The "Half Cube" Today Screen dev thread - General Topics

Q: What's a "Half Cube"?
A: It's the idea of having the top half of the screen static and the bottom half as a cube.
Q: Why this thread?
A: Because I had another thread and the idea seemed popular. However, there are still hurdles to overcome to acheive the look and feel I and other people want. There are also various people developing new tools, and hopefullly they may see this and code something to solve some issues. I wanted to provide a thread where we could work together to overcome hurdles and acheive the coolest interface possible - money no object, but freeware apps would be nice of course.
Q: What am I ideally trying to acheive?
A: A top section with a clock and message counters, with a gesture controlled cube (left right gesture to spin between faces) at the bottom containing tabs for all the standard fare. Also, a favorite contacts plugin (gesture up/down to select contacts) and music plugin (gesture up/down to scroll through albums) for faces of the cube that are slick and intuitive.
Ideally it should also handle landscape mode well and the switch between portrait and landscape should not mess up the interface.
Mocked up interface:
THIS IS MOCKED UP IN A VIDEO EDITING PROG USING PHOTOSHOPPED IMAGES. DO NOT ASK ME WHAT APPS I USED OR HOW TO GET THIS UI - IT CAN'T BE DONE - YET.

The top clock area is SaFF in XMT.
The Calendar tab is potentially how ThumbCal will look - the author seems interested in doing a today plugin.
The contacts and music tabs are completely mocked up in an art package.
Needed:
1) Tabbed launcher with gesture controlled cube, capable of doing partial screen.
Candidates:
a) Ultimatelauncher
2) Clock / Message counts section for top.
Candidates:
a) XIAMultiTheme (XMT)
rlToday replacement which enhances features. SaFF (The top clock bit) is currently using XMT.
b) rlToday plus skin
Issue: Only one instance per screen, might be nice to use something else so we can have rlToday in the cube.
Issue: Does not handle landscape <--> Portrait switching and back very well.
c) ProjectION clock.
Issues: Clock only
d) HTC Home
Issue: Has extra tabs that are not required and take up screen real estate.
3) Music Player plugin for media section in cube. My personal preference for music player is Conduits Pocket Player as it is easy to navigate using hard buttons and thus safer to use in the car.
Candidates:
a) V2R music player plugin (Controls WMP)
Issue: Gesture left/right used to navigate albums and the cube "captures" that.
Solution: Author modifies plugin to allow scrolling via up/down gesture.
b) Conduits Pocket Player
No plugin today, but the browser in the main program is just like I want. Conduits say they will be revamping the today plugin soon, so hopefully it will be like this.
4) App Launcher.
Something to launch apps from a page inside the cube.
Candidates:
a) Ultimatelauncher - has a nice system for doing this, so no worries.
b) SPB Pocket Plus - My previous preferred launcher.
Issue: As you can drag things around, gestures do not work in the SPB Launcher. Locking icons does not solve this.
5) Quick / Favorite contacts
The one from HTC home is OK, but comes with too much extra junk around it.
Candidates:
a) V2R Photo Dialler 2
Issue: Gesture left/right used to navigate contacts and the cube "captures" that.
Solution: Author modifies plugin to allow scrolling via up/down gesture.
b) Ultimatelauncher adds this feature.
c) HTC Home
Issue: Has extra tabs and clock that are not required and take up screen real estate.
6) Weather plugin
Must support non-US places
Candidates:
a) SPB Weather. Not free.
7) Portrait / Landscape switching
Issue: Switching from portrait to landscape causes the clock to be left justified, not centred, and is still only 240 wide not 320.
Solution: This appears to be an artifact of rlToday, it does not happen if you use HTC Home or ProjectION
Issue: Switching from landscape to portrait causes a scroll bar to be drawn on the right. Even when this disappears (if you scroll the bar down to the bottom), it has already chopped off the right edge of the clock rltoday box, which does not automatically redraw.
Solution: This appears to be to do with rlToday, as if you use HTChome or ProjectION for the clock, this does not happen.
[Update - I found a reg key to make today plugins "Always on top" - you then get no scroll bars ever appear for that plugin]
[Added picture of new 90px high format, 32x32 icons are just placeholders for now...]

