Xda Uploads - The new way to share ROMs - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro ROM Development

I've noticed that many developer use Rapidshare, Megaupload, etc to share their ROMs, however these sites are very annoying in that they throttle bandwidth, force you to wait, force one download at a time, etc - unless of course you are willing to pay.
I have attempted to help a number of ROM developers by granting them FTP access to my hosting - but I have realised that this is only a temporary measure - and that a better way must exist.
So the solution it here - Xda Uploads - http://xdauploads.vidmes.com
Developers can upload their ROMs to a temporary location on my site via FTP then, using Xda Uploads, they can move the file into their own folder in the http://vidmes.com/xda/ folders.
At the moment it is still in beta, and a number of features are missing - but, depending on the feedback from developers, features will be added and bugs fixed.
So, Xda Upload!
NOTE: All those who already have FTP accounts from me are welcome to keep them and assist in moderating\maintaining the xda folders

Excellent!!!

How about adding some of the originial roms like the WM5 OEM/Operator ROMS as well ...or is there a legal issue there?

Go for it
If there is a legal issue, then I'll get an email from my hosting company and I'll pull the offending material down. Worst case, my site goes down for a couple of days (and this has happened before...).
btw. I haven't seen anyone sign up yet :'( (but that isn't an excuse for anyone to register - I'd rather keep this as a Dev\Cook\Senior Member service...)

New standard of xda-file uploading/downloading ~ READ

THIS WOULD BE A FREE SERVICE, OFFERED TO ALL XDA-MEMBERS
alright, while sitting in the xda IRC somebody complained about everyone using rapidsahre links, them dying, and the need for a new XDA posting service.
this coupled with the completely empty XDA ftp, we got to talking. Chainfire suggested using usenet for the roms/files/whatever. he said he attempted to get it more widely used years ago, but nobody really cared.
now, my thought is i setup a webUI frontend for the xda usenet group, and make it alot like the current xda-ftp stucture is. simple uploading, simple downloading. no real knowedlge of usenet needed to do it, and the files would be good for at least a year on the servers.
maybe even write a FTP frontend for the group.
what are your guy's thoughts on this. no download limits, no YOU HAVE TO WAIT 9HOURS TO DOWNLOAD ANOTHER ROM, no YOURE ALREADY DOWNLOADING A FILE LOLWAIT, no random deletions of files, uncensored content uploading(you can figure what that means), and super-fast downloading of ROMs, with a que.
we need your thoughts on this project.
edit:
usenet is a pay service, however the concept of this is to provide a free frontend for the usenet posts to the xda community. IT WILL BE FREE.
IT WILL BE FREE
I'm pdbogen, and I approve of this message.
/me is in favor and would love to help make this happen somehow.
posting in an epic thread
i believe this is a genius plan. I SHALL HELP MAKE IT HAPPEN!
I'm all for faster file transfers and less "LOL YOU BETTER WAIT BECAUSE YOU'RE A NOOB" messages.
Who would be supplying the servers? And how much would it cost to set up?
between me and turbzy, we have enough resources/servers to handle a good 3 mirrors of the setup, so we're good on the money/servers.
we just have to write the webinterface and get people to use it.
if you and the freenode crew whip up something good and badass, i will aggressively promote it on my heavily-trafficked websites
(bumping thread)
very nice idea indeed, just what xda was missing =]
This sounds awesome, I say go for it!
me and turbzy will start work on this as soon as we get a few uploaders/chefs willing to use the new system in place of rapidshare.
it's toomuch work to just write and then have wasted because nobody uses it.
the idea is, we're going to maybe write a built in FTP server. so as far as uploading is concerned to upload a file you'll
a) go to the site, and be presented with a upload form. just select the zip/rar and press upload. it'll upload to the multiple backend servers, and give you a direct link. OR possible upload it to a few other options, im thinking maybe add a rapidshare+mediafire+multiple FTP mirrors.
or b) connect to our custom FTP server and upload the file that way. after the file is completed, it will upload it to the other servers and give you the direct url. i'll make a more simplistic description later.
all in all, everyone i've talked ot about the idea thinks its genius. help us get people on board=
oh also, i'm thinking there may be a registration system needed for uploading. it's unfortunate we couldnt just sync it with the XDA login system, but it'll be needed to post verified files. it'd be better for file organization and whatnot.
then again, we may be able to sync with the XDA userdatabase if it gets big enough.

