Windows Mobile 7 - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro ROM Development

Hi
Do you think Windows mobile 7 will be available for Universal?

Considering the fact Windows Mobile 6 wasn't - I'd say No.

No
Non of the current windows mobile phones will have upgrade to windows mobile 7, it must have a diffrent hardware ( which is not in any current phone).
For Example : the multi touch screen

Although WM7 itself won't be, there will likely be some things that can be extracted and ported to the Uni. For example, FlashLite 3, if it isn't generally released for WM devices.
-PJC

The porting of WM7 to Universal down the line is VERY POSSIBLE (Thumbs Up)....however again depending on the timeframe and is basic requirements we should have better knowledge. How it will fare against new WM 7 devices am not sure, but I believe it will be pretty good. Even today, Universal is still in the top 5 devices of all time and still the best in terms many areas including Speakers, Screen, and keyboard (still the easiest to use, and easier than Touch Pro ...yeah really)...
Officially WM 7 will never be a part of Universal..Universal's production is at it's end..(was over for most retailers ages ago)..of course unsold boxes are still around.

HTC PHONE
i think i seen that phone on Easydevices website, called the Advantage, although i think it runs Mobile 5 rather than Vista,
all i know is, ive got mine preordered
http://www.easydevices.co.uk/pp/PDA/HTC/HTC_Advantage_X7500.html
What I dont get is why they are releasing the Advantage with Windows Mobile 5 instead of 6. Easydevices also have the HTC S710 which has Mobile 6.
They should be using Mobile 6.
HTC P9500 (Shangri-La)
I'm not sure who to blame, you guys who didn't notice the title, or insider666 who seems to be .. weird on this introduction with almost nothing to say about it. Anyway if you look at those photos, the unit runs on Windows Vista. Yes, Vista the full PC-class OS, not the strip down mobile Windows Mobile. Also note the Windows key on the keyboard.
Anyway, I'm not sure where did this news come from, but I'm not having luck on google on this. However, both the pics above may have been photoshopped, you never know, until we get a more reliable source
it does look like the HTC advantage, and it does look like its been photoshopped, cause the windows key looks awful bright.
but hey, if it runs vista i'll be impressed but i think it'l be mobile 5 if not 6
here is the rough spec for P9500:
It is a Vista Plus WM 6
7" Screen
40GB HD
VGA for VT
WIFI
HSDAPA,UMTS
GPS
Fingerprint Recognition
Semi-auto Sliding.

What would the point in that be?
www.seehtc.com
Thats the official Advantage page.
I just hope that the T-Mobile version (T-Mobile Ameo) will be upgradable to WM6, otherwise it will be made obsolete within 3 months of hitting the market.
Oh and the second pic just looks like an early mock up of the I-mate Ultimate 7150.
This is not an HTC advantage, please bear in mind.
It will be out in Q4 2007.
Here is another one, HTC P6550 Sedna (Not P6500 Sirius)
3.5" Screen
3.0 Mega pixel autofocus camera,
fingerprint recognition
credit/smart card reder
support GPS and A-GPS.

That doesnt explain why it will use both Vista and WM6, please explain what the point in using Dual OS's would be along with how these will be partitioned.
i doubt very much it will use both
vista is not likely to be compiled for more platforms then x86-32 and 64
and wm6 is arm based
if it's running vista is will have a pc cpu
and if it have that kinda power it would be easier to emulate wm6 then to put in a arm cpu in the device too
My guess: virtualization of WM to operate HSPDA and GSM phone and data services; that way they don't have to write a phone program for Vista (or maybe MS wants it that way).
This is a space HTC can't ignore considering the popularity of the Sony UX models and the growing buzz around the OQO 02 and its WWAN EV-DO.
I expect the reason for 2 OSes on the one device will be
WM6 for low power requirements & day long operation of Push mail as in the manner that current devices can manage.
Vista for the times that a standard PC app is required at the expense of only being able to run for 3 - 5 hours.
The base Windows CE is available for x86 machines but I expect a dual processor setup to support the low power requirements of WM6 compared to Vista.
IMHO, this super dude is a smart-ass. He seems to be photoshopping the images leaked/released by HTC in this PDF doc.
Folks, take a look at this
Does this mean that HTC is slowly venturing in laptop market?

