HTCHomePlug and task manager app for 750? - Palm Treo 750

Afternoon everyone. I'm a long time HTC Hermes user but have always missed the one-hand of my old Treo 650. So yesterday I picked up a used 750 ($150 not bad). It had WM5 on it so I promptly upgraded it to WM6 with the stock ATT rom.
What I didn't realize is that everything that ran on my Hermes isn't going to run on my Treo. I have two big irritations that I hope someone can clear up for me.
First is with the HTC Home Plugin. The plugin installs and runs fine (along with the HTCCustomize). However its the problem is with the Today screen item called Dialpad Lookup. If I uncheck this item then I lose button functionality, for example hitting the red button to lock and turn off the screen. The only thing I have seen for this is some registry tweaks to let you move the Dialpad Lookup up or down. Any ideas what to do about this?
Second is there is no Task Manager / X to Close instead of Hide program. I tried to install HTC Task Manager a couple times and each time had to Hard reset to defaults. I also tried SPB Pocket Plus, which is what I used on my Hermes, and every time that resulted in neverending lockups and hard resets.
What app are you using to make the X a close (OK button to minimize) and to Task Manage?
Thanks!

I use SPB Pocket Plus on Treo 750v WM6 without any problem...sorry, not much help.

Hey d00d,
Just got my Treo and been playing with it a bit.
As for HTC Home i use and recommend Touch Commander which simulate the Home Screen and adds some HTC cube capabilities. it's nice though it costs money.
As for the Dial Lookup issue, What i did is Hide the Lookup (Menu --- Preferences --- Hide Lookup field) BUT you have to leave the dial lookup plugin enabled on the today Settings.
Now you will have the Red Button feature without the lookup field on the today screen.
Last thing regarding the task manager, i use tman - the best i've used so far.
You may also like Task Manager in Battery Status plugin - good as well
Hope i helped

qbout task manager
I used magic button and it is free and I think that it is the best.

task manager
I use the 1.5 version of vp3g x button which works on my wife treo. and I have oxios to keep it clean, I however haven't managed to get the htc home going like the one on my hermes

Try WKTask
I've tried all kinds of task managers over the last couple of years that I've had my 750 and the best one I've found is called WKTask. I highly recommend it because not only does it give the X in the corner, but it also gives you the equivalent of a task tray across the top of the screen which allows you to quickly switch from one application to another. It also has a nifty launcher utility. Go to the site and check it out:
http://soft.photoracer.net/docs/wktask_en.html
I am in no way associated or affiliated with the product, I just really dig it and it's free too. It may seem a little complicated at first, but it's easier than you think and worth the effort to learn the capabilities.

If you upgrade to WM6.1 it finally includes a task manager and all you have to do is hold down the "ok" button and the task manager appears.

The task manager is included since WM5 and if I remember it correct since WM2003, new is that it is available from the ok-button (I think this is palm-specific).
I use wisbar lite, not free, but easy to use and also with the buttons of all apps on top and You can configure it to close every app with the "X" instead of minimizing it.

I'm glad it works on square screen, because it's truly the most important utility on my TyTN.

Exit/ending programs in Windows mobile.

Is it just me, or is it not a bit tedious to actually terminate a program?
I would suggest adding a minimize-icon to the upper right besides the X-icon. Then the minimize would do what the X does today, and the X-icon would actually truly terminate the program. This would be much more inline with desktop program-use, and to me more logical.
Alternatively the X-icon would offer minimizing or termination when holding the icon. That would be even sweeter maybe...
I'm new to the pocket/smartphone PC thing as of yesterday, but this already bugs me a bit. And I realize this might be daunting task, but it could also be a quite easy fix. But again, I know little of the Windows mobil system.

Most people use a task manager, my favourite is a piece of freeware called Magic Button. Google for it and you should be able to download it, it basically allows you to close applications properly rather than minimise them when you press the x button.

smartskey (spelled the way i wrote it) is the best app for this as it remaps the softkeys and truly closes the app. do a search for it here. everyone swears by it.
some programs go loco if they get terminated
mw programs was never really ment to be terminated
the os kill them when it wants to free memory
guess they made it that way to speed up things
outlook if terminated right when you send and sms get upset
and act up and piles of ppl report it as an bug in this forum
I actually installed the first suggested. Seems to do the right thing, but are a bit unstable. Have had a few issues with it, but I'm getting used to work it as it expect to be rather than using it's "undocumented features"...

If you get it to keep messaging, activesync, and the phone applications alive, and tick in the options to hide when inactive, it works perfectly AFAIK.

i use handyswitcher, is very cool and you can specify the tasks that you do not wanna terminate when you close all like activesync

A good task manager for Windows Mobile 6?