I doubt Flar and company would let you touch the user database. However, maybe they could host the front-end on their servers? For example: fileshare.xda-developers.com
That would then interact with all your middleman servers, etc etc.
So the XDA server would just be the front-end, but it would redirect the file to your servers... is this possible?
Or even better, have XDA auth the user (via login to the forums) and then have it redirect to your server with some fun authing stuff. Then you guys don't need the database, but it would still be secure.
yaaaap. that was my idea, just attempt login. much simpler and lord knows precious xda administration wouldnt dare have their hands on a project meant to..actually maintain the files produced by the community!
they won't help us. even if they offered, i think running them seperate from this site is better and safer.
bump because i actually care about the project.
just a thought and i didnt see it covered
how will the virus scanning be implemnted. will you put a system in place at you end so its get scanned after uploadthen accepted or will you be asking the uploaders to scan them.
just a note because im pretty sure the current FTP scans files and lets you know whether the threaten. but if you leave it multiple uploaders then maybe well get ton of viruses littering the database
i am unsure as to how to handle that. thats why im thinking a user database would be useful, somehow mark the legit uploads with a key of some sort. i'll think about that, but im sure we can handle that.
from what ive seen clamav is pretty easy to tack on to whatever system youre using
edit: as for user database integration, all we'd need xda to do is toss a small api on their server that lets us verify accounts and return a userid that we can associate posts with. we wouldn't need actual access to the database
all im saying is yes you can verify the user who uploads the stuff
but we can verify the stuff
there was a problem a while back with ppl adding cracked apps to the ftp and viruses aswell
i don't think we care about cracked apps. thats somewhat the point.

well I think you should. This isn't a warez site, nor should it be affiliated to anything to do with it.
It sounds more to me like you're trying to set up a new warez service based on the good name of xda-devs!

Central ROM Storage | New Site | Theme Uploading

Tired of running around the web or through the forum to find the links to your favorite ROM and then having to wait to download it? Well so was I. So I took all the ROMs here and put them on my file server. You can find it at http://biggz.dontexist.com:14725/ . I have all the current ROMs up as well as the latest recovery and the asroot2 exploit. I'll try to minimize downtime as much as possible. I just wanted to give back somehow. If you want any other files hosted just let me know.
**New Site**http://roms.the-littles.com Thanks to sacker12345 for this!!
Its Spring time. Well almost. Anyway time to clean house. Anything you feel is not needed anymore let me Know below. If I get enough requests for the same file, say bye bye to it.
Notice: Please be patient my upload speed isn't the greatest. For the ROMs it may take up to an hour or more for a download to complete.
For Devs and Cookers only: If you would like to upload files directly to my server please pm me and I'll set you up with an account.
My Creations
Biggz Black Espresso Theme .1
Please let me know if you find any artifacts or fcs. If you can point to a particular file in it that would be a great help. Currently only applies to the system and none of the apps.
Please backup before this!!!
**NEW** FTP Server!!!
Now you can use your favorite FTP client to get your ROMs
Server is on the same address just one port up, 14726
User name is embedded in attached image to prevent bots.
The current items list is removed due to the fact that it is just too large now.
you'll kill yourself trying to keep up with newer rom's once more devs start cooking roms. it was tried in the dream forum but abandoned after a month due to to much upkeep.
Androidspin.com
although they dont have any CDMA as of yet.. its still a great place for kitchens
Well with all the work the devs do I figure I can do this up to date. I visit every time I look at my laptop so I can catch the new ones that come up.
I'd be very careful if I were you. I don't know anything about your domain, but bear in mind that lots of ROM downloads will chew through bandwidth allowances like nobodies business. Most domains will have strict limits as to how much traffic your site is allowed to generate.
Regards,
Dave
This is running off my personal computer so I can have as much as I need. The domain name is DNS mask.
Hmm, I'd add the RUU factory flash EXE on there, too. That thing was a real ***** to find.
hey thanks for putting this all together.you the maaannnn, lol.
XDA RULEZZ!!
Huge help.
Thank you!
Good work biggz.
thanks for the post
Thanks alot for putting this on here . you saved me for search and you had some stuff that couldnt be downloaded. Hey you should make this a sticky.
Just let you know, you are missing another CMDA Hero ROM: Gutted Hero 1.5.
Thanks for all the attention guys. If you want it stickied bug the mods!
You should consider putting links to the threads and sites of the roms. People can just use the search, but there are several I have never heard of on your list, and was looking for informations.

