Over the Air event in April - General Topics

Hi All,
I'm running a special event around mobile and wireless development in London, UK at the start of April (4th-5th).
Its called "Over the Air" and has a tag line of 48 hours of mobile development. So basically its a chance to spend a weekend learning, experimenting and hacking around with mobile and wireless devices.
I'm already expecting lots of iphone, linux, java, symbian and even adrioid hackers to turn up but whats missing is the XDA/WM community. Hence it would be great if any of you can make it and show off some of the simply stunning things your doing with HTC hardware.
The event is completely free and will take place at Imperial College in Central London, UK. We have discount hotel places for those who are coming from far and already BBC mobile, BBC Backstage, Momo Monday and Vodafone are onboard. We talking to many different companies about running sessions and sponsorship of free data simcards for the 2 days.
So I hope to see some of you there...
If you need any more information or would like to sponsor the event please contact me off list

is it open to anyone?
I know pretty much all there is to know about the devices, but next to nothing about developing, so is it more aimed at developers, or can the normal guys who love their ppc's come along?

Short answer: Yes come along
Long answer: So Over the Air is yes aimed more at the developer community because there is also a developer competition on the last day. But we are really open to people who want to learn or want to learn how to take advantage of their mobile phones or check out the latest in wireless devices. Its 2 days back to back including sleep over or over night hacking. So you may just want to come over for the day tutorials and the competition results on the 2nd day.

Anyone want to talk about Xanadux at HB Mobile meeting?

Hey everyone...
I'm trying to put together a program for some fall meetings of the Homebrew Mobile Phone Club in the SF Bay Area. (We have a pretty bad page at http://www.hbmobile.org/ for more info.) We're basically a face-to-face group that gets together to support people building their own mobile phones.
I was wondering if anyone out there familiar with the Xanadux project would like to give a presentation to our members. About 80% of the people who come to our meetings are technical, so you're *mostly* among friends. You won't have to explain why Linux is good, Open Source is good, or even why mobile phones are cool. We already know that stuff. We even understand why people would want to put non-carrier-blessed bits on their mobile phones.
To date we've been focusing on DIY hardware and software. Now that we're starting to deliver hardware designs and some application software to provide UIs and control GSM modems, I figured it would be fun to see what everyone else out there in the world is doing.
We can't offer too much more than a slice of pizza, a cola drink and an interested audience. So... if you're interested in explaining what Xanadux is all about to a bunch of SiliValley geeks, please get ahold of me at msh[at]hbmobile[dot]og
-Cheers!

HAS ANYONE SEEN new Devvy Awards ad here on XDA? (I need stats on which countries)

Hello XDA-devs ---
I'm just trying to get some kind of visible feedback about whether the new Devvy Awards banner Ad is showing up for you in the ad-rotation on the site here. There is a wide banner version, and a square version. If you've seen one at least once, could you please reply and just let me know -- it'll help a lot!
HERE'S WHY
It would help to give me an indication on where and how to spend money to increase developer awareness of the upcoming VOTING for the first (AND LAST) Devvy Awards for the Windows Mobile touchscreen Platform. These awards pay tribute to the killed-off OS that started this whole multi-billion dollar touchscreen phone & tablet industry way back when XDA-developers.com first started as a website formed to help make the HTC "XDA" a more usable phone on Windows Mobile.
XDA-developers.com has very generously donated the running of these ads for the Devvy Awards, and "we" ("we" is actually just 2 people! ) are very grateful for all the support they've given in so many ways.
Here's what the ads look like:
ADS RUN HERE IN GEOGRAPHICAL TERRITORIES OF THE WORLD
Europe, Asia, Africa, South America may all see these Devvy Awards ads more likely than those of us in the USA, due to the targeting of many ads for USA audience, and the heavy Christmas shopping season where many products are being sold. So the statistical instances of USA viewers seeing the ads is way less -- and that's where I live. So I am hoping for some tangible feedback.
They cost a lot to produce. And the purpose was simply to notify people about the upcoming voting. I intend to run the ads elsewhere, and pay for them to run. So, getting your feedback would also really help me to know if it's a good use of my depleting funds.
Right after Christmas, on Dec 27th, the Nominations Period will begin for the 5 other major Operating Systems: Android, iPhone, webOS, Blackberry, and -- though there is really not enough development to warrant it -- WindowsPhone 7. So I plan to run ads at places where developers on these OSs congregate in forums like these.
I appreciate any and all feedback. Please keep this thread bumped up so others can see it. Everything about this is Recognition for developer dedication and hard work. Thanks!

