The wizard is dead - long live the wizard!
My little Wizy has left this earth in a futile and wasteful expression of dismay and discontent. (meaning the GF threw it out of the window during a disagreement).
So now that I am available again (both for a new phone and a new girlfriend) which one shell I get?
- Toshiba Portege G900
- Glofiish M800
- Tytn I
- Tytn II
- others?¿
I used my Wizard for appointments, email, browsing websites (I tried at least), recording phone calls (AudioNotes), GPS navigation (Mio), watching the odd TV episode of BGA/House and playing Worms/UFO Enemey Unknown.
I have a skype-in number and would like to start using it natively on the mobile for receiving calls (Call forwarding is costing me an arm and a leg).
For this purpose I will be migrating from Orange Pay as you go (GPRS) to Three, so I can make use of their cheaper/faster internet connection.
Opinions/suggestions?
I would say a Tytn II, its a good upgrade from a wizard. or a tytn if you feel that you still cant let the feel of a wizard go(size)
RIP...LOL...definately get the PPC (next time throw the GF out first! tytn or tytn2 (more $$) should work for U.
HTC Herald?
The Wizard was just about fast enough for Skype. The Herald with it's 200MHz isn't any better in that category, so that's a clear no.
No one for the high resolution devices? I know they cause problems for games, but web browsing got to be a blast on them.
Ah well... it will have to be a Tytn then, cheap as dirt these days (£75 @ CEX) and I can use my existing GPS with it.
Thanks guys!

I have an ongoing love hate realtionship, with my pda
its too un-reliable and maybe not the best for using daily, as a phone
but during a recent coach trip to london i fell back in love
while the guy next to me got out his PSP and gave me a look of superiority as he looked at my graphics on by braingym game, and made a scoffing expression
his smugness was shortlived as i surfed the net chatted to the other half on msn, played mp3 and took an incoming call or two
all i need now is a star trek or a mioa701 as my regular day to day phone and im set
after enjoying the exec maybe i can live with it soft resets, and other minor faults
I'd recommend Hermes over Mio as day to day phone, although obviously the GPS is helpful... not so much where I live, too many tall buildings, but nice idea...
I have to say that I've started using my Universal much more recently, lets say that with appropriate upgrades the high res screen really comes into its own. But Hermes still rocks for day too day use.
V
I must second that, i have recently fell "back in love" with my exec!!!
After a few months of research, trial, and error///
It seems I have it tuned and working well.
Qtek ROM
Spb Pocket Plus (Must Have)
Pocket Mechanic Pro (MUST HAVE)
TRE
Smart Tweaker
Opera
Pocket TV free
Pocket Music 4.3.4
Pocket Streamer
Pocket Informant
Palm Threaded SMS!!!!! (Must Have)
Virtual Earth Mobile
Google Maps Midlet\
SPB Backup (Must Have)
Resco File explorer
The biggest Dissapointment with the Universal thus far, has been poor BT...
I tried the Samsung Wep20, and The Jabra small one.... neither gave acceptable performance with the exec... I just got a motarola as a christmas gift! WOW> not much crackle or cutting in /out>>>>
AND now my voice dial over BT is working flawlessly!!!
Guess Ill stick with the Exec a while longer... Man it still has curb side appeal!!! I think I might be the only one in Mimai Beach with one>>>
except for CSI Miami TV....lol
And I saved a christmas party the other night, with my trusty mini-rca jack and PocketMusic... I didnt even need my turntables and serato scratch to bring the party to life!!! lol
One other cool thing: Sunguide here in South Florida has live streaming footage of traffic cams... I created a shortcut(flag Icon) to the link with SPB pocket plus... now I just tap the link, wmp opens and after a short buffer... im looking at a live stream!!!
Im such a geek!!!
Can anyone tell me which of these HTC machines I should go for...
* Qtek 9600 / HTC TyTN
or
* HTC P3600
I would like to have WLAN, ability to use VOIP sip phones on it, useful for navigator, I would prefer QWERTY but not 100% important... on which one of them can I also use TomTom or any of the navigation systems out there...
thanks for more information
Tytn
if you edit and re-title/subject you're more likely to get responses from people who have either or both devices.
But my choice will be the Tytn because 1 the HTC P3600 is not available where I am, 2 I'd miss the keyboard after having a Wizard and 3 looking at the wiki, they look the same except for battery life and mine gets plugged into my pc every day and charges anyway.
B
thanks bbobeckyj for ur response... I wonder what sort of keyboard is with the P3600 as I haven't seen any picture or any info about this. I also think the TyTN would be nice for its QWERTY since using P990i small QWERTY made my writing much fun...
I am basically planning to get either one of this gadgets basically for VoIP over WLAN purposes & navigation since I own a SE P990i which lack the VoIP from Skype or any SIP soft phone but I wont mind enjoying easy texting to webpages and emails...
sorry,
I wasn't very clear, what I meant to say was that they look the same except the keyboard AND the battery life,
there is no board with the p3600,
B
please what is the board and what keyboard is with the p3600? I am new with these machines but I want to know b4 i make the final decision...
thnx
no keyboard on p3600
There is NOT a keyboard with the p3600. I was a little unclear in my first reply.
They look the same except the Tytn has a keyboard but a shorter batery life.
So basically, do you want a keyboard or a thin phone?
Sorry for the confusion,
B
i would like to have a keyboard but if I know what is on the p3600, i can decide properly. how can i type SMS on the p3600 if there is no keyboard or physical dialpad?
thnx
Tytn vs 3600
The Tytn (also i-mate Jasjam, Dopod 838 Pro) has a sliding keybord. Type in Jasjam or Tytn to Google and you'll get 1000 pictures. The 3600 lacks the keyboard, but has a functioning GPS chip that is only waiting for a factory ROM to make it work. Unless they can solve some hardware issues the Tytn will never have GPS so you will need a Bluetooth GPS receiver with the Tytn. It will them work as a Navigator. Check

