Hello all,
I have a HTC Universal ftom T-Mobile UK (London).
I live in Memphis, TN USA.
I unlocked the phone using this forum as a "teacher" & it's been working for me very nicely for about 1 year & 4 months on T-Mobile USA.
It came with WM5 & I've tried to do the notmal upgrades over time - it is currently at:
ROM version: 1.30.114 WWE
ROM date: 04/13/06
Radio version: 1.10.03
Protocal version: 42.44.P8
ExtROM version: 1.30.232 WWE
((whatever all that means...?))
Over time I have had wierd things (but small inconsequential things) happen to the phone like wierd battery response, intermittant microphone volume, wierd lockups, reminders not sounding off - stuff like that.
So just for the thought of maybe fixing those little annoyances, I think I'd like to upgrade to WM6.
But......there are so many options & technical jargon on this site, it's just overwhelming. I tried to read & learn, but it's just over my head.
So my thought is that some of you guys & gals that are really smart, could suggest which of the WM6 roms I should get from here.
I don't need a lot of fancy bells & whistles - I just need my phone to work / mail & tasks to work w/ my Outlook / texts & mms & camera to work / wireless and hotspot connectivity to work for surfing the internet....just simple plain stuff like that. ((I was looking at "vanilla" roms, but i'm still not sure)).
And i need it to work in the USA.
Can I get some feedback on what you all think may be the best way to go?
I'd really appreciate it.
Awaiting a lot of good feedback.........
Thanks,
Greg.
Hi,
I'd recommend Ranjus 7.1 ROM
For me, it is really stable. It also connects to WiFi nicely, and almost everything works.
I can second that. Tried the ROM today and it really lives up to its good reputation. If you want to go for a plain vanilla ROM I'd recommend NNCUONG v2.11.11 -- Just do a search for "new in town" and you can find it. I've used that one for about two months and when it comes to stability, free RAM and flashdisk space nothing can beat it. Either of those two ROMs are a great choice.

hi Greg,
As I understand you are not the adventures or daring type, regarding rom upgrading.
So I would recommend you to buy a new battery, which will surelly solve some, if not most of your "weird" problems.
Greetings,

OK, so back when I first got my phone the weekend ATT started selling I upgraded FROM the nasty ATT ROM to:
RUU_Kaiser_HTC_WWE_1.56.405.5_radio_sign_22.45.88.07_1.27.12.11_Ship
That ROM has served me extremely well. I LOVE the menu on the home screen...
Recently however I was wondering what ROM would improve some of the issues I've been having since then.
#1: I travel a lot, mostly by car and notice my phone has problems finding/switching to new towers. I want a new RADIO version.
#2: there are annoying hiccups and pauses at critical times (when using medical software) and even when not, I was hoping for a ROM with a little more speed and even less fluff.
#3: I want to be able to open office docs, pdfs, and like most of the software I have no (i.e. not looking to get a super stripped version of a ROM)
#4: I want a proven ROM with absolutely no known issues (I once thought about upgrading my radio version a while back and at page 20-something of a thread saw people where having major problems). I'll sacrifice the bleeding edge newest for a little older, stable version.
Suggestions? Recommendations?
Thanks
Well most people like Dutty's ROMs since he updates frequently and are pretty fast and come with a TON of stuff in them. I went for Alex's UltraClean Multimedia AT&T Version ROM. It seems to work fine for me and has had no stability problems. Like you, I use my Kaiser for work(I do IT Consulting) and while not as critical as anything of your profession, I do need full up-time period and Alex's ROM has met the Call to Duty and it fast and stable! Hope this answers your question.
I would suggest Alex's ultra clean then going to Dutty's cab collection and Getting the programs you need like Office and anything else you may want you can find in Dutty's cab collection he has posted.
Thats the route i went and it seems to be working for me =)
Hey there! Thanks for coming to my thread.
I'd like to say first of all that i'm new at the romflashing thing and that I spent hours browsing and searching the forum for the right rom for me .. yet I wound up here.
I might be a tad too careful for my own good, but I really don't like messing up things I care for, like my new AT&T Tilt here.
So, I thought i'd appeal to the experts for some help.
I'm looking for a rom to replace the standard AT&T Tilt one, i've used the sticky guides and done the hardspl thing so I should be ready.
Here is basically what i'm looking for:
*While I don't care that much about the design I think the black design from HTC looks better than the standard blue windows today screen, yet i'm open for suggestions (I do like to be able to customize it with links as I please).
*I would like for the PDA to retain all it's functions, that's 3G, phone, wifi, using it as a modem for the pc, etc. All original functions, nothing cut away (Unless it's really useless, I probably don't know half the functions yet, please argument if this is the case for some) - this is really important, I don't wish to lose functionality and suddenly be unable to use the gps etc.
*Speed! I really don't like all the preinstalled programs, I wanna be able to pick out the programs on my own and fit it for my needs - keeping the programs at a minimal should also make the device faster, right? - Also, I live in Denmark så half the AT&T stuff I can't even use anyways.
That's about it, basically I would love a simple, clean rom that works fast and effective, and retains all the original functions of the PDA.
Oh, and I also would like to keep the office tools and such, or an alternative if there are better programs for handling such documents out there.
Sorry if offended someone by posting.
Thanks for your help!
Sincerly.
Michael Keller, Denmark
Edit: Perhaps I should note some informations about the PDA:
ROM version: 1.57.502.2
ROM date: 08/25/07
Radio Version: 1.27.12.11
Protocol Version: 22.45.88.07H
Then your choice is...
Q-Mobile v1.2 - see my signature
awww hell. just jump in and flash away. LOL
Look thru the first few posts of the different roms and see which one you like the best.
That surely sounds like a very good option!
I'm wondering though, the today screen from the original HTC, the one with the big clock and the 3/4 small icons underneath, is it possible to manually install that on top of this rom or?
Thanks for your help.
Michael
q-mobile 1.2 owns.
I second Gabriel31337, Q-Mobile v1.2