So, as of this writing, is this correct? No one on the entire site has seen either the wider banner or square banner?
...
Hmm, wonder if this is due to most users here using ad-block software so they see no ads at all. I know that is common...
Still... NO ONE at all? I'm not sure if this is true, or if those who have seen it just don't see this thread.
Topic 1 of 2:
Santa Wrecked the Devvys Site - Damn Him
SANTA MESSED UP HIS GPS USING SAMSUNG GALAXY, *TOTALLY* MISSED THE NORTH POLE, WENT ON A DRUNKEN BINGE, AND WRECKED OUR SITE, and about 150 others on his path....
So Look for Windows Mobile voting on Friday.
$%$^&# Santa! Why can't he leave working things alone? Rudolph and the reindeer have performed flawlessly all these years, but even Santa falls for the hype and gets the Nexus S --- all messed up: http://devvyawards.com
Topic 2 of 2:
THE DEVVY AWARDS BANNER ADS on this site:
So, did anyone at all, in any country, anywhere on XDA, at any time of day, at any point at all, see a Devvy Awards ad? I ask because I spent about $5000 to get them made and they took an enormous amount of time, and the whole purpose is not commercial -- but rather to alert people to the voting for Devvy Awards.
It's hard to complain since, when I inquired about the price a few months ago, XDA offered to donate the ad runs --- which is absolutely wonderful and generous. And yet, at the end of the day, if they didn't end up running at all, then that killled my entire effort, which was enormous, to make it known throughout the site about the awards, which are a day away from voting for Windows Mobile -- and then on December 31st, Nominations begin for all 5 of the major Touchscreen operating systems OTHER than windows mobile:
ANDROID
iOS
webOS
BLACKBERRY
WINDOWS PHONE 7 (though they really do not merit any awards for 2010; not enough development).
*** I am probably going to add SYMBIAN... it's getting new life via NOKIA, and they have largest market penetration of all. Any thoughts?
THOSE NOMINATIONS WILL ALL HAPPEN AT SAME TIME and in much more sophisticated way that WinMo happened here at XDA site earlier this year. They will be web form based, and specific to each touchscreen OS. We have a social media team that is going to work all the major development forums to make sure developers know about the nominations so they nominate their own works/apps. These nominations will run for 5 weeks, thus, all through month om January 2011.
thanks!

Website help

I recently started a website that will be about gaming/emulation/android/programming/and technology with a specific focus on retro/old school gaming through emulation on different platforms (ps3 3.55 was recently jailbroke with an easy method).
Anyways since I just got a shift and dived into a bunch of programming classes in college I am going to be looking into app creation (most likely gaming) in the near future and had already planned on covering apps/rooting/roms to an extent.
Just looking for some people interested in helping if you are into the same sort of hobby as me, its for fun and if the site ever begins to profit all team members will be paid (in detail payment situation for anyone interested through email.)
For the most part were just looking for people who love these types of things who wouldn't mind playing, reviewing, and classifying games. The forums are functional and have a mobile version if you visit from your phone.

March of the Droids - UK Android get together

Hi folks.
We are organising a little Android get together in the UK in March of next year. The event is aimed squarely at Android users, and we 'think' it's the only event of it's kind in the UK. It won't be anywhere near as big and fantastic as the Big Android BBQ state side, but we hope it will at least be as much fun.
We have folk coming from the Three UK media team, Tom Mleko the big cheese from Hyperbees, Tha Phlash the incredible icon designer is coming over from Canada, and HTC have stated they will get involved in some form.
The event will take place on Saturday 9th of March at the MadLab in Manchester running from mid-day to 5-6 O'clock with some snacks and drinks. Although we will be having speakers, and possibly workshop/Q & A sessions, the main focus is getting to know the wider Android community. A large number of Android blogging sites have all given their supprt, as have Clove Technology. With a little luck we will have some goodies to give away on the day as well.
If you are interested you can find out more on the website http://www.marchofthedroids.co.uk/, or comment here and I will try and answer any questions you might have.
Even better is if you can offer support/sponsorship in way as every little help is greatly appreciated.

Advice Needed

Hi forum, how's everyone doing!
I have just joined this forum today in hope that you would be able to give me some advice.
My name is Leo Santoro I am from Greater London England 24, and I am electric wheelchair bound as I have a muscle weakness disability called SMA. I have 24/7 care assistants.
Unfortunately over the past three years my disability has become worse and therefore I am unable to type apart from one hand via the iphone.
My father comes from a computer software background he learnt parts of programming language C because of the system he was using for his job was very bespoke.
He never taught me programming as a kid because my mother and father encouraged me to go out and play and not be stuck on the computer as with my disability going back 20 years doctors were not sure how long I would live.
Although growing up through school and college I aced my computer and media courses, where 2 years ago I graduated with a masters degree in digital marketing.
in this course although we learnt about marketing Apps, websites, and social media we never worked on the development of program's/apps.
Currently I find life very hard as I have been ill for a while and quite house-bound. I have all these amazing ideas for apps but do not know where I can start as having a disability makes me unable to work, therefore I have limited funding.
Sorry for the long spray of my life but I think it might help you answer my questions.
1. Is it to late to start learning an app development programming language to produce my own apps?
2. Based on the previous Q if yes … how do I start ? if no where can I put my ideas into action?
3. if everything is a no no no.. what do you all think is the best place to use my skills of digital marketing in a home-based potential job?
Cheers Leo,

Welcome to XDA leo! Honestly, making apps can be pretty easy once you have learned a little java (a little html does not hurt) here and there, i would recommend starting here http://www.codecademy.com/ once you get a little used to some of that just browse around here for some of the magnificent guides XDA has to offer!
