Sluggish Acer N311 - General Topics

Hello.
I'm dealing with this PDA that's from a friend. He told me that it's very slow (it had WM5). I update with some homemade ROMs to see what happens and the result has been really annoying:
Operations are sluggish. Even the screen aligning process is horribly sluggish. Everything is slow as hell. The screen seems to miss some taps, too.
What's the problem? Somebody with this problem?
EDIT: I have seen that the touch screen is failing! The taps are hold when the stylus is not on the screen. Could it be a failing touch screen?

Well, later to have checked and tested intensively I've come to the conclusion that this lack of responsiveness is produced due to a hardware error. The touch screen is failing and the CPU processes a large a mount of taps without actually touching it, so it's too busy to process any other task properly.
I hope this help to anyone having the same problem.
Thank

Issue with touch screen ?
Concerning your sluggish PDA, is there a plastic film to protect the screen ?
Some plastic films may cause very weird behaviours as the screen could be fooled and act as if some point on it would be touched. It's all the more true when the film is in contact with both the screen and its frame, due to bad alignment when sticking it.
I had a similar issue with a Tomtom One (1st issue) and was about to send the device back to warranty... everything was solved when removing the protective film !
It's rather obvious with first generation films that were really thicker than new ones.
Hope I was of help...

if you cant fix it and are going to get rid of it i will take it off you. mines motherboard is scrambled, but the screen is fine.
thats if your getting rid of it.

Squeaking noise at top of the screen ?

After the squeaking back cover of the Touch Dual, another noisy HTC unit ! At least my test unit it seems...has anyone else noticed that when you tap at the top of the screen, say the x box, when you let it go there is a noise of something coming unstuck/unglued ?
If you swipe your thumb from let to right applying some gentle pressure it is event more obvious. Anyone else or is my screen maybe not properly glued on...
I listened really closely, and the only sound I could detect was my oily finger coming off the screen! You may have a defective unit because I don't seem to detect the problem you are talking about. Hope this helps!
Yes, thanks, will need to take it back then, just my luck !
You did apply some moderate pressure didn't you ? It's particularly noticeable around the loudspeaker and camera openings. Or it maybe static I'm hearing, doubt it since I don't have the noise at the bottom of the screen.
GpsPasSion
i tried several times but there's no noise.
Maybe u should check it with HTC or the store where u got it?
I
I have the same problem. On the top of the screen only
Rather annoying isn't it ? I have it on the sides a bit too, it seems to be worse when the screen is hot. Possibly the joint between the "touch" screen and the frame.
I guess I'll take it back but I think the guys are going to look at me "sideways" over there ;-) It seems to me the quality of HTC phones has been going down a bit lately, prices stay high though. I wonder if all the Cruise devices aren't going to develop that problem over time...
Hi,
I've got a similar problem. It also happens when I firmly press X, but the noise comes from the back cover (the antenna-box ) and it's because the back cover (top, not the battery cover) is not stuck tight enough (left side, so right side if you're looking from the front). Annoying? Maybe. Deffective? Not really I'll live with it
i have the same issue with the screen, i have done about 20 minutes of "up close and personal" tapping, pushing, etc and it is definately the screen...
not so worrying right now, BUT if it is loose now, how will it be in a few months.
i had this same problem when buying a Nokia a while back, I went through 4 of them sitting in the store and they all had the same problem, so i gave up and bought a different phone.
i wonder how Devicewire will handle this? as i really dont want to, nor can i be without the phone for too long, but obviously i dont want a faulty unit.
Devicewire if you are listening out there can you advise?
So it seems there are a few of us with that issue, on mine it definitely comes from the front part, not the back. I think I'll take it back and try another one, if it has the same problem I'll pass on the Cruise and get a refund, it really isn't very acceptable to have that type of problem on a €500+ device ! I don't remember reading about any such problems with the Touch or Touch Dual, HTC must have skimped on the glue this time around!
I have triesd to reproduce the screen problems, but I do hear anything at all.
Overall I really like the device, notwithstanding the slightly slow graphics when watching video (although MUCH better than my old Samsung SCH-i730).
T
I have it too. I noticed it after putting on the screenprotecor...and i'm suspecting it has somthing to to with it. The protector is really stiff so it may just be it making that noise....in my case at least...
That might come into play I guess, but mine really had a problem, I took it back to the shop and I had a hard time getting the guys to acknowledge it, but one of them had his own Cruise and when I pressed on the side there was no squeaking at all so that sealed the deal. Unfortunately they had no spare unit so I had to settle for a voucher...
I too have been experiencing the same from the top of the screen after long use It´s a pain, as I am really happy with the Polaris but for the money you´d expect better. I removed the screen protector to see if that was the problem but the sound is still there. It only goes away after the screen has been off for a while.
I have spoken to the shop where I bought it but they said I should get in touch with HTC, however if a lot of devices have the same problem hardly seems worth sending it away....
Anyone else have the same problem???

