Simple little GPS Software - General Topics

Going on hols tomorrow and would like to know if there's a simple little program I can use that I can use on the plane to see where I am while on the plane!
Anyone know of any software that can do this? Don't want anything street level, just a good overview of where the plane is would do perfect!
Cheers.

VisualGPSce will give you altitude, heading and speed.
Personally I'd find this interesting.

This app looks interesting. Does it support VGA screens and Landscape?

Actually I'd like to know that myself.

igo8, zoom out to the world and it will show you

I once used my kaiser (with stock 6.0) on a plane and using GPS Speed Sentry, after the speed of of the plane exceeded ~620Km, the phone lost its fix and couldn't get one until the plane landed.

Just a thought.
On my phone the gps attachment only works if radio (i.e. phone bit) is also on. That would mean I would be breaking the airline rules and maybe endangering the flight!

I had my tomtom working on a recent flight back from Malaysia. It was funny to see it trying to lock onto the london roads at 400-500mph as we were flying over towards Heathrow!!

here is a good app that can be v. useful, not sure if the gps will get a fix at those speeds.

Is there any software to do this?(GPS current speed reading)

Hi all
Ive got an xda 2 and a bt gps thingi, is there any software that shows your current speed? maybe even 0/60 times and 1/4 of a mile .. i know this wont be that accurate but it would be a cool toy.
If anybody could post some names that would be great, not really after a full on route finder with it just a stand alone but i guess anything will do, free or otherwise
Thanks

GPS on Raphael

Tested it out today, counted from when I opened OCN8 and it took exactly 30 seconds to get a fix. Perfectly acceptable if you ask me, especially seeing as I'll only use it for long drives.
great to know man
Thx for sharing
Did you try any button mapping software?
With or with out A-GPS??

With A-GPS, I don't think you can turn it off.
Only one GPS setting: Enable AGPS: Checkbox.
No, I haven't done any button mapping to the other person who asked.
Is the device as fast as shown in unwired videos?

Yep, 26 seconds for me using Garmin.
And yes, mine is as fast as the videos. Definitely an improvement over the Diamond, despite the Diamond's speed improvements with recent cooked ROM's.
Amazing what a bit of extra RAM will do...
Great, thanks for the info
Since you're using Garmin
I've always found it's notifications to be quite lower than other GPS s/w even when placing an attention tone prior
Is it any louder on the Raph speakers in comparison with Kaiser?

You know what, I've not managed to get a GPS fix using Copilot 7 or Google Maps.
Strange. Very quick for me too.

Make sure to download QuickGPS before you use those programs, that may be your issue.

Fast like, TF3D being fast? Check this video out, AT&T model, 100% out of the box and not 1 tweak applied:

Now with tweaks, it's unreal.
Nope, still not working.
Have you tried GpsTest?

Oh, no...what's that? Is it something built in or is it an app I have to install?
EDIT:
Copilot has a GPS Status thing built in. Looks like I can only see one satellite. Kind of weird.

Are you outside or inside some building?
GPS works fine for me in both Google Maps and TomTom Navigator. Indoors is not so great, but whilst in a car it was fine all the way home on a 30 minute journey!

I'm in my house, my Kaiser right next to it is working fine.
GPS isn't supposed to work indoors... If you need it indoors, you may also need to be living in a psychiatric ward. :\
I got full signal in front of my house according to OCN8's little GPS status bar, for those who care.
As mentioned earlier, QuickGPS will help (hopefully as it has been useless for me since Kaiser WM6.1 ROMs started to be cooked)
BUT
You need to give it time first to aquire GPS fix alone THEN go back to your PC to download the QuickGPS data
To make sure you have everything afterwards successful,
reboot your PDA and see if you can aquire a faster fix.
You can test with GPSTest attached here.
If it didn't solve your problem, check with other fellow Raph holder their Radio versions and yours.
If you are to flash, do not forget to HardSPL your device.
Good luck and give us more feedback

@fireblade63
I'd say the notification volume in Garmin is about the same as it is in the Kaiser, so I agree - it's certainly not the loudest, but I'm someone who likes the Sat-Nav turned down a bit anyway. I hate having the things shouting at me, especially if there are other people in the car who I'm trying to talk to.
My father-in-law, on the other hand, could never cope with the Garmin / Raphael combination because he turns his TomTom XL up to full volume, which drives me mental on the odd occasion I have to experience it!
So, no, the Raphael is no louder as far as I can tell.

