:/
but what you are not looking at is the BUGGY RAM (ram leaks)
the ram depletes like crazy even though no processes are running
this problem does not exist with WM6
eg. in my previous device O2 executive (Universal)
running WM5 initial ram 31 mb
after 3 days 12-15 mb so i have to soft reset
same device running wm6 initial ram 28-29 mb
after 3 days 23-24 mb so no soft reset required
besides the WM5 interface looks ugly as s**t

WM6 in fact... is not a new software comparing to WM5, it's just a very good Service Pack. What does it mean? WM6 is much better and faster than WM5!!! You must be the only person in this community that want to go back!!!
Strange question indeed... it is pointless, and would only generate regressions on your device :?
I am happy to note that the old problem on TyTNs AKU 3.x WM5 with files vanishing from the microSD card is not solved in TyTN IIs WM6. I was playing MP3 files in PocketPlayer, then paused the player and wanted to resume a few hours later, only to discover that the directory was empty... Pulling out the microSD card and putting it back solved the problem and the files came back again.
This took away some of the nostalgia I was feeling for my old PDA.

If you said compare Windows mobile 2003 and say WM5, I might have agreed with you.
But WM6 has *always* run faster and more reliably than WM6 on all windows mobile device I've tried
Wizard user here (looking for upgrade)
I got to disagree out of my personal experience.
I ran WM6 on my slow 200mHz processor and it was remarkably slower than the WM5 i'm now running.
Memory leaks are true though, and I have to reset once a week because the damn thing ran out or ram ... I find this is a small price to pay for the speed i gain.
WM5 vs WM6

Maybe not the only one.
I personally think there are some things about WM6 that are not improvements, e.g. dialpad and inability to replace dialpad with a good big button keyboard. After all, this is still a phone, and good, reliable, easy to use dialpad is important to me.
Unfortunately my friends, this is the end of an era
Most of our legendary developers (JWright, Midget, Leo, Beasty, Helmi) now have different devices, or looking at a new one anyway.
Hopefully our other developers and cookers can continue their work, but it is unlikely that we will see new ROMs and completely new builds of WM6 as we have seen in the past.
I would ask you that you always read the wiki first, and that you don't clog the threads asking developers to release new versions
funny ,,,, it means that i last developer who may do complete new build for uni

+external screen
+-more 3g standarts ( for som countries + but for most part of world useless)
-+128 mb ram by default /// good .. but uni also may have it
-unstandart screen ... pixel doubling tecnology will not work ... it cause troubles in software compability with screen dependable apps
-processor mch slower than in old uni
-screen rotation mechanizm have more details ... his durability will much lower neither universal construction
-fullsize sd unsupported.. you may sat bye bye to 16 gb cards

Un-standard Screen:
There are a couple of other devices with this (so Microsoft must have a solution). But your right, there are a lot of poorly written applications out there.
Processor:
Although the clock speed is slower, it has a better version of the ARM commands (ARM V6 instead of the Uni's ARM V5TE). Also, it has a dedicated graphics processor (instead of the Uni's shared CPU\GPU)
Screen Rotation:
Haven't actually heard anything about the screen rotation (do you have a link?). But yes, if its more complex then its more likely to fail
SD Card:
Unfortunately I do have to agree with you on this. Micro-SD is available upto 12Gb (http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/07/sandisk-crams-12gb-onto-a-microsdhc-card/) it is *a lot* more expensive than standard SD
So, if the Omni is not a good replacement, and the Universal is growing old - (I can't believe I'm about to ask this question, I love my Uni!) what can we switch to??
I really hope Mo3ulla & Ranju will come up something good and stable and hopefully final (bugs free, welll almost...) ...

1. windows mobile work based on v4 commands ....
2. you need program which will support this .. BUT PROGRAM WILL BE UNCOMPATIBLE WITH OLD PROCESSORS..... will software developer write such program ? if they may write in v4 which supports all processors ?
BTW.... uni not ARM V5.... UNI ARM V4
3 dedicated graphics processor - usless due limited front of work .... for what purposes you will use this graphic ?
games ?
hdtv films? (films bigger than 2gb)
external video out ?

You are absolutely right, we are really not benifited from the v5...v6 ARM commands. Eventually I'm sure that the shared xscale graphics is more than enough (unless you're using your uni as a playstation).
Hi guys,
Just to let you know I'm still around with the Uni.
I have bought a Kaiser for the wife, and will be spending a bit of time over in the Kaiser forum, but have not given up on Rom Dev for the Uni, and have not found anything yet that makes me want to retire my Uni.
It will however be quite a while before I get round to a new Rom release.
Don't forget we still have Mamaich around too, as long as we have the "god" the Uni will continue to improve and expand on it's capabilities, features and functionality.
Cheers,
Beasty
Ditto Beasty - I'm not jumping ship anytime soon.
The only weakness I can see with the Uni is the 64mb ram, and that can always be fixed.

