WMV Movie Files - General Topics

what other players are available for the pocket pc that will play .wmv files?
please advise!
thank you,
tvos

CorePlayer is, in my opinion, the best. They just came out with a new release and have another release set for 2/21/08 that should make video playback even better. I use it now with movies I have converted and it works very well.

Hi
I advice to you these two great universal players:
1) Tcpmp, freeware, last beta version here (with all codecs already included, if i well remember, and with subtitle support!), or the last stable one (and no more officially developed) here where do you need all the other codecs (most of that in the same page, and if you'll get wmv/wma problem look here )
2) CorePlayer, not free, (that directly derive from the first one, for this official Tcpmp not more developed), info here !
Ciao

all my movies are in .wmv format - do i have to convert them to .mpg, .avi to watch or can these players read and play .wmv?
please advise.
tvos

CorePlayer can play WMV videos quite well.

Tcpmp can play .wmv/.wma files and you don't need to convert, too!
...but just install the right plugin, look to the link posted above!

...Tcpmp wmv/wma files tested and work!!
...I tested it and works fine on my Kaiser!
follow these steps:
1) Install the Tcpmp, latest release
2) Download these set of files: 3 .dlls, copy these into the tcpmp install folder and you'll get full wma/wmv/wmv9 support
3) Than, for better performances try these Tcpmp settings (or manage by yourself, to find the best settings for you):
(a) Options -> Video -> Video Driver: GDI (or Raw Framebuffer); not DirectDraw. Uncheck "Dither"
(b) Options -> Video -> Quality -> "Low" or "Normal"
(c) Options -> Pixel Aspect Ratio: set to "Auto"
(d) Options -> Settings -> Advanced -> Check "Slow Video Memory"
(e) Options -> Settings -> Buffering -> Change "Preload at Underrun" to 85% (or little more)
(f) Options -> uncheck "Repeat"
(g) Options -> uncheck "Shuffle"
(h) Restart Tcpmp
...tips:
1) for big/long .wmv files try, on first load, to put the cursor, on the loading bar, to the middle or end, wait many seconds (so it buffers), than restart your file!!
2) be sure to close all applications running in background.
...done
Enjoy it!

thanx for the info. and support on this issue.
just out of curiosity? why is it that windows media is choppy and tcpmp/coreplayer works fine?
tvos

I had the same issues of "chopiness and lag" using Pocket Player to play WMV files. I concluded the WMV format is not suitable for mobile applications since I recoded my video files in MP4 (using Nero) and now they all play fine.Anyway, just another option.

.... .wmv suck

no one said that .wmv is the best codec format, rather i think it's in absolute the worse, and, personally, the faster one (expecially for my Kaiser) is the .3gp format, even though in quality isn't comparable to .avi and .mp4 (and i inform you that Kaiser is very bad in video performances anyway!!) ! I only said that these players can load the windows media files just fine, meaning, without problems!! and in absolute i can confirm to you that it lags, but on my device lag .avi and .mp4 too (with medium/big video bitrates!) , only .3gp works fluid!!!
Ciao

so far I switched to tcpmp and it works flawless and smooth. no problems. video could be a little better, but thats expected since the file size ranges from 250mb-512mb compressed.

AVI (DivX) Play on MDA3?

Hi guys
I've read a few similar requestes from others regarding playing .avi files on XDA/MDA pocket PC.
I have quite a few full length films in .avi format, abot 700mb each.
What software can I use to play these on my MDA3? I have a 1Gig SD card so shouldn't be a problem storing them.
I tried RealPlayer for pocket PC but that wouldn't play them. I have seen mention of BetaPlayer. Did a search for that and found 1000's of hits but none I downloaded would install!!!
Any help appreciated
John
i never had any problems with beta player
http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=1080
make sure it's arm / xcale you get
I'm using v0.04 and find it very good. I use the vidx codec for encoding rather than divx - should be in nemo codec pack. Though you might have problems playing AVIs intended for the desktop - I encode the AVIs for PPC with a max res at 320x240. Though to be honest I don't think I've tried to play desktop AVIs on my PPC.
Cheers guys,
I can get to the site http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=1080 no problem BUT when I click <Download ( ARM/XSCALE )> I get a message saying hang on 3 seconds and you'll be redirected but it never happens!
It may be a problem my end as I have noticed some problems acting some sites.
I'll search for it elsewhere.
Thanks
John
Attached is v0.04 that I downloaded a while back
I convert them to WMV using Windows Media Encoder (free download from Windows Media area of MS Website) and just play them in WMPlayer on PPC.
Done a 300Mb AVI the other day, using the Pocket PC defaults option in WM Encoder, just changed the output resolution to 320x240 (XDAIIs Widescreen) and it compressed down to about 40Mb.
Perfect picture quality and Audio.
Thanks for the replies guys
How long did it take to re-encode the file down to 40Mb?
John
About 1hr, although this was on a not over powerful IBM laptop (P3 1Ghz 512mb ram)
I'm sure this would be cut down drastically on a decent desktop as the WMVEncoder seems to be quite CPU hungry

