Cross Flash Radio - HTC Vox

I'm interested in cross flashing the radio on our S710's, it seems a few in the S730 section have been able to flash a Kaiser radio and have improved results. Here is the thread; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=352257
Anybody know another smartphone that uses the same chip for gsm that can be extracted and tested?

s730 use another radio chip - qualcomm with 3g support
so it is not compatible with s710

Ah. Thank you for responding. I guess I can put my desires to rest then.

You can try any radio from other TI OMAP850 devices (e.g. Excalibur)

HTC Universal hidden functionality possibly UNCOVERED !!

I bought the Universal a month...I have read a bit and more..I found that the MSM6250 Chip set by Qualcomm that is in the Universal is a bit more robust then we are lead to believe.....It comes manufactured as a Quad Band phone but marketed as a Triband phone, WHY ? It also supports UMTS 2100 MHz and ALSO the 1900 MHz ....But again marketed as only for the UMTS 2100Mhz in Europe ! Why ? ...I also found that it has a built in GPS receiver known as the gpsOne processor ! but marketed without mentioning this ! Why ? below are 2 interesting links that shed light on the situation....NOW, my question is.....from reading...Is that all this can be activated if you know how to mess with the "guts" of the Universal not the internal guts but the Registry, cab files, etc...Is it possible that someone here knows how to achieve this...If so...Please HELP..It would be nice to make use of the missing GSM850 band and the missing UMTS 1900 MHz !

I am very interested in your research.
Keep us updated.
Thanks
ME TOO!!!!!! Would be awesome if the UNI has GPS!!!
Waiting in anticipation.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I can't find any information supporting a GPS enabeled Universal.
Yes, it has the chipset.
Yes, it has the gpsOne processor
No, it doesn't seem to have the antenna and some other small hardware components needed..
I wish I was wrong, but I can't find any proof of the contrary..
A quote from the second link:
"The MSM6250 solution also integrates gpsOne(TM) functionality, featuring SnapTrack(R) enhancements to support assisted and standalone GPS, enabling a wide variety of location-based services and applications, including points of interest, personal navigation and friend finder."
Doesn't really state that it has GPS abilities built into the device..
Another quote:
"Also integrated into this solution are
Bluetooth(R) wireless connectivity and USB On-The-Go (OTG) host controller to
communicate directly with printers, digital cameras, keyboards and other
accessories."
Now, we know for a fact that the Universal doesn't support USB host functionality because of missing wires.
Some of the pins that should be connected, are not.
It is allso missing circuitry "fuses" for powering the USB peripherals..
The Universals chipset supports a lot of things, but the Universal does not.
And it's not just software limitations.
As for the quad VS triband issue; could it be the antennas?
Or could it be licencing issues?
Is it definately UMTS 1900? Not GSM 1900.. which is one of the settings?
:-/
I agree with Bonzo,
but with some tuning it may be possible to make gps work
More...HTC Universal "hidden" or not so hidden fun
Bonzo has stated very good points......I can only hope that through more reading and studying of these chipsets I'll be able to figure something out that is useful for all of the Universal owners.....I think that it's more of just getting the word around that the chips are packed with more than it was advertised with ! I know it seems like another "Conspiracy theory" but I am convinced that someone will be able to crack this nut... Being a newbie to all of this I am amazed at the sort of things that folks on this forum have already figured out and I'll do my best to contribute as the weeks go on ! The Universal deserves to have all of its intended functionality up and running, and Oh I'd like to have this functionality after dropping 900 bucks on it ! LOL..So far it has been great and a very interesting piece to work on !
Triband VS Quadband in the Universal
Regarding the Quad/Tri issues, I do believe that I have read something about licensing costs in the past.
The producer pays licence costs for the use of most of the technologies in a device.
This means that if every phone was Quad instead of triband, there would be a considerably larger licensing cost for HTC.
The HTC Himalaya is Dual or Tri band (I don't remember) but the hardware supports Tri or Quad band (One more than the specs claim).
To make it work on the last band, you have to flash it with a different radio stack. (Use an American Radio Stack on a European device for example)
I think that was explained by licensing costs.
If we had a genoius coder or very potent insider amongst us, it would theoretically be possible to write a new radio stack and make use of all four bands in the Universal.
Theoretically!
Just my two cents..
Good, now we are talking. perhaps a genius here can get us to access the Cingulat 1900 UMTS with a tweak of a registry or an upgraded radio. I will give $100 to anyone who can do this and make the universal a quad gsm band and dual or triband umts.
Gilbert
i'll match that $100... i just paid motin $75 to get my phone unlocked, now i'm itching for more functionality...
More on the HTC Universal hidden functionality
I have been reading the replies regarding the various suggestions that people have posted regarding the radio upgrades, licensing issues etc.....Regarding the Upgrade to the radio, I have read that an upgrade can make the voice quality more clear, reception of signal strong, etc...Are we talking about the same radio functionality (registry files, cab files, or ??? ) that would perhaps be used in the UMTS or GSM band; Because if so...I would venture to say this is where a "tweak" or "upgraded" needs to be performed ! From reading there are already some "radio upgrades" available for the Universal, Do these upgrades deal with the trasmitting/band operations, I think it this is the question to be answered.
I'm referring to the Radio Stack.
When rebooting, you'll see three ROM versions in red letters, bottom right.
The top line says something like "R 1.09" or 1.06 or something..
It is this part of the ROM that I'm referring to, allso known as RSU (Radio Stack Upgrade).
If a Universal is ever released on the Singular 1900 UMTS network, we can all use our Universals there, if we flash our ROMs first..
If not, someone will have to modify an exisiting RSU file.
I imagine that to be almost as hard as modifying your Win XP install CD files to support Mac OSX software..
In theory; it can be done..
In real life; it will require the right genious and some planets aligned..
missing power and USB on the go
Hi,
just back to the usb on the go support and lack of power..
There is a similar problem with the US iriver H300's.
Does anyone know if the data lines are there?
US iriver users have found a work around and have built cables with a 5v supply to get around the missing 5v power
Any chance this might work?, shame i found the postings a bit late as i just bought a asus wl-hdd wireless hard drive... makes a great mp3 player with tomtom voice overs though...
thanks

