My advice is to start where most of us started the 3rd sticky down, faq's, wiki, and just trial and error. There is a lot of info but it will all come in handy. Just by doing the stuff yourself and getting your hands dirty, you will have a better grasp on everything. And there is not a lot of personal hand holding here because of all the information. But welcome, and once you start this you won't stop, it really fun!

It's all in here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=369282
Just read, read everthing
You need HardSPL before you can flash anything. And your ROM and Radio must be compatable when you flash. What that means is explained in there.

thanks for the feedback

Consider this a friendly warning. First Post is a New Thread, not a good start. You are violating the "laws of the land." Search for your answer. Read the Wikis and Stickies! Post your question in relevant thread.
I have over 1000 posts and I've created 0 threads. Because I post my questions in relevant threads.
Anyway, Welcome to XDA-Developers.
Have a look at the Information in my Signature.

I agree
I did it all myself... I just got my tilt last wednesday... takes some reading but it sure beats getting flamed.

Welcome to XDA...
Welcome to XDA!
Whenever joining a new forum, like visiting a good friends house, learn the customs & house rules straight away.
Take time to read the forum stickie threads at the top of each forum section. Your biggest helper will be the Stickies & the wiki. It's also a good idea to take a look at some of the older threads, specifically Blue Angel & Hermes when it comes to tools as you will learn much of the theory & knowledge that has gone into the tools most take for granted today.
Also, PLEASE post in the appropriate place! The development thread is for Developmental knowledge & issues only.

Please read through the forum before you post. Your question has probably already been answered.
We now have to wade through countless threads regarding SMS phonebook lookup, where can i get radio 4.16, etc.
I appreciate those who already take a little care.

This is the key here. If there was an easier way to do this.
My suggestion is start up a FAQ page|post.
With common and upto date news.
Especially the following I believe:
- Latest updates, and where to find or get them (eg ROM)
- SMS problem + patch.
- Un-locking technique (or is this against the rules?)
- hardware problems screen, serial, etc..
You can't stop people posting silly questions, without having the answers easily available.
I spend a lot of time on the madonion site for 3dmark. Yes overclockers and computer destroyers! Newcomers, beginners need to be led. You cannot tell them NO. Never tell somebody no, tell them other things...

Hi
Just my 2 pennies worth of comment:
I normally would try a Search for some keywords to get all the posts recently on the topic I am interested in. The search engine is very efficient and it shows you all the posts with that keyword. It can be a little tedious some times to read thru the threads for a topic which has been heavily debated. But the search mechanism is a good point to start for someone interested to get an answer quick as one doesn't have to wait for somebody to answer you especially when the info is already available elsewhere. An FAQ would be a fabulous addition though it would be lots of extra work for the site developer.
This forum is the best support for the xda available in the whole world and we should thank all those who made it possible. As the person with probably the most silly questions it is a great site to get help and I would like to give those guys sweating behind the screen a big thank you !!!
Cheers
Vic
Will do
Sounds fair enough. Thanks for the awesome site!
Was it really necessary to revive a thread that is almost eight years old? Most forums have FAQs and other stickies to help new users find what they need.

Wasn´t really necessary that you also replied on an old thread?

Man ATW,
I thought you broke down & fed him. I like the thread you hit him with though.
muttim86, I don't know if you've noticed, but there is a debate going on about how to deal with the issue of people disregarding the stickies & the wiki & posting questions that are easily found or have been re-posted so many times that everyone is utterly sick of answering them.
Now, depending on how much "Cooking" you want to do, this can be a monumental task for a new guy. Most great chefs have lite roms that you can make your own through customization.
If you feel you're ready to spend lots of time reading though, start here: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser
There are threads & tools available in the wiki links. Some of the tools are easy to use & self-explanatory, others take a great deal of knowledge.
If you are not familiar with Hex editing & command prompt, or some of the tools you'll find in the wiki, you'll need to do tons & tons of reading or stick with adding onto a base rom.
For a begginer I suggest finding a good solid base rom & building from there. In the very first post of the board you will find all the information you need & there are also references & links to it in the wiki. There are guides for new rom chefs as well.
Now, that said, your post is redundant & innapropriate. Using the search tools of the forum or by visiting the wiki (where you should always start in any forum) you would have avoided cluttering the board being flamed or spanked. You will get answers to any question you ask IF IF your post convey to people that you have searched & read. Otherwise, well I hope you have an asbestos pair of skivvies.
Useless thread. Wish a mod could lock it and move to a boneyard forum.
If you don't know how to search vBulletin forums, use a Wiki, or research it is doubtful you can be expected to make your own ROM.
Agreed! As a week old newbie, I've spent some time just reading the tons of useful info there is here and could have answered his question. Why do people do this?

What version of Duttys 6.1 is best?

Build 19199 or Build 5.2.19716 updated FEB 20.2008 seems to be the newer one?
i personally prefer 19716 build but you can try both and figure it out. there was no need to open a whole new thread just 4 this question.
It's a perfectly valid question dude.
Like most people I am frustrated by people asking the same questions again and again, but I am concerned that this forum is in danger of heading down a bad road by bashing noobs at every opportunity.