I Have the same problem but it comes from the screen protector, cuz I get some air between the screen and the protect.
OK... but the problem I have is definately not related to the screen protector as it´s still there without it.
No squeaks at all on the Orbit 2 - I wonder if it's confined to the TC case?
I've got the same squeeking thing with the screen, but it really isn't critical. What is really annoying is the knocking sound that the volume slider produces when shaked or just given a little finger punch. What do you guys say?Is yours fixed tight?
Same problem here. But it takes my mind off what the wife's saying when I'm on the phone to her!
Having the squeaking too, as most of you its still there without the protector
anybody get any noises from the d-pad? whenever i press left, it makes a double click (the standard click when you press in any direction, but after that, it seems to stick a little and click again as if it's sticking to something when i press down, then unsticks and makes a click when that happens). it's bugging the crap out of me and it only does it when i press left. if i press left hard, it stops doing it for 30 seconds or so.. it's not as if i spilled soda or anything on it and it is brand spanking new..

HTC Fuze (Raphael)(P4600) TouchFlo 3D Not working

hi!
This is my first post here. I have the following problem: yesterday my phone was fine...today not. Yesterday I was using the touch screen as usual with no problem, today the battery was to low and I turned off the phone. When I get back home, I connected the phone to charge it, and PUF!! the touch screen was not working at all...sometimes I can tap some menu, sometimes not, but in general terms, I can only use my phone with the keyboard. I did a soft and hard reset and nothing happened, I don´t know what else to do. I see this is kind of common problem, but no one has a common solution. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
My phone has windows mobile 6.1 Professional. CE OS 5.2.19971 (Build 19971.1.2.6)
ROM version 1.95.502.5 WWE
Radio version 1.02.25.32
Protocol version 52.39c.25.22H
u were able to use the windows 6.1 explorer? like looking for files under files explorer with no problem?
my phone is just as new as yours, i feel so frustrated! I was able just to use the keyboard, no touch screen commands were functioning. As i said, I have seen too many people complaining about this (if I would have known that, I would´nt buy this piece of crap)

At any time did you apply too much pressure on the screen?
Is your d-pad still working?
What about other hardware buttons besides the keyboard?
As I said, one day was working perfectly, and next day a kept it turned off since the battery was gone, and I was not at home to recharge it. So basically one day was fine and 12 hours later was not. The rest of the buttons are fine.
I did a hard reset, and at some point of the process the device indicates that I need to align screen, so a small cross show up in the middle of the screen (yo oughta know how is this...) well: I tap the cross and nothing happens....I tapped again...and nothing happens...3 tries later, finally the cross moves and the process goes on, To complete the process it takes me about 15 minutes!!!!!! but still nothing works out, the align screen process starts over again, and thats it!
At least, before the hard reset I was able to start my phone....now is impossible
Dont know what to do...