Hi,
Has anyone found a way to modify 3G from 2100 band to 1900 band used on Cingular 3G in the US?
Thanks,
Gilbert
Are there any news regarding the gpsOne-Functionality of the Qualcomm-chip?
For me it doesn't look like there are any hardware components missing to use this feature ... according to Qualcomm's datasheet, it really seems that it's purely firmware related.
.ox
I will also donate $100.00 for any major work...GPS, Quad Band etc...!
Youmeus
Over on the Open Embedded Software Foundation, a group of us are working on a device called the "PocketPenguin." Alot of it is based on the Universal, and on the Sharp Zaurus SL-3200. . It's sort of a hybrid between the two. Yes, it's a phone. We're trying to get Quad Band GSM and at least one UMTS network band.
Inside the Radio Rom:
The GSM Stack which includes Basic Protocols, Network Encryption (The REALLY hard part) and the serial command interface.
The same for 3G. The worst part is the fact that the Universal's Qualcomm Unit is not only connected via Serial like the BlueAngel (Hence the Plug-And-Play Phone under linux on the BA) but shares data over one of the PXA270's USB Host Ports.
So to get a new Radio ROM, you need to license a new GSM stack, a new UMTS stack, and crack the Serial/USB interface protocols that links it. Then port and code and link it all together.
$300 Ain't gonna do it.
Are you giving up?
I am willing to kick in $100 here too. But I find the thread misteriously abandoned in August with no more comments. What happened?
Hmmmmmm
I would be willing to donate $100 to this cause to get any of these functions working even though i do not have much faith. If it were possible some techie would have already come up with the solution.
I have no money left from the buy of the Universal, but I am interested in adding more strength to my cel reception so I wish someone could write a better stack, thank you.

Anyone has newer radio roms, then 1.27.12.17?

As some users, including me, have serious 3G problems, it would be great if someone who has a newer radio rom then 1.27.12.17, could dump the rom and share it with us ? I noticed that the phones from NL and/or DE have maybe newer radio roms then htc.

mmm I think you need a NBH file to extract the radio NB apart and flash with CustomRUU. I Beleave you can't extract the radio from the device (but i'm not sure...).