Yes it's a perfectly valid question to ask in Dutty's thread about his ROM not creating a whole new thread about it.
totally agree.
You could argue this is like asking a parent which one of their kids they like the most!
Best thing is to try both and see which you prefer. There will be advocates for both.
ps don't try that with your kids. it will end you up in jail.
I use each rom on my 2 tilts. I feel that 197 is more stable. 191 sometimes freeze if you push some buttons whil they are booting up. doesn't happen to 197.
No disrespect to anyone here on the board, but Dutty's thread is quickly becoming useless to me. I'm not going to weed through 330+ pages of replies to try to follow a conversation or find a piece of information in there. That thread is quickly becoming it's own universe.
I'm glad this thread was started - It's good information for me that I wouldn't have otherwise found.
Regards,
Jeff

Here's the point....I garuntee if you post in there with a question it will be answered...there's no point in making a new thread....that's all I'm saying.

Posted a question ... no answer.
That thread is bull....
It took me 5 minutes to even find my posting.
The thread might make sense if someone was moderating it ... meaning putting questions into the first post with links to answers. But this? Bull!

Yeah, all threads suffer from this, and I'm also totally agreeing with you, I'm also in the same situation, cannot read hundreds of posts and pages of every ROM thread to find out if it's a suitable one to upgrade to. Trying out so many ROMs until satisfied is not an option for me (ok, I'd admit trying a few, but not every version of every flavour of wm6.1), I want to find one to get rid of my german wm6.0 and have iGo still working, and no issues more than with 6.0.
An updated FAQ in the beginning posts of the respective threads would be useful, but even better, real wiki articles (not just links back to forum threads). Don't want to upset people who discovered the Internet just when these forums where already around, but on mailing lists information and discussions where easier to follow and filter...
Just my 0.2€...
Back to the question: which is the best?
Let me tell you: the new 19716 RTM out to come soon will be the best and fastest ever!!!

Att Noob Questions

Ok so I read through some threads and you guys are all a million steps ahead of me..I would like a simple guide on how to put custom roms/modifing the phone..where to get apps for the phone..etc..remember im still learning here lol
by the way im using the Att Tilt on the rogers network..if that means anything lol
just do some reading... there is more literature in these forums than you would probably care to read. Use the search feature to find items related to what you are looking for. Additionally, read the Wiki for Kaiser. It will basically answer most of the questions you'll have.
noob questions
I agree with you. i have read lot of this and i am still lost.
I also would like to know if you can connect a tilt through your pc to the internet using a wireless broad band connection over bluetooth.
thanks a lot i shall take a look at the wiki

All you need is in this Wiki, and specificaly you need to look under "Hacks and Tweaks"
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser
By all means read the Wiki. Read the Sticky post at the top of the posts listing.
But, I would not recommend anyone that is still at the stage of getting to know the phone and learning how to install programmes, to be thinking about flashing a new ROM.
I suggest you spend sometime in the regular Kaiser Forum, getting to know what the Kaiser can do/not do and absorbing information. Flashing can go seriously wrong if you do not have a clear view of what to do and in what sequence. The single sticky post in this forum would be your starting point when you have built confidence.(in particular the link to the ROM Flashing FAQ for Noobies.)
Mike
I agree with Mike....get to know the phone and then start small....ie.programs...new theme...etc......then try some of the bigger stuff.

Agreed with Mike, and (although I'm not on as much anymore) PLEASE READ THE TILT SPECIFIC WIKI!!!
It took a while to compile and was made specifically for new user such as yourself. Cheers.

Can we have a Glossary page at WIKI

Hi Moderators and Senior Memers and all the lovely people of this forum,
I wish if we can have a glossary page at the Wiki for all the new ppl which can have some commonly used terms or Words defined. like OEM, PIE and others..
Though I am quite old to this forum now, but still i find it difficult many times to decipher a particular term used in the forum by Senior people who at times used very technical term.
if we have a glossary, we can avioid new bees posting same old queries again and again..also this way we can aware ppl here about the product they are using.
please respond to this thread, and tell me if i am asking something extra or if we have a glossary page already, Can someone please send me a link.. i will like that to be a bookmarked page.
Many thanks
Loku
I will go ahead and write one up over the next few days and post it. Hopefully it can be sticked and then merged into the Wiki. Perhaps you can post any questions you have to this thread so they can be answered and included.
Thanks for your input.
Thanks much h4waii,
i specifically interested in understanding the USPL and Kitchen terminologies... though i have flashed my VOX with all the Dr. Gonzo's Rom and all versions of NEO by secable. but i really don't understand those pure technical words you ppl use... Its more like Follow the instruction like bible
Thanks again for finding my post a worth
take care
Loku
Wiki has been slightly updated. Please write any and all questions you have about SPL, kitchen, flashing, ROM/RADIO questions you might have. Aboslutely anything, if you thought of them - other people might have and it can be a great help to them. So don't hold back, ask all the 'silly questions' you can think of!
Nice idea...
don't know if it already exists but also including a F.A.Q wuold not be so bad...including the most usual questions like:
Q:"I was trying to flash the XXX rom and i got Image corruption or whatever is..."
A: Have you flashed your SPL.....?
P:S Maybe we would never say RTFM..but we could say RTW( Read The Wiki) LoL...
@h4waii:
Just for the future, when you add a page to the wiki and want to link to it you don't need the full link, just [Glossary|vox_glossary]! Looks better and is easier. OK now start asking questions (never thought I would ever write this)!
Thanks much members..Give me time this coming sunday.. i'll have my list prepare.
Just to share my VOX would have been just abother phone of mine, had i not discovered this forum. It made me love my phone just too much
thanks all
loku
@frauhottelmann:
Ah, thanks and thank you for changing it.
Once a good amount of questions are put and answered, I will contact a moderator to have the title adjusted and stickied.
@lokeshmudgal:
We await your questions to fill you with knowledge! Teehee.
