired to the hd 2's 512mb
Thanks for the replies, looks like it will be the HD2 then given the responses.
Does anyone know what the battery life is like on the HD2 as I can only get approx 2 days from my current MDA compact IV (Diamond Touch) which is really annoying.
Also, now my mda is out of contract, may have a go at changing the rom. Which are the best roms for it??
Don't know if it is of any importance for you but TG01 has USB host and it was confirmed that mouse, keyboards and gamepads work very well with it. Don't know about flash drives though.

Check out XDA's Leo HD2 section of the forum. It has all the answers, info, & detailed threads for you...
BTW, I highly recommend the Leo!
HD2. no doubt
I can't have an opinion on the TG01, as I have not tried it. I own an iphone 3GS and recently replaced a touch HD with touch HD2.
The HD2 is, by far, superior to any phone I ever used. I have been with ETEN, and HTC for over 4 years, and iphone since the first generation. The [email protected] is the one. On any given category- it's a winner.
Screen is amazing. Capacitive (multi finger) like the iphone, but resolution is much better and 4.3" is a killer screen. GPS apps are killing the iphone in any comparison. Don't get fooled by 85,000 apps on the apple store. 84,850 of them will have no use for you, and the ones that are- you will find WM app that does the same.
Compatibility with Exchange server and outlook (actually all office apps) - HD2 wins big time again.
Keyboard- HD2 again. though the iphone is about the same, the HD2 has a wide screen. It helps a lot.
Reception - it's a phone after all - HD2 wins again (on AT&T network in the US). sound is crystal clear.
CPU speed- HD2 wins again. The snapdragon is a monster.
Battery life - OK, you can't win them all. The iphone has a better battery life, BUT I have two batteries and the HD2 wins again (with a cheat). Can't have the iphone battery out that easy.
BT - the HD2 wins again with great stereo that the 3GS can dream of having.
Music - no need for the stupid itune app. For me, it was annoying. I have 2 laptops and could never have itunes work right for me because you need to work around syncing your device. Not to mention I had hard time moving purchased songs from the ipod to the phone. You need to beg apple folks to support you after you have already paid. with the HD2 you simply put the MP3 on the SD card and you are done.
SD card- HD2 wins big time with 32G support, and replaceable cards. iphone is 16G at best and that's about it.
Camera- Until the HD2 I was thinking iphone has a great camera. Boy how wrong i could be. The HD2 with a dual LED flash wins again. Just make sure to have the camera bug fixed with a cab install and it is winning again.
Lastly- HTC is the Mercedes-Benz of phones. Apple came up with a great device but HTC eventually came out with a better one. Toshiba? Great TV sets, no doubts, but phones? They are far behind, IMO...

