I've just converted to Linux (Ubuntu) and my Qtek S200 is due to this a bit "off limits" now as far as syncing and such goes.
There ought to be a bunch of *nix-users here with knowledge of how to a) sync in Linux, b) Manage PIM (mainly file transfer for programs, photos etc), c) both.
What's the prefered method? To use wine to run Active Sync (will it work?) or use another program designed for *nix?
As far as I know, there is no software available to sync your WM5 device with your Linux box. My workaround was to set up an Exchange account with 4.smartphone.net as that allows me to not only synchronise PIM with Outook, but with Evolution as well (using the Exchange plugin). Not a very tidy solution I know, but it was the best I could come up with!

WM5 sync with Evolution
Hello,
I'm looking for solution to sync my Artemis with Ubuntu, actually since I've used WM5 there was no problem, I've used synce and synce-multisync plugin to sync my PDA with Evolution and Google Calendar, Unfortunately this workaround does not work for WM6 devices, so since I've updated my os version the sync does not work any more.
I know that it is still possible to use Exchange server , but I don't want to use that method, so if there is some USB sync method available for WM6 devices I'll be very happy to be informed . For all other users with WM5 - use Synce it works fine.
Regards,
JazzyMC
P.S. Sorry for my English

It is possible under Linux with the project called SynCE (http://www.synce.org). Earlier this month a new release (0.11) introduced good support for wm5/wm6. Currently we are trying to package it for the major distributions ( IIRC we already have packages for Fedora Rawhide, people are working on Debian/Unbuntu packages and we have someone working on opensuse packages).
Furthermore, for people that have KDE running and/or have Qt4 running, i have been working on a small program that builds ontop of the SynCE components to provide a Manager application for your WM5/WM6 phone. The name is SynCE-KPM and screenshots/progress can be found on my homepage (http://www.guidodiepen.nl).
It is written in Python and it makes use of PyQt4.
It will display notifications when you (un)plug a phone, it gives you some general information about the phone. It also allows you to install CAB files to the phone and uninstall any installed program. Finally, it also presents a GUI for the partnership management.
NOTE: One function of ActiveSync that SynCE-KPM will not do is syncing, that is done via other programs.
There is also support for syncing your phone to your PIM application. For this the opensync library is used to do the actual syncing. The opensync library has plugins for both evolution as well as kontact. One project within the SynCE (sync-engine) is a project that talks 'ActiveSync' to the phone and transforms the data from this to something opensync understands. Vice versa, after the syncing is actually done by the opensync lib, it sends data back to sync-engine, which in turn will communicate this back to the phone via 'ActiveSync' talk.
For more information, please visit www.synce.org
I managed to sync my HTC Diamond with Evolution, the only problem is that only the "Personal"-Calendar in Evolution is recognized for syncing, no other calendars (or even the birthday-events!!!) are used.
Does anyone know a workaround for this behaviour?
hi guys, just a quick and simple question.....
in windows vista, if i sync up and sync all contacts, where does it store this info, in xp it saved these contacts to my outlook, but on vista, alli have is windows mail and there are no contacts in there, i cannot seem to find them anywhere and need to know this works before loosing all my contacts with an upgrade.
i actually posted this somewhere else, i think it was the wrong forum, so added another here...
This forum is mainly for running Windows Mobile 6 on the HTC Universal.
However, here is how I understand it: If you don't run Outlook on your Vista machine, you can't sync your contacts or calendar... and that is REALLY stupid since Vista HAS a Calendar built-in!
For contacts, check in the 'Contacts' folder under your Username (click Start -> (username) and then Contacts. If it's not there, I don't know where it goes. I bought Outlook.
checked that, windows mail, no contacts, windows contacts, no joy, i even had a copy of microsoft office 2007 running the other day and still didnt work.
has anyone got any contacts synced up with vista??
I used to have Vista running with Office 2007 and it synced ok to Office, but after a couple of syncs it stopped recognising the device. After a lot of playing around, I came to the conclusion that Vista sucks the proverbial ass and is not really ready for release yet, so I downgraded again to XP.
My flatmate has stuck with Vista and is having the same problems on his Wizard. I do think it's a problem with Vista more than WMDC or the phone. Vista's 'Security' features render it pretty unstable at accepting communication with most devices as nearly no drivers are at WHQL level yet, even the inbuilt M$ drivers. (That's purely my own opinion, thousands disagree with me!).
Sorry I can't be more help.