Sure the HTC Home can be installed manually on top of Quentin Rom.
In his wiki page Quentin gives all the info.

It's not always the case. As long as the pre-installed software is on demand, not that many registry settings, and doesn't get loaded at start-up, it won't affect the speed at all. Speed gain normally depends how the ROM maker tweaks w/ system settings and removal of unnecessary driver/servics. If the pre-installed software is useful for the user and he/she has to install it anyway, you got a big saving in time/space when you need to perform a full backup since most files are in the ROM and skip by the backup program.
For speed/benchmark comparision, you should check out this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=358788 by Hery. My rom has LOTS of pre-installed apps but beat most of the lite rom variant in many aspect.
Fantastic, half an hour ago I were lost, now I believe I have everything I need. This forum and the developers should be praised
Thank you all for your help.
Michael
i didn't see any screens of the q-mobile v1.2 home...is it the same as HTC home?
n/m, i think i figured that one out...
Have you followed the link in my signature?
It's going to the wiki page, pretty nature.
There you will find everything you will need.
And much more indeed.
LOL
From my perspective the Ans. is Q ...
I tried several versions of each of the highly talked about ROMs and some that aren't discussed very much. Q-mobile is my favorite so far. Stable and junk free, maintains all the capability. The documentation is logical and clear. The author is excellent with concise answers to questions. From there you add on the nice things you may like to add. I added the HTC today with the customization app. The standard look is not worthy of such a beautiful gadget. Also added Quickmenu (not Xbutton or anything else that fiddles with or obstructs the upper right corner) for managing tasks and quick access to functions, Earthcomber, googleMaps, and Visual GPS for GPS applications (each have a different strength or advantage).
One word of caution regarding starting down this path. Addiction! It is so addictive for gadget lovers to feel the power they hold in thier hands and want to do more and more with it. You may find yourself virtually hovering for the next new thing to give you that power high! Okay, I am over stating it a bit.
By the way, this is not to take away from the awesome work being done by others. My second chioce is work done by Alex. I've seen all aspects of his work get really good and professional.
Since you are new to this, let me add another advisory comment. Really consider the fact that all of this work is voluntary spare time stuff and that the developers and users give free advice and time to help the community. I try to keep in mind that fact with everything both good and not so good. Free advice, opinions and sofware can be can be invaluable -or- worth what you paid for it.
Cheers, it's time for some hovering!
some years ago I played around with a qtek 2020 so i'm not entirely new, I just forgot most of it.
And indeed once I get everything set up and get an overview of what i'll use i'll donate a bit to all the contributors.
Thanks again for all the help.
Sincerly.