Your words were a beam of light through the clouds. In fact, uni is the best PDA till now any one could obtain it. I have had uni since its firts release at the end of 2005, but due to an accident i converted to many other PDAs, wizard, profit and Tytn. In a lucky day i found a person who repaired my Uni, I was too happy to return back to Uni enjoying all what i have lost with other PDAs, the big and high resolution screen, the full keyboard with dedicated 0-9 numbers keys, a tab and big buttons. with the angeled screen i can use the keyboard to dial numbers easly (in wm6 of course) i seldom use the touch screen now to dial, beleive me i have the sensation the I got freed again after a long time of constriction with other PDAs.
But unfortnately there is some cons with uni without them i"ll never think to convert away from uni for more couples of years:
- The problems in radio:
1- the hanging that may occur when dialling, where the screen is stuck on dialing but not actually dialing and u cannot end call. You can go away from phone and use PDA but u must soft reset to use phone again.
2- this occured only once with me, where many persons called me but the phone didn'r ring nor notify the call by any means, every thing is ok with the PDA, i can use it normally but the GSM module is not working at all.
3- The uni may hang with incoming calls, it will hang with the incoming call screen popup without notifyin me, and i discover it when come to use Uni.
- The deficient vedio call in wm6 (it is not so important, i don't use it for routine calls)
- The incompetability of VGA screen with many new enhancements from HTC for devices starting from touch series (HTC album, touchflo technology, HTC home,.....). But this is not so important also, as there is other sotware that colud compensate such as Spb pocket plus 4+.
I don't know much about Omni, but from ur opinions about it, i think it is not a huge jump from Uni, and there is no need to convert to it from lovely Uni.
Regards

Well said Beasty! Thanks for uplifting 'downed' spirits!
Not only Mamaich, we also have The Darkforces Team just in case people had forgotten that most of the new ROM builds floating around came from them, remember the leaked ROM a few months back?
I think our Uni has some juice left even for WM6.1 & the latest enhancements available for her younger VGA sister Athena! The 128Mb RAM hack by Mamaich will prove it's worth in the long run.
As always, a new Uni era will arrive to replace the last one!
I still have a uni, soon to have 128mb of RAM and curently running WM 6.1.1
however my main device is now a nike so my roms/posts wil be less frequent

Guess I was being a bit gloomy because I haven't updated my ROM in a few months, and I heard a few of the developers were getting new devices.
So, I'm downloading ranju's new ROM, and I'll see how that goes...

If a lot of HTC's software doesn't work well with VGA devices, why would HTC release a WVGA device?? Guess that kinda makes the Omni look *very* doubtful...

Forgive me if I unintentionally overlooked you Sir as one of the ROM builders!
There it goes fellow Uni owners, our own mod itself has WM6.1.1 ROM confirmed running in Uni. I'm curious when it's going to be made "public"
My girlfriend's the one using my Uni now, and believe it or not, she's using a WM5 ROM... you know why? Because we need video call.
Ever since last year, I've been very active here in the Universal thread, always hoping for a WM6 for Uni that fully supports video call... alas.. that day never came. Although there have been other improvements for the Uni.. but none of them really concerns me. I've already had a TyTN and now a Nike.. looks like my girlfriends Uni is going to get replaced with a Nike too (since this device is just too damn sexy ). The only thing I missed would be the VGA screen (although the great features of Opera Mini, full TouchFlo support, and almost complete apps compatibility for QVGA made me miss the VGA a lot less since VGA always gives me problems with app compatibility).
We have to face it. The Universal is still being used and modded until today (much like the PlayStation2), but it's era has already ended.

Hey Davince,
Long time since we've seen you around my friend......
I have to disagree with you my friend, as far as Business productivity tool, nothing on the market has come close to the Universal......... it is the only device with a decent sized screen for writing emails and working with documents and no other device has a keyboard as comprehensive or useable as the Uni's.
The Universal era has not ended, with the introduction of Mamaich's great patch to support 128 mb memory and SDHC cards, you will find it impossible to find another PDA on the market that matches for speed, functionality and storage capacity. The Kaiser and other devices that use mini SD's can only support 16GB cards........the Uni beats that too.
The Uni has been reborn, and is far from dead my friend!!
Cheers,
Beasty
I have the IPAQ 4350 [Not the Phone version]. It is just the regular PocketPC with 2003 OS I believe. I would like to know if this can be upgraded or purchase a newer ROM that handles the limited 64MB RAM memory better. Is version WM 6 or 6.1 even possible. maybe not? If so how do I do this. This is a great forum.
You can find lots of ROMs here yes, but most of them are for the phones, since they are used mostly by people who want to tweak 'em. I'm also still looking for a nice ROM for my Ipaq 4350, but in the meantime I'll just enjoy my Touch Diamond's new ROM If you find a nice ROM please pm me
hi guys,
i'm a bit confused, what is currently the best 6.1 rom for the tornado?
thanks!
Good question !
Just check each version and pick the one with the features you need.
Yeah! good question and best answer is check all the roms available here one by one all yourself.
My experience is 6.1 pro by Kamikadze is the best with all taste of PPC but you need some tweaking/mapping hard keys to functions of your prefer.
OK don't trust anybody .. you are the best judge.

