Remove AT&T Bloatware from 6.1 ROM - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Windows Mobile ROM De

I have downloaded the new (semi-official) AT&T 6.1 ROM build 19213. I am trying to strip it down and remove the bloatware to have a clean slate to cook with. I have been unable to successfully extract the OEM and SYS folders from OS.nb. How should I do this, and how do I identify which files correspond to the AT&T garbage?

hey been lookin all day for it, where did u find it ?

You will find the WIKI (look at the top of the forum where you posted this) it is a "sticky" there - is your friend:
I searched the WIKI for you this time and here is the answer to your question:

i have already done this and edited incognitho's 1st post with the OS only download... this is bloat stripped version and OS only. However, this does not include the ATT settings, the only thing ATT it still has is the dialer and comm manager. thats it.

Thanks a lot. I tried to download it earlier today, but kept encountering rapidshare errors. it seems to be working fine now.
Just out of curiosity, could you direct me to anywhere on the forum or wiki with instructions on how to strip bloatware from the ROM. I have been messing around with hypercore and kaiser rom kitchen, but have not been able to extract the OEM folders. It would be nice to know how to do this for future reference.

trial and error, the wiki is what i used... and i have no issues using kaiser kitchen to extract all folders.

Check out my XDA-Live Rom (see my signature)
It is stripped to the bone (only MS Voice Command left in) and UC Compliant.
Plus it is "Kitchen Friendly" which means I preserved the rgu & dsm files so you can rebake it in the Kaiser Kitchen.

god, cant people just asnwer and not say look at the wiki or something..
use the htc rom image editor
or, once youve got the os.nb
get all the nbtools and imgfstools in a folder with os.nb
then open cmd in the folder and type nbsplit -kaiser os.nb [splits os into payload and extra]
then imgfsfromnb os.nb.payload imgfs.bin [extracts imgfs from nb.payload]
then imgfstodump imgfs.bin [dumps imgfs]
this will make a dump folder with the files from your rom. you can delete the stuff you dont want, but it might be hard to work out. this is where you use packagetool to make packages. run package tool from anywhere, click file, open folder. open the dump folder and then click build packages. then you can add oem packages or whatever
then type this
imgfsfromdump imgfs.bin imgfs-new.bin [makes imgfs from dump using old imgfs as a template]
imgfstonb imgfs-new.bin os.nb.payload os-new.nb.payload [rebuilds .nb.payload]
nbmerge -kaiser os-new.nb [rebuilds payload and extra to nb]
then use duttys nbhtool to rebuild it into an nbh
to save all the cmd, just use htc rom image editor, its in developemnt and hacking somewhere. so much easier than this way
[if this is wrong, dont blame me, and use the exact commands i used, because it will save confusion]

or just use the kaiser kitchen and you dont have to memorize all that commands

so true, so so true.. ive only done it a few times and i know them all.. and i had to just learn the kaiser ones tongiht for diamond roms. and i hadnt used nbmerge ever before until just now.
and its all in the tzadio tools readme

fair enough.... its just once theyve asked, to me, it took 5 mins to write that while doing other stuff... so i may as well answer. maybe if mods could close/move/delete threads easier, then there would be way less threads doing this.

in all fairness, i havent cooked since the wizard days, when i had the hermes i decided not to mess with cooking cause its a big pain in the A$$ especially if you decide to publish your work. So now with the kaiser i decided to cook. im certainly not one of the no it all mods, but when i went to learn how to do it i spent a few days with the wiki and doing trial in error. I can definitely say all the info is there.

fair enough. same way i learned really. xip i got help on irc, and still dont get it, but this is all in the readme.

So basically your answer is, to paraphrase: "Kinda like this, but you'll have to go read the wiki or the post on the tools anyway".
Seems then the wiki answer was indeed correct.

Very funny....

Ok I figured it out finally
Ok so do a hard reset... when it loads up. align your screen and all that stuff but make sure that you add a password... now here is where you need to be prepared. Get your stylis in the hole before you click to start using your phone. Click the screen and immediatly click the soft reset. Worked for me after hours of hard work.

Wow cheif. Was it really necessary to bump a five month old thread for that? That trick is posted all over XDA.

K, so what if?
I have successfully wiped bloatware from the system before. I understand the hard reset process & then soft reset immeditely prior to the customization BUT...I still can't remove the bloatware. I have tried altering the timing on the soft reset but to no avail.

