Hi all,
i was cleaning the keypad, home key was stuck and i broke the ribbon cable. long story short, i need to remove the mainboard. i did find a post on Modaco on how to open the sp5 but its not working for my case for some reason.
I actually have managed to open the whole case and see the whole mainboard + exposed lcd but it looks like the mainboard is jammed from one end (base of sim slot/keypad ribbon cable). i dont see any plastic latches, dont see any screws but something is holding onto the mainboard. dont want to pry it too hard, it might rip the base or the mainboard.
Any suggestions?

I'm surprised you got it open enough to even start asking about the removing the mainboard if you hadn't gottent the warranty void screw.
BTW:
Warranty's now screwed.
LoL...dont care about warranty since the phone is now over 2 yrs old anyway.
And i had my baby lessons from the modaco forums..
ok that T5 screw is jammed stuck and looks like its gots its sides rubbed out from previous times (it was repaired under warranty so those techs mustve messed up the screw). philips flathead and t5 torx is not working, any other options?

The techs who stripped the head probably used lock-tight.
If nothing else has worked (because of lock-tight), then my wildy stupid and dangerous idea would be to break a small guage drill bit (not driver bit), file off the rough edges and place in the drill chuck backwards. Drilling a hole in revers should spin the screw out. Or allow a different driver to fit.
I wouldn't actually recommend this....
my keypad is not working properly(not the querty-but the main).can i repair it my self because my nearest service centre is about 500 km away from me.i tried to remuve the cover but couldnt.i used tonclean my keypad circuite board in my previous phone from lg by removing the cover if there is aproblem with it(usually from dust or water particle.pls help me othervice it would be thrown out.
thanks in advance
if it is a dust problem you can find the vox disassembly guide here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/81900499/VOX_SM_A01__GENERIC.pdf.html
instructions for taking it apart start at page 26 and you only really need a phillips head screwdriver kit to get it all apart.
Just as a side note remember the warranty will be void if you take it apart yourself.
thank you.i wil try and reply you
maybe with an air compressor? but not too much pressure
EDIT 2011 08 13: Skip to the post where I'm working on a guide.
Also:
EDIT 2011 08 13: I have since ordered a Black Battery Cover to match it. However, I still can't find a Black "8.0 Xenon" label and a Black little rubber from the top left.

Background info:
Ok, so my XT720 is really beat up right now, and I'm looking into replacing the whole housing of my phone.
I bought these:
Front and back housing
Battery cover
(Yes, so the back housing is black and the battery cover is blue, I plan on vinyl dying it)
But I haven't been able to find any guide on disassembly and assembly...
Has anyone tried?
Hmm, you may run into some issues, that is for the xt701 which as far as I know has no HDMI out.
So the housing probably will not either

I checked just now, it actually does have the HDMI out port.
The XT701 case will not fit the XT720. I read somewhere else, someone ordered this and tried. Will not fit. No HDMI port on the 701 and the USB port is on the other side up by the power button.
Why not use the correct case? http://cnn.cn/shop/motorola-milestone-xt720-housing-p-10055.html
dude,
the phone is made of really strong casing. I'm wondering how did u do it to be beaten up.
I think no one has gone thus far till taking the phone apart. Just my two cents here, beware that the body has 6 screws, 2 totally hidden and 2 partially hidden.
the top two screws are hidden under the rubber bud beside the camera lens and under "8.0 Xenon" label.
the middle row of 2 screws are visible just above the battery.
the bottom row of screws are partially hidden underneath the loud-speaker grills. The grill might be damage in the process of removing these screws. but since you're replacing the whole housing, it won't be a problem for you.

Can you link me to that source?
Because the housing I got has an HDMI port on the other side of the power button, and the USB port is on the left side of the phone, just like my current housing.

Firstly, thanks for the heads up about the screw locations!
I carry my phone in my keys pocket, and it banged up the chrome bezel a lot... After I swap it I'll put it in another pocket.
The grill actually doesn't come with the replacement housing, so thanks for the warning about potentially damaging it!
Ok so I finally decided to try putting on that XT701 casing on my XT720.
==== Step 1
I used a T5 screwdriver. And as explained, there's 6 screws:
- 2 of them are openly accessible after you take off the battery cover.
- 2 of them are under the speaker grill - simply run your fingers under it to pry it out
- 2 of them are at the top:
1 under the "8.0 Xenon" label - use a push pin and run it along the edge to pry it open
1 under the top left tiny rubber cover - again, use a push pin, dig into it and pry it out
==== Step 2
Run your fingers along the egde of the blue plastic (where the blue and silver meet) and dig your fingers in to unhook the mechanism. The blue back cover should come right off after you run your fingers around the contour 1-3 times.
==== Step 3
Here's where I'm stuck. I'm trying to separate the electronics from the front silver part. There's some screws that I believe attach the screen to the front cover. But those screws are even smaller and my T5 did not work on them. I just ordered a set of T4 and T3 screwdrivers from China. So I'll get back to this in maybe 3-4 weeks.
Wow, black looks sexy. Post some pictures when youre done.
You got as far as I did