Keep in mind the HD2 came out a fair while after the TG01... I don't know if it's really fair to say Toshiba is behind, if anything HTC was behind for a little while in terms of hardware...
But of course right now I would say HD2 is the way to go...
Toshiba is old. I'd get an HD2!
Gday everyone, this thread is basically just a excuse to vent....
I hope they get a 100% stable version of Android to make my phone actually a decent phone...., though i doubt it will be soon.
The HTC Touch pro is just a piece of un usable ****. Custom or stock roms, they are much of a muchness and i still hate this laggy phone.........Very dissapointed, it sounds excellent on paper, (Camera, GPS, Wifi. All awesome idea's, but the wif is low powered, the GPS Sucks and is basically unusable, and the camera is pretty poor considering others that were available at the time) but is just crap in practice.
Can't wait till my contract is up so i can get rid of this flop of a phone!
Am i the only one who is disappointed in this phone?
Why did you bought it,when it is sooooo crappy? If you don't like it,sell it and buy a new crap. Actually,I am a bit disappointed of it too, especially GPS is unusable and the Wifi only with good signal. Yes,it is laggy sometimes, but I can live with it. There are many different reasons, why we are using WM instead of Android and that's the development. There is a lot of people here, they understand almost everything about this device,so we can fully customize apps and user experience. I have an Android as well and that is just a toy in comparison with WM,eventough WM is outdated for some individuals.
Honestly. If the GPS worked. And the wifi was a lil better. The lag would be tolerable. At the time i thought it was great. But a few weeks go by and i think to myself. I should have gotten a iphone. Ive had the phone for about 18 months. In 6 months its upgrade time. Thank god i can get rid of it!
The phone is a bit laggy, yes, especially when typing, but I have no problem at all with the GPS. Quick fix, usually under 40 seconds, and never loses signal after that. Before I updated the radio it was a little worse, but even then far from unusable.
Of course you can't expect a phone released 18 months ago to perform as well as the new ones (with Android especially), but I don't think there was a better phone on the market when it was released.
If it weren't for Android I would be pretty happy with my phone. But now that Android exists I really want to have it, so I'm planning on upgrading to a Desire soon.
I'm Happy
No problems @ all GPS fix in about 25 secs, camera is poor on nearly every HTC device have a digi slr and if not on me the phone suffices, nothing laggy about it.
Planning on updating to android but not due to being disappointed in phone just want to try something new to me.
I am happy with mine, but like most people always want the newest thing out there. I have never had a problem with the GPS, using Sprint Navigation, TomTom, Tracky it always works, fast to get sats.
I have the standard rom, with some of the tweaks found here.
I'm happy with mine, camera is ok (have some good images), GPS works, wifi works, not too laggy & is far more powerfull OS than iphone or Android.
I'm using TAEL standard 6.5.5 ROM & a few tweaks & it's a pleasure to use.
Most bad experiances are due to unlucky individuals with a bad standard ROM & not motivated enough to update ROM or add the tweaks available on this forum.
you get from life what you put in, this device is the same ...
I have had a hermes for like the last 4 years or whatever and my friend has me using his fuze to customize it. I am using the newest energy 2.5 sense rom and while I like the sense and everything the phone is laggy..
Coming from the hermes I thought this phone would be much faster but I dont notice a difference. I know I'm running more stuff but it has way more memory left over than my hermes ever had and it still lags even in txt msging.
The overall volume is worse than the Hermes also which really sucks..I can barely hear a txt msg notification when its in my holder and that wasnt an issue on my hermes.
The keyboard kinda sucks also..It just doesn't feel the same and its hard for me to tell i even pressed a button or not. Also whoever came up with the button layout needs to be punched in the face!!
Another thing the phone dialer..wow that one click to call leo dialer or whatever it is, is very hard to get use to. I think I called about 5 ppl yesturday by accident. I just disabled the HTC Dialer cause I couldnt stand it anymore. I think the touch screen is too sensitive or something cause I have problems touching the screen and scrolling in other apps also.
Overall I like the phone its okay but I am glad I didn't get it when it came out..
I wasn't too thrilled about the phone, mainly cause i dislike touchscreens and to be honest i still do (iPhone, Android and WM). This phone offered me the best it could of both worlds, i have a full qwerty keyboard and some button on the front and the annoying touch screen as well.
The original ROM (AT&T) was pretty useless, once i put one of the custom roms on it, i have grown to like and enjoy it. Everything in it works perfectly, i've even had better GPS results then a standalone GPS device compared one next to each other using same application and map on the same road.
I think it's all about what you want, and what you need.
Raphael is a very special device. On one side you will love it(sharp VGA,D-pad,extras such as magnetic stylus with sensor, keyboard, accelerometer, sensor area below display). On the 2nd side you will hate it due to poor GPS,crappy Wifi, slow reactions and low acceleration of the graphics. However as I said before, this device is about user customization and opportunities,so it is one big compromise. Only thing you need to make clear is,what you want and what you get. For me,I want to do many things(browsing web, outlook mail, bussiness planing, perfect ergonomy, customization, development) and these things I really can do with it. Of course there are minuses such as navigation and GPS at all. One big minus on my HTC Hero is also capacitive touchscreen, that has nothing to do with ergonomy(that's all about image, that Apple was designed few years ago). I really hate this technology. Many things I do with Raphael's touchscreen(sliding finger lightly without reaction-that I really like, handwriting with stylus) are the past with Hero. Unfortunately, but it is true. Another thingie,I am really scared to lose D-pad or any kind of alternative,I can't live without it
Eh... it does what I need it to do. I'm going to jump ship and pick up an actual Android device whenever AT&T decides to bring a decent one.
I have never had a problem with the GPS. It has always been snappy to me with the right roms. Wifi is kind of weak, but I dont use it exclusively so it's not a big deal. Now for those who use Sense 2.5, it it laggy and that's because (as explained by nrg) the original theme was meant for a 1ghz system and we have half of that. even if it's a sense port, it still requires alot more cpu power that the fuze can not physically give.
Just got a TP in a warranty trade. My Xperia was dead and they did not have any left..... While I like the phone it is indeed a bit laggy.
Will go to custom Rom very soon I think.
GPS is no issue for me as I have it in my car allready. Never used a phone for that mainly because there are better dedicated systems available. Wif is also no issue allthough I tried it and it is actuelly rather good.
All in all I kind of like the phone but I am happy I will get a TP2 in a couple of weeks in an upgrade.
I have big problems to get GPS fix(i got it finally after 2 hours of attempting!). It seems, that the device has builtin "GPS Importance" sensor, because it never works when I need it and works good when I test it only. Wifi is indeed better as in Diamond2,where I see 50% of signal,D2 sees only 25%,while my performance was set to max.battery save. One thing I don't understand is,that HTC Hero has the same chipset, while the performance is much much better(maybe system dependent and drivers) and Hero GPS is almost perfect. It gets fix even before I burn a cigarete outdoors. Also it doesn't heat up while using wifi or gps as Raphael does.
try updating your ROM to a newer one. I am personally using the early march model and i think it's great. My GPS doesn't have any issues picking up signals. Usually at best 1 minute.
It doesn't help. I tried already many ROMs,still the same result. Nevermind,GPS in my case is useless, especially when you need it. I've used navigation with Toshiba and now I use Hero.
that sucks. Sorry to hear that. As you see i'm using the may 19th version. I get locks real fast. Give Energy ROM with sense 2.1 a try. It might work out better for you.
Actually,I am running EnergyROM 6.5 Manila 2.5(2.4.10). I will try different Radio, even tough actual I have is maybe 4th.
ah.. well that's part of your problem.. manila 2.5 is meant for a 1ghz phone. you have a 512mhz phone.. there's a good reason it's so damn slow. just communicating between internal hardware is a ***** when you're overworking your system as is... try manila 2.1

Spot on, using 2.5 manila is not smart if performance & reliability is major needs, you are using Beta software/ROMs ported to work on devices it was not designed for and expect everything to work fine !!
About the best Touch Pro 6.5 ROM from my experience is TAEL build with Sense (manila) 2.1
Runs well in general use for most people.
The Touch Pro is quite a good device when equipped with good ROM tweaks & software.
Use wifi, gps, gprs tethering daily without any issues, handles mail, sms & calls as it should, aftermarket headset has turned it into a great MP3 player, sound quality is very good.
Will be keeping mine for quite a while as happy with it & like the size of the device plus not a fan of d-pad-less & minimal button design concept devices.