i'm about to upgrade my ROM right now to 1.2, but here's the all important question, does it have an integrated messenger like the tilt rom? i know there's an aim i can download, but i like the look and feel of the integrated one a bit better
I've not been on here for months and always find it useful, so thanks to everyone for their continued fantastic input.
I've recently started to have problems with my phone locking randomly and especially when I'm online using either Opera or Explorer.
Also had problems where the phone would reboot into the ROM flash mode.
I temporarily fix it each time by taking the battery out and leaving it for 10mins - 20mins.
I thought it would be worthwhile flashing the latest WM6 version and radio ROM but can't do a search for WM6 as it's too short.
I'm not too sure about WM6.1 with all the problems that people seem to have, but maybe someone can correct me and point me in the right direction.
Can anyone point me in the right direction for the most reliable WM6 version and radio ROMs please?
My current versions are:
ROM Version : 1.56.110.4
ROM Date: 09/01/07
Radio Version: 1.27.12.17
Protocol Version: 22.45.88.07H
Many thanks in advance.
This is a very personal question to every user. some want speed, some want battery life, and some want overall stability. I bounce around quite often between the newer dutty roms but seem to always go back to Q-mobile in the end. I guess it also depends on what applications you use since some are not 6.1 compatible. Good luck and happy flashing.
Thanks for the response.
I tend to stick to standard apps I as depend on MS Office and Internet performance is high on my priority list.
I've been going through the other postings just now and many people say that WM6.1 is much slicker when using IE. TBH, it couldn't be worse!!! I use Opera mostly as IE performs awfully in comparison, but resort to IE for those websites that won't fully work with Opera.
I also find the response time of my current WM6 version generally very slow. E.g. big pauses between entering a number on the phone keypad before it shows up. This is a pain as I often type the same number twice thinking I've not entered it correctly the first time.
I read some of the problems with the current WM6.1 Radio ROM being locked to a certain version and not allowing users to modify it etc.
The other thing I can't stand about the standard WM6 I've got is the camera takes sooooooo long to autofocus when indoors and lighting isn't very bright.
Apart from that, I don't have a problem with the software apart from speed i.e. response time.
Ok, I've just read the thread about Q-mobile 1.2 and it looks like the one for me.
I'm primarily a business user and also use the Resco suite.
If this is as slick as they come, then I'll be a happy man.

Q-Mobile 1.2 is one of the best ROMs period. Have to say that it's the best WM6 ROM available.
Hi all - subject line says it all.
I have a shiny UK Vodafone Magic turning up tomorrow and, hoping to save a bit of time, wanted to canvas the guys on here regarding their opinions of the best ROM to use on it, before I start experimenting. Have browsed the boards and it seems that the main issue with Hero ROMs is performance on the smaller RAM size. I would like as decent a UI experience as possible, but would prefer not to make my new toy unusably slow in my hunt to get that "hey, wow, shiny" UI factor.
Main important features for me (in order of importance):
* as full featured a browser as is possible
* PDA-type stuff (i.e. calendar etc)
* email, particularly Exchange connectivity
and only then
* shininess of UI!
Would I be best waiting for Jerpelea's new release before playing? Or am I better off leaving well enough alone and staying with the stock ROM (and get my Exchange fix through third party software)
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or thoughts.

well mate for stability and performance you have the Ion R4 and European rom for Magic. they are based on google interface with few tweaks. Ion r4 has hero look over google base so its a no brainer why they work so well
the hero ports don't work so well for most but looks amazing my friend. i love the Hero V1.4 by fatal1ty as it looks amazing. for me however it has some major drawbacks main one being the lag. for me also after using for few days it seems to get worse and gradually grinds to a halt. the hero black is very similar to Hero 1.4 with a few apps missing. they woirk the same more or less. thats why jerp has started new build from scratch but that is a few days away yet so your choice in waiting........... the ion r4 and european roms are good to go and offer a bit more than standard voda rom.!
you choose..........thats my opinion!
I have the same phone as you.
I would not recommend this one "[Update 6-07]HTC Hero ROM for Magic by Fatal1ty"
It is very slow on our UK Vodafone magic's
Hero ROMs are slow because the original Hero rom was built for the HTC hero with 288mb RAM instead of your Vodafone Magic's 192mb.
SP france europe rom seems the best choise..
Got a UK Vodaphone model , Ion r4 works best.