I am also using Radio version 1.27.12.11 on the AT&T Network in the US and I have no issues with my data connections. My phone switches between 3G and HSDPA while browsing/downloading, and my mobile speedtest is rated at 1.2mbps.
you can not dump a radio from a device sorry to say you have to have the .NBH containing it
I was having serious 3G issues in Northern Viginia. Every time my phone tried to get onto 3G, it would crash the radio. I'd lose voice and data. Edge and GPRS worked fine. Grabbed the 1.27.12.17 from ftp://xda:[email protected]/Uploads/Kaiser/Radio/KAIS_Radio_Only_1.27.12.17_CustomRUU.rar and things work great now. ~1.1mbps.
Thanks for the radio link! Appears to be working fine with AT&T in NJ, USA on my Tilt with the Helmi Kaiser 1.57.000.1 AKU.0.7.0 cooked ROM.

I noticed the "radio" in question has a lower version than i have on my tilt. I am curious if this one is actually newer and if anyone else is using it. If it is newer and others would like it to play with, i would glady dump it. I will need to find out how to dump it as i have never tried to dump one before. My device information page shows the radio version as 1.65.21.18

Opinions on Radios for US AT&T FUZE phones?

I'm using the default 25.32 radio that came with my FUZE and my reception inside my condo is worse then it was with my Tilt. I'm wondering if there are any other radios that may be better (that are worth testing) on AT&T's US network.
I've seen a few radio threads but they seem to deal mostly with networks outside of the US which isn't very helpful. The radio needs to support 3G, GPS, and AT&T based roms like NATF's ROM.
Are there any radios other then the stock radio that may be better for reception (and heck... even battery life)?
Read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=439566
All of the radios will work with AT&T, but every radio is different depending on carrier an location. Even though I have AT&T, the radio that works best where I live may not be the best for you.
If you're security unlocked (or don't mind paying the $20 to get unlocked), then you can try any of the Diamond radios or the Blackstone radio in that thread.
I've tried about 5 different radios from that thread and so far the Blackstone radio seems to have the best signal for me and the clearest calls. It gives me about 1 bar more than any other radio I've tried.
I was having connect issues, along with others. I switched to the Diamond Radio 1.09.25.23. I have a better reception and also switched to NATF's 2.1
Sorry for the newby post: checked your link first, but still asking:
Are these ROMs that replace the F/W on the "cell-phone radio" transmitter/receiver, or have something to do with the FM Tuner (FM Radio)? I assume it's the former, and if so, what's the advantage to trying the F/Ws of different carriers?
oh, and is there anyway to get around teh $20 unlock fee?

These ROMs replace the radio firmware for cell signal, wifi, bt, gps, etc, not anything with the FM tuner.
The advantage is that different radios have different settings and some work better than others for certain people. While the AT&T .32 radio was ok with me, I find the Blackstone radio better.
For the unlock fee, there's no way around it, but you don't need to be security unlocked if you use one of the HTC Raphael radios. If you want to try a Diamond or Blackstone radio, then you need to be security unlocked.
So you could try all of the Raphael radios and see which one of those works better for you.

Re: Touch Diamond / TP

Re: Touch Diamond / TP
Hi,
I am planning to get a Touch Diamond or Touch Pro next month (depends on the price ). I had posted a query in the TD section, but did not get any reply . My query is:
In most of the countries both of these sets are 3G enabled, but in India they are not. So if I get one of the two sets mentioned, can I flash any ROM / Radio available in the respective forum, or do I need to take some special precautions.
Thanks.
P.S. Some reply please
Im no expert, but from what I know as long as you flash a GSM rom everything should be fine.

But radio ? Think that should be different (3G vs 2G)!
3G is related to hardware so not even flashing another ROM and radio will activate it.
Check the frequencies used in India vs. the ones on the devices you want to buy, anyway if you buy it it will work perfectly on EDGE.