well then you have several options:
1) bring phone back to the entity you purchased it from considering you stated it was new it should be covered under warranty unless you purchased it from eBay w/o warranty
2) If you know it is the Touch Screen then I suggest using xda search function and searching "Think your digitizer is broken" and apply it the Fuze rather than the Tilt
3) attempt to replace the screen
4) sell it "as-is" for a loss
Problem solved!!!
Thanks guys for the suggestions. This seems to be a very common problem. But in my case the solution was simpler than I would ever though!! I read in other posts that this unresponsive touch screen problem is usually created by particles of dust, (sand! in my case), stuck in that tiny gap between the screen cover and the phone body, and the solution was to gently pass a piece of paper thin enough, (flexible plastic CD cover, in my case) well....Having tested all kinds of software """solutions""", and been prepared to pay for an expensive fix (I live in Costa Rica, this kind of phones are not common use, so fixes are expensive)...so I gave I try to this solution...and surprisingly IT WORKED...there were lots of dust, and even sand grains stuck in that gap, and like the phoenix...my phone got back to life!
Its amazing how delicate are these devices!! I think they are intended for enclosed-temp-controlled-ultraclean places only.
I hope this helps a lot of people having the same problem.
Thanks!

More info needed on "HTC fuze touch screen not working"
Hey, Ive tried following the thread about the htc fuze touch screen not working... up until the part about sand in 'some space between something...'
can someone provde more context/ pics? of where the sand might be.. because it sucks trying to use the fuze without a touch screen.
thanks for the help.
and the HTC customer support immediate went to the "well just hard reset the phone"... how quickly they are willing to erase all that data and hours of work to reconfig the phone..
any help is appreciated...
They were talking about the tiny gap between there the top layer of the screen (the material you touch) comes into contact with the body I believe. What you can try doing is running a piece of paper or something thing enough to wedge out the dirt in that area.
another somewhat common problem is the newton ring. You'll see an oily residue in the center area of your screen (it looks like rainbows). What I believe happens with this is your screen gets stuck to the actually LCD display underneath and doesn't bounce back to go back to it's resting state. What some people have said is to get some sort of adhesive material and use that to pull the screen up gently, so it goes back to resting. People have used tape and the such. Just be careful you don't pull the screen off your device.

Touch Sensitivity

Hey is anyone elses GTab's touch sensitivity kind of off?
I noticed, compared to the iPad and Galaxy Tab, some times it takes me 2-4x of tryinng to press something to get it going.
Its almost like the screen cant pick it up sometimes. And sometimes when scrolling, it selects things, when im just Trying to scroll..
Also the top left HOME button on screen is always iffy, most times ill need 2-4 more times 2 press it to get it going.
I am using TNT 2.2.
Anyone else noticed this? i feel like its hardware.
Definetely not as responsive as my EVO. Maybe its the cheap screen. I wish it could be fixed via software, but fat chance. I guess not all capacitive screens are created equal.