i have a uk vodafone and 1.4 is NOT very slow on mine. it is slower than the standard rom, slower than ION r4 and slower than the european one
however
it is fine for me. it has a lot of very cool features - multi-touch, facebook, twitter and flikr integration with contacts and of course it looks fantastic.
having been on 1.4 from fatal1ty and currently on the ION rom i can say that i am moving back to 1.4 as it is so much cooler. i am going to get a class 6 sd card and see if this improves speed
Paul
The class 6 wont make a huge difference - I tried. However, depends on how willing you are to put up with lag.
Personally I'd recommend the Ion R4, OR get hold of the original ION rom (I got it from Android Bloggin Network - I'll post link later) and a Root for it, then I have a blazing fast ION stock rom, with Root, so you can customise as needed.
100% stable, and Damn fast.
I tried all the hero roms, but however good it looks is a bit cruddy when you hit 10+lag between apps etc.
My phone is usable, and does everything I need until Donut, which will bring many of the social network functions in a google supported form(google still target the G1 internally, so wont hit the ram restriction like the hero rom)

Many thanks for the above, everyone.
To the Ion R4 advocates - do you mean from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=523971
Also, is there a newb-proof guide to updating ROMS (I believe it needs to be rooted first?) and, perhaps more importantly, restoring your original ROM (ie. if you don't like the results)? Again, have punted around the forums and found a few guides but most of them seem to refer to other guides that I can't track down (i.e. they say something like "follow ABC's guide up to the reboot, then do XYZ", but have no idea where to find ABC or his/her guide).
nk02 Ion R4 or the SPF European ROM
PAUL
any chance of you tubing a vid of your fatality 1.4 in action mate i think alot of users are holding off rooting and hero build rom updating because so many complain of lag issues and freezing might be nice to see the speed in action

I think Loccy has raised an interesting topic here. I am also a Vodafone UK HTC Magic user, willing to try some new ROMs with Hero's features, however what I really miss here is some sticky thread with complete step-by-step instructions of where and how to start with ROM flashing. I've been a heavy user of Windows Mobile devices some time ago, and also been playing with xda-dev any many different ROMs. But as far as I remember for each device-specific forum there was at least 2 or 3 sticky threads with complete n00b instructions. In this case it's a bit scattered all over the place and takes time to figure it all out and glue the pieces...
If I have time later I will try to create a guide - The information is there but absolutly agree it's hard to work out whats latest / correct info.
If not today then over next couple of days.
Hi newb alert here! Just to add a little to eva_d's point above (which would be great), as a newb n00b I'd find it really useful to know what the differences betwenn the different ROMs is.
I'm 99% I'm going to get a Magic on VF UK next month. The phone looks good and I like the idea of the open source OS so you can fiddle with what you get which is why I am here. I understand the OS on the VF UK magics is relatively lame. However, I am having trouble understanding what's the difference between fatal1ty's, nk02's and the smartphone euro one? I mean in terms of functionality. What difference does user see? Is it jthe UI? Functionality? Both? Are there any screenshots?
fatal1tys = nice but slow
nk02's = nice, fast, but what's the difference between the full and "lite" as a user? Compared to the stock ROM?
Euro = nice fast, but again, I'm not sure what I would be getting compared to what comes in the box? (btw French isn't a problem for me).
All the hero roms - currently having issues, good to play with but maybe not for everyday (unless jerpelas new rom out later is as good as hinted at...) Has multitouch browser and better music app
NK02 - good, based on the very fast Google ION rom - with a few extras
SFR - Good fast rom, french based but quick and stable
I use the stock ION rom, rooted with a few customisations. I managed to get the HERO camera working last night, working on the browser today, might have something to release (but I will need some help) later this week, depending on what the others release...
Fatal1ty - are you still there?
Jeperla - Looking forwards to version 005
If i was getting a new phone i would not get the VF one - i would go to orange and T mobile and look at what they are offering. The HTC hero looks very nice and it natively runs Rosie so why not just get that if that what you are after
remember the VF magic has even less RAM than the Magic provided by t-mobile - not too sure if that version is coming to uk
Paul
Note Rosie was not meant for a RAM shy device like the VF magic so it is going to struggle no matter what. it is a toss up between looks/functionality/speed so choose what is most important to you.
Looks = fatal1tys Rom
Speed = Ion
functionality varies depending on what you want - for me fatal1tys works so thats what i use