no worries fella, any information is good, i must admit vista has its good points, but fails on many needed values, especially when connecting devices with there own software.
unfortunatly, i had no choice in the matter of getting vista, my old laptop died and i couldnt get hold of a new one fast enough that still had xp installed. i didnt even get a backup copy of vista to downgrade then upgrade at a later date. oh well.
i heard about people using a virtual machine to run RUU for upgrading devices, i might give this a go... its a pain in the arse, but i really dont want to loose all my contacts....
My Universal seems to be syncing with Office 2k7 just fine. I haven't tried in a couple of days, but I'll give it a shot tonight just to make sure everything is working okay. I'm even running as a non-administrator.
Once you have Office installed you just need to make sure that the boxes are checked in mobile device manager. Have you installed the device manager update? (links towards the bottom of the page). That might help a bit.
i was running Vista since it RTMed and i have had no problems syncing Universal with WMDC, even when it was in Beta stage. Now with fully updated WMDC and Office 2007 Pro i cant see any better partnership for my device. everything syncs just perfectly. And i will never go back to Active Sync or XP for that matter. Vista, Office2007, WMDC are soooooooo much better.
I AM LOVING IT....
its all sorted now, thanks for your help guys.
i just reinstalled office 07 and repaired device as a new device, ticked contacts and it worked.
woohoo
Syncing with Wondows Calendar/Contacts
Right, I've got Vista on my new laptop but have no intention in acuiring Outlook 2007 for it (at the moment I'm running Office Home and Student 2007 - no Outlook any more, just Onenote, don't get me wrong I love Onenote!) I was just planning on using Windows Live Desktop Mail and Windows Contacts on my laptop as I have a desktop running the full Office Auite. However, I would like my hpone to be able to sync contacts and calendar onto my laptop.
Does anyone know of a 3rd party app which allows for WMDC to sync with the built in Calendar and Contacts within Vista?
Currently my Desktop in running Office 2003 and Active Sync 4.1 on a XP Home SP2 OS.
My laptop is running Office 2007 and WMDC on Vista Home Premium.
My phone is a T-Mobile Vario II running WM5. I'd love to upgrade to WM6 but I'm a bit worried to use a home brew as I don't really know what I'm doing when it comes to switching. I just wish T-Mobile would support the Vario II the same as the have done the Dash!
Any suggestions for keeping all my contacts and calendar up to date across all three devices?
So I finally decided I am totally fed up with Windows and decided to make my PC no longer a duel-boot machine and just have Linux running on it. Anyways was wondering if anyone has had any success with syncing there PPC in Linux, and how?
I seeked much for this but finally I create my own method (with small USB Bluetooth device)for syncing between my Suse 10.0 and WM5 with bluetooth.
Read my article here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=359134
Other methods:
http://www.synce.org/
I switched to Linux as well..
I'm running Win2000 (lightened version) inside VirtualBox for syncing my work's Outlook calendar and mail.
My personal calendar is synced using OGGSync (GoogleCal).
http://virtualbox.org
http://oggsync.com
Finch Sync is also an option. I have been using it and so far really enjoy it. See my post here for details. It works with the Mozilla suite via http. Hope this helps.
Hi friends,
Let me put these questions as simple as it can be -
1. is it possible for android to synchronize with the desktop computer
running Win XP?, if yes how? Wm phones can do it seamlessly using
MSActivesync.
2. is it possible to use the desktop's internet connection and browse
the web from the android? (just like WM-phones do with MS Activesync)
3. Is there a way to import all the Windows mobile contacts onto the
Android phone? NOT from google mail-account because I have different
contacts in my phone and gmail. And I would like to import my Phone
contacts onto Android.
THANKS to anyone who answers all/part of the queries.