WM 7?

Anyone know any specifics about release dates etc? Wouldn't mind changing 6.5 for something a little newer. If I hadn't absolutely hated Nokia and Mac I would've started looking for something else by now
Cheers!

October to November is currently the best guess.
Recent rumours are suggesting that there may be two different versions of WM7, a stripped down "Business" version and a richer "Media" one, with Business being out Q4 this year, and Media not till next year.
if they split it up like that then I wonder why they'd need 6.5 anymore....
I recall first plans were WM 6.5 for media hype and WM 7 for business. Even if I thought this didn't make a lot sense to not have the new OS for media bimm bamm.
Rumours are also that it's no longer based on Windows CE, but on the Zune HD kernel instead; that it WON'T be backwards compatible with earlier versions, and won't run on 99.9% of existing WM devices.

IF the rumours are true, it'll be a blow for existing software BUT, a good step for Microsof to take. I mean, have you seen the Zune HD's UI? WM7 is meant to be using that, and if so, iPhone is in trouble.
well if it runs .net then at least some apps would work
There is even newer rumor or supposedly unofficial response from microsoft, about this CE rumor. Ant it states, that Wm 7 bill be using CE7. And CE7 was already offcialy announced as to it will be using ARMv6 arhitecture.
And there is a Microsoft Commercial, where you can see some WM7-style thing beeing run on HTC touch Pro, and Xperia X1. So ported it will be, but how fast will it work on such devices, having only MSM7200.

It's false.
I don't know if it definitely CE7, though it probably is. I am hearing that it can run 6.x apps so long as they are the same resolution. Trying to get more info.

6.5 is for cheaper, lower-specification hardware. Remember that the HD2 represents the least powerful, lowest resolution device capable of running WM7. Any new WM phone with a hardware spec in any way inferior to the HD2 will run WM6.5 instead of 7.
read this:

there's only 1 choice left for us: 100% stable android rom.

I'm not 100% sure about that. The problem is that Windows Mobile 7 will run on either Windows CE 6 or 7, as opposed to the Windows CE 5 comprising Windows Mobile 5.x and 6.x. Someone will likely have to create nearly every low level component from scratch, so the OS will support the older unsupported hardware. It might be doable, but it won't be as simple as running 6.5 on a WM 6 device. There's a thread here which goes into more detail concerning Windows Mobile 7 on a current generation device (Touch Pro2), and it doesn't look good.

Until MS officially announce something, everything we hear about WM7 is going to be rumour; and one rumour can't refute another because they're both just that, rumours.
We'll have to see if they drop any more info in Feb.

Well it was also possible to run 6.5 on PPC 2003 devices. Probably not really stable but it was possible. but anyway I don't really care. 6.5.x will stay on my Topaz and I'll pick up a new phone for WM 7 of course

Yes, but every version of Windows Mobile from 5.0 onwards has been based on the same Windows CE kernel; that's one reason why other OSes (like Android) run so much faster than WinMo on the same hardware, and permit 720p video recording, etc. - a lot of the underlying code in WinMo hasn't been upgraded in six years.
To put it in desktop PC terms, going from Windows Mobile 5.0 all the way up to WinMo 6.5 is the equivalent of going from Windows 95 to Windows ME - it's still basically the same OS, just with a few tweaks to the UI. By contrast, going to WM7 will be like going from Windows ME to Windows Vista - a completely different operating system kernel, with a completely different driver model.
The drivers will be the biggest problem. Unless there is some device out there that officially runs WM7 and which uses exactly the same component as one on your target platform, there simply won't be anywhere you can get a driver file from; and even if such a thing exists, piecing together complete support for every component of a device by picking and choosing driver files from many different platforms would be an enormous effort.
There is a reasonable chance that we will see WM7 running on the HD2, even if there isn't an official release; that's because HTC is apparently using the HD2 as a WM7 development platform, so if someone leaks the ROM they use for testing, the cooks here could probably cobble together something reasonable using it as a basis. But for any other device, realistically there is no chance at all.
Look Here
Its CE 7.0

odd would be the first time ever ms made a wm release based on a ce core not available already and tested for stability

What OS do you prefer: Android 2 or Win Phone 7?

