Bricked GPS. - General Topics

I know this isn't quite the right forum to post stuff about gps navigation systems, but since we have some pretty good embedded systems engineers here i thought i would give it a try.
following problem:
i friend gave me a _really_ no name navigation system (PND) which he bricked because he edited things in the wince registry and accidently made something (don't ask me what) that made the PND crash. since then there is no lifesign of the pnd anymore. When i plug in the device, windows detects an "unknown device" and a red led is on on the device. thats all. There is nothing on the screen. Since the pnd has only two buttons (power and reset) there was not much i could try. i tried "hardresetting" it like i used to do on some htc devices (power and reset at the same time, different intervalls etc.) nothing worked out. i know that if this device would be not such a noname sh*t, it would be probably easy to get an wince image and flash the device via sd card. but since my friend gave me this device for free, i thought i'll try everything i can to get it running again. because the fact that he messed with the os made the pna a brick, a hardware failure can't be it.
some of the things i was wondering:
since it is nevertheless nothing more than just some device with wince, is it possible to somehow access the device to get it up and running again ?
is there a way i can flash the pnd in this state ?
the "red led" reminds me of a bricked qtek 9090 which had the same simptoms. is there maybe some "connection" between this since both are wince devices?
So here is again what i know for sure:
PND gives no lifesigns exept the "red led".
Windows detects an "unknown device".
Battery is fine (opened up pnd, checked voltage, is ok)
PND seems to be a "siemssen 6088" aka "strato 60800" aka somekind of a "malata [unknown model]" aka according to some forums somekind of a navigon devirate.
had wince 5 running.
registry had been messed with, since then dead.
any ideas what can be done?
thanks in advance.

upgrade without usb

Hi,
After a mounth of problem caused by my mini-usb connector, I weld it this morning. But, I cannot sync it by usb anymore. I have to sync it by bluetooth. Anyway do you think there is a possibility to upgrade it with an SD card or another solution?
I thank you.
Hi,
My first thoughts would be..
"how am I going to charge the battery",
pointless pursuing an upgrade in the circumstances?!
STI
I don't see charging being an issue, as he may very well have power even if not data running on his connector, and even if that's not the case, there's plenty standalone battery chargers on ebay. Not the perfect scenario, but grab a second battery if you don't already own one and it's suddenly way better than tossing you uni.
About the SD card ROM loading...
I've seen a few posts on it, but I reckon the SD image is always created by dumping the current loaded ROM.
So, I imagine you'll need someone else so make you an SD image of the ROM you need/want.
As for the actual dumping of the OS, I never did it, so I can't really help you there.
It's not about the uni, but here's this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=899768&postcount=8
Still, as I told you, I believe you'll need a third party to supply you with the ROM dump, and even then, be damn careful that you both have the some devices (i.e. both G3 or both G4) as it probably matters.
Take this as a hint in (what I believe is) the right direction. By no means I can guarantee that this is the only way to go about it.
Best of luck!
I have the same problem with my HTC prophet device...since i upgraded to wm6 , problem came when I activated Wm5torage
I can still charge it with my usb cable but nothing more...I`m looking to download an SD image backup from somebody
If somebody can help ...
I have the same problem, having replaced the socket it also just now charges and shows in windows as an unknown port. I have checked all the connection on the PDA motherboard and everything appears OK when measured with a meter. As windows recognises that there is a port there, it seems likely that the clock and data are available. If this is the case, it should be recognised. I can only assume that somehow the OS has become corrupt. This seems to be quite a common thing, and it would be nice if someone could throw some light on why this happens.
If the clock and data are available, meaning that the two computers can communicate, you should be able to reflash the device, since Bootloader mode circumvents the OS, and the RUU has it's own drivers for communicating with the device, evidenced by the fact that it shuts down ActiveSync to avoid interference.
Try putting the device into bootloader, then initiating a flash. If there's something, anything, wrong with the dataport, the RUU will be unable to flash. If the ROM Upload starts, the it will probably finish too without a hitch. And you'll have a new working Uni.
Also, it is not possible to flash via SD card, since the SD port can only be used with the appropirate drivers loaded, and that's done by the OS. Flashing is done while in bootloader mode, which circumvents all of the OS, and uses a separately stored on board program to access the main ROM, screen and dataport.
It is possible to flash a new Rom via the SD Card.
It does however require another device to dump the image onto the SD Card first.
Search the forum and you will find specific details on the procedure.
I believe Midget made a post about the process not so long ago.
Also could all peeps please keep these sort of issues in the upgrading section, you are more likely to get better answers there.
This forum is meant to be purely for WM6 on the Universal.
Cheers,
Beasty
Yep, here is:

Whoops sorry am getting a little off topic here. Anyway boot load will not work so port is probably faulty. Got a version of WM6 on it anyway, so will use as is.