1. Hopefully google would release a cloud based or an application that allows this, as it would make some lives a little easier.
2. I do not believe there is an app capable of this but it may be possible via bluetooth or use the desktop as an AP. Either way, i don't think you will get any better than you would off of wifi.
3. I found this off a quick search http://www.myhtcphone.com/import-contacts. Dont know if it works or not, but it seems to be like what you want.
1. use google calendar sync.
2. use adb port forwarding with proxy or vpn.
3. export your outlook contacts as csv and import them in gmail.
Not Really!

Google calender sync is at it says "for your calender only". No contacts. No idea why they can't just add it. Our lives would be so much easier.
I've had a friend report to me that Google has licensed the ActiveSync technology, so it may be added in a future build of the Android OS.
I believe that the "Hero" version that Haykuro is toying with currently also showed ActiveSync in one of the menus, but I can't vouch for that at the moment.
Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later.

It's not ActiveSync, that's Microsoft's product. The new Hero build (as well as the stock Magic ROM) have a program called HTC Sync. I don't believe anyone has obtained a copy of the desktop software for that though.
it's two separate things.
google licensed activesync to allow ms exchange clients to sync with google calendar and gmail contacts (see http://www.google.com/mobile/winmo/sync.html). you already have this on android.
the ms exchange option appeared in the mail app can only connect to ms exchange servers (not your desktop activesync clients) and can do email only.
htc sync is the only possiblility. (m$ won't be stupid enough to allow you to use activesync on any other platform.)
Your ideas of sync are outdated on Android.
My phone address book syncs to my gmail account, and my email clients address book syncs to gmail. My phone calander syncs to Google Cal, and I find the web based interface to work just fine. But I am sure you can find something to sync whatever your cal program is to google.
All this syncing happens when the phone is in my pocket and is always up to date.
As for browsing the web from the phone, over the usb connector, why? The phone has 3G and wifi.
You can import your contacts as a group into gmail, then set the phone to only display contacts from that group.

as everyone else is surely noticing .. google syncs better than the mickeysoft mousesync stuff other people use .. you are automatically synced to the google server and from there you can do anything .. i pull my calendar into outlook or anything else i want .. so .. what was the question again?!?
If you have no 'net connex, 'the cloud' does 2 things: jack & shizzle.
I do, however, wish I could keep my contacts synced with GMail (after my initial .cvs port-over). GCalSync works very well, though!

That's great, but I don't want to be beholden to a corporation, especially not to a single corp using closed protocols. If kinda defeats the purpose of having an open source phone for some of us. A mechanism to sync to my home server (not desktop), would certainly be welcomed.

Ever heard of wireline? I guess you can't conceive of being in an environment without wifi or 3G, they do exist you know? Not to mention that it would be nice to not always have to broadcast everything you do into the ether.
Thanks to everyone who responded

Yes, many of the suggestions sounds good for me. I am guessing many of you r not on Windows anymore. My problem is there, I am still on Windows just becoz I play lot of games, install a lots of programs which are only possible on win-ground. I do streaming - didnt find lot of freedom in this area on other OSs.
btw, I will apply your ideas considering them expert opinions becoz OI am just a noob in such things.

Oh, you're not tied to Google. Android is made so that each of its apps can be replaced by a user-made app (of course, as with the lock screen, that's still in the process of being completed). There's a few calendar applications in the market that can do the same thing that the Google Calendar can. Or you could code your own/hire someone to do so.
I don't get G3. And Wifi is only at home. I am in Edge or GPRS most of the time. I was in GPRS when I typed that message. Syncing works just fine.
I can understand not wanting to trust your data to Google. Apps can read and write to the address book and cal. All somebody needs to do is make an on-line sync app.
After years of living with having to sync my palm, the "cloud" syncing Google provides is the next slice bread. But I do backup my phone, just in case.
I still don't see why you want to browse the web on your phone, wired to your laptop. Just use the laptop then. Or create an ad-hoc connection with ICS and do that over wireless.(Not tried it, but I assume it will work.)