What OS do you prefer: Android 2 or Win Phone 7
how will we know? no-one got ttheir hands on either yet?
its a completely subjective and pointless questin (IMHO)
google is the wolf in sheeps clothing. they call MS the bad guy while they own the world's info.
I'll take a windows HTC phone since this community will support it way better
Considering no one has WM7 how do you expect to get a decent tally from the poll at this point?
With that being said - IF the older windows mobile software will run on WM7, then I will stick with windows mobile simply because there are more apps avail.
WP7S looks much sexier than Android.
imagine if possible, what you chose?
The Android 2.x has multitasking (rather than The Android 1.x which has no multitasking)
In contrast, the Windows Phone 7 has no multitasking (while the older Windows Mobile/Phone has multitasking, including the oldest Pocket PC)..
And I REALLY NEED MULTITASKING, so I choose the Android
web 2.0 crap
i hate social networks...
stay on windows phone classic
hmm update:
android gets me
still hatin social networks....
currently the chances to be able to move any current htc device to wm7 are much much smaller then moving them to android 2
wm7 is not a follow up for wm6.X it's a different branch's which don't run wm6.x programs and require hardware other wm6.X devices don't have
so chances are if you really really like wm7 you need to get a new device
and hope that many developers head in that direction rather then android, iphone or nokia n900
because old pocketpc apps don't work

Windows Embedded CE 6.0 features a completely redesigned kernel, which supports over 32,768 processes, up from 32 process support of the previous versions. Each process receives 2GB of virtual address space, up from 32MB.
well, seems like the only choice we've left is android.
& wm 6.xx is terrible.
Judging from what i saw at MWC 2010 i'll personally stick
to winmo "classic", that's what they are calling WM6.X now.
WM 7 looked very lame and boring to me. Look like it's
bound to be a major setback for MS and a significant
growth in the Android arena. A change to radical.

1.6 DOES multitasking.
Anyway, Android is better than WM in many aspects..
From Touch Pro to HTC Hero. Too bad it has the same qualcomm crappy procesor, but it's faster than WM and way more handy (notification bar simply rocks).
And about WM7.. I don't like it. A total downgrade.. IMO. RIP WM
So yes, i vote for Android 2
RIP Windows Mobile... I originally got you because you were so hackable and customizable, but this new version just sounds like an iPhone clone two years too late....
Android is definitely going to be where it's at for the phone hacker community (it seems...)
i will not be surprised if someone in XDA-DEV managed to cook a rom for touch pro that will support windows mobile 7..even now, with their help,we are able to boot our touch pro with android OS..just wait and see..

Windows Mobile 7?

Hi out there
I have used Justhome WM6,5 for some time, but im very jalous of Windows Mobile 7
Is there someone in this forum who is trying to make a windows mobile 7 rom?
Please!
/NielsenArt
jaja... funny... not men...
there are only demos and have nothing else to microsoft
Unfortunately, this will never happen.
The core OS in WM5, WM6 and WM6.x is almost identical, but not so in WM7. It will not be possible to port WM7 as you would need drivers and a kernel compatible with it. To make matters worse, the hardware requirements for WM7 are way above and beyond the hardware that the Herald/Wing has. Like the difference between Win98 and WinVista when it comes to system requirements.
WM7 is a big name. It has lots of concepts and ideas. Some versions of wm7 will work on the wing/herald. They will never be release though, lol. However, Windows Phone 7 will not work Which is what you were probably referring to.

should not be forced because WM7 is not compatible for your device (HTC Tornado) and will only make it hard brick device
Short answer is simply: NO - Never. Look up the article in Wikipedia about Windows Mobile: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Phone_7 - especially the HW requirements at the bottom.
HW Requirements are so much above the level that the Tornado can offer, and this is for ALL areas (except the number of buttons) that only devices that can get close to that (e.g. the HD2) have a chance to see WM7.
The same is true for Android in most areas btw. Despite there are some efforts to port that OS to old WM phones, I have not seen (and do not expect as well) any serious results.
The Tornado is such a nice all-day phone with a form factor that neither WM7 nor Android devices offer (except the X10-mini) that it will stay with me quite some time until selection of small phones increases.
