Well.
I've been thinking of this PDA.
I have my birthday soon and im 16 then, and i decided i want a PDA.
I need a pda mainly for gaming, app testing and game testing, playing around and stuff. Like trying COD2, and stuff.
Ive been asking at other forums and have come to the conclusion that the options are, XDA Flame, and iMate x150.
There are 2 problems though.
The imate only has a 2.4(2.8) inch screen where the Flame has a 3.6" screen.
My only concern is the OS, the flame only has a WM5.
Id want to know how much the WM6 costs.
And what you think.
Any kind of suggestions are welcome.
windows mobile unlike normal windows is not something one can buy
it have to be 100% made for a device to work
unly the maker of the pda can really release a rom for the device
and can charge or give for free it's up to them ms dont have any enduser contact when
it comes to wm
but so far i dont know of any application which only works on wm6 or wm6.1 and not wm5
Whats the difference anyway?

For gaming, get a second-hand x51v. Don't bother with the buggy Flame. Also see my Flame-related posts
i have a flame and a x50v and if you want something for gaming then get a axim x50v or a x51v both are the best devices ever made. just make sure you get the ones with a "v" they are the ones with vga and the intel 2400 chip
the flame has a nvidia chip but little support for this chip from games.
thats why i carry both the flame and the x50v one for phone and one for gaming/vids/music
i just bought the flame because the big screen and vga...i also had extra cash so thats why
XDA FLAME
May I know how to alter the sms ringtone in O2 flame....I've been trying lots to find ways but keeps on failing. Help will be much appreciated.

The Flame is
- buggy
- not supported (no WM6), no active cooker community
- the GoForce 5500 chip isn't supported either (see my posts on this very matter; start with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=375575 ) by most games / emus
- expensive
All in all, if you aren't sensitive to the polarization issues of the x51v, get it. It's very cheap in Europe too.