[11/03/08 - Updated info regarding reg key to make always on top]
[11/03/08 - I have now worked out rlToday landscape / portrait switching and will be doing a landscape version and providing code to auto switch between the two]
[11/03/08 - New 90px size and layout - picture added - just placeholder icons for now still]

Battery Status
I was messing around with battery status and came up with something interesting. The only problem is, I can't get it to handle landscape.
For your quick contacts requirement try Spb Phone Suite. It's the closest I have been able to get to the HTC Home contact screen. It also has call blocking features (which I was looking for) and ringer profiles (I never use).
As for the weather plugin, the only one I have been able to find is Spb. I've been searching for other weather plugins for the last couple weeks and found nothing worth using.

I checked with Ikarus concerning the issue with switching to landscape mode and he said he will look into it.

Update:
XIAMultiTheme (XMT) is now going to be used for one or more of the components. Certainly the top clock area.
The current version of SaFF for XMT is attached. Requires mortscript (for the beep when clicking a button) and VJVolubilis (To toggle bluetooth) to be installed in default directories.
Icons still placeholders, but it looks the same (except font layout which is borked as current version of XMT does not centre fonts properly) except for numbers on the SMS / Mail counters which are now outlined!

New animated GIF in the first post.
Mockup of what I want the UI to vaguely look like.

nvm... EXCELLENT app. Can't wait for a 12hour clock.
hi kandratt,
i have tried touch commander and it runs well, the only thing i thing you might find is that everything your app does is available for free on xda. so while most will evaluate they will probably not buy
keep tweaking though, if you can get to the point where it's a one touch install for emulating multiple apps i'd consider shelling out.
one issue i have is your cube emulator - i like the 3D transition effect on the htc version more than the side to side movement on yours. are you working on this?
very good application. I like this side to side movement, works fast and simple to switch between pages without bugs. (sorry for my English)
Nice app.
Works so much better at scrollling that Bio Scroll on my Vanilla 4 Flashed MDA Compact 3.
Unfortunately would only use the scrollling feature so not sure it is worth the money.
Regards
There is a setting, to desable touchflo from toch comander, if there is a HTC device with Toch flo, like polaris.
If i check this option, (that means desable the touchflo from Toch comander) then i can not pull up touch comander. I think the software developer must look better this problem with the HTC Toch devices.
Or you can tell us what settings to do with HTC Devices.
I have already done the registry change, so that the original cube don't comes up.
And something else. The thumpnails for contacts are very very bad. can that be fixed?
In the Original Cube apears the thumpnails amaising gut.
anyway to may the slide feature bring up only contacts and maybe calculator>?
Very good app. I'm using it, so could you help me how's to disable battery status above title bar (above every page)

Touch Commander 3.1 Diamond Matt Skin...
This is a Diamond Skin I put together for Touch Commander 3.1
** Copy the Diamond Matt skin folder to your device (to folder Program Files\Touch Commander\Skins\Diamond Matt)

Credit goes to everyone at XDA as I used bits and pieces of other skins and themes to piece this one together. Icons resized to work with TC 3.1

What are some of the best Today Plugin's

Ive been a windows mobile 6.1 user with HTC Vogue for 7-8 months now and I still have yet to find a Today Plugin that I am in love with.
I have tried quite a few of the readily available ones but I am curious to see what else is out there. I have scoured the forums for probably too long so now I am asking for your input.
FEWidgets, UltimateLaunch (you'll have to configure it manually), Manila2D, SPB Shell, ThrottleLauncher...