Your movies really shouldn't be that big.
Convert them to the right resolution for your PDA using Pocket DivX Player.
Perhaps they'll come to about 200MB.
Anyone can tell me which one is the best for us in term of file size, video and audio quality for PocketPC (especially O2 XDA II mini) device before I convert all my DVD to .mpg or to .wmf.
Thank you in advance
Arto.
Cheers again,
Yup, I did compress my avi files and ended up with just unde 200mb providing good quality when viewd on the MDA.
The conversion was quite quick - about 30mins or so, I was thinking it might have been an overnight job!

TCMP and youtube - flv plugin

i didn't see anyone posting this before - i just found out about this plugin, i tried it and it works! for all of you who are tired of converting flv to avi in order to watch it on your ppc, theres a solution. it also comes with utilities to ease the downloading of video from youtube.com, i tried, also works a charm. good luck, and thanks to the creators!
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=196939
I don't able to play the video:
I put the 3 files in the tcmp folder (in sd card)
I don't able to play the video on the you-tube page
and I don't able to play the video flv (downloaded by youtubedownload.exe) on the player
I run O.72 version with the plugin of 0.81
How you get it successfully?
thanks
Enough only to put the two files .flv in the root TCPMP.
With the others files you are able to download the tape directly on ppc, enough to launch YouTube Download on device..

you mean .plg files i assume. but right, that's what you should do. then also you can edit options>preferences>file associations in tcpmp so then you can launch tcpmp doubleclicking flv file (it is called flash video in options)
uvz: i don't know what's wrong - it works with tcpmp v. 0.71 - my plugin version is 0.2, have no idea how can i help :/
ok, I found the reason..
The 3 files I downloaded was all exe file (??)
I download the zip folder in other place and I found the correctly .plg files.
So now I can play the video on tcpmp, by downloading with the exe.
But I'm not able to stream video directly from you-tube page: it's normal?
I can only download the video and then play with tcpmp, or there are a possibility to open and play directly from the you-tube page by streaming with tcpmp?
Finnaly... I'm now able to play .flv files... horray!!!
I've copied the flv plugin to the TCMP folder and I think they're correctly installed. However when playing youtube vids, it connects to HTC Streaming Media which unfortunately doesn't run vids on my Kaisser.
Do I have to remove streaming Media so that youtube would connect to TCMP when vids are selected? How can I select streaming media into my TCMP?
Would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.
TCPMP streaming problems with WM6
I have an HTC touch cruise with wm6 and I am unable to stream flv files.
I have installed the TCPMP program and I think I installed tcpmp plugin 0.4.2.
When I install the plug in, do the files automatically install themselves in the TCPMP root file??? and how are they identified.
It shows in my settings/system/Remove programs , the TCPMP and TCPMP plugin are both installed Could some one please post step by step install instruction or direct me to one .
Thanks

Best player around !
I have just downloaded it and tried it but no joy.
I used the Youtube link on the player and I can see the list of video categories (most viewed, rated, discussed etc) and when I click on one to play it shows the video details and a thumbnail with a small play icon in it. I click this, coreplayer goes to play it but the animated circle just keeps going around and around on the black player screen.
I specifically tried a short video of only about a minute and waited for over a minute and still nothing.
Is there something I've missed?
I've just tried and did exactly what you did and Core Player played the video I choose.
Have you tried with several videos? Maybe it was a problem with the video you choose?
@+
1. Check associations for coreplayer (RTP, RTSP Protocols)
EDIT - 2. On the Network page 'Network Access Enabled' and 'Prefer UDP streaming' have to enabled
3. Whith your favourite browser visit the mobile site of youtube, and search out your video.
4. On the video deatils page, click 'Watch Video'
5. Coreplayer should start immediately and start puffering the stream (the playlist icon on the lower right turns red)
6. After a few secs of puffering the video should start
If the puffer is too small you can adjust it size and also enable the 'Micro drive Mode'.
Got it to work through Coreplayer and youtube link by changing to H264. By the way in File Associations of Coreplayer is it better to have Select All ticked?
Gnick666 tried your suggestion through a browser but tries to use Stream Media program and not coreplayer. How do I make Coreplayer the default player or disable Stream media?
Thanks everyone for your help.
If the 2 associations I mentioned earlier are ticked, the CorePlayer should take over all streaming links.
It's not necessearly better to have all item ticked, because some ppl don't want to play their mp3 files in whith coreplayer.