I used to use Magic Button with Windows Mobile 5 on my HTC Universal. Now it doesn't work on Windows Mobile 6.
So.. which task manager shall I use?
Give a shot to dinarsoft handyswitcher(not freeware, but, just $5)
Just An Advise
Who ever using Helmi ROM please don't use HTC X-Button, it causes the freezes and also when you tap the time, no ballon will appear to indicate the date, time and today's appintment. That's what i have observed.
Depends on what you prefer. Best advice is to just try them all out and see what works for your taste.
pbar
Magic Button (Doesnt really display/work correctly with WM6)
Handiswitcher
SPB pocket plus comes with a task manager
iLauncher comes with a task manager
Cant think of anymore, but I',m pretty sure theres others
I'm think the HandySwitcher is now best solution for WM6.
gspocketmagic
it works well with wm6
and I like the way you can break items in menu

I use iLauncher as a replacement for Magic Button - works a treat.
Cheers,
Steve.
Magic Button works great on my WM6.
I prefer the SBP Pocket+ Task manager.
I configured a hard (soft) button to switch between the taks.
It's sad Microsoft can't build something like this in. How hard would it be to integrate something like Magic Button into the OS? Lazy Microsoft developers if you ask me.

Spb Software Question?

Hello, After trying out some of the Spb software I want to purchase some of the applications, however I have some questions first.
This are the applications I want to get:
GPRS Monitor
FS Keyboard.
Phone Suite
Mobile Shell
Time
Weather
Pocket Plus
Now the thing is some of these applications overlap, and provide the same or very similar functions.
For example, Pocket Plus, Mobile Shell, and Phone Suite.
In pocket plus I only use the Close button alteration to be able to configure behavior depending on application.
So buying the entire Suite seems silly.
On Mobile Shell I use the Application Launcher and Photo Dialer.
I want to get the Weather and Time application seperatly, so will not use the built in function.
Although I do use the integration of them to have them on the tab, So to see current weather on the Tab.
Last is the Phone suite, on that I use everything except the Photo Dialer since it is built in to Mobile Shell.
But as far as I can see it, buying the pocket Plus and the Mobile shell, seams silly both in terms of Memory usage and Price, when I only use 1 or 2 features of it.
For example I could drop Pocket Plus, if some other application provides the Close button alteration.
Click to Close, Gesture to minimize, and Click and hold for advanced options/Application Switching, and individual settings for applications.
I could use the Phone suite Photo Dialer, but I still use the Tabs from Mobile Shell to integrate Application Launcher/Battery indicator, Time and weather.
I really don't like the type of tabs Pocket plus gives, I like much better the way Mobile Shell does it, with auto hiding and Icons.
Well do you guys have some nice suggestions?
Regards.
Brian.
Well off the top of my heap I can't think of any applications apart from Pocket Plus that offers the close button alterations to the level that you are talking so it’s a very hard one, it's just whether you are willing to pay the extra for a few more features which will make your device extra user friendly. I will see if I can find anything else, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
Well, that feature of SPB plus is really nice.
I have some experience in programming in VB, but never for Pocket PC, so was thinking about making one my self if none exists.
But then again I have not used Windows on my Desktop since Windows XP SP2 came out.
And I'm not sure if it is possible to develop Pocket PC applications on Linux.
But I keep my hope up that someone out there has already made an alternative.
I find it really strange that for so long, MS has not implemented it them self, I really sometime wonder if they even use Windows Mobile them self.

Is the HTC X-button app which does the close function correctly. Comes as standard on the Artermis and a few others, but HTC have released this as a seperate app.
Hope this save you some cash as it is also free !
I know the HTC app, However it is far from Advanced enough.
The HTC app changes so that when using the button it closes app instead of hiding.
you can also configure that it closes when push and hold and minimize when only short tap.
However the Spb hack makes it much more advanced.
Tap=Close.
Drag down=Minimize.
Push and Hold=Open a menu to choose what to do (including swithing between applications.
Additionaly it has a very nice feature where you can tell it to always minimize certain applications, instead of closing them.
I use this for Messenger, Core Player and Skype.
Very handy.
Version 1.5 of X-button does all that, you set it up so that you get;
tap = minimize
tap & Hold = Close
Menu on today screen allows for task switching and closing of apps without going into them.
Settings allow for identifying applications which are excluded from x-button.
Also check out the new Version of HTC Home. I used spb mobile shell and phone suite and weather, now I just use this one application, with considerably less of a memory footprint. This is also Free.
Spb software used to be great, but they are lagging behind now in my opinion, and need to stop charging for multiple applications that do overlapping tasks.
HTC Home here
X-Button 1.5 here
Thanks, I will try and have a look at them.
Btw, the link for HTC Home did not work, but found it by doing a search.

SPB Phone Suite has two major advantages to me: 1. Phone Profiles (switch to vibration while on the meeting and at night) and 2. Photo Dialer.
It does not seem like HTC Home plugin covers those areas.
I wonder if there is another app which can possibly do these two native phone functions better than SPB Phone Suite. So far I don't see alternatives
Well, after some searching I found Photo Contacts PRO 5 http://www.pocketx.net/products/photocontactspro_ppc/index.html but somehow I don't like how it looks. And also it takes too much space of my Today screen which I don't like. Probably I'm going to keep SPB Phone Suite.