Thanks.
Are these better than spb pocket plus and why and how? I shall be thankful indeed.
better is a matter of presepective..
FEWidgets is a configurable opensource flash plugin. you can create your own plugins or use the existing ones.. i use it and it's AMAZING. very fast and very cool.
you'll have to search and experiment in order to realize what's best for you.
I have done a lot of searching however I continually find myself coming back to HTC home.
I would like something that is more intuitive and has more information readily available off of the today screen.
I like the idea behind fewidgets however I was unable to get it to work on my device.
It would be nice to get a thread that gives a summery of all of the major Today plugins and what their capabilities are.
I use UltimateLaunch as my main plugin and in this plugin I have five pages for additonal shortcuts and plugins - HTC Home 6 tab with HTC Home Customizer to change the look of HTC Home, Marsware weather panel with Rumball's animated diamond like weather icons, rl Calendar and Today Agenda. I have tried many others but didn't find much else that I needed or liked much. Havn't tried the Widgets yet though but probably will check it out some day. Always interested in fun new plugins but they have to be practical and something that I would use regularly to keep on my device. The ones I listed are very practical and I use them every day
m2d, m3d
love them both
andif you have too many plugins, use second today, its kool. if u use m2d or something similar and u use second today you can still use ur fav normal today plugins
I used rlToday and SBSH Pocket Breeze. With both I get all I want.
* rlToday lets me view some info, have a nice clock and a few icons (you can even create tabs if you combine it with mortscript).
* Pocket Breeze gives me my agenda, tasks, mail and messages.
That's all I need. It may not be the nicest view but it's usefull.
I am in the midst of trying to find a replacement for Manilla 2D, so I am currently using HTC Home. It's okay, but I imagine it's better with the customizer.
Wisbar Advanced Desktop 2 - provides loads of customisation through Themes and covers QVGA, VGA, WVGA and QWVGA.
I've tried all of those mentioned above (and a couple of others), and I find myself always going back to Homescreen pluplus. I find it the most reliable and lightweight shell, but that's mainly because I have an Elf and memory is at a premium. I'm currently developing my own theme (based on an existing one), and I really appreciate how customisable it is.
Just search for HS++ or Homescreen plusplus (or Batterystatus which was its older name).
Bernard
i flashed my htc kaiser with
which didn't have htc home inside it then i installed htc plus
believe me try it out its really nice
i have tried all these fewidgets throttle ultimate manilla but this one i think is what i can finally stick on
Titanium. M3d and 2d take too much battery/ram.
Plus, if you actually look at the files for titanium, you can customize the look pretty easily.

What?
A vertical launcher. It will, hopefully, allow you to use shortcuts, widgets and info tiles. And skins.
I plan to build something that looks like IidaHome, but more flexible (more info on IidaHome here and here)

