TomTom Navigation Software on Self-cooked ROM - Touch Cruise General

Hello,
i'm a new xda Orbit 2 (Touch Cruise) owner from germany, and i have a question concerning those self-cooked ROMs you can read about everywhere in this forum. I don't know wether this question is so smart, but anyway: is it possible to flash my orbit2 (which came bundled with TomTom Navigator Software) with another ROM from this forum? Because the cab files for TomTom are in the extended ROM as far as i know. Is it possible to install the TomTom Software manually afterwards, or are there actual ROMs which contain the software? If this is the case, can you give me some hints about which ROM is the best to give a try? Excuse my grammar/spelling issues, and many thanks for answers.
Greetings

If there is no TomTom.cab in the cooked rom, you can install TomTom from the CD in your Orbit 2 package.
But think about the possible warranty loss, if you are not able to install an official rom back and have to sent the device to O2 for repair.
Best regards
Starwalker

Are you sure the XDA Orbit 2 from O2 came with TomTom? - mine had Co-Pilot Live 7 installed which is a different GPS navigation package all together (and a very capable one IMHO).
If you want to install other GPS related navigation software simply purchase it and install it, it doesn't need to be part of the ROM installation in order to work - forget about flashing the phone with a new ROM unless you really need to - Mike

thank you for your answers, it is indeed TomTom that came with my package, o2 UK and o2 Germany are selling different devices as it seems (or different software). I will consider not to flash my Orbit, it is running very well now.

mda compact --> xda mini

Hi everyone,
here is a complete noob posting. So don't be too rude in your answers!
I bought a new MDA compact from t-mobile Germany and I want to get rid of the branding or change it to the O2 Germany version of it (it's my provider). There is no simlock or anything similar.
That is the reason I found your page. And I took a big look around.
At the moment I think that the only way to "debrand" my mda is to copy a "clean" "shipped rom" on it.
So here are my questions:
1) Are the shipped roms debranded versions of the ones that are already provided or do they have more bugs than the respective branded versions?
2) What are the differences between the different rom-types? Which of these are valuable for my purpose?
3) Suppose I created a backup of my rom and want to flash it with a version from your ftp. Can I reinstall my backup, even if the installation process of the other rom stopped and didn't finish or am I completely ****ed?
-------
By the way: It would be very nice if you could extend your encyclopedia a little. For example it would be nice to have some explanations on the different types of roms.
-------
Thanks already for your help!
There's not much difference between ROM versions, just get the most up to date if you're going to update.
Apply the bigstorage hack. If you're doing that, you might as well upgrade the rom at the same time.
I wouldn't change the ROM if you're having no problems with it. Very little has changed that I can tell, nothing that would force me to upgrade if I had to do it again.
Debranding - the branded versions (eg tmobile) might come out with more things bundled in, but almost everything can be downloaded from XDA Developers' FTP site - look in the extended rom area. These things are optional, and generally just brand your phone, so best not to bother!
There's software available to "easily change splash screen" to change the boot up screen to anything you want to remove that branding. I have a QTEK Rom and don't notice any other branding.
Hope that provides some info!

Can't stand WM5, how to get back to W2K3???

Hey there. I used this site a couple of months ago to upgrade to WM5, and it worked just fine, (only problem was sim manager was missing).
Turns out my Destinator can't run on WM5, and my primary motive for buying the xda was GPS capability, so i REALLY need to either download some software with aussie maps that will run on WM5, or revert to 2K3 and use my legit copy.
Please help =)
sorry guys.... Really need to get it back to 2003
have you tried the normal way ?

hi rudegar. thanks for the link. not sure what to do with it though? is there not a package like there was for WM5 to install? like, can I download 2k3 that will re-write itself over WM5?
i'm in way over my head here. sorry to be a pain.
grab a 2003 rom off the ftp

Thanks Mate.
What are the risks of putting the wrong rom on?
I have the stock standard 02 XDA2 (i think thats the himalaya to you guys? I'm from Oz...)
So I've gone for the Qtek 1.75 english rom which i think looks like the most likely one mine would use. Please advise... it's downloading currently.
not sure if it would accept a wrong rom at all
but it's the himalaya rom you need
and 1.75 is the latest official english rom

Hi apokryphus,
I had the same problem with my Xda mini S - o2 usually stores the additional .CAB-files for the homezone indicator on the ROM, so before flashin to a new ROM you can (and should) just copy them and store them on a storage card. On Wizard, I needed two files, one was for the channel and one was the Homezone indicator tool. You can also call the o2 hotline for free and they will most probably send you the files per eMail. In fact, the German o2 hotline is (or was at least) one of the best hotlines I ever called. Just ask them.
Cheers,
Eriol
I'm not sure it's the best idea to call them and tell them that you have flashed a custom ROM on your device..

Would YOU do this? REALLY? Even if there is no need to do so??? One might think a while ... and figure out that it might also be possible that you own an unbranded HTC device without the Homezone software. This might work ;-)
Easiest way is to save the needed .CAB files from the original ROM and store them on a storage card.