As a small favor in exchange for this service I'm providing I want to ask that you bug HTC for the kernel source for our Hero going along the lines of this thread.

Hey, the 2.1 dev thread has been updated (just today in fact)... just to let you know.
Somewhere in the range of 170 downloads and 5.5 GB transferred. Thanks for the loyalty and helping me stick it to my ISP.

Free hosting with DDL for all developers

http://mhamptontech.com/sgs4g/
I am working to create an archive of all roms, source code, modems, and kernels for the Galaxy S 4G. I am adding them as I download them and am working to make this a complete source for everything related to this phone. This site will remain up forever and will provide people with whatever they need.
If developers would like to use this to host their roms I can create an FTP account for them upon request, or I will add it within a few days of it's post in the forums. The only thing I ask is that people don't post links to these roms in other locations and instead link to the forum post of the developer. Support our developers!
I have plenty of space and bandwidth to host anything and everything, but if developers use their FTP to host non-Android things their account will be removed. Also donations are always appreciated as server space costs money!
I would love to have an ftp. I have been having space issues everywhere. Could you PM me when you have it set up?
Nice

Sure thing airfluip I'll get to that as soon as I have FTP working properly.
I'll be working on filling in everything over the next few days. After that if there is anything I don't have there feel free to make requests.
not trying to knock your suggestion cause i think its a great idea, but this should be in the general section and not the dev section. believe it or not, but the devs do check that section every so often. one thing i would like to ask though is, how much space and bandwidth do you actually have, cause if its limited, there might be some issues since the dev work gets downloaded from here A LOT and with updates and all that, it will just eat at your bw. also with the space, if devs keep developing more roms/scripts/kernels or whatever they develope, that too will get eaten up. like i said though, i think its a great idea and if you would like, pm me or hit me up on gtalk [[email protected]] and maybe we can talk about this some more.
agreed.....
Space I have 60GB, and I have another server with 250GB that I can overflow to if necessary. Bandwidth, I have 2TB, and another server that has 3TB if it runs out. I'm not going down without a fight .
Also, if this should be in general. A mod can move it .

here's the deal guys. any devs who want ftp access to my server, just pm me. same rules will apply when uploading. what i'll probably be doing is create seperate folders for each dev who wants access and set it up so they only can access that folder via ftp, that way there won't be any accidental deleting from other devs. so if you want access, pm me here or hit me up on my gtalk [[email protected]]

Yes... "Accidental" deleting... Muahahaha.
This makes me so happy, awesome work. I had the same thought a few months ago, except my thought was to build it into an app for easy navigation and downloading. (I usually cwm flash from sd downloads)
This site semi-eliminates the need, but also would make it easier to build since there are clean direct links for download. Any objections to me toying around with that? Or if any other devs want to run with my idea, that's cool.. (understanding that it was intended to be a free app for us xda sgs4g users.)
currently i have only one person who wants to use my host. not bad since we've only started this a few days ago. as of right now, i'm currently playing with some flash templates for the home page to make it look good. there's nothing special there now, but i'll be updating it as i get my flash skills perfected once again. its been a while since i've played with flash. see you all around.

[Q] new Hosting sites for roms!?