for just one reference.

pda phones have touch screens and support you writing sms's in handwriting on the screen or using the software keyboard in the software
p3450. herald (i think) is halfway between the wizard and tytn. look them all up on youtube to get a good view

thanks everyone for the input..i do like TyTN for the keyboard as it is quite stylish and fast to type SMS or use emails but with that P3600, it will be difficult to achieve that. I am indeed interest in the GPS and faster system in the P3600 but since many things even needs to be solved on the model,I better 4get about it
Thinking about a change in form factor and trying out the Vox but I'd like to hear some experiences of anyone who went from Hermes/touchscreen to smartphone format.
I'd love to wait for the rumored 'wings' S730 but not sure that will ever see daylight.
I had the TyTN via my employer for a few months, but had to return it when I left that job. Got a S710 and I actually like that more than the tytn. I thought I would miss the touch screen but the vox is so easy to navigate that it's no problem.

i have both the TyTN (cingular 8525) and the Vox in my hands.
I had the TyTN first as a replacement for my treo 600.
The TyTN is a wonderful device, but a bit too much for what I use it for (I dont even use data, so 3G doesn't matter to me). I mostly use WiFi for the occasional browse.
The TyTN definitely has a larger customization factor, which i miss with the Vox.
I thought speed would be a definite difference, but if you use OmapClock to ~250Mhz, it's a significant increase in performance.
Video playback works real nicely with TCPMP on the Vox too. Some video's i don't even need to convert. It may not be as powerful as the TyTN, but it's sufficient for my needs.
I like the Vox formfactor a bit better. The slider is much more secure, and the numeric keypad is something i missed on the TyTN.
Sometimes i catch myself tapping the Vox, forgetting there isn't a touchscreen, but the menu's and programs are very smartphone friendly, and I haven't had any problems navigating menu's as yet.
and for some reason, the screen on the Vox seems a bit nicer than on the TyTN. could be because the TyTN has the same resolution, but larger size, so it doesn't look as sharp.
i'm keeping the Vox, anyone want a TyTN?

