recommend a free scientific calculator? - General Topics

Hi all,
I just got my first smartphone, Spring mogul (PPC 6800), ans also first time use of windows mobile 6.
Since I am a collage student, I need a scientific calculator, which can do a relatively complicated calculate, at least including commonly used functions.
Any one can recommend a FREE calculator which have good functions? Thanks a lot.

SPACETIME is the best.... But it isn't free....

TI59CE- http://www.zanchetta.net/pocketPC/
Emulates the old reliable Texas TI59 Scientific Calculator of old.

The TI-59 is the one I use as I used to own one some 20+ years ago - great device, have a read of this excellent article written by Menneisyys a while ago, it covers plenty of different options http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=309857 - Mike

Good ol' HP48. It has matrix builder, symbolic equations, 3d plotting and equation libraries. I even have my college programs installed!

Is this also an emulator for windows mobile?

Thanks a lot for replies. Indeed, I don't like emulator of devices such as Texas Instruments ..... I have one of that TI device.
Indeed, some kind of calculator which can provide an interface which is similar to Matlab's command line......That would be great.

I use laridian pocket bible which runs quite well on the HD2, it touch scrolls but you will need to use BsB Tweaks to pinch zoom. You can google it, hope this helps.
laridian is paid. Any free programs ?
If you can find an epub file version of the bible you can use it with htc's reader, which has all those functions.
Sorry ...

I myself am atheist, but I can imagine why someone would want a proper app for their device? How is this funny?
Touch Bible
I like what OliveTree has done with their Version 4 reader for the IPhone - The WinMo App is very similar in features and has access to their vast book store. (Good News) However, I have spoken with them about their plans for WinMo and unfortunately they have no plans to Develop for 6.x; (Bad News)
OliveTree:
Thank you for your interest and desire to help develop BibleReader. Unfortunately, BibleReader for Window Mobile is built on Windows Mobile 2001 technology. We looked into making it finger touch friendly and found that it was going to be easier to rewrite the app rather than updating. Since Microsoft is moving to Windows Phone (7) without backwards compatibility we decided to write the new version for Windows Phone (7). We had been waiting for this announcement before making a large commitment to Windows Mobile.

Olive Tree Bible Software
This leaves the touch bible market for generation 6.x of Touch WinMo WIDE OPEN. My wife and I both love our Touch Pro2s (gotta have the keyboard) and we need a Touch friendly Bible in it. We have no intention on jumping on 7 anytime soon. I am sure there are many more like us out here. with HDs and Diamonds etc....
Right now - I would actually pay someone to create a Touch GUI for OliveTree's current WinMo Reader App. It doesn't have to have all the features of their IPhone Version 4 - In fact we'd be happy with it just the way it is - just give us a better font, the Quick Nav buttons from their Iphone version4 and smooth flip scrolling and we'd be happy.
Their current reader is totally FREE - and they have a HUGE library of Bibles, Study Guides and other related books - so if someone was to create the 'right' reader app. They could probably make quite a few a few bucks as they really have no competition and will get no competition from OliveTree. In fact they would probably love it cuz they'd sell more books.
I am VERY serious about funding the 1st copy for my wife and I - with no desire for rights or ownership - so if there are any takers feel free to contact me. "colin at rhinoweb dot net"
I guess others that want this app could pledge to contribute to the cause here in this post.

It works great. Get it.
keep praying for it, and you shall receive this someday.
lmao. i agree.
I'm giggling too! Sorry... I don't mean to offend...
I use The Olive tree one Since I have it for iPhone and Android.
The purchases work on all three.
I use the tap scroll with no scroll bar, works great.
No, but if I see something I will certainly let you know.
Peace be with you.