I Haven't seen anyone address the recent actions of the government cracking down on the hosting sites. i just tried to see if could download a rom, and as i suspected most hosting sites are now restricted ( probably all under investigation, megaupload.com being the only one i know of getting shut down.)
anyway the question that i am trying to get across is,
Is there a hosting site that is safe to use for roms, or might roms have to go the torrent route(i would hate to see that)?
.
Thread moved to Q&A due to it being a question. Would advise you to read forum rules and post in correct section.
Failure to comply with forum rules will result in an infraction and/or ban depending on severity of rule break.
pardon my mistake i had many tabs open and thought i was in the questions one, should have made the extra check.
my Apologies .

im not quite sure where mediafiles servers are located, since the whole pipa and sopa thing happened, Hosting sites are getting restriced on what they can do, ( i am under asumption that they are under investigation) one example is :
- x x x.filesonic.com/file/OHSIyxs - replace the x's with w's

Bitdroid - Dedicated Android ROM Torrent Tracker

Bitdroid - Home | Bitroid - Tracker | Bitdroid - Forum
Introducing Bitdroid! The dedicated torrent tracker for Android ROMs!
After a couple of weeks of trial-and-error, I have finally got a torrent tracker site setup and running for Android ROM developers; a place for them to create and track a torrent for their ROMs.
Why use a torrent tracker like Bitdroid.org versus regular download links? Easy: better flow of download traffic, which equates to faster downloads!
Peer-2-Peer, or P2P, (torrents in this case) are better for high-flow traffic compared to normal HTTP (sites like Mediafire) or FTP. In HTTP or FTP, users can only download, and it's only from a single server. The more people downloading a file from a single server, the slower the download for everybody on that server requesting the same file. This is not the case for P2P connections. Every user that's downloading, downloads from another user. All of the users download are also uploading to other users, so the traffic is not coming from a single source. It is coming from many sources, alleviating slow downloads, enabling higher traffic. P2P is a much superior way to distribute large files (such as Android ROMs).
So where did this idea come from? After the release of several popular ROMs, I saw people complaining about slow download speeds, and having to upload to several different download mirrors for others to download at a fast pace again, until those became "clogged" for a while as well. P2P, as previously mentioned, would have alleviated this and reduced (or even eliminated) the need for several HTTP / FTP mirrors. HTTP download links could still be provided, but torrent links could also be provided to help alleviate high traffic, congested downloads.
P2P also allows tracking and stats of an individual download. Each file is tracked by the amount of seeders (people uploading), leechers (people downloading), and total downloads.
I've searched, and I couldn't find a dedicated torrent tracker for Android ROMs; I could only find trackers for general use, or other specific uses (movies, games, etc.), of which not all of these are completely safe due to concern of possible copyrighted content. With Bitdroid, only Android ROMs are allowed, and it is preferred that the original developer of the ROM uploads the file (or with permission from the developer, a 3rd-party user could upload the ROM). Since Android is open-source, there aren't any legal concerns of piracy and such due the open-source licensing of the Android OS.
For an added layer of "security" only an approved member group is allowed to upload files. You must be manually added to the group before being able to upload torrents, to try and further discourage potential piracy or unauthorized uploading of ROMs.
I currently have a splash-page setup, that links to the actual tracker, as well as a forum (work-in-progress).
If you're a developer or know a developer, please sign up on the torrent tracker and/or forum and I can get you setup to upload your torrents, and don't forget to spread the word!
If you have any questions or comments, please either post here or on the website! Come and check it out!
Note: I have permission from YZ to post this.
Bump. Got mixed reviews in the Rezound forum about this; not much response from Dev's yet (which is what I would like the opinion of as well).
I think this is awesome!

Always been intrigued why no Android ROM developer uses torrent technologies... Even on questionable tracker as Pirate Bay (Yes, you can find legal stuff there ^^).
Now there is no excuse ! With this tracker, we can download almost eyes closed. And now, every body can help, even if no developer, even without giving money. Let's seed !
I'll warm up my seed box this evening !
we can only say you THANK alot and good job . but one thing ..

The idea is good, however i think having a ratio system on the site will do it more harm than good.
Unless you download the rom soon after its uploaded your probably going to struggle to seed it back, especially if its from a developer who updates the rom every couple of days. I think its very unlikely someone would download the older version once the next build is out.
Wow, my site made the front page news! Awesome .

Worry not, ratio is not a concern (but sharing what you download always looks good ).