Google maps 5.0 is out and it's amazing !

They really did a great job on this.
And why is it so amazing, sir?
3D and compass tracking.
I am nnot seeing the 3d maps at all. Updated, looked in big cities even
No dice..
...in 1943, I killed a drifter.
Here;
With the latest version of Google Maps, you get that very cool 3D tilt feature, plus vector graphics for less tiling (there's still some lag, but it's definitely better), compass mode, improved caching and offline navigation rerouting so that you can still find your way even if you lose your connection.

Closest 3D support for me is Chicago. Works though. KC was showing too. Had to turn my phone off and charge it couldnt look any where else.
edit:
When you have the app open go to help and look under Cities with 3D buildings.

thanks for the heads up
Its definitely nice, 3d will only show on the strip here in vegas, but works fine. Definitely a step up in the right direction.

Oh, ok. I havent reset phone. Ill try that.

Ahh, sorry, didn't mean I had to turn my phone off / on to see 3D ... meant it's not supported everywhere / not every "major" city or whatever. Only looked at Chi and KC, before I had to turn my phone off to charge, is what I meant. You can see a list of 3D cities evidently from the help section.
Love the new Google Maps ... this **** is baller.
I cant see 3d maps, i used the 2 finger slide down, it tilts, but cant see the buildings

You have to zoom in more and the buildings will show up.
Dallas, TX has 3D buildings for downtown. They look pretty reasonable to me.
For those that are having issues seeing the 3D. Make sure you turn off Satellite mode.
Nice new improvements!
For people who can't see 3d buildings. Just type in empire state bulding and click search the zoom in.
btw, there's a zoom range in which you can see the buildings in 3d.. you have to get close enough.

[Q] GPS Camera and Google Maps

I have seen a demo, of turning your camera on and having an overlay of GPS showing you directions, it does not use the map it uses your camera and arrows show you how to get to a location. It also does this while driving. You see the road thru your camera and it shows where to turn and also arrows. Has anyone else seen this ??? Or even know where to get this app. I would sure love to have it. I seen the video only once and can't find it again. I have searched and searched for this app. Could anyone help in pointing me in the right direction...????

Route 66 Brings Augmented Reality to Android GPS Navigation
apparently it is for android my bad, and seems like a cool concept but im guessing this would equal major battery drain. but if you have a car dock then what the heck right?
dont forget the thanks button

Thanks now to get the app. My job I travel so much and thought this is the ticket for a great GPS system. Yes I am sure the battery drain is rapid

Why did GPS accuracy take a nose dive after Maps-v6?

It's like they changed all the low level code that deals with the actual signal.
There doesn't appear to be any filtering or averaging going on anymore, which is causing my readout to bounce around by 15meters or so all the time. It didn't used to do this on older maps versions.
When I'm sitting at stoplights it says...turn left...continue straight...turn right...turn right...in 500 feet, turn make a U-turn...
It does this as my location constantly changes.
Does anyone else experience this? What to do about it?
Revert to an older version.
Nope, I surely don't have the same issues as you.

thanks guys. have high accuracy mode on. Running custom ROM (Paranoid) and Kernel. Is anyone else doing same as me?
Maybe i have the same problem when change direction, forma example turn right or turn left is slow. Anyway i will upload a video ti understand.
With androits can you share your GPS lock?
This is mine outdoor.... For me is very poor my signal but i dont know if There are a device that can get more SNR and more satellities.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
Mine is been the same before the the new maps. It's never been great, but good enough. What annoys me the most is that EVERYtime I open navigation I get a message saying that i can improve accuracy if I enable wifi and then have to choose ignore or settings... Used to only do this once.

see my videos
navigation is exact like me?
is normal? or i can get rma?
