I can't for the life of me get my touch dual to connect to the Windows Mobile Device Center on my vista machine. I've tried everything -
1. uninstalling and reinstalling USB drivers
2. uninstalling and reinstalling WMDC
3. hard resetting my device
NOTHING works!
When I connect, all I get is "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it ...."
Does anyone know how to fix this? I've called Dell, HTC, Msft. No one knows. I am totally frustrated b/c I can't flash my device with a new ROM or even just move files to my device.
HELP!
Did you install SP1 on your vista machine ?
My phone was syncning perfectly up until i intalled SP1 2 days ago.
I also tired the 3 things you did. Fortunately after the hard reset i discovered that the phone WILL syn using the BT connection, just not via usb
try this. Open task manager on your PC (ctrl+alt+del) and kill wmplayer.exe (windows media player process) reconnect your device. See if this helps.

Hmmm ... wmplayer.exe isn't running.
@rostol - no, i'm don't have SP1. it just says Windows Vista Home Premium.
I'll try to connect via bluetooth to see what happens. if you guys have any other ideas, I'm totally open.
Update: I can connect via bluetooth now, but still not USB. Grrrrr ....
I had a similar problem. I have ESET Smart Security and Vista SP1 installed and found that, with ESET's firewall actively filtering, I am unable to sync. I set ESET to not filter while the phone is plugged up and all is well.

1. Keep the WM device connected.
2. Go to Start > Start Search.
3. Enter Device Manager or devmgmt.msc to launch the Device Manager window.
4. Look under the Network adapters node for Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter. If this is not present, skip to step 5. Otherwise, right-click Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter and choose to Uninstall.
5. Look under the Mobile Devices node for Microsoft USB Sync. If this is not present, skip to step 6. Otherwise, right-click Microsoft USB Sync and choose to Uninstall.
6. Disconnect and reconnect the WM device. The device driver for the PPC Phone will re-install and Windows Mobile Device Center will launch.
Did you try this?
Go to Start > Settings > Connections > USB to PC > Uncheck "Enable advanced network functionality"
Thank u

Hello!
I have a HTC Universal (hard reseted) and a laptop with a fresh installation of windows vista rc2 (5744).
I can't make vista install the appropriate drivers to be able to connect to HTC.
I can open WMDC but it keeps saying "not connected". When I connect my HTC to laptop, via USB, nothing happens. Seams that vista doesnt recognize my PPC. Onether thing, perhaps without importance, I tried to connect a flash disk Pen and nothing happened either! It seams that Plug and Play device discovery is not functioning on vista. Is it normal?
Can anyone help me?
Thanks a lot!

Plug and play issue on vista?
Hi!
I'm having problems with instalation of HTC and Vista Windows Mobile Device Manager!
The device is not recognized by Vista, I mean, I connect the USB cable to laptop and nothing happens! But I can open WMDC but always says "not connected".
The wierdest thing is that I've connected 3 Pen Drives and nothing happened too!
Is this a general issue problem with Plug and Play discovering devices or is this nonsense and not related?
Please help! I'm getting desperate!

USB Issue
If you can't access a pen-drive then you probably have a driver issue with regards to your USB ports and will be unable to access your Windows Mobile device via USB. If you have bluetooth you might want to try connecting via that. The general Beta release only has basic support for WM devices (There will either be a seperate download or it might make the gold code) if you are part of the vista beta you can download the enhanced support (duplicates ActiveSync functionality) from the connect site.

I have just flashed my wizard with a TNT wm6 and now I can't get activesync to regonize my device. I am using activesync 4.5. I uninstalled activesync and relaoded it. I have rebooted both my wizard and my laptop. I have checked the coms and let activesync look for my wizard and it tells me that my device has npot been detected. My wizard is showing the plugged in icon and is taking a charge from my laptop but its not allowing me to share info. is there anything I am missing....?
thanks!
I got the same problem! Cant sync with 2nd PC after upgrade to TNT5.0. I reinstalled Active Sync but it wont work. Now I only can sync with the PC which used to flash ROM. Is there any bar in OS that just allow sync to 1 computer?
Nopes !!!
There's no bar of any sort in any OS as not establish connectivity through Activesync.Which Windows are you using,Active Sync will only work on WinXP and not on WinVista.
1.Disable any Firewall or Anti virus program, check connectivity now.
2.disconnect phone from usb cable, delete partneship from pc and phone.
3.Uninstall Activesync,reboot pc.
4.Get phone into bootloaders mode (multicolor screen),Hook up the phone with pc via usb cable, check if usb appears at the bottom of the bootloaders in the phone,if it's there than,it's establishing connection with phone,if not then, there's a problem either in anyone one of these :-
a) USB cable , b) mini usb port of the phone c) Usb port of the PC.
Dig out the problem and rectify accordingly
Cheers !
Yep... All checked!
Before upgrade, normally I've using all 2 PC (and some others PC) to sync with. I upgraded on PC1, is OK. Plug in PC2, it still recornized, connecting but couldnt connected. Batt charging normal. I've deleted all partnership., reinstall ActiveSync, disable Kapersky AV... but still get error. Oh my God, do I have to reinstall Windows??? It's too tired and take long time....