Hi guys,
I'm a noobie here as my whopping total of 1 posts indicates.
I've been reading through the forum over the weekend and have learned a lot from the posts here. Unfortunately its left me more confused over which XDA I should get. So i'm going to take the easy route and ask you guys.
I've got, and have been happy using an Ipaq H5550 for a couple of years now. Both for work and pleasure, but 'The Powers That Be' now claim I need a mobile as well :?
I've spent a fair bit of time, effort and money on the H5550, what with Accessories, Utils, Apps and Games, which i'd like to keep if possible. So, my question is:
Which XDA would you guys advice as a replacement for my H5550 ?
On spec's my guess is the XDA Exec, but any advice from real world users would be more than welcome.
Thanks ZaForD.
Ah yes the H5550, an oldy but a goody!
Any way, for us to recommend a device we need to know more about your preferences / intended use.
The hottest thing (if you can wait a bit) is the Hermes / TyTN that's about to come out. It's only deficiency is that it is not VGA like the exec.
Personally, I like my Jamin (Prophet) because of connectivity and size and a price that doesn't go through the roof, but some people might say it's a bit slow, and has no keyboard (not that I need one).
And, if you don't mind a big device with a square 240 by 240 screen, there is the HP 6900 that has WiFi BT and GPS (a rare combination in a phone).
As they say to each hi own, so you have to be a bit more specific.
P.S. Welcome to the forum!
Hi levenum,
Oop's, I can see how some info on what features I need/use would be helpful before you give any advice.
Basically, I do mobile repairs, helpdesk/support, for small offices in London. So I need a fairly powerful device to run Network/Daignostic software. WiFi is a must both for connecting to local networks and our office via the Net. BT would be handy for handsfree use, the Ipaq can get pretty heavy when using Skype for a while.
Size isn't really a problem, as i'm used to the H5550. Which from what I gather is bigger than most of the XDA's here. Again the Ipaq has no keyboard so thats not a problem. Neither is GPS, after 10 years as a messenger around London, I think I know my way round.
I'll check out the Prophet and Hermes, the more options the better.
p.s. Thanks for the welcome.
Well now that I know that your main uses are WiFi and Skype I can tell you that Prophet may not be the device for you after all.
It supports WiFi b and g (where a lot of phones only support b) and it has BT, but from what I've seen on the forums it needs to be overclocked for Skype to work smoothly (although it comes with Skype preinstalled).
I haven't tested this my self though.
One thing I forgot to tell you is that there is a comparison chart in the WiKi for different HTC devices, and there is a nice site www.gsmarena.com that gives specs and user ratings on most GSM phones out there today from different companies.
Check it out.
Thanks for your help levenum,
I checked out GSMarena and came up with a short list of XDA Exec, and Atom Exec there was no real info on the Hermes. But I read alot about it here, so I added it to my list.
After hunting round for most of the afternoon, it turns out that the Atom and the Hermes. Aren't really available yet, so it looks like i'll be getting the XDA Exec. Just gotta see whos got the best deals now.
And start working my way through the Universal forum.
Welcome to the forum!
Having had xda's for a few years now, (since the 1st one was released) and in my work testing many new devices, im still delighted with my exec, espcially the screen, but mainly the keyboard and connectivity options. For your uses the mini laptop mode the exec on a desk whilst working, in tandem with the keyboard, you will soon wonder how you managed without one!
Down sides to the exec, as a phone its maybe a bit bulky to use as an everyday mobile (pub, days out without the car etc) but not much worse than any other pda phone on the market.
Hope that helps settle your mind to the exec, you wont regret it i reckon!
Cheers,
Bryson
Hi Bryson,
Thanks for the welcome.
I just saw a couple of comments about the 'laptop mode' while getting very confused in the Universal section.
I have to say I really like the idea of it. I used to use a Thinkpad X21 [lovely little laptop] for work and missed the screen and keyboard when I first swaped over to the H5550. Now it looks like I can have the best of both worlds.
The Exec is around the same size and weight as the H5550, which I usually carry around with me as an MP3 player when not at work. So the bulk shouldn't a problem.
A couple of things i'm still alittle unsure about [due mainly to not having a mobile for years] is how well it works with a BT headset, and is it possible to use it as a phone via the BT headset, while using Terminal Service over WiFi ?
If it can, I may never have to leave the pub.
Hello Everybody. Its been a couple of months since i started spending time on XDA. The major reason that pulled me here is the flexibility and customization on a Windows based PPC. Its been like 2 years i am on Symbain and now i feel its time to move on
Reading posts on XDA has been very interesting (although i don't understand most of it ). I am still looking where to start off from , to understand the wide variety of things discussed here. I have tried reading a lot but that doesnt help. So here is what i thought of. May be first i will get a PPC and then every thing may start looking easier (hope so )
I need a suggestion from you guys. My current budget allows me to get either a HTC P3400 (Gene) or the imate PDAL
Here is what i have figured out about the above 2 phones
HTC Pros
- Widely supported here.
- WM 6.1 available easily
- Large Screen size (2.8")
- HTC gaining good market
The only con here is the lack of WiFi. The next higher model would be the Touch which is 50% more costlier than the Gene and since i sparingly use WiFi ATM , it wouldnt be a wise decision to go for it
Regarding Imate PDAL, it has a smaller screen 2.4 " , WM 5.0 , average reviews and not a lot of support from developers. The only thing that is tilting me towards it is the WLAN support.
Since Gene and PDAL are going at the same price , i am in a tough spot deciding .. so thought i could take some help from the pros
Replies would be highly appreciated
just like the title says!

If you want a specific forum for discussing about your phone then visit aboutfone.com, there is separate section for imate 8502.

that site is so freaking slow!! it' turning hackers away!
Me +4
I have been using this since April 2, and my Kaiser has been in my drawer ever since (sorry HTC)
Which one, the 8502 or 9502. I have an 8502 and I've gotta tell you, it is by FAR the best PDA phone I have ever used. Not only is it VERY small in size which is GREAT, but the battery life is good too. If it had a VGA screen, and maybe a front facing camera, it would be the best phone ever. My buddies 9502 is also a very solid phone. Abit bulky but not too bad. Thinner than the tytn II but longer.
again, this forum is called XDA-devs. I find it somewhat hypocritical that it encompasses only HTC made devices. But a rule of thumb is that if its not available via XDA, it's not getting a forum.
Weird, but thats how it works

As the portal (the main page...) says, it's devoted to HTC devices.
I'm in too! I owning one 8502 and generally satisfied. Of course, it could be better with new ROM supporting SDHC!

It will never support SDHC. It is a hardware issue, in that the Wifi card uses some parts of the SD card reader.

that sucks! i hope the WM 6.1 will have an update for it.
No, it will support it.... Its not a hardware issue.... You will see!
Never gonna get tired of this phone. It's the best and only QWERTY phone I will ever use.
Best I have ever had
I have had my 8502 for about 11 weeks and it is by far the best unit I have ever owned.
This is at least my 8th PDA and I migrated from a JasJam and in every aspect the 8502 is far superior even with WM 6.0.
I use it quite heavily with lots of software installed and certainly have not had the issues that some of you are talking about.
All I am waiting for is WM 6.1 and some Rom cookers and the 8502 will be even better.
i'm suprise that my Imate 9502 is very stable and everything just works!
i have a tytn 1 upgraded to WM6.1, and usb tethering keep disconnecting!
8502 user here........ must agree this is the best windows mobile i have used.....just check out my signature, been through a lot of pdas in the last couple of years....