[Q] Microsoft Office compatibility

Hey everyone,
I was looking to buying a netbook, but this awesome tablet got me.
The first use will be for me university work: notes, powerpoints, excels.. you know.. that sort of boring student stuff.
So how does the tablet cope with .docx, graphs and powerpoint?
Especially, how good is the compatibility with graphs in excel?
What app do you use? Quickoffice? or the one already installed?
Also I would like to hear some feedback about the keyboard: I'm coming from the awesome one of the VAIO FW. How does it compare to a normal good notebook's keyboard ?
by the way I'm planning to buy the 16GB model + keyboard.
thank you
google docs not ok by you? (Don't mean that in a condescending way, but I think it works pretty well, and it works on android).
EDIT: With what I just said in mind, I have only used google docs for writing papers and doing spread sheets minus graphs. Graphing works but for some reason (maybe just preference, maybe there was a good reason) I kept going to openoffice for the graphs. Haven't tried presentations. However I would assume that google docs is not as powerful MS Office, it is compatible though, but I wouldn't feel right relying on it (google docs) for school stuff beyond the basics.
If you want to write some simple documents or presentations with some pictures and texts, the build-in polaris office is more than capable.. and the keyboard dock works surprisingly well..so you ain't going to miss the VAIO. Also, just tried creating some bar/line/pie chart in polaris office spreadsheet.. no problems at all.. no fancy 3D though..
also you won't find any advanced features like automatic reference in Word, animations/sequence in powerpoint or powerful statistics functions/pivot tables in Excel.
for university work, I won't worry about that too much...Polaris Office is a great office suite and I'm very impressed...
best if you go to your local store and try it out yourself..before you make the decision
Polaris does a better job not blowing up formatting than google docs ime. Of course that only matters if you are continuing on from a previous doc. Shockingly it opened my resume (relatively heavily formatted) just fine.
Presentations are going to be something I can't comment on!
Thank you for the answers.
I found this extremely useful thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13993341#post13993341
which compares the different Office Suites for Android
It might also be useful to know that 'Citrix Receiver' works well on the tablet. My uni allows students to login with citrix and use the programs of the campus. Simply put, I can kind of run any possible program (as long as I'm online that is).
Possible the place where you will go studying has something like citrix?
Powerpoint Animations
Hi to all,
Has anyone found an app that will run PPT presentations just as they would run on a PC? I'd love to be able to run my prezos with all animations...
Thanks much!

+1 for this..
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium App
Don't think that you'll find any software for Android. Android is primary for gaming, not working.
But Excel and Word sheets work quite good with Polaris Office (pre-installed), I haven't tried PPT yet.
It all depends on what you plan on doing. Simple word processing, presentation, or spread sheet would be OK. In Excel for instance if you use macro's you will run into problems. I know that Polaris could read some of my files.
To be honest there are people on here that claim to have replaced their laptop with the Transformer but frankly I don't see how. It is fine for internet, email, & entertainment. It isn't going to replace a laptop that you use for work or school in my view anyway.
Polaris Office work pretty well and is included with the TF (can't beat fee functional software). Just don't expect it to be as functional and easy to use as a real PC.
Honestly if I where using it MS Office apps for school, I'd stick to a laptop. You'll be a lot less frustrated that way. TF would be fine simple office type task or edits in a pinch, but I wouldn't want it to be my main Office device.
Lets not forget tablets aren't true laptop replacements, they don't have that kind of power.

[Q] Best architecture for a standalone Windows 7 tablet

We need to develop a standalone application on a Windows 7 tablet (Motion Computing CL900). Initially Java was the language of choice to develop this application. One criteria is that the tablet is not going to be in Wi-Fi range and will have to be on its own in the field.
if I write it in J2EE/JSP, then I would need a servlet container like tomcat loaded on the device itself. Or I think I could go the Swing route to make it standalone.
But then another person thought, Java is an overkill and just plain HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript (Webkit) will get the job done. The application consists of a form, a signature capture and an image capture using the inbuilt camera.
Since this is my first app on a tablet, I thought I would check around for ideas / pointers. Any feedback would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks.
Since you are doing it for W7, how about using Silverlight?

The management wants me to develop in a language that we already have the skillsets for. So there are people who know Java and then there are people who are familiar with HTML/CSS/JavaScript. We do not have any developers who are familiar with Silverlight
There is no difference between this and a standard desktop app. Pick the language based on the familiarity of your developers and the quality of the tools.
Can you do things like image captures in standard HTML5?