Activesync of Outlook stopped working

For no apparent reason, Activesync (4.5 5096) of Outlook on my TC (standard ROM see below) has stopped working. Outlook email/contacts/diary not getting synced.
After plugging USB in a message says 'Sync cannot be connected succesfully...try again... and run troubleshooting..'. But Activesync/Help/Troubleshooting/Reporting says there is nothing wrong! Indeed, I can still explore TC and card, sync other software (e.g. Media Player, TomTom Home, eWallet etc).
But I can't get in to the ActiveSync/Options menu to check out the relationship. Have soft reset TC, turned off PC firewalls etc, but nothing helps. Little puzzled because it all worked fine for the past 2 months and I wasn't even playing around when it decided not to work!
Any ideas please?
Thanks,
CI

ROM date: 12/11/07
Radion vers: 1.58.21.23

had the same problem some time ago. changed the cable and everything was fine.you could also try uninstalling and reinstalling activesync.
Jackster
Thanks. Cable was OK, but uninstall/reinstall of activesync worked. indeed speeded up activesync and fixed a lot of other minor secondary problems while it was at it would recommend it for all every now and then. strikes me that activesync is one of the those bolt-on bits of MS obeseware that needs regular maintenance?
USB Device not recognized
To mark the anniversary of me posting my original message, all of a suddden and for no apparent reason, Activesync has stopped working again. Bizarre
This time its a little different, I don't get anything except a pop message on PC saying 'USB device not recognized: One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance click on this message'. Which of course I di and it didn't help!
So, I've tried
- un-installing/re-installing Activesync 4.5
- rebooting PC and TC umpteen times
- changed USB port/cable
- tick/untick Settings/Connections/USB-to-PC/Enable Advanced network functionality
- putting the kettle on
Nothing is working (Although the cup of tea was nice
Would really appreciate some help please
Thanks

Help! Really desperate on this one. I have been trying to think why this should suddenly happen. Two things possible:
- During my last succesful sync I received and answered a call. Would this damage registers or something?
- I accidently pulled the mini-USB headphone cable a bit while listening toi music. But the sound is still perfectly OK, and I receive power charge via USB even though it won't connect/sync. And like I said, I've swapped cables/ports.
I've Googled this a lot and most people fix by fiddling with stuff I have already done and praying!
Please. Anyone got any ideas before I too start praying!
Thanks
1. No, it should not. Never heard it did.
2. AFAIK, not reason as long as it charges trough USB port.
Try to delete device from Active Sync while device is not connected. You might need to restart PC.
You'll have to set options again when device is recognised.
This is what I have to do often.
Also, check device name on device itself, it tends to change from time to time for no apparent reason (at least to me). If it changes, it causes following problems to me:
1. Active Sync troubles
2. BT connection to car audio stops working.
Hope some of this will help...
BTW... you have WM 6.0 on it? If so, don't upgrade to WM 6.1... IMHO, WM 6.0 is faster than 6.1 and has less problems with Active Sync...
Bodisson,
Thanks for suggestions. Alas, none work
It looks like I am going to have to hard reset and/or burn new ROM. For those of us who don't do this regularly, this can be a nerve racking experience. However, I was perhaps sweating too much about it for a couple of reasons:
- it seems very few people have anything good to say about WM6.1. Until now I have been pretty happy with WM6.0 and have had 14 months of virtually trouble-free use, so maybe I'll just stick with that. I'm not a power-user, so the vast array of cooked ROMs is rather bewildering. Unless one is rock solid and aimed at non-power end-users?
- I thought installing a new ROM without Activesync was impossible, but I see someone has worked a way to do it via the SDHC card. Well done XDA
So, unless anyone has some further ideas I will just hard reset to WM6.0 and hope for the best. I have this terrible feeling though that my mini-USB port is damaged and I'll get the same bubble of doom even after hard reset.
Thanks
Either do a hard reset back to factory (and hope you can re sync all your stuff with the PC),
OR
Re flash the rom to C Shekar's "b" rom. It really is very good, and transforms the phone. In fact, it is so good that I have finally stopped fiddling with my phone! (and I'm a born fiddler!)
It is very good, and works immediately, but you might need to spend time tweaking it - the must is to install the correct radio.
I've done quite a lot of rom upgrading, so am quite comfortable now with the process. If you want to do it and need a hand, let me know.
Have you tried to verify your firewall? Last time I had some Sync problems was just after updating my firewall that changed settings to default, blocking the Polaris-PC communication.
Have tried disabling all firewalls with no luck.
I've hit a brick wall on this one, but am fearful it will be hard to get device back to working order again if I do hard-reset and still can't sync
Suggestions very welcome
Thanks