What radio to use

Hiya peeps well i am new at this so am not a out blown expert i did a lot of research and i could not find some answer to some wanted question on radio and stuff like that now where i should start
ok i had my treo 750 to att 2.25 and wm 6.1 and i wanted it unbranded to 2.27 so i followed the instruction and i tried to do the radio up date using cheetah but i most have did something not right, for this part i got one question
using a sim card in the network setting for band should it work on auto or its normal that i need to specified what band am using? or i did something to my radio? (and not talking what tower it should connect to that automatic am talking between gsm and umts since am on telus that uses bell/telus shared tower that on UMTS 850 / UMTS 1900 network code of 302880 since i did that at lease it said the right provider and its no longer disconnecting me or saying no service)
if i update my radio should i use from this site?
www crc.id.au/files/xda/Radio_Roms
if yes what version that is safely work with unbranded 2.27 and wm 6.1
if no then where i can find the right radio rom i can grab for my treo 750 and instruction how to install it lol
am trying to understand how the phone should be setup while using a sim card without any disconnection by the phone also gime ability of roaming as well since i like my phone to be able too for future use
anyway thanks for reading and really do hope someone reply
also P.S: about the roaming icon any solution to that?
When you flash an OS ROM, it doesn't change the radio ROM. You have to flash it seperately.
I would suggest you only use the most recent radio ROM for your provider.
I have used 1.54.07 and 1.54.27 on my AT&T Treo 750 with success.
The Treo uses Hermes ROM's ... here is the repository.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_ExtractedRadioRoms
Do not install 1.54.30.10 ... it's not a great radio from many accounts and once flashed, you will be stuck with it. You can't flash a new radio over the top of it.
ok now the radio is updated and it work i used the 1.54.07.00 so now am happy for that part but i got 1 more treo 750 i could not updated the radio due to there spl is 0.25 then 1.40 like my main one i normally test on them other treo so if they turn into a brick i would not care lol
is there a way to update a bootloader or i miss something somewhere?
Sounds like you need to Hard SPL the second phone.
well that what am trying to do when i do try with the hard spl v7 it does not work it goes blank so am trying to see if i can find a bootloader that 1.40 so i can so the same thing on the second phone to test radios and other kinky stuff
also on the side spot i notice that my phone fails to auto detect its band and the only way i can make it work is to select the right band for my provider is it coz i didn;t completely unlock my radio or i did something that bad? or re-flash the phone?
Anyone tried the 1.48 Radio ROM. Some are claiming better battery life than the 1.54.

I wasn't aware there was a v7 to Hard SPL, I just used the version in the first post of the HardSPL sticky here in the Treo 750 forum. It's worked on both Treo's I have tried it on. I would say re-download and re-format the SD card and try again?
As for having to select bands on your phone, my guess is whatever ROM you have flashed might not have the carrier information for your provider included, or your radio might not support the proper bands. Telus doesn't use the same 3G bands as AT&T, but Rogers does. Depending on which version of the phone you have, that could be the issue.

I tried it on AT&T and both the 1.54.07 and 1.54.27 ROMS were far better in terms of reception for me. Can't remember on the battery life since it's been awhile, but have to believe at the time if it was an issue I would have made the change back.

Okay - mine has 1.54.27 on it so I'll leave well enough alone. I just got this off of eBay (non camera version so I can take it to certain places at work) so I'm not sure what to expect for performance. The orginal battery lasted about 1/2 day so I just got a new OEM original battery and still burning it in.
Thanks for the tip.

I've always been able to get through the day without issue, but can't say I'm a heavy user.
The stock battery is 1200mAh, but Innocell makes a 1600 mAh battery that fits in the OEM space if you need more juice.