You nailed it. IMO Samsung has been making the best color screens for years.
Have had absolutely no problems with touchpad responsiveness from my gTab... Just as sensitive and responsive as my Dinc.
Really does seem like this hardware is hit or miss... Some tabs have no issues some have many.
You guys are just plain spoiled. I've gone through Palm IIIx to now the gTablet, and it just simply has the most responsive touch screen that I've ever used, but I've had recent experience with the dreadful Augen GT and the slightly less dreadful White Pandigital Novel, both of which had worse touch screens than other devices that I've used.
One thing that I do, do for the gTab though is to clean the screen quite a bit. At a minimum I do so before every use as I find the fingerprint/body oils buildup to be annoying in fairly short order and it might have some impact on touch responsiveness. It's the worst fingerprint magnet that I've ever seen actually...
No issues here with single touch sensitivity, pretty good on that. Just as good as my Nexus One. Multitouch and pinch-to-zoom still a bit flaky. I am hopeful that will be resolved by software and/or driver improvements, as it was on the Nexus One.
The only issues I have are when the screen is too dirty or too clean. When I really scrub and clean the glass off entirely, at first it's a bit too "sticky" almost when my finger contacts it - maybe that's because it's winter here in the Northeast and my skin is dry. Once I've used it a bit and it gets some finger grease on it, it works perfectly. But if it gets grit or solid dirt on it, that can definitely interfere with the touch screen too, as with any capacitive screen.
I suspect the optimal thing would be a really good screen protector that's easy to clean and has that smooth finger contact feeling out of the box, like the iPad's glass does, for example, which I think has something to do with the oleophobic coating.
Typing this on my gtablet. The issue for me is the keyboard. There are parts of the screen that are unresoonsive making some letters not get tapped. The A key and l keys in particular. As a result I can't type smoothly or naturally because I will make several errors along the way. This does not happen onky iphone or my wires ipad.
it might bemy rrleason for sending it back as it takes too ongoing totyr correctly and I get tire d of all the corrections.
Well if your using the stock tnt keyboard, it sucks. We can learn from the ipad, with the size of the screen it has huge keys that cover a lot more of the screen then our stock tnt keyboard. I use smart keyboard pro with the key heights set to maximum and it works so much better, like 100x better. Even has voice to text.
Can people check their keyboard? I find that if I type most of the keys they type fine. However, the letter a key seems to only work when pressed offcenter which prevents. From typing properly as I must deliberately slow down and make sure it is correctly typed otherwise I get many errors. Could this be a defect in my screen?
Or is this a ui problem with tnt?
This could be a deal breaker as I misspelled every word if. Has h letter A
Letter A
I have the same problem with the letter A, and sometimes P. Otherwise touch is great
Figured why this tablet is driving me nuts. There are two dead zones on this tablet. Someone please do this test so I can figure out if this is just my tablet or all g tablets.
Download mulitouch vis test. Do rapid light touches in the area where the 'a' key is and delete key are. If I do this test in the middle of the screen it registers every single tap. But in those two areas I can sometimes tap 10 times in a row and not have a single tap register.
If this all g tablets then I think it's going back.
Also is there a keyboard with arrow keys? Trying to place the cursor can be a real pain.
Agreed bout the dead spots. The stock tap n tap western keyboard seems tominimize them due to the angles but if I try another keyboard I miss the a and the return button all the time

Downloaded the app as well because I, too, am having the same screen non-responsiveness issue. Lo and behold the area where the "L" key is is a pretty dead spot. It would register about 40% of the quick taps I did in that area. Is this is a software issue? If so, I can live with it and hope our wonderful devs release a software build that resolves this otherwise, this thing may be going back because it's driving me up the wall!
I do see the occasional missed tap here and there, but no consistent dead areas that I've noticed (the A and L buttons on keyboard seem fine to me).
Multitouch sensitivity is wayyyyy mis-calibrated though - you have to use very heavy finger presses to get multitouch to register. This is some sort of driver or calibration issue that should be easily solved.
I found a binary called TSCalibration in the /system/bin directory on my VEGAn ROM G Tablet. Tried running it from terminal, but it seems to be looking for a calibration.ini file on the SDCard. I'd be willing to bet we could figure out how to fix some of the touchscreen issues with some work, because I suspect they are principally software related.
If your issues with the touchscreen are anything like this...exchange it...
My new one requires very little effort if any at all to get the screen to respond...
However, if you're talking about the once in a while miss of a touch...yes, I agree with cutterjohn....you're spoiled. Return the device asap, so I could pick it up from an outlet...please?