I don't know much about HTML5, but looks like HTML5/CSS3/JavaScript (library) will form a pretty powerful light-weight combo. I am googling to see if I can do an image capture using HTML5 / HTML & JavaScript

Looking to Develope

Hey Guys (and Gals),
I've been in the tech scene for a while, rooting and unlocking android/softmodding psps and xboxs for fun. However recently I wanted to contribute to the scene, and I'm kind of in a dilemma. I want to make a few apps, nothing crazy ambitious just learn how to. Though I'm not sure what platform to do it on. I am kind of torn about doing it on Android or doing it on the Windows marketplace. I want the simplest setup, (i have 2 windows 7 computers, and a htc rezound and toshiba thrive and tf300). I took a college course on C++ but it didn't even touch on guis or go that far in depth. So basically I am starting from scratch either way.
I like android and have a few pieces from them, but I feel as windows is just getting a start it would be a good chance to start also. Furthermore what language is best for each platform? I have heard java for android, but heard a c type program is overtaking, and html and javascript for windows. Any input is greatly appreciated

Woo! Somewhere I can be helpful.
I'd recommend researching a few game engines / frameworks. For example, check out Marmalade SDK (google madewithmarmalade), it's a cross-platform game engine that will abstract your game from the hardware it's running on.
I'd also suggest sticking with c/c++, it's probably the most versatile, and you'll be able to use it with Android, and iOS (and I believe the new Windows 8 mobile platform).
Hope that helps!

http://phonegap.com/ ... pretty much the easiest and most amazing solution for cross-platform development. I use it along with Adobe Dreamweaver. Cheers.
There is also Corona SDK
Sent from my U8120 using Tapatalk 2
Someone else mentioned Corona SDK. I just started using it and am pleased with it. Initially wanted to just prototype with it (it is a bit slower than straight C++) but for simpler apps and games its good.
Damn this site is awsome,so many things to read!
I´ve tried PhoneGap and its quite good. You can do lot's of "programming" without having do kwon Java or Objective-C, you only have to use web tecnhologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
Adobe AIR
Of cource, Unity3d. Best framework for game I ever seen. Deployment for Android and iOS is supported (also in free version).
If you are familiar with Java, Libgdx may be an option (it supports Android, Desktop, HTML5 and iOS is currently under heavy development).

What? Nobody said Titanium/Appcelerator?
I've done a few apps with it and the new Alloy framework is the bee's-knee's.
I'd still rather do native java/objective-c.. but for quick app's i find it better then Phoegap.
There are some alternatives out of there:
- PhoneGap/Cordova (Web based, so performance are not enthusiastic)
- Corona SDK (Commercial, you will have to pay a annual fee. It's game oriented but works very well for 2d games.)
- Moai SDK (Free, pretty much like corona but maybe less advanced in terms of documentations, features etc)
- Titanium Appcelerator (Free, works better than the other for cross platform application frameworks)
- Sencha Touch
- Mono http://www.mono-project.com/Main_Page
- Adobe AIR
- Unity 3d
If I were you I will give a try to Titanium Appcelerator, in case you want to make a game now they also offer a payed game engine, Platino.
BTW a suggestion that I give to you, is to consider the complexity of the application that you have to make, because if it's very particular or resource intensive, you will be badly deluded by those frameworks, and you will spend 10x times fixing the issues other than coding 2 native applications for android and ios standalones.
So take that path only if the application let you do it, with few customization and pretty much straightforward.

These two guys above me have the right idea, the tools they listed are amazing, along with everything else mentioned. I was going to bring up the Intel XDK (IDE as a Chrome Extension === mind blown ) but it's still pretty beta
Delphi XE5
I think that at the moment the best framework that is cross platforms including windows, android, iOs and so on is Firemonkey from Embarcadero
MonoTouch, the productivity gains from C# are huge, and the framework and APIs are just that much more thought out. Plus, async/await
Unity is fantastic. Titanium Studio is useles junk for me.
CocoonJS.
Fast html5 fraemwork ( javascript + canvas)
works with Box2d.
ludei.com
Use Qt. Nothing will have performance near that.