When it starts working for the Android, you could use Funambol (http://www.funambol.com/) on your PC and get both a cloud sync (if you so choose) and a desktop sync. I used to use it to sync my SE P990.
The last time I checked, it wasn't working, but maybe it's fixed now.

I can't speak for the original poster, but I often want to download stuff to my phone, apps, data, ... This is not surfing so to speak, but it still requires a connection. Sometimes wireless is not available for this.

Yes, thanks, I am familiar with that project. Unfortunately I refuse to run a 500MB RAM gorilla (I tried it, it really does use 500MB) on my home server (I run at least 10 virtual servers on my one PC) just to provide a sync framework for one phone. I will not sacrifice that much from the other real server applications that I use. Funambol is really not a good (sane) solution for individuals. I will be investigating the syncevolution framework soon.
Wanted to share a recent discovery for syncing Andriod and Outlook (I am using 2007). Up until now I have been very disappointed in the various sync options for someone like me who is on a corporate network using Outlook and who has an IT group that does NOT allow syncing via cloud for any software that uses MSExchange server Active Sync, like RoadSync and TouchDown.
I have been using HTCSync which is not too, too bad, the big issue is that it messes up my phone #s like my (919) 123-4567 989 (this is the extension) after syncing with HTC was changed be to (919)123-4567989. I also had issues with syncing some Outlook appointments, especially recurring and also issues when a co-worker deleted an recurring appointment, it would not always allow me to delete this from my calendar. Bottom line...lots of weird stuff using HTCSync, but until now the only real USB sync option.
Add to this, I do prefer a USB sync option, yep USB and MOSTLY doing so w/o having to load a special software on my Andriod phone like Markspace or The Missing Sync or Companion Link require. I only want to use the integrated Andriod calendar and contacts programs NOT something special.
With all of the background, I strongly encourage anyone with similar needs, especially a USB sync option, please check out Andriod-Sync at this link
http://www.android-sync.com/
Amazingly, the cost is $0.00.
Also, if you want to see the various sync options check out this link
http://www.syncdroid.net/
Hope this is helpful for the XDA corporate guys that use Outlook, came from WM6.5 to Andriod 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 and have been looking for a good USB and non IT controlled sync option.

It is syncing....will keep you posted when done
Thank you!!!!!!!! This should be a sticky!!!
Awesome app, thanks for the link

I too have been struggling for MONTHS trying to find solutions to the Outlook/Android sync or the Thunderbird/Lightning and Android sync issues.
My biggest struggle is actually the task manager. I use Outlook Tasks, interconnected with events, contacts and emails extensively to track major projects, etc. I still can't find a reasonable and truly functional option.
If anyone out there finds something...let us know!!!

I have a AT&T Fuze (Winmobile 6.5/Energy) that I use with MS Mobile Device Center as a bridge between Outlook on my MS Exchange Server at Work and Outlook 2007 on my Windows 7 laptop & desktop at home. The system works like a top. Lately the display seems a little small however. I've been looking at an HTC Thunderbolt (Android) with the HTC sync application and several after market sync applications. Windows Phone 7 is off the table because of a decision by Microsoft not to sync with it's own product, Outlook. Is there an Android app that is a clone or better of Windows Mobile Device Center? Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks
As for a clone to windows device thinga ma bob?

Re Android vs. WIN7?
I switched from a Pure Energy ROM to my At&T Aria, and now a HTC Desire Z with Android GB 2.3.3, never thought I would like Android like I do, bit man oh man, way nicer than WinMo.
Thanks for your help!

Hi -- I am looking for a one-way sync, Outlook 2010 x86 to Android. Do Android-Sync and MyPhoneExplorer support this?