Magician to 1.13 + 1.13 Radio + BigStorage ALL-IN-ONE Guide

Hi all,
I'm happy to report that I am another sucessful Magician upgrader after reading all the guides on this site, with a 1.13 Magician + Radio + BigStorage ROM chugging away nicely on my O2 XDA II Mini.
Anyway, I decided to help in what way I can and compile a COMPLETE guide on upgrading the Magician to the highest-level ROM at the moment - the 1.13 ROM + 1.13 Radio, BigStoraged! This guide is basically a compilation of ampda's excellent guide, kta's brief 1.13 + 1.13 Radio guide and this thread here that tells of how to BigStorage hack ROMs on the SD card (instead of having to rip the ROM, hack it, and write it back onto the SD). All of these sources are also credited in the actual PDF .
Why this guide? Because all of the above guides, when combined, make for a quicker way to get 1.13 and BigStorage .
Hope someone finds it useful!
EDIT 1st March 2007: Due to the removal of Windows Mobile ROMs of this site (as explained here), the link to the T-Mobile ROM used in this guide no longer works. The removal of said ROMs from this site pretty much outlaws the linking to or distribution of these ROMs, hence I cannot help you find these ROMs either. Sorry . As such, please refrain from posting requests for ROMs on this thread. Do not PM me either asking for ROMs.
For clarity, the BigStorage update gives you a total of 26.72MB in Storage (ROM), with about 1 to 3 MB used up, most likely reserved for the 'Permanent Storage' feature found in Settings (this is not certain). The BigStorage update does not give you more 'Main Memory' (RAM) to use, however you may have more free Main Memory since operator files (eg. IntelliDialer, MMS support) are not automatically installed (as they usually are when your device is first 'Customized' after hard resets).
By the way, the link to the file is located UNDERNEATH THIS LINE. If you don't see a file here, then you're not registered or logged in. You must register and log in to the forum to see any attachments in posts. Please do not PM me about the file not being here unless you have done both of the above! (yep, I've recieved countless PMs on this)
Thanks! Will soon give it a try.
Thank you!
I was also trying to piece it all together through various threads and guides and getting confused by it all.
This guide is exactly what I needed, and it all worked fine.
Glad to help!
EDIT: Nuts, six seconds and I've already found an error Embarassed . Page 2 lists ntrw.exe and romupdate.exe as required, but the link there should be http://members.iinet.net.au/~apmoon/ppc/bs/AM BIG ROM Tools & Files.rar

Hi,
I could eventually manage the bigstorage rom, but no way to change the radio rom.
Your instructions do not mention the possible country error ID (like I'm getting), so I stil got 1.12, and no way to find how to upgrade.
.. no instruction; no tips/hints; no files
Ok, I am a recent m500 (HTC Magician) owner ..

Just rename the file "HTCRuu.dll" to "Ruu.dll", and launch the "NoID" updater.

Thanks for that! And sorry for the comment, which is not at all directed to you, but more like a general impression as I keep coming accross dozens of unanswered quetions all around the forum. It shows actually that the forum is more for true techies, who in turn are not too keen on supporting newbies (with lots of exceptions of course) ;-)
OK the first post has been updated with the tools required for the update, as well as a direct link to the 1.13 ROM and Radio on the FTP.
As for the Radio Country ID error, I admit this is probably an oversight of mine. I initially used MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe with the radio on my Magician only to have it angrily spit out an error 150: incorrect device. Renaming the HTCRUU.dll to RUU.dll gave me the same error! I then ran the original MaUpgradeUt.exe and oddly enough it worked. After doing the same thing with my uncle's Magician, I concluded that the noID thing was not needed for the radio and hence I didn't mention it at all!
So really I don't know what to say about this other than if the country-ID upgrade fails, consult this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=30717
Maybe depending on which original rom. Mine was Orange.
That kinda makes sense I guess. As for the lack-of-replies thingy, I think that could be due to the fact:
1. No one knows the answer
2. Whoever asked the question skimped too much on details or doesn't punctuate their questions or spellcheck\grammarcheck them or... well you get my drift!
3. The question has already been solved, and\or its a question about something impossible. Forum search!
The most irritating thing is that 2. and 3. seem to almost always go hand-in-hand . Granted, I know that it is a bit tough to find the right solution to a problem, but remember that this is a forum, a developer's forum mostly, and an unmoderated one at that! All the information is there, but its everywhere, so be thankful for those willing to spend time to gather it up into something digestible!

Heh yeah I heard that too, but I got away with not using NoID at all! In fact NoID was paining me with code 150 errors instead of the country ID 120 errors, but I hope with this suggestion and also the link above people will be able to figure out the problem.
And also, does having not so many posts on your guide a good thing or not? It could be good because almost no-one has a problem, or it could be bad because no-one uses it . Or I could just be placing too much of my self-esteem on the balance of a forum thread .

Actually, as long as you do not rename HTCRuu.dll to Ruu.dll, the .exe will not even start (because it searches for "Ruu.ddl and can't find it)
Now I got no idea whether there are many versions with different attributes or what.