Long start-up time is long!
Lacks many sexy effects.
Create Your Own Theme!
The default template you can see in the above pictures is available in source code on GitHub
It is very easy to adapt to create your own. Ask me for help if you have to!
Why?
My phone used to rock IidaHome launcher.
Of course, being a rip from a Japanese phone, users are asking for new features, etc., but, really, we do not have access to the source code and adding any feature is an exercise in hacking smali files.
I like vertical launchers but the Windows 7 copies, although quite sexy, only offer a limited number of apps per row and are limited by their reference launcher's own UI choices (Metro UI)
So, I started work on my own launcher (the mere fact of writing this sentence makes me feel embarrassed for re-inventing the wheel)
That's interesting. Is that what will appear on the App Drawer or is that for the home screens?
i'd be very interested in this as well... good luck
it looks pointed on the right way, keep on it. I just hope there will be a version for mobiles, not only for tablets (you're using a nook, aren't you?)
It's a complete home screen. I had not considered the app drawer angle.
[Mobiles] Yes it's one of the things that bothered me with IidaHome: it doesn't make good use of real estate offered by different resolutions. This particular home is created with the intent to work with any resolution; it will be possible to specify how many cells you wish per row so that you can have more cells on a Nook and, say, a max of three or four on a WVGA device.
Two quick question for the OP. What version of Android will this be for? Will you include grayscale support for the Nook Touch?
I should work on 2.1+ so your device should work.
Grayscale: I am not sure what needs to be done for that but I can certainly test on a grayscale device.
yum yum ......looking forward to this
Day 2 Update
(I can only work on this in the evening)
No video at this point, but I have:
1. Icons properly lining up and scrolling
2. Multi-column icons support
3. Add more application shortcuts
4. Add shortcuts such as bookmarks, pictures, contacts...
5. Add widgets
Missing:
1. Persistence
2. Correct icon gap management for multi-row widgets
3. Re-ordering icons
4. Separators/Folders
5. Proper refresh
6. Any kind of objects management
7. Customization of any kind
Interesting launcher. I think it would look better if the tiles had no background or a transparent one.
Thanks.
Of course the pictures you are seeing right now are by no means a commitment to a given look. In fact, it will be skinable, meaning no tiles, transparent tiles or tiles-made-of-cheese tiles
Day 4 Update
Added a new video at the bottom of the OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyK8kn5NsE4
This video shows widgets and on-screen dragging and re-ordering of shortcuts and widgets.
This is a fantastic idea. I'm tired of iPhone wannabe horizontal launchers. It makes much more sense to allocate the icons in a vertical space rather than horizontal. It's much easier to slide vertically rather than horizontally. I believe this launcher is going to be big when it's ready.
when this is ready will it work on asus transformer (tablet)??
Day 5
Not much excitement today. I completely rewrote my layout engine so that every empty cell is automatically filled with something if possible.
I also added separators. They don't do everything I want yet.
Something that's starting to bother me: I really need to animate the widgets; at this points they can display an initial state and I can touch them to launch whatever, but they do not have a frame-by-frame animator class to give them life yet.
Jazux:
Yes, it is meant to work with any resolution so it should work on tablets.
The animation of the tile and transitions are very important to me and other i believe! And don't forget to keep everything fluid, because i have tried several launchers and only 1 is good enough
Keep up the good work
Hum, nice.one, i had a look and a long try, to iida ui.
You should try to.make it as.beautifully, animated as it.is.
Nice work, keep it up.

Day 6
Currently, there are no animations. Things show up, scroll up/down, disappear. That's because I want to get the basics right before I get into animating anything.
But, yes, this program will ultimately be animated; I want to use it myself so I would like something that makes me happy to look at and interact with.
Anyway, today:
I got the widget to display correctly and instantly. Then, that behavior broke (hate days like that!)
Separators work; they can hide apps
Complete refactoring or "Apps/widgets/special" code
Introduction of "Edit" mode (moving icons around will work in both modes)

Will there be a beta version for testing purposes?
If you get the vertical scrolling working perfectly how big a leap would it be to have say a regular left/right scrolling launcher with vertical scrolling only from your default home screen? I'd love to have a standard 5-screen horizontal launcher with one up/one down on the central default home screen (both with continuous scrolling...), or even as a launcher 'cube' with four horizontal and one up one down accessible from any of the horizontal scrolling screens (like turning a cube). Is any of this possible?

Update
Beta 1.0.1
releasing the tab quick control will now bring up the standard window with open tabs in which you can close tabs by swiping them "away"
fixed "find on page" menu item text
It seems to work pretty well on my GN running the Revolution HD rom. The ONLY issue I see is that either the unused space in the controls need .. controls or needs to be made transparent. The shadow close to the edge of the screen where ones finger is ... is a bit ugly. But since it's a beta ... FRIGGIN awesome job!
Running great on my GN
Can I reguest a feature? Custom UA-string would be a killer feature
Edit: another feature request: custom download folder would be great also.