There is a big difference between these dead spots and the occasional miss. I have no problem with the occasional miss. I just have to adjust to how my finger touches the tablet to get more consistent hits.
There are areas of my tablet that consistently do not behave like the other areas. Does that sound normal to you? I can't have a tablet where anything in the 2 corners is extremely inconsistent. If I have the tablet oriented a certain way the soft-buttons get put into one of the bad corners and that is really frustrating.
I don't think it is how I am holding it because the problem follows the physical corners and it is not relative to my hand. So that rules that out. And I washed my hands and gave the tablet a good cleaning so dirt/grease/grime is not an issue either. It could have been too clean but why only two corners?
I have many weeks to go on my 30 days so I will keep screwing with it to see if I can come up with anything that is a workaround or explains why it is happening. It is insanely fast and it's modding future looks extremely bright with such talented people. If I get fed up enough, I'll exchange it and hopefully get one with a even touch response for the whole screen or simply return it and wait a couple more months for Honeycomb tablets.

Whoa. That video was pretty bad. While mine is not like that (thank God), I just tried hitting the app drawer key and it only registered after the 13th tap?!?! seriously wtf. While it isn't a "dead zone" per se, that's still pretty bad. There has to be a software fix to recify this issue with the right side of the screen. (my "L" and "delete" button are pretty bad as well).
THAT is a defective product...
I'll do another video to compare with my new one...WITH funky assed salty sweat all over the screen. Works flawlessly...
Is your model that is working well running stock firmware and keyboard?
mine is tent lite and the stock keyboard is ok. It if I try to use the alternative keyboards then I get consistent misses on key presses especially on the letter a.
I'm always tapping *constantly*, like 10-20 times on certain spots around the corners and edges of the screen, I'm about to return mine because of this.. Believe I'm still in the 2 weeks with office depot, will have to go snag the $350 one over at sears and hopefully it will come with a screen protector this time (this one I have didn't come with one, wonder if that has to do with the dead spots)..

A510/A700 Senstivity Test

Hi guys.
Before buying my A510, I used to have a SGT 10.1. I sold off my SGT 10.1 2 weeks before getting my A510, so I was never able to do side-by-side comparison between the two.
However, judging by the response in the forums at that time and by my personal usage, it was clear that the Acer tablet had some serious sensitivity issues. I couldn't confirm how bad, but it was bad enough to be noticeable by me based against my SGT 10.1.
To me, the worst thing is when putting the tablet on a hard flat surface, like a table. This is where the sensitivity, for some weird r!eason, takes a very BAD hit. I just got a Note 10.1 yesteray, and used both side by side. The Note could flawlessly take input when laid flat on a table. But not the A510.
Any idea why? Do try if your tab takes a hit when placed on a flat surface and let me know.
Thanks
I had an A510 that I returned for just that reason; sensitivity not only took a hit, it became almost useless when laid on a table. Problem was compounded by a screen protector. A700 seems much better. However the most recent update (1.029 -> 1.057) actually made things worse as far as the touch screen. For a while I flashed back to 1.029. Then I decided to update to 1.057 and root, and now I am using Acer Liquid Settings program which requires root & seems to help sensitivity. I am typing this flat on a table with only 1 or 2 missed touches for this reply, all in the 1st sentence.
Edit: There is a YouTube video that illustrates this problem in the A510 Search A510 problem on YouTube.

Indeed, I have EXACTLY the same problem as that in the video. The actionbar is TOTALLY unusable on a table. When I lift and use it in my hands, things are much better but still very much worse compared to other tablets.
Now, the thing is, from what I read, an update from Acer caused this issue. Can anybody vouch for that?
I got my tablet in mid-June, and by then it was running on the latest version. I've not gotten any new updates to fix this issue. Assuming it is a software problem, why hasn't Acer issued a hotfix? Also, this must mean ALL A510s are affected right?
screen protector?
ok, may sound a bit weird, but i experienced exactly the same "issue" on my a700. if i use the tab in bed or in the stand i got no touchscreen response. but this inresponsiveness has startet sometimes after mounting a screen protector at the tab. it just takes a while, until i recognised this behavior. travelling around the last weeks and was trying to navigate through the music library at the hotel brought the problem up first time.
since i removed the protector foil, the touchscreen response is back in all situations.
regards
There have been past threads on different devices that point to a grounding issue when this occurs. Your body is a conductor when holding the tablet so it works better. If the device is grounded properly then there isn't an issue either way. If your saying this was the result of an update then that's better then a hardware issue since it can be fixed much easier, once the company is made aware of the issue of course.
Don't hold your breath...