I guess if you have a Touch Cruise, and not a UK O2 branded XDA you'll have to go to the HTC site
That is correct, the HTC branded devices have different firmware to the o2 branded devices. You can obtain that from the HTC website.

have a good time!!!
Orbit 2 WM6.1 ROM
Loaded it today!
A couple of nice tweaks but I still feel the os needs a major revamp which will hopefully come with WM7.0.
I'm not a big stylus user and a couple of things really bug me, especially the silly little 'x' to close windows in the top right of the screen.
Whenever I'm in the Comms Manager and want to close the thing I seem to keep turning on 'airplane mode' rather than hitting the 'x' button because they're so close to each other!
I still think the device is the best out there though.
just wondering if anyone else has found this problem at som points my orbit will freeze and then start reacting like 10 seconds later.
This is the only problem i have yet to find/annoy me with the rom so far so quite happy, even more happy by the speed increase over the original rom
Hi, i downloaded the rom update, from O2 was wondering if gps and tomtom work fine still, and also with igo 8, i dont wanna flash it and find my gps wont work, thanks peeps.
I have updated to 6.1 and all appears OK, in fact I havn't noticed any major diffirence. For info I have both TomTom and CoPilot working OK.
I am no expert on this ROM upgrading lark, but it took me hours to get my Orbit back to its previous state with the installation and configuration of various apps.
Do those brave guys who are constantly changing their ROMS have to go through hours of re-configuration each time or is there an easy way??
A
is that with your internal gps, i have not got a clue myself about this stuff, you dont unplug anything while its doing it do you.
Battery life seems much improved. Also, the QuickGPS util works very well and a lock can be had in seconds rather than minutes.
One funny - my Direct Push email would not work correctly after the initial upgrade. I could download all my content but the device refused to stay in sync requiring a send/receive to empty the Outbox. No amount of deleting/recreating the Exchange partnership helped. In the end I chose "Clear Storage" and did it all again from scratch. That did the trick....
From my other thread in the sub forum...
Hello!
I'm trying to upgrade my orbit 2 from wm6 to 6.1 using the official patch on the 02 website. When I enter in my serial number I get the download link with some instructions.
One such instruction is...
"Please note that if you already have CoPilot satellite navigation software on your Xda, read this installation manual (links to PDF) before upgrading to Windows Mobile 6.1"
The PDF talks about upgrading from wm5 to wm6 with co pilot 6 installed. Now im upgrading from 6 to 6.1 with copilot 7 installed
Do I still need to follow the guide? or can I just install the upgrade without touching the copilot 7?
I dont want to lose the use of the co pilot software by not deactivating it prior to the upgrade.
I tried calling o2 but they were useless.
Cheers
just reactivate it as you did the first time round @orbit2user123z
Windows 6.1 for O2 Xda Orbit 2 - and the features are?
Now this upgrade is available what do we O2 users get in terms of features? The HTC version on their site details some minot tweaks but not enough to want me to install the upgrade, can anyone give us a definite list of features in O2's new ROM?
I've got it all working now - cheers Madheadwil
Before i found this thread i thought my Orbit 2 was faulty, i could not get any roms to install onto my device but now YESSS!, thank you

That would be really helpful. I don't want to waste a couple of evenings reinstalling and reconfiguring all my applications if 6.1 doesn't do a lot more than 6.0 (or the things which have changed are things which I wouldn't use). Anybody know?

02 XDA Serra - treat like Touch Pro Original

Hello,
I'm planning to get the xda serra - can I treat it like a htc branded touch pro and follow the rom and radio update instructions available here? or will i need to do different things?
Also are the sim unlock instructions same as a htc branded touch pro?
Could someone let me know.
Thanks.
I've just bought a serra but i'm scared to do anything with it.
could someone answer the question made by spark.
so no Serra users out there with cooked roms?
ive done it and its fine so far installed one rom 8 times with the updates, read the wiki and you will be fine, read about hard spl and read about it good-read twice if your not sure then the world is your oyster.just remember that if when you plug it it usb and it doesnt connect you can put it into bootloader mode and install a different rom if active sync doesnt work right.read about the differnet roms out there.
and keep checking the forum for updates etc.
best of luck and remember read about it before you do anything.
if your on o2 it should be unlocked anyway mine is, just use hard spl (hard spl for touch pro)for it dont use any other type eg... for htc diamond, touch etc as its only ment for the 1 model i think(iam i right guys).

Thank you for the answer (its given me the confidence to go buy one).
I'm going to get the Serra some time next week (now that i know the touch pro cooked roms will work). I'll probabily use the ROMeOSĀ² version as it looks nicely cut down.
Yes, I'm using a cooked ROM on my Serra. Works a treat.
After reading all your replys i'm gouing to finally use a cooked rom on my serra.
I (like spark, sort of) have got a serra but never did anything with it. I never knew if i could just treat it like a touch pro (now i do).
Is there a original serra rom out there incase i need to put back back to its original state for warranty reasons? - i've browsed through the rom section but cant seem to see any.
The original XDA Serra ROM is available - see the link in the wiki.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Raphael_WM6.1_ROMs
I did try a different ROM on my original XDA Serra - basically the original HTC ROM, but I did have lots of problems with GPS. It did turn out to be a hardware problem and my device has been exchanged, but until I am confident every feature is fully working I'm not going to change the ROM again. Plus, other issues my original XDA Serra had (such as device.exe errors on keyboard slide out, random freezes, running slowly) dont' seem to be issues on the new one.
See my signature - the O2 ROM only stayed on my device briefly - it was OK but GPS lock was a nightmare (although I see O2 have issued a fix now). I will be cooking my own once I get a little time, but found the PROven roms to be good bases.