Hmmm, think you should look again, my HTC Home has a home tab, with the clock and missed messages / calls indicators/ buttons, a favourite person tab with space for 9 photo contacts, a weather tab, an application launcher tab, and a phone profile tab with selectable profiles of normal- silent - vibrate only- and automatic (vibrate in meetings)
OK, So I tried t install HTC Home and the HTC X-Button 1.5.
Well the Home plug-in looks very nice!, unfortunatly my device slow with this version.
My rom already has the HTC TaskManager v1.5 which, from as far as I can see on screenshots, have the same functionality as the X-Button 1.5.
But I can't find anywhere to set individual application preferences, and also not the minimize on geasture thing.
But in lack of other, For now, I will proably go with the HTC Taskmanager.
Together with Spb Phone suite and Spb Mobile Shell, at least there is discount when buying multiple products.
Thanks for the advice guys.

HTC-specific Applications on non-HTC Phones?

Hi there!
I was last week a Kaiser owner, but the phone gave me the ****s, and thus I sold it
Now, I am a very happy owner of an LG KS20. This phone is beautiful, smart, and very fast! No touchscreen bug is great!
Now, my issue is this. I'm so used to some HTC apps, I took them for granted, and now they don't work on the LG KS20!
* HTC Enlarge Start Menu
* Connection Wizard
* HTC Album [not sure, will this one work]
As well as a few others.
What to do?
I've got the HTC X-Button installed now, and it's working alright as a task manager
But, the Enlarge Start Menu is a real great one, and it won't work will it
Connection Wizard: This phone is unbranded, I'm with Three in Australia, and I can't set up the MMS/Planet 3 connections. Connection Wizard runs, soft-resets my phone... but nothing is changed! So I had to uninstall it
Any ideas?
[On an unrelated note: I'm looking for any emulators that can be run in landscape mode, using the joystick as the directions, and an on-screen buttons. Any ideas on what will? Will Picodrive do that by chance?]
Thanks!
Nothing? Would really like to enlarge the start menu. Then this phone would be perfect [once I've got GAPI support going that is ]
Given the lack of responses I don't think this is possible. Probably one of the reasons this forum does NOT support none HTC manufactured devices.

Dave
I figured as much.
It's a shame. HTC have some nice additions to Windows Mobile.
*shrugs
it works. it is installed as a service and configured to autostart.
it is just that on non HTC devices, they still don't autostart.
get the great and free Taskmgr by FdcSoft, go to the services tab, select the enlarge startmenu service and hit the "Run" button on the bottom. need to do this again after a softreset.

My New TP2 Annoyances

Good Morning All,
I've now had over a week with my Touch Pro 2. I like it in several ways and hate it in several others.
Videos, YouTube/etc look absolutely phenomenal...this looks like hdtv, the iphone looks like fuzzy pixelated sdtv...(the gf has an iphone)
maybe its that i get much better bandwidth on sprint compared to at&t, i dunno don't care...
I welcome that larger battery!!
I hate the functionality of the quick menu. In my TP(1), I used this heavily as it always showed the running applications. In my TP2, I barely see anything listed in there, especially running web browsers, I have to click on Internet/Launch Browser to get back to my running Browser.
I also haven't found a good copy of the HTC Wifi Router-Comm Manager combo application. But, I have found versions of the OTHER mobile wifi router on another ppc forum website.
I have other gripes, but I figured I'd start with these and see what others suggest. I always meant to install a new rom on my TP(1) and never got around to it. Maybe there's a rom that'll fit me better that others can suggest.
Paul
Everything "might change" once the "oft spoken off but never seen" update to 6.5.x comes from Sprint.
Depending on what market you're in the bandwidth might be reason.
I use WMWiFiRouter to share/tether my connection without issue. I've been using that since my Mogul (never had the TP).
You could use the FTC Task Manager to see everything running but that wouldn't solve your request to easily switch. The Task Manager on my Mogul was better so I agree with you on the TP2 one not being as good.
What other gripes do you have (I bet one of them is the CM_Guardian_Service)?

Sprint defaults the "X" to close (rather than suspend). Thusly you'll never see anything in your quick menu if you always tap "X" to close a window. Go into the options and change it to the older default (tap to close the window not the program) and the quick menu will behave as you remember.
Search for "CM Internet Sharing".
Thanks for the tips guys!
I'll try the Tap X to.... in a few moments...
Yea I can't wait to try 6.5.X
My Boss has the Vz TP2 and I'm itchin' to do his upgrade just to see what changes there are.
I Hope sprint doesn't drop the ball on this.
Paul
FDC Task Manager is way better than the stock TM. I hate that the built-in TM doesn't show 3/4 of the crap that I run. And what is the exclusive list for? Nothing is ever in there. With FDC, it's exactly like XP Task Manager but way better. Shows EVERYTHING, not to mention all the running services, open windows, full blow registry editor, IP/TCP services. etc etc. Go get it, it's free.