Yes a software issue can be fixed more easily...
IF the company decides to acknowledge the problem, act on the information and then go to the (likely considerable) expense of creating and releasing an update to address the problem. There have been many reports of this touch screen issue in the A51x & A7xx Iconias throughout the Internet especially, but not exclusively, if one is using a screen protector. Amazingly Acer claimed to address this in most recent OTA update for A700 (1.057), which was stated to address touch screen issues; it only made them worse on my A700. Go figure.
So I have the A700 and do not find any difference in touch sensitivity between the tablet laying down on a table and it being in my hands. Are you guys finding a big difference between the two?
Unfortunately it doesn't mean its perfect as I do struggle with touch sensitivity with the edges of the screen sometimes, which can be annoying as a lot off apps/browsers tend to put buttons in the corners.
Quick fix is to toggle the screen sensitivity everytime you boot up. (Change to medium then back high again, you do this every boot.)
A more permanent solution (applicable to the A510 only), is to flash NoThrills' optimized A510 rom along with the included NoThrills Kernel. This has solved my screen sensitivity issues.

Oh my God, you're so damn right! One of the first things I did when I got my tablet was putting the sensitivity to high, and I have never changed it since. Now that you mention, I put it to medium, then immediately high. Using the tablet on a flat surface is possible...my taps get registered flawlessly.
So, this means it is not something wrong with the display panel itself, but a software issue. Here's to hoping that Acer will fix it. Really weird man.
PS: Is there a code that I could tweak in the buil_prop maybe? I don't want to be flashing ROMs at the moment.
I was also wondering whether screen sensitivity could be addressed in build.prop. Anyone know?

I currently do not know of any build.prop or init.d solution. (So I guess it's more complex than I thought it would be.)
As mentioned though, I don't have the sensitivity issues anymore since using NoThrill's Optimized A510 WW ROM (The kernel was the one that fixed it I think, since I flashed Acer's stock kernel and I got my sensitivity issues back.)
So you might wanna consider flashing a new rom, or, flashing a new kernel at least.

[Q] Dropped my OPO, now a section of the touchscreen is unresponsive

Since I have had the OPO I have had intermittent issues with the touchscreen requiring reboot to solve. Since upgrading to CM12 the issues seem to have largely subsided but last night I dropped the handset from about 18 inches off the ground. The top left corner of the screen shows a bit of cracking on the glass and now I notice that there is an area in about 1/3 of the touchscreen that is unresponsive. The lower and upper parts of the screen work but now there are some apps and functions I cannot use with the touchscreen and I notice I have having a lot of trouble with the pattern unlock screen as well.
My question is whether the entire digitizer screen will need to be replaced or if there is a possibility that the ribbon connectors or some other connection is possibly causing this issue. I have attached here a pic of the physical damage and a screencast of multitouch test that I ran to demonstrate the area affected. It seems to start around y0=400 and continue to y0=1100 or so which is quite frustrating. In the video I am just running my finger up and down the screen and also across diagonally to demonstrate the problem areas.
Apparently I cannot post Youtube links since I am a new member but the video is on there posted under
"OPO touch screen issues after drop"
Anyone with insight would be much appreciated as I certainly would not like to have to tear this phone down and replace the screen assembly.
I doubt it's a ribbon cable, otherwise your whole screen would be dodgy. I think you need a new digitizer + LCD.
Here's a link for the video you are trying to link to.

Hope someone here has some good news for you.