On2 VP6 codec and Adobe Flash question

Hi, I have two questions:
Firstly, I've been trying to play flv files that need the on2 VP6 codec using Coreplayer but apparently their site says it is not supported.
Are there any codecs available that can or any player? I used mplayer downloaded from this site that does play the file but is jerky and audio is out sync.
Secondly, I use miniopera as my default browser and I am an avid facebook user. The Facebook site keeps telling me that I need Adobe flash installed. I have installed flash7 but it still tells me i need to install it.
(Snap2face application works great but its not the same being on the website!)
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
flash plugins only work for ie as of yet. That being said, either visit facebook mobile using ie, or get the opera mobile 9.5 available on opera's site, and visit the full fledged facebook.
Sorry I should have mentioned, itdoes the same in ie and opera 9.5 (didnt like 9.5 too many glitchy graphics!?!).
Same question here. Is there a solution to use opera and play flash. And is it possible to play a flv with on2 vp6 codec on core player. (you know flash movies for those lonely nights)
Coreplayer says On2 VP6 is not supported and I havent found anywhere any codec or program that supports it. I had some luck with mplayer playing them but its jerky at best, though I have noticed slight improvements after loading the Omnio drivers and if I play a flv file after soft resetting the voice sync isnt that bad.
Funnily mplayer is the only one that shows any video. All the others just give me sound only.
Flash works with the newest build of Opera 9.5 , Build 1938!
The flash you need can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=423860
After installing Flash, you have to soft reset the phone! It WON'T work with Opera mini!!!
I'm using a Polaris with WM 6.0 and have no problems viewing youtube videos, or youp*rn / redt*be.... i can also play some flash games online!

Doesnt work for me on UDK's 6.1 rom - even tried a hard reset, its got the latest opera on it but it still says i have an older version of flash on youtube videos.
Oh well.. maybe it works only on 6.0?
Just read the small print "you must remove all previous versions of flash" apparently if its cooked into the rom like udk's it wont work, unless someone know a workaround?
Ok, but how to remove all the version of flash pls ???
In Settings => system => Add/Remove Programs
i dont find any FLASH programm...?
Any luck with the On2 VP6 codec? I'm in the same boat as you...

There is a thread regarding the TCPMP GF5500, I ever try it and those FLV files with On2 VP6 format can be play without any problem.

Can try to download it, but the forum is in Chinese language. Can use google to translate it.
U can try this patch for TCPMP.
I've tested it on WM6.1. It worked but was a little jerky on my Touch Cruise.
Rename the att. to .cab. and run it on ur mobile.

I copied the flv files out my browser cache and imported them into Kino on Ubuntu 9.04. I then exported them as MPEG-2.
Then I used VLC to build the FFMPEG command to "Convert" the MPEG-2 to an MP4/AAC file. I had to manually set the scale to a different value as Android's video player won't play anything bigger than 320x256(-ish). Whatever file you want to play, you need to scale it down to 320x240 at most. You need to have the "unstripped" FFMPEG files / libraries installed as the ones shipped with Ubuntu are fairly limited for legal reasons. Have a look here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1117283
Ok, it's not playing native On2 VP6....but the processor required to play those might see them looking pretty bad even if you can decode them. Converting the files to mp4/aac produces a compatible file....and they play very well.

You can use the "Ultra Video Convertor" to convert the VP6 to a AVI.
The video quality on WM was real crisp..

Save in a different video format?

I absolutely hate that the phone saves video's in ".mp4" and have some weird sort of "amr" audio codec involved? I can view these video's just fine on the phone, but if I pull them over to my computer, they play without sound. I have tried VLC, Quicktime, WMP, etc.
Now, I can rename the file extension to ".3gp" and it plays without any problems in Quicktime. But if I try to play it in VLC with the pre-defined extension, it says it doesn't have "SAMR" support, and only plays the video. I Googled it, found out all the reasons why (proprietary), and why it wouldn't ever be supported in VLC.
But is there any way to change the format the phone saves it in? It would be nice to able to send these video's from your phone to a friend and know that they could view it just fine.
I looked in Settings under the Camera....and nada.
Thanks!
DTB
From the video camera screen, go to Menu/Advanced/Capture Format and change it to H.263.
You are correct about changing the .mp4 extension to .3gp to allow it to play in Quicktime. But you should be able to play H.263 files on your computer without any changes.
I left mine in .mp4 and just downloaded the Klite codec pack, which lets you play .mp4 videos in classic win media on your laptop/PC. Works well on my laptop. Just make sure you choose custom install and deselect all the video options except for mp4 format. Otherwise it will conflict with other existing codecs such as divx.
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/KLite_Codec_Pack_Standard/1094057842/2
Absolutely agree with Klite. All the time I install Windows,I don't use anything else than Klite codec pack in combination with very old(but really rocking) player ViPlay on all PCs/Ntbs in my surround. I can play almost everything without any problem.

Thank you, that worked. I had to actually make sure I was in video mode FIRST, then go to settings and the option to change the format was there.
Thank you!
And to others, I'm not complaining about not being able to watch the video on my own soo much...but I'd like to know that I could send the video out to friends and have a higher success rate in them being able to play the video.