For me it WM6.1 Plane Jane Final as long as you install it properly
IMHO at this time WM6.1 Clean 5.2.19202 (Build 19202.1.0.0) Eval is best 6.1 rom.
Why?
-plain and clean, no custom graphics, themes etc.
-no custom apps - everybody have own favourite apps...
-FAST !!
Of course if You don't mind lack of xt9 (beside EN or RU) and a bit troubling controls the best is WM6.1 PRO RC5!!!made by Kamikadze
-PRO!!!
-Tornados fastest rom
Yep, the best ROM should be at least Clean and Fast....
Maybe this is not the place to post this question, but somehow related: which version is the most widely installed in the devices?

There really is no way of telling that 'cos you don't know what people have installed. And to be honest, as others have said in this thread, it's all down to personal taste. You have to try them all and see which one suits your needs / or appeals to you. My personal opinion is that WM6 is more stable on the Tornado than WM6.1, although I do like the additional features you get with 6.1... it doesn't cost you anything to try the ROM's, apart from a little time.
One giveaway to the most used, is the ROM's with the most posts
Yeah, you're right. And regardign the WM6.1 Standard Vs. the WM6.1 PRO... how is the balance? The PRO is a bit of a gamble in a Tornado, ins't it? I'd say most people will go the safe way and choose Standard?

I got my SDA about 10 days ago and wanted to upgrade from WM5 to WM6.
Installed:
1. WM6 English ROM Platinum Edition (Service Pack 1) OS 5.2.1711.18165.0.5.0
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=365023
It's NOT WM6.1 , too many programs I don't need. Seems to have to many buggy menus. Didn't like it.
2. [Release 11Jun08] WM6.1 (not so) Plain Jane - 5.2.19202 (Build 19202.1.0.0) FINAL
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=406716
This one is 6.1, quite nice, has cool progs. It felt slow and unresponsive and I didn't like home menu and didn't want to bother editing it
3. [Mar 27, 2008] WM6.1 Clean 5.2.19202 (Build 19202.1.0.0) Eval
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=375670
The one I use now. Neat and fast. No bugs!
All is on the title...
No more ROM in the future
I agree with you, but.....
There doesn't seem to be anything to replace it. I've tried Kaiser, Magic and Diamond hardware, all of which suck in comparison.
So I've ended up back on the uni - the other phones are all heading to ebay.
Any suggestions as to how we liven up the uni a bit?

Yep, the Uni is unbeatable about the life, any vanilla ROM with one of the latest builds will be nice WM6.1/6.5
My way of keeping my Uni fun was SPB Mobile Shell 3.5, it is just like getting a new user interface, so doesn't matter so much what ROM it is running, even WM5. The only thing I needed was 128Mb RAM. However, I have to say that having 128/256 on my LG KS20 felt amazingly roomy, wish my Uni had that much space.

There are still a few Chefs alive in Uni section!
So Uni will never die, even if there is no mre new ROM´s we reached WM6.5 on a device with WM5, so we are actual.
And I´m sure someone will find the way to port the new look of WP7 in the future!
I have tested several HTC devices and have to agree, none of them can be compared, even if they are faster...not even my Rhodium (which is a great device)
UNIVERSAL will never die!!
OK, so a bit of a rom refresh would cheer people up. I'll package up a 21068/21051 rom in the next few days. This build has been running on my Uni for a few months now so I know it's stable, there's just some loose ends to tidy up. It'll also finally ditch tcpmp 0.81 in favour of the latest 0.72recomp3 which now matches 0.81 for playback speed and doesn't have the annoying screen rotation bug.
If you still love your uni, and you've not had it upgraded to 128mb yet - go and find a way to get it upgraded! It gives the phone a new lease of life - snappier, more versatile and it seems to improve battery usage. (I suspect the battery improvement is due to reduced CPU-load and Flash-reads when pagepooling is disabled)
Note that you can run a 64mb device without pagepooling, but RAM tends to fill up quite quickly, resulting in apps refusing to load or acting all crashy. That said, there are ways to improve memory management (auto-hibernate for one) that might make it more of an option.
@Enigma - 256MB would rock - particularly for those who like to dabble with linux/android. It's just a shame nobody makes 128mb chips in the right packaging. :-(
Great to know something new will come!!, hope for 64Mb too
Shame for me upgrade to 128mb it´s very hard to accomplish
Great news!
thingonaspring ,
greart news to hear!
I have been using Cotull Q3 WM 6.1 for ages.......nothing beats it. (IMHO)
And with 128 MB RAM it's "snappy".
A new ROM is always welcome.Waiting with appreciation.

I´m completly agree about this, I think we should ask OP first
@teddybear3k, do you think you can consider this request please?
Also today Sun Dream released a new ROM, so Uni will be still alive!!!

Here I can tell my IMATEJASJAR not dead, he is the top, the only disadvantage is the ram, but I already have a donor hand and will follow the operation and 128mb ram will be happy if you still make good ROMs for our UNI, maybe one day I learn to cook roms for my faithful friend