DiCham, have you had any development on this or has anyone else had this problem? I downloaded the same verison from Nov07 and have not been able to connect since.
when it set to advanced networking it should give up a network device
in the network connections folder
rightclick this network device and choose properties and in there
uncheck the kaspersky protocol (not uninstall)
you can also try to uncheck the advanced network setting on the wizard

Sadly, I have no development upto now because I have no time to reinstall Windows in 2nd PC! I hope it will help... thinking about USB driver/controller reinstall first, it will take less time than whole WindowsXP...

da_jojo: thanks very much! It work but unfortunately, i'm right on reinstalling Windows! hehehe....
I recently flashed my ROM from WM5 to WM 6. Thank you XDA. The problem I am having is now my Vista Computer won't connect with my MDA. Before the Flash it snyc fine. I uninstalled WMDC and reinstalled it and nothing. WMDC is aweful, Active Sync is great. Help maybe it is some kind of trick to get Vista to recognize it again with the new flashed WM6.
make sure you are using Active Sync. ver 4.5.....?
with some roms you have to uncheck the box "USB-PC" Found in settings/system/or sometimes found in connections,"USB-PC" and uncheck Enable advanced Network functionality. Then try and Sync
I can't use Active Sync with Win Vista. Any other suggestions..?
Then restore Vista to when it was working.
I'm also having trouble with Vista Ultimate (x64 and x32) and my Wizard (Octavoi's ROM)
It sees my device for a few seconds and then it closes.. The WMDC doesn't see my device at all...
The Event Viewer shows the following:
Windows Mobile-based USB device is plugged in but is unable to make a network connection to the desktop.

Does anybody know how to solve this?
I've tried to uncheck the 'Advanced Network Functionality', but that also doesn't seem to work.....
Firewall could be the culprit.
Check your settings in your firewall. If you have Windows OneCare that would also interupt your connection with WMDC. But with any firewall program make sure that it allows or is in the trusted mode for any Windows Mobile Device.
I have Windows Live One Care but I don't think that's the problem.
I turned it off and tried to connect... without succes
But I'll give it a try again this afternoon.
i'm the other way, i went from vista to xp at work because of stupid autocad 2008 problems (don't get me started) and i prefer wmdc over activesync.. i have ver 4.5 and i have issues like it sometimes will randomly disconnect or won't complete a sync. other times i have no issue though. I never had a problem on vista with wmdc.
when i first hooked up my pda in vista it would load the driver in vista but, wouldn't connect, turned out it was loading an older driver and i manually updated to the newest one and just like that it was connecting, later i downgraded the driver to be able to update the rom and it was still working.

Where did you get the newer drivers from?
Try this :
Go to device manager in Vista
While connecting your wizard the device manager should refresh and add a 'MS Windows Mobile Remote Adapter'
Now right-click that adapter and choose 'uninstall'.
Vista will add the device again and soon after WMDC should connect.
At least it worked for me...

Hello Gurus,
I'm having tough time. I'm unable to connect my htc pro2 w/ WMDC on Windows 7 Ultimate version (32-bit).
I clean installed everything (Windows 7, WMDC multiple times). Tried unchecking USB-PC Connection/'enable faster connection' on phone but of no use.
Please help.
Please help/
Does anyone how to resolve syncing problem? WMDC can not see my device and device manager shows 'unknown device'.
anybody, plz help
I'm not able to connect my pro2 to pc using usb cable. Device driver is not installed corectly.
try using a different USB port, i cant use the front port on my work computer (same things you described, the driver wont install) but it works fine with the rear port, it may not be getting enough power from the front port
also, there is a setting to disable charging from a PC via USB, this might help as well (ive never tried it though)
It did not work.
I tried both things as suggested by you, it did not work. It shows that driver is not installed correctly 'unknown device'.