It's likely not the OS ROM causing it. Assuming you have other phones that lock onto a signal properly in the same locations, then it's probably the radio ROM. However, if the Treo in question was not originally sold for your carrier (which I assume is Telus) then it's possible that the phone is trying to find a frequency for 3G that is not supported by Telus. For example, AT&T shares the same 3G frequencies with Rogers, which are different from Telus'. If you have a Rogers or AT&T version of the Treo, you would probably be better off just locking the phone down to GSM only.
As for finding the proper radio, you would need to try to find any Telus radio ROM that you can. Have no idea what that would be, or where to find it. If you have the original WM5 or WM6 official Telus installer package it would likely be included there. Otherwise you are just going to have to scour the net in seach of it.
Hmm, in my tests it is the OS that handles the Band selection only, what bands the Treo supports is up to the Radio firmware. You can flash a radio that, say, doesn't support UMTS 850, and yet it's possible to write a code to have it selectable.
And a word of advice. If you flash any of those Hermes ROM's, there's no taking it out. No overwriting. So, say if your wireless carrier upgrades their network like mine did, there's no going back to any of the suitable Radios that you can find.
And, just to be helpful, I'll write down which Official Treo Radio can be found in where(the ones I have):
CNG 1.16 (Cingular WM5) with Radio 1.12c [no HSDPA enabled by default]
VFU/VFE 2.18 (Vodafone UK and EU WM6) 2.18 with radio 1.47.02.00 [fast HSPDA on UMTS 2100 band]
H3E 2.19 (H3E Australia WM6) with radio 1.52.30.00 [no GSM locking, AUS band]
ROW 2.23 (WWE Generic WM6) with radio 1.54.00.00 [equal performance on all bands]
ATT/CNG 2.25 (AT&T WM6) with radio 1.54.27.00[Optimized for 1900/850 UMTS bands]
TEL 2.26 (Telstra WM6) with radio 1.54.31.00 [Extra band locking to single UMTS band (850)]
ROG/ROW 2.27 (Rogers and WWE WM6) with radio 1.54.01.00 [Slight performance increase over ROW 2.23]
VFE 2.30 (Vodafone New Zealand WM6) with radio 1.54.02.00 [bug fixes and improvements over ROG/ROW 2.27]
All personally flashed and extensively tested by me on two wireless carriers testing all bands.

I guess we have different experiences then. I have had improvements in my phone locking onto a signal by changing radio ROMs without changing the OS ROM. I also have also used several of the Hermes radio ROM's and have been able to flash new radios without issue. The only exception I have ever seen is the 1.54.30.10 ROM which was widely reported to be impossible to flash over once installed (which for that reason I never tried).
I took from the OP that he was having trouble with his phone locking onto a signal and it was showing up as roaming a lot. I guess my thought was that perhaps he had a phone that wasn't originally sold for his network and it was trying to lock onto a band his carrier didn't support. Logically it seems like that might cause his problem, but I'm not well versed enough to know for sure.
As I mentioned, I am on AT&T and am using the 1.54.27 radio you report. It's the best of the radio ROMs I have tried. The Hermes 1.54.07 was the second best I tried. Thanks for the list, I'm sure it will help a lot of people. Of course you will now start getting requests to post them ...
Heh, when I said it's the OS that controls th selection, I mean just that, basically the drop-down menu in Band Selection. I too know that one can flash new radio's without changing OS's (you don't even have to Clear Data to use the new radio, just edit your choice of Data Connection setting, save, and your phone will automatically re-list your internet setup for use), and that's the thing. The OS will retain the Drop-down menu selection of bands, as it is tied to the OS (or both .pxp packages), an example is several tests I tried, for example the H3E ROM, does not have a selection for "GSM only" in the network type list. Say, if you flashed the ATT radio only then it will still retain the lack of GSM, because it is tied to the OS.
And yeah, I'm sure there would be at least one request. The problem is, I lost my source of instructions for ripping the Radio Firmware from the .nbh files and I do not want people having bricked Treo's all because I didn't follow instructions [I don't have]. Other course of action is to share th ROM itself, but that's large and I don't have an always on connection (this here Treo is my only source for internet, tether and built-in browser)
By the way, there are a lot of others who could not flash over other Hermes Radios, not that .10 one. I myself have 2 AT&T Treo's, and I flashed radio 1.50.00.00 and it remained no matter what I used to flash over it. I eventually gave away that half past dead Treo :/
well it used to be on auto with my telus card and it works on 3g network, the problem happend when i updated my treo 750 to 2.27 from 2.25 with wm6.1 am starting to think i mightn eed to reflash the rom it self
ok my wife as a fido sim card indeed i think its telus sim card the problem i have to use selective band it didn't needed that before i turn the phone from 2.25 ATT to 2.27 rwe the fido card work with the last radio version and i finally updated the bootloader
telus work with selective band >.>