For me too
Guys, I've been wondering for quite some time if there is a PPC out there that "completely satisfies" the needs of various users. Therefore, if it isn't too much trouble, would you mind listing:
1) Key features you would like in a PPC
2) Any PPCs currently in the market (or in the soon-to-be market, i.e. Touch Pro 2) that fit the bill?
**Note: I don't necessarilly want you to limit yourself to WinMo phones; Symbian, BlackBerry, Android, Palm, and even Apple (yes I know...) phones are OK.
For example, I own a Touch Pro and would prefer:
- Larger screen
- Capacitive screen
- More responsiveness (most likely due to a faster processor)
- Thinner (to complement the larger screen to make it easier to type)
Anyways, thanks for taking a look and especially if you contribute.
Really, no one is willing to help my research?
So far, I've only had one Voter. Though appreciated, I'm afraid it's simply not enough.
C'mon guys, what have you got to lose? You'll be expressing your opinion on a matter which I'm sure is on most people's minds here at the forum as well as helping out a fellow member.
Maybe this thread was simply overlooked. Therefore, I feel a BUMP is in order.
Two votes now!
you need a catagory 'non of the above' for us WM fans!
btw, there are so many polls around here the last year...maybe some info in them for your research.

Windows Mobile is a given considering the forum. If I had that option, nearly 100% of the votes would be WinMo. I just wanted to know what alternatives you guys like AND WHY <= still need info.
Could you direct me to any "current" polls that may be related to this thread?
I first started with the Palm505...got hooked. Then switched to windows mobile 2003- it sucked. Then got me a Tungsten TX-it was better...but then found my dream pda...Tungsten C... there is where I found great apps and used it everyday! Now, I have the HTC Mogul running windows mobile 6.1.... love it.... but once in a while I find myself missing some of Palm's apps... not available on WM6.
I bought my wife a treo 750p... she catches me once in a while admiring the buttons and apps...
BB Storm FTW!!!!

Here's a current discussion with a lot of scoop and why info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=501708
I thought I'd leave you all with the ROM comparisons that I did when I was actively using my Universal. Half way through I upgraded to 128 MB, so this is reflected in some of the memory readings.
These are my own personal findings - I tested programs on the ROMs that I was interested in. Perhaps I'm opening a can of worms here, but I hope you find it useful.
Thanks Jonny!
Great information, will add to the FAQ
How do you feel with your new Rhodium?
My new rhodium is great - I'm not looking back! (Oops, perhaps I shouldn't have posted that here!). I know it doesn't run WP7, but there is certainly life in it yet (and I have a lot of bought programs which run on WM6.5 only, so I'm quite happy).
I enjoyed too my Rhodium!
And moved to Leo was a big shock for me coming from a real keyboard line devices...
I expect to go back to keyboard devices soon as I find a similar spec HTC device
Jonny could You paste this file with .xls extention? I don't have Office 2007 and i cannot get into it
Thx in advance

Ok, updated first post to include excel 2003 version Rom Compare3.xls
very useful information!thanks
Great
OMG...
You HAVE used your Uni buddy!
And I thought I was a serious user...still using though...nobody in my town knows what a 128 MB Uni means to me...will just keep it till I grow old.
I'm waiting for a really good WP7 piece...checked one HD7...but the software glithces.. or shortcomings are too many....let's see.
Hey kalya! nice to see you around
Perhaps would be wise to wait for Touch Pro 7

Great job!! Obrigado!
what next?
I don't know Orb...which would be my WP7 handset.
As always , win mo are dull, very down to earth, mature looking gadgets...they will never be fun and I accept that....
Just waiting for a great hardware & the new OS's perfect synchronisation.
Uni was it...we got maximum from it...but my country's mobile network never caught up with the handset.
Just waiting for it...hoping...HTC would almost deliver and I know XDA members will make it perfect.
Yes it´s true...
I have played with WP7 on my Leo and decided to go back to WM/Android as it´s to damn closed platform it seems like apple...
If WM is really dying which I doubt I think I go to Android instead...
Please let me know what you finally decide to upgrade
Cheers,
Maybe Galaxy Tab if nothing good comes out in the near future.
We win mo users don't want a new OS or high config devices as much we need really new --FRESH-- apps, but maybe the new apps reqire both the things..OS+new hardware.
Otherwise I stll have some of the handsets in my sig(and some nokia ones also)