I resolved the issue by uninstalling the drivers that are marked as suspect. Then connect phone to pc and it will look for the drivers and install them again. It is only a temp fix because it will happen again but MS is working on a hotfix to resolve the issue. Since doing this I have had no issues syncing at all. You can also sync by bluetooth if you have bluetooth installed on your desktop or laptop. Just choose active sync or file explorer if all you are doing is moving files. Hope this helps you
The fix is this:
On your smartphone, in the USB to PC settings, uncheck the setting "Enable faster data syncronization"
Press okay.

On AMD based desktop (32-bit windows 7), front port/back usb port. results are same.
I tried on XP laptop (XP professional) with ActiveSync, I get error that 'connected usb device exceed the power limit of usb hub port'. I searched the internet for solution, tried couple of them but same error.

Hey there,
I'm having issues trying to sync my phone with my computer. When I connect my phone, nothing happens, Zune doesn't launch, and when I open it, it doesn't show my device as connected. I've tried everything I can think of, different USB ports, rebooting both the phone and my pc. I'm running windows 7 64 bit, and it was working before. Anyone know what's going on?
Thanks for the help!
p.s. I tried uninstalling the drivers for the device, and upon reinstall my computer said it was installing drivers for "Microsoft USB Sync" thought that was weird...
try making it forget your device (don't have your phone plugged in). to do this, click on the phone icon in the bottom left of zune, click view sync options, and then on that screen click forget device.
after this, try and connect it again.
Didn't work, i plug my phone in, and Zune still says I have no device connected
does your computer make it's sound when you connect the phone (device detected sound)? if not, you might need to reset your phone (settings > about > reset phone). if yes, does it show the eject icon in the notification area (system tray)?
yes, it makes the sound, and yes it shows the eject icon... this is very odd
I had this problem too. When i went to the Device Manager, it showed unknown device when i plugged my phone in using the USB cable.
Here is what I did (Windows 7). If you see an unknown device, right click it and select Update Driver Software. Click Browse my computer for driver software, then click Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer. Then click on the Have Disk button, then browse to C:\Program Files\Zune\Drivers\Zune and select WMZuneSerUSB.inf. Then select Windows Phone 7. Hit Next and you should now see your Unknown Device show up as either Windows Phone or the name of your phone under Portable Devices in the Device Manager.
Actually, I forget if it is WMZuneSerUSB.inf or Zune.inf, so you'll need to try both.
Hope this helps.

I had this problem with my Samsung Focus.
Try using the cable that came with the phone, not another one...
That is what worked for me..
Nothing seems to be working, I may have to reset my phone, which i was hoping to avoid...
Did you perhaps use the hidden Tethering feature? If so, then change that option back to "Zune sync" and you're done. It is not possible to use your phone for Zune sync and tethering at the same time, for now.

Now that you mention it, I can't remember if I did that on this phone, or my last optimus that had to be returned. What exactly do I need to do to change that back? I totally forget the process...

Dial ##634# to go to "Diagnostic mode"
Then enter *#7284# to go to "Micro USB Test"
You then have 3 options to choose: "Zune Sync" (default), "Modem, Tethered Call" and "Modem, USB Diag". Change it back to "Zune Sync" and you'll be able to connect with Zune on your PC.
Anyone else having this problem? Zune doesn't recognize my WP7 phone on a laptop with Win 7 x64, but same phone+cable works on a laptop with WinXP
The Win 7x64 laptop does connect to the phone - I tried the above tethering change and was able to pull files from my WP7 storage - but when I switch it back to Zune synch it doesn't work.

Is this specific to Samsung models? I can't get to the micro USB test on my lg optimus
EDIT: Problem solved, I had to switch back to MS COMPOSITE, and now it works fine.
Hmm yeah I have this issue on my HD7 with my PC running Win7 x64.
The phone connects fine on both ends (sound on both, phone charging, shows up in Device Manager as HTC HD7), but the desktop Zune software often does not show it as being connected. Restarting the phone and PC generally doesn't help-- just have to wait a few days until they start syncing again.
The sync setup seems really flaky (like the earlier days of ActiveSync).

Are you using virtualisation software? It's USB arbitrator modules for forwarding devices might have messed up things. This happened over here before with VirtualBox.
Exact same problem with Win7 Ultimate x64. Device manager saw my phone but zune would not.
I did the steps above to change my phone to usb tether, rebooted, then back to zune zync, rebooted, and now the zune sees my phone.
Thanks for the help.