Hi,
since I've had serious problems after installing o2 active crap, I needed to hard reset the magician.. but I decided this time to proceed with a bigstorage installation!! And the guide u provided is just great I've done bigstorage succesful, and now I have 26,72mb of total memory.. Anyway, is that normal that even if it's empty, it displays 1,12mb of memory in use?? Maybe I should format it..
MANY THANKS!!

Ok, no extended ROM, not like it's wide public knowledge. But how in the hell do we delete unwanted crap? I'd rather not have to do the anti-bloatware reset, I'd like to be able to have full frigin control over my PDA! Anyone?

For "full frigin control", you'll have to learn how to cook your own ROM. Or, you may find that someone will post one here that suits your needs, in time. Other than that, you're stuck resetting during the "customization" process.
Is the statement that there is no Extended ROM on the Kaiser relevant for the Tilt as well or is this related to only the Tytn II HTC ROM? Specifically, during the carrier customization process on the AT&T Tilt, if there is no Extended ROM, where are the customization CABS being called from and how can they be extracted as others have done?

Do a search in \Windows\ for *.cab files and you'll find your answer.
(Total Commander is a great tool for searching your device, among other things)

You can delete them without a problem. They've already been used/installed, so they're just taking up space now.
Hope that helps.
I tried deleting some cab files from my windows directory, but it says unable to delete because they are part of the rom. I'm using at&t rom.

If you hard-reset, everything will be back as usual. I noticed Kyphur's post above mine eluding to not being able to delete the files because a poster's question above him. I was under the impression that changing the attributes of the files and then deleting them would work. But hey, I could very well be wrong.
I, unfortunately, don't have a Kaiser anymore (horrible story, I'll try not to cry thinking about it), so I can't test it out right now. But try using Total Commander or something to change those attributes and delete them. As I said though, once you hard-reset, they WILL be back. Post back if that works.
dammit failed to do it with resco file exp. will try a/s then commander

You download an OEM package set. You find out what you want to get rid off program wise, you highlight everything in that OEM folder. You copy it. You go to the OEMAPPS folder (and every other OEM folder) and you paste it. Say yes to overwrite whatever will be overwritten. Right away, press the delete button on the keyboard. You just deleted every file that belongs to that program.
Ivan, one thing about your roms that has always bothered me is that with my 8gb memory card when I do a soft reset the phone loops between the 2 splash screens untill I remove the card. Is there a way to fix this? Right now I'm running your stripped version of JustMe, however have had the problem all the way back to Just2Clean.

It's not my ROM only, as this happens with a lot of ROMs. At one time or another, I had figured out which software caused the problem but I have forgotten since then. Which packages are you building the ROMs with?

All ROMs made with a Kitchen that uses "all_packages_to_one.exe" like bepe's kitchen will not be decompilable. Besides, you always want to start with a clean slate. Using someone else's ROM without their permission would start issues.
Ok I will try it with the stock rom
Hmmmm.... I think ttran might have the secret for my problem... Flashed Open Touch 6.5 stripped, installed Touchflo2d (audio manager was already cooked in) and no issues with restarting. Now that you two are working togetter..... can't wait to beta test that

But remember that the cooked in version of audiomanger is older then the one that comes with 2D.
Most people are trying to get the audiomanger from the 2D since it looks nicer and etc.

You build the ROM all the way through? (BuildOS, compile, nb->nbh and all?) Then open your ROMBUILD_JustMe folder and transfer the HERAIMG.nbh file into your cell phone's SD card. You have to HardSPL first before using it. Then reset the phone while holding the camera button down and press the down volume and wait until it tells you that it's done.
On a side note: I didn't realize that I had THAT many posts...
thank you so much for all of your help. i ran the bat file now i have no idea what to do. this is the first time i have done this. what is the next file i have to run? how do i compile it? what spl do you recommend?
You HAVE to HardSPL. As far as what to do, follow the bat file. It's a script. Just follow the steps that are on the screen.
i have no idea what was going on with it but i ran the bat file and it crapped out about halfway though before my nbh file was built. but then it all of a sudden started to work. i just finnished hard spl on my device no i am coppying the 4 files in the storage card
4 files? shouldn't there be only one?
sorry my post got cut off but thank you so much it works very well. i kinda wish the wing had more ram but the rom is not going to change that. i only had to install 2 things that you did not have. windows live for hotmail and a good battery meter. thanks again for all of your help
More RAM? How much are you getting? (The phone only has 64mb so with having Windows Mobile running, you can only get so much free.)
my phone says total 43.78 and with just windows running i have 12.42 free what about you?