OK, I feel for you on this one!
If you don't want to flash to a new rom (or, re flash to your old one), there is a solution but it involves removing and renaming your Outlook.pst file ... the procedure (which is on this site somewhere) seemed fraught with danger, to me, so i preferred to re flash when i had a similar problem.
Before re flashing, if you decide to, you backup your data using PIMBackup - only your contacts and maybe phone call list, not anything specific to the phone's operating system or software.
Re flash, then restore the data.
Then, Active Sync will see the phone as a completely new system.

I feel like an idiot :(((

I recently (few days ago) bought my S710 (a.k.a. Vox) and it came with the WM5. So I found this forum nad Dr.Gonzo's thread about WM6.1 ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=384129), DL-ed the necessery sofware and followed the instructions (which seem to me like a peace of cake )
For some unknown reason I cannot finish the flashing of WM6.1, when I have to run the RUU I start the instalation, and after a minute or so (when the progress meter appears) the software says that the device is not connected. I tried this several times, always with the same problem.
what am I doing wrong? Please help me, so I don't feel like described in the subject of this thread.
P.S. and sorry if I made any gramatical errors, english is not my native language.

you should firstly uspl your htc s710!(first treath) do do this its necesary that you app unlock your vox(as described in uspl treath) then you can update to any rom!(made for your device!)
...let me explain...
Like in the manual, first I rebooted (hardware reset) the device, then run SDA application unlock, soft reset, copied the necessery files to the root directory, run heret.exe through the .bat file.
the penguin appears on the screen for a short time, then the screen goes dim (like described). this is the moment I should start RUU, which I do, but one of 2 things happen:
1) either the RUU doesn't even recognize the device, and reports to check USB cable. The screen remains dimmed,
2) or it recognizes it, shows the USPL-vox on the device and starts update. At the very begining of update (zero or two %), it says that the device is not connected. the vox screen shows some info, and it's three-colored - blue, green, red (if I remember correctly). the RUU software exits, and then I hardware reser the device, to make it functional, but still with WM5.
what am I doing wrong?
EDIT: It's actually WM6, I needed a program to tell me that
Seems like your USB port on the PC is not working properly with the Vox. Try another Port or better an other PC to execute these tasks.
Could also be the cable - this may be easier to change.
I don't think that is possible, it's the same cable I use for connecting through ActiveSync and it works flawslessly. Any other ideas?
it's a standard USB-miniUSB cable I use for my old motorola mpx200 and my camera, don't beleive there can be a problem there?
Just try it - AS transfers a few bytes - a ROM is several MB. This is no proof.
Windows (ROM Update) also talks to the USB port in a different way than AS, so why not eliminating all parts that are outside the device (you have no other choice anyway).
- new/other USB cable
- new/other USB port
- new/other USB controler (e.g. other PC)
Can you not upgrade new rom from htc site?

Bad ROM - various settings not responding and no PC connection

I just traded my X1 for an x7510, but find many of the settings not reacting at all. It's apparently running a version of 6.5
USB to PC does nothing when clicked, along with various other settings such as Device Information and Format Microdrive.
I can't connect to my PC, so I can't even begin to sync or think about updating the ROM to something that might work again.
Does anyone have any useful tips how I could get this thing working again?
Go into bootloader, its camera button and reset. And it will work. Thats the whole points of a hard-spl...Make sure you have the correct drivers in windows.
...
Well, that's such an obvious solution I rightfully feel like a n00b now.
Thanks.