How does it compare, size wise, to the Hermes?
the tytn is a giant compared to it
its much lighter than the tytn, i barely notice it on my waist holster
about 1cm shorter and 1.5cm slimmer
about the same thickness though
i can take some pictures when i get home
I had both a Wizard and a Tytn before I bought this device.
Those are more of PDAs that can be used for phones calls.
This is more of a PHONE that can be used from some PDA functions.
I see the Hermes and Vox in 2 totally different categorys.
BUT
I do miss touch screen, and I miss the SPEED...
My vox seems really SLOW AND LAGGING! Does anyone else have this problem????? Is there some fix i need to add or a certain ROM I need to install to make the run smoother??
The complaints I have about this device is its performance! I also find it is alot harder to type with a substanitally smaller keyboard. As well, WHY DOES IT SLIDE OUT "THE WRONG WAY"????? And no flashlight for the camera.
use OMAPCLOCK to overclock the vox
i notice a substantial difference, especially when switching apps and playing videos, and landscape switch is faster too
and if you notice it lagging still, go to task manager and see what you have open
one thing about the tytn i liked is the ability actually CLOSE programs and free up ram, not have them suspended

No X-Button for WM6 Standard?
i switched from tytn to s710 too. only missing voice command DE on my vox, since ist is only avalible in english for smartphones.
S710 is more compact and better to use, due the normal phone keys. i like it more. the only bad thing is the 200 mhz cpu, which is not the fastest...
the battery lifetime is much better, even with data and bt switched on. I use data to sync my exchange 24/7
.
I got my Vox a few days ago
Size difference between Vox and TyTn is like a Poodle compared to a Great Dane - huge difference. I'd never carry my TyTn in my pocket but I do my Vox easily.
Speed is a huge problem with my Vox but I will try to overclock.
Fiddle Factor - pain in the but but kinda fun changing the Home screen .xml files so you can get it the way you want it -- I had to modify to get GoodLink stuff while keeping PhoneAlarm running.
WiFi worked well at first glance - for some reason I had more trouble with my TyTN.
Many programs (that probably would be fine since I often don't use the touch screen) won't install on the Vox. Does anyone know how to easily "force" a PocketPC program on a Smartphone ?? (I haven't exhaustively searched that question so just ignore if the answer is obvious).
I'll keep you posted on my first week of use. I'll keep my TyTn in my briefcase.

Hello everyone, I'm an 1-week-vox owner.
Generally speaking I like the device very much, altough I am having some difficulties adapting from palm to WM6, and I must say I am a bit disappointed with WM6, namelly it is very slow and, something I found soooo odd and (sorry for sincerity) stupid: programs don't actually close/terminate when I close them (????).
So I have been searching the web for a program that would compensate that flaw (I consider it a flaw, at least the user should be given the option to configure the close button) and have tried:
magic Button
InClose
smClose
Running Programs 1
And, last but not least, HTC x-button.
None of these work on my s710, I guess it is because s710 is a smartphone and all those programs where designed for PPC.
Is there somewhere a WM6 for smartphone compatible program that makes the red-key actually close the programs? I don't need a task manager, just a simple, small app.
Thanks everyone
I recently switched from using the ATT Tilt to the Cruise (mainly because it's smaller/lighter to carry around) It's mainly working ok, but I have a few questions:
1) Does anyone know of a decent handwriting recognition software out there I could use? On the TILT i got used to the "block-recognizer," as the lesser of evils, but i would LOVE to find software that can use the whole screen. I use these devices a lot, so after a while that lower left corner becomes all scratched up (even using a screen protector) , and then you have to pay about $200 for a new screen, since the characters no long respond well to Block Recognizer. I"ve tried the "Transcriber" that comes with Windows Mobile 6, and it seems awful, as do the several other programs i found online, such as Pen Writer and Caligrapher, i think they're called? Back when i used Palm/Treo devices, i really loved the Teal Script program, but it doesn't seem to work for W Mobile? Anyone know of anything that could work??
2) Some things worked better on the Tilt, i guess becuase of the ATT software? For example, on Tilt you can use the word completion software in the Calendar mode, but on the Cruise it doesn't come up. And the word completion software "remembers" two-word or longer phrases in the ATT Tilt software, but not in the Cruise. Is there any work-around to be able to do this on the Cruise too??
3) Is it worth trying to upgrade to 6.1 on the Cruise, through some kind of cooked ROM, or better to wait until HTC finally (hopefully) releases the 6.1 ware??
Thanks much!!
Daniel
1. sounds like transcriber