Dude, you got as far as I did... I got the smaller torx bits & started my attempt to separte the electronics from the face plate... found my fingers were too large to manipulate & figured I'd do more harm than good... I still have the replacement housing... phunny thing, a few months after giving up, my 3g radio stopped working.. Cinci Bell tech couldn't fix (go figure!)... so I ended up buying the phone insurance for 6 bucks a month & got a free replacement.... Housing fixed! Bouyaaah!... If anyone wants the housing I have, you pay shipping & I'll send it to you... it is missing the USB door (i used it on my old XT720). Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
does anybody know how to disassemble a spv c600 since i want to replace a cover
Look up the web for similar device disassembly (Qtek 8200 has a simliar housing). Basically they are all made the same. Rough sequence is:
remove battery cover
loosen all visible screws (2 at the bottom + 2 under the battery, 1 of them is under the warranty sticker) - you need Torx T6
Flip up the antenna/Cover. This depends on the device-type how it is locked, but you must for any device start lifting at the bottom/back side - you will not succeed on the topside. For some (SDA-USA) you have to lift the sides from the device- for others (O2 XDA Phone, Qtek 8200) there are little holes in the frame part towards the battery. You must lift the locks at the right place. If you take a very small flat screwdriver, just insert carfeully (about 1 cm) and lift up - using the screw driver as a lever. Once both sides are up, you can lift it completely and remove it.
2 more screws are on top of the device - remove them.
insert a credit card or something alike between frame and top cover, usually at the side buttons it is the easiest. Don't insert that too deep (1-2mm) and slide it along the side until all locks are open. Be careful at the bottom right side (looking on the face) as there goes the keyboard cable - don't hurt that!
Once cover is loose, start flipping away from the topside until a gap of about 8 mm (keep the bottom where it is). Peek inside from the top:
You see a flat connector from the camera to the PBA. Flip it up with a screwdriver.
Separate Frontside (it has the LCD and PBA connected) and frame (with camera) carefully. Take care at bottom of the device as the connectors on the PBA are inserted in the frame.
Done
Rest is easy as there is nothing hidden. For Keyboard removal you need a small PH00 cross screwdriver.

Hi guys,
I have seen this mod done on various devices. For those who haven't heard of it, just google wireless charging mod and you will be flooded with links.
I am very sorry for the links in the quotes, but I haven't reached the 10 posts which are required to post links, so I will come back sometime and fix it, or if some mod can do it, I would be really glad.

So if you are okay with the above-mentioned, let's get started.
This mod is an easy one, you just need 5 things :
1. Wireless charging cover from Palm Pre or Palm Pixi
2. Palm Touchstone wireless dock station
3. Copper foil (can be bought from ebay or from your local stationery)
4. soldering iron, preferably with fine tip, but if you have some experience, you can get away with regular sized one
5. Galaxy S Advance (obviously )
Not required, but having a magnifying glass and an exacto knife can really help, because you can scratch off some of the blue solder mask, making your soldering area bigger, hence making the mod easier.
From what I've read on the S3 parts of xda, this mod should be possible also on the I9070P, without disabling or interfering with NFC.
I have put the wireless receiver under the silicone case, but you can put it under the back cover if you buy the Pixi one, I have bought this big monstrosity and gone around it this way.
Instructions
0. Turn off your phone.
1. Disassemble the phone
You just have to take out 6 screws from under the back cover and then with a pick or something flat pry the assembly from the housing.
Here is the link for the disassembly video

2. Solder 2 thin stripes of copper foil to the highlighted areas, the 5V one is a bigger square on the left of the microUSB port (which was the biggest bugger because all pinouts on the web show, that these squares are just supporting the connector on the PCB), and for the ground one, basically anything that's made out of metal should be grounded, I have soldered it directly to the side of the microUSB port, but I have seen one guy use the microSD card socket, so whatever you like .

3. Drag the foil under the battery to the outside of the phone.
4. Rip off the receiver module from the cover. Be sure that you don't forget any part, I was going nuts until I figured out, that I forgot the aluminium part of the module on the old cover.
5. Figure out, which terminal on the module is + and -, on mine, the top one was negative and the bottom one was positive, find someone with a multimeter or use some bulb or an LED to figure out the polarity, you can never be 100% sure.
6. Solder thicker pieces of copper foil to the + and - terminals of the receiver.
7. Align the foil from the phone with the foil from the module, + to +, - to -.
8. Enjoy your mod