Additional n00b questions:
1) Do custom ROMs for Magic have full access to Android Market or installing apps would have to be manual after flashing new ROM?
2) How to revert original ROM? Is my understanding right that nandroid is a right tool for the job, ie. it dumps current ROM onto SD card and then allows to restore it? (just trying to glue the scattered pieces together
3) How does web browser work in various custom ROMs? I use my Magic mainly as an internet tablet for mobile browsing on the Tube or wherever, I very rarely use it for phone calls - would it be OK then to use custom ROM with some Hero features?
Hi there,
Simply, I need help and advice regarding Polaris ROM's
I was looking for answer in ROM Development section many times(FAQ too), but all topics are so confusing(disorganised, confusing and uninformative) that I'm losing my sanity.
I was trying few roms(like panosha think), but unfortunately dissapointed me(bugs, unresolved issues etc.)
So what i need is quite simple in fact:
-fast, stable 6.1 or 6.5 version
-bug free or at least little bugs
-fully working radio(bluetooth, wifi, 3G and GPS)
-need default microsoft keyboard
Don't need gizmos, although nice GUI is a good point to go.
Thank you in advance.
tl;dr
Help me finding best ROM
go to htc support page scroll down to the bottom of the page, enter your phone's serial number and you will download the newest official ROM, with update utility included.
a good rom for polaris..
It's been more than 1 year that I use the rom called 3LIT3 (FULL VERSION) on both my 2 polaris... they work very well, 3LIT3 is really a fantastic / fast/ bug-free rom. I have the "3LIT3 V FULL WWE" VERSION.. and I can guarantee for this one only. I know there are the VI, the VII and the VIII versions of the same rom, but for sure number V is absolutely perfect. Everything including bluetooth, gps, external speaker, battery, wi-fi ecc ecc is working very well, without bugs...and including footprints!!
AH I FORGOT this rom is based on WM6.1 plus manila2d of course...
You got just to update the google maps cab..and your poleris will FLY!!!.
@faredino
thx for the tip this rom ist the best rom i´ve tested
i had m-amines, which is also nice but not as fast as lit3
i had pcars 6.5 rom, which is good but very slow (i think 6.5 is´nt the right thing for polaris)
and since a few days the lite3 VIII, which blew my mind...very very good work a pitty that he stopped working on it
so if you need a good stable rom take lit3 !
How about 6.5 recommendations?
So what's a good bet for WM6.5?
Was using pcarvalho's latest (24DEC09) but it has been freezing up & generally running very laggy. My Orbit 2 is going to my wife so I need something friendly as it gets whilst also reliable & quick. WM6.1 comes over too strong on the 3LIT3 ROMs...
i just tested pcars and kostas, but haven´t found a better rom then lit3, it got not the nice appearance of wm6.5, but i prefer speed and smoothnes

Tried, tested and i can confirm that.
Stable, bug free with nice gui.
Thank you.
3lit mmm, too slow for me.. too much stuff, probably many of them will never be used.
obviously you pay your many stuff with -speed!
a 400mhz processor can perform more than that, it have to, with 3lit I felt like going back to omap 201mhz ppc generation...
I have two Polaris and on both I have returned after many tries to an official 6.1 ROM, with radio updated, and tomtom7.
I think it's all what you need, a fast and crashless rom,
for me it's just all I need
Recently I have upgraded to 3LIT3 VIII FULL ITA....
...definitely my fav's ROM!!!!!!!!!
Will thank chavonbravo for the rest of... the days of my both polaris!!
If you're also using that rom, please consider a donation to the great mind of chavonbravo!
Also..anyone has changed the rom's keyboard? i think that is the only "not really perfect" issue of 3LIT3_VIII.. but it is overall GOOD anyway
Bye everybody,

Hello,
I am looking for this option to download a new rom but i can not find.
Can I help me with a link, please.
Thank you very mutch
I am afraid downloads on HTC home page are no longer available. License for WM has expired some time ago.
Search on Touch Cruise ROM development page though.