Sorry, but Transcriber is already on the device, and it seem terrible to use?!! Isn't there ANYTHING out there that works ok??
Thx much!

I don't think the BB Mobile rep was supposed to let me get it yet as I thought it and the pre were due out on the same day? Of course, she was sweet and cute, but not very knowledgeable anyhow so it all worked out for me.
My HTC S511 came with Qualcomm 7625 528MHz processor. 192 MB of RAM with 80 MB for os as well as 256 MB of Flash memory of which the os takes up 160 MB. Software wise it ships with ROM version 1.14.651.1 dated 4/15/09 and radio version 1.25.05F. PRL version 60652 and PRI version 1.29_003.
Seems like a newer slimmer & lighter version of the Motorola q9c (which I also have on another line) except made by HTC with a 2mp camera. Not even close to the touch or mogul I also have so I will not even bother to compare it to either, but rather to it's closest match that I have experience with. I have pics of all these phones together, but no clue how to get them on here.
Keypad buttons seem a little wobbly but easy to use even for my big paws. Still playing with it trying to see if I like it or not. It feels better in my hand then the q9c and better suited to right handed use. Camera is alright, but no flash. Everything is pretty easy to find, especially if you are q9c friendly. Has MS Office instead of Documents to Go, but I can't seem to open word on it's own without a file already there to open. MicroSD card is protected under battery cover, which is kinda nice if it included a card that is. Includes 3 games Bubble Breaker, Solitaire and Wheel of Fortune. Also here is a quick list of included gadgets/software read from the bottom up on my phone:
YouTube
Voice Recorder
Video Recorder
Streaming Media
Sprint TV (Speaker is very loud though tinny)
Sprint Nav
Speed Dial
Software Store
RSS Hub
Remote Desktop
QuickGPS
NFL Mobile Live
NASCAR
Music
MP3 Trimmer (very nice for custom ringtones)
Messenger (Live) redundant?
Live Search
Instant Messaging (AIM, Live, Yahoo)
Inner Circle
HTC Mobile Guide
Google (not compatible with gmail mobile which makes me think no java support)
File Explorer
Comm Manager (Airplane Mode, Phone, Bluetooth, MS Direct Push, Data Connection) no wifi
Clock & Alarm
Camera (pretty nice and can send via email right from app)
Bluetooth Explorer
Audio Booster
Album
Adobe Reader LE
Internet Sharing
Accessories
Getting Started
Pictures & Videos
Voice Notes
Games
Call History
Windows Live
Voice Command
ActiveSync
Office Mobile
Windows Media
Tasks
Internet Explorer
Settings
Contacts
Calendar
Messaging
Overall, I must say it is much more polished than my q9c and not bad for $149 with new line contract. Too soon to say anything about battery life yet, however it is still running on the initial factory charge and only dropped from 3/4 to 1/2 in 20 hours of being on and mildly used. Data is typical HTC fast and should make it a good pants pocket phone for me instead of jeopardizing my now aging and harder to replace mogul/titan. This is good for me especially since my q9c seems to have forgotten how to shut off it's display of late.
Yes this Phone is very cool
I've got the old T-Mobile Dash (HTC Excalibur) and was wondering if the screen readability in sunlight has been improved?
I've always been upset that I can't seem to read the screen at all when I'm outside and the sun is shining. I've noticed that friends with blackberrys and iPhones don't seem to have the same problem.