[Holly's Kitchen - Wing Development] - My parting gift to the Wing/Herald Community

Well, my beloved Wing kicked the bucket last night, and I am without a phone. Before it died I had managed to finish up my Wing development environment which contained a stripped down (meticulously stripped by me) version of the official T-Mobile Wing OEM and a 21051 sys/xip.
This Kitchen is based on the "JustMe" Kitchen by ivanmmj (Thanks Ivan!!) - with all of the bugs fixed. It supports XPR and LZX compression and has a built in configuration section.
To use the kitchen, unzip the files to your hard drive and run the file "StartKitchen.bat". You will be presented with the choice of setting configuration options or building your ROM.
BY default, the Kitchen will output a very basic ROM with a full version of WM 6.1 21051/21051. The only things left from the original T-Mobile OEM are HTC camera, ArcSoft MMS, and other little HTC system utilities like "clearstorage". The only things added to the OEM are HTC Task Manager 2.1, a 6 button Green comm manager that matches the Default Green Windows mobile 6.1 theme, a couple of essential reg tweaks, and Dummy SQM.
I would post screen shots of the ROM, but I was not able to take any before my phone crapped out.
Step-by-Step Guide to Cooking with Holly's Kitchen
If you have Windows Vista or Windows 7, UAC will cause this kitchen to break. Disable it before running the kitchen.
Extract the archive to one of your hard drives - preferably in the root like "c:\"
Browse to the root of the kitchen (EXAMPLE: c:\hollyskitchen) and launch the file called "StartKitchen.bat"
Press "2" and hit [ENTER] to start the build
A program called BuildOS will appear. Press the > button near the top left.
Watch the progress at the bottom of the window. When BuildOS finishes, close it.
The build will continue automatically. If you are using LZX compression, hex editor program will automatically open and close.
The page pool changer application will open. Click on the select button, and browse to the BUILD folder of the kitchen (EXAMPLE: c:\hollyskitchen\working_folder\build\) and select the file "os.nb"
Select the page pool size you want and click on the "Change To" button. Close the page pool changer application.
The HTC ROM tool will be launched. The configuration should already be populated. Click on the "Build!" button.
Browse to the BUILD directory (EXAMPLE: c:\hollyskitchen\working_folder\build), choose a file name for your ROM and click on "Save"
Close the HTC ROM tool
The script then automatically copies your nbh file from the BUILD directory to the flash (EXAMPLE: c:\hollyskitchen\working_folder\flash) directory.
You will be asked if you want to flash your ROM. If you answer "y" and your ROM was successfully copied to the flash directory, you should be ready to flash your newly built ROM.
Now that you have successfully operated the kitchen, you can go back and edit the OEM directory (EXAMPLE: c:\hollyskitchen\working_folder\OEM) and and remove applications to your ROM.
Good luck!

I'm gonna look at this, see if I can learn how to work it. Sounds interesting.

MegaUpload is super-slowwww and just generally sucksss
Too bad SkyDrive is limited to 50 MB. This is just too slow...1 hour...25 KB/s....terrible...hopefully the kitchen is better!

It should have that filled in automatically.
Choose "Herald*"
You can also try to open the project file, which should fill in everything for you. To do that click on the little "l" buton near the bottom, browse to the build folder under (hollyskitchen\working_folder\) and choose the file called "build.htcrtproj".
Here is a screenshot of what the settings should be...

I extracted my kitchen to a computer that has not run the kitchen before and the HTC ROM tool worked fine. I'm not sure how you got that error.
Anyway, I edited the first post with a step-by-step guide. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Yay, a good guide. I'll try it out again. I think it's working right now though...It's on the white screen, saying, "Building NBH". Been there for a while.
I don't get the Herald option as a device. Only the ARTE1000.
?????ahhhhh??????

That's the part where the HTC ROM to launches. Look for it in your task bar. You have to press the build button - Step 9 of the guide.

Something is horribly wrong. Maybe it didn't extract fully?
Let me download the kitchen and check it out.
double comment. I forgot that there was a second page. I was thinking...where's my comment? so I posted this one, and then I saw my other one. Sorry. So, any update on fixing it? I re-downloaded it once and then a second time. Both times had the issue.

YAYYYYYY That means I'm not retarted!! Yesssssssssss.
More details....
When it's about to launch the ROM Builder...
And then after clicking OK...
And finally, after clicking OK to that one, and selecting ARTE1000 as the device...
And it just fails in general after that. Those were the main highlights of it all. Hope it helps. Keep us posted about getting it fixed!
Ohhhhh. You guys are using Vista?
Try turning off user access control. (UAC).
Instructions.

Win7, yea. I tried XP compatibility mode, but didn't do anything. Thought about running in Admin mode, that might do the same thing. If that fails, I'll turn off the UAC.

OK, it worked. Now I'll get a virus, but whatever.

Which folder?