I've been really wanting more Quick Controls, so this is fantastic so far!
I do have a few thoughts; hopefully you'll find some of them worth doing:
1) Could you provide an option to use the volume rocker for other uses like page scrolling or tab switching?
2) A very minor point that drives me crazy is that if I select the menu option from the quick controls, the pop-up menu list always pops up on the left side of the screen -- it'd be nice if, when I use the quick controls on the right, the pop-up menu list (i.e. the option I get when pressing your "!" button) would pop up on the right so I could easily reach it with the same finger/thumb I used to activate quick controls.
3) I'd love a quick way to access notifications when full-screen browsing -- perhaps something in quick controls or the pop-up menu to pull down the notification shade -- or maybe even better, an option to launch an application from quick controls or the pop-up menu (since I could then use something like status bar expander to pull down the shade).
4) Some sort of quicker toggle for inverted screen -- I like the black background for battery savings on AMOLED screens, but it's annoying how it also inverts pictures. So, if I want to quickly see a picture displayed properly or if a page just doesn't seem to be displaying properly when inverted, it'd be nice to have a quick toggle to take me back to the normal state instead of having dive down into accessibility options.
5) I suspect this might be difficult -- but I'd like to have the option to customize the tab that gets focus after closing another tab (like in Tab Mix Plus for Firefox). Right now, I'll sometimes open 5-6 tabs in the background from a single page. I'll go to one of the pages, read it, then close tab and end up back at the original page. Then I'll have to switch tabs back to one of the other background-opened tabs and repeat the process -- taking up extra time, even if I use the tab switcher instead of using the X or back button on the quick controls. Instead it would be nice if after closing a new tab, I go directly to another of the new tabs, until all the new tabs have been closed and I'm back to the page from which I opened all the new tabs. I guess a tricky part is keeping another desirable behavior -- when opening a link from Gmail for instance, closing the linked page should still bring you back to Gmail.
6) This is probably something that requires root and even then I'm not even sure if it's possible -- but it would be super-cool if you could add extra browser buttons to the soft menu area on the Galaxy Nexus -- an option to put a frequently-used button like a refresh button or bookmark button or whatever.
Suggestion: Some way to close all tabs quickly. When I reach 16 tabs, swiping all of them closed is a pain.
Any words on why all the permissions are needed?
I'd just like to know before installing.
Nice job, I was just playing on my transformer and thinking having this would be nice.
One thing that would be a great feature would be an option to hide the Galaxy Nexus navigation buttons at the bottom. You would need to add a home button to the quick controls, so not sure exactly how hard that would be.
Small Beta 1.0.2 Update
* added option to set the User Agent String (Settings -> Advanced)
* cosmetic fixes: new icons, removed background controls (see screenshot1)
* switched the "add new tab" control and the "show tabs" control for easier access
BTW the option request desktop site is still used. Selecting this option will toggle the User Agent setting for the current tab. All pages loaded in that tab will listen to the new setting (this way one can set a tab to load mobile pages when the default user agent is set to desktop or vice versa.
Thank you all for the feedback!! I certainly will use a lot for the upcoming version. Great suggestions.
great work appelflap. thank you man!!
when i have auto rotate on and switch between portrait and landscape mode the webpage reloads. is this a bug ?
when you view a flash video (plugins on demand) in portrait mode turning to landscape mode reloads the page and you must start the video again..
Thanx for the great app, works perfectly on Galaxy Nexus.
Would it be possible to add an option, that clears cache and history automatically whenever I am closing the browser? This is something I am definitely missing on most mobile browsers.
appelflap
I use a virtual trackball app on my galaxy nexus. Is there a way to add cursor support into this browser app? Thanks.
Not working on my Galaxy S2.

Introduction
Smart Car Dock is a new car dock launcher. It allows you i.a. to add apps and shortcuts to buttons for triggering them more easy in car, like other car dock launchers do. But Smart Car Dock has, compared to other car launcher apps, many more features.
Features
The apps has 1 to 8 pages and each page has 1 to 16 buttons. The user can set the page and button number like he/she wants to. The motivation for this: Less buttons can have more space, get larger and are easier to click in car. Devices with larger screens, like tablets, can hold more buttons with an appropriate size.
The following assignments are possible for any button:
launch apps, shortcuts (f.i. short-dialer), and show widgets (two per page). I don't know of any other car dock launcher that can add widgets
a gps view like velocity (mph/kmh), altimeter (ft./m) and driving direction (en/ger)
time (am-pm/24h) and date view (us/eu)
multimedia player shortcuts like play/pause, stop, next and previous song (Not any player supports this!)
shortcuts to raise/lower volume, mute/unmute device and speaker on/off
shortcut to trigger voice commands (Google voice search or voice dialer-if installed on device)
exit app
More functions:
Drag and drop buttons (by long-clicking text)
Change image and label of buttons
Clicking on a gps-, time- or date display launches a cockpit-view. In this view you can see the current velocity, altimeter, driving direction, time and date. Depending on which mentioned element was clicked in the main-app, this element will be as large as possible in the center of the cockpit-view. All the other mentioned elements are placed around this element. The cockpit-view can be left again by clicking anywhere on the screen.
Current location visible in action-bar and cockpit-view
Swiping down triggers a voice control. If you say "right" or "rechts" (ger) you scroll to the right page. If you say "left" or "links" (ger) you scroll to the left page. Any button on the current page gets a number on the upper left. If you say this number the button will be triggered. You can also jump directly to a page. For instance if you say "page 6" or "Seite 6" (ger), you switch to page 6 directly, regardless on which page you currently are. If you left the app by triggering a button, you return to the app by saying "home" or "zurück" (ger). The control will be restarted automatically until you say "finished" or "fertig" (ger) or until you swipe up in the app. It is necessary for this control to have a proper speech recognition installed on the android device. It is also recommended to install offline speech recognition packages in case there is no internet connection available.
Automatic screenrotation
chose englisch and german language
activate car-dock-mode on power-, on bluetooth-connection, on magnet-detection, or always on app-start
unlock screen on app-start
sound/vibration on click
Automatically answering calls in car-dock-mode

chose the visible number of pages from 1 to 8 (note: there is a limitation of max. 2 and 4 pages on older devices with low heap memory)
chose between 1 to 16 visible buttons per page (note: there is a limitation of max. 8 buttons on older devices with low heap memory)
automatically switch between day-, night-colors and brightness by light-sensor (if available) or by time
change any color of any element in the app by a color picker
scale images of buttons by 5 different sizes
change the language of the currently shown location to 7 different languages (if available by google) or to the language of the country you are currently in
change the location-detection accuracy
import and export all setttings and assignements
....and much more!

Which elements do you think have a lack of material design? I have no control over the app and shortcut symbols, since they come from the users android os. Do you mean the button symbols i created myself, the buttons under section "More" ? Or do you mean the buttons itself? The style of them can be configured a lot by the user (colors, shape, gradient color, solid color,.....). And that' s why i am a litlle limited, since the styling must be changeable programmatically by java and not by xml. Or do you mean the settings or dialoges or the cockpit-view?
Can you give me a hint what you would do different? I`d appreciate it very much and see what i can do!
thx

take a look at android material design spec. may you use card view instead of your self painted black and white background in cockpit view. I think shadows would be great to get a plasitcal optic
I have one idea:
Can you make it possible to have another dialer.
I mean directly in the app great buttons with the numbers 0 to 9.
So you can touch them easily.
Thanks.
Good

Hi Dtrieb,
a big-button-dialer could be possible, but not inside the button-view. Maybe in another Activity like the cockpit-view. But then, it wouldnt be such a great feature, since you can just add some third-party big-button-dialer to a button in Smart Car Dock......
Version 2.8 released
Hey everyone,
