hey,
im having MASSIVE problems with mms on my wizard. so ive decided to do a hard reset. i found a guide that shows me how i can possibly get around it, but i get stuck at one part.
it says in the guide "install these using total commander"
i have total commander, and i know how to install it onto my phone, but, before i do my hard reset, i want to know how to install the cabs. i havent a clue like
thanks all
To install CABs just transfer them to your PDA's memory or storage card, and then double-click them as if they were programs.
Just make sure that you get them out of archives they come in (they're often compressed with zip or rar) - so the file you transfer should have .cab extension.
Also note that some archivers can open and extract .CAB files on the PC - don't do it.
And remember that's always a good idea to use the foum search feature, since most basic questions have already been answered many times. You'll save both your time (you don't have to wait for answer), and other people's time (they don't have to spend their time writing it).
seriously, i know that was such a noob question, but it was such a massive help. thanks a million!

OK, bought a new Cingulr 8125, but am confused on how to install programs, and ware to install them. I had a Treo650 for long time and all I had to do was use palm one quick install and drop in the .prc files. I'm sure it's simple but need that first timer directions and I should be all set. My 1Gb card comes in Friday(forgot to order card with mda two days ago) so I will be all set. Thanks

There's a couple of ways to install apps. First and probably easiest is to install ActiveSync on the desktop, connect the phone up to and once they're connected and assuming a given app has an installer application, you run that on the desktop and it takes care of the details. After that you generally ok the install on the device and it installs.
Another way to install it to get the cab file for an app, copy it to an SD card, pop it into the phone, bring up file manager and nav to the folder, then click on the cab file. A lot of apps (but nowhere near all of them) let you download either an exe or a cab so it's your choice. Clicking the cab file sets the process in motion and, again, you have to "ok" the install and it installs onto the device. NOTE that, at the end of the install process, the cab file is deleted unless you've poked the registry into doing otherwise. That's not the default, however, so make sure you have another copy of the cab file somewhere.
Thanks for the info. I like the first way, it sounds easy. Im going to start with Weatherpanel friday after I get my SD card. I read most of the program will go on the card to take up the least space in the ram. I'm excited to try my first install, I will be looking for fed X truck. Thanks again, now I can get some shut eye tonight knowing how to do this....
Since I can't post in the q & a forum I am posting here but mods feel free to move it. So I have a wm6.1 device and a Mac computer and I regularly send files, like cab and music files with out an issue. However, today I noticed that I send a music file like usual and the file is no where to be found on the devices however space about the same size as the file is being taken up. So I send another two files(one music and one cab file) with out an issue at all. Then later on I send a cab file, but I don't see it on the device even though space is being take up. This may have happened prior to this, but I didn't realize it or something. So how can A) regain that space by deleting those files not showing up, or B) find the files that are not showing up and use them as I intended to. I am loosing space because of this. Option of last(and I mean last) resort is a hard rest which I don't like to do. Thank you....

get a good file browser and search for the missing files. You may want to use a wild card search (*.cab,*.mp3)
if you still can not find them look in the folders in /Windows and /Temp or or equivalent on the device
well i am using total commader so I dunno how good that is or not. Not to mention I have done what you suggested and even searched for files added with in the last 3 days and nothing on all fronts but yet the sapce is being taken up by something that I can't seem to find on my device. Memory maid was no help either(granted I only did a clean up). But thank you.
have you tried using the default file explorer?
I have an edited htchomesettings.xml that i want to put on my jade.
Everytime i try to drag 'n drop this file into my windows folder, i get the 'acced denied, be sure the file isn't read-only, in use or that you have enough space left'-error.
When looking at the file's properties (with Resco or total commander) it seems to be fixed in the Rom and i think that's the reason i can't overwrite it.
I already googled it and found some topics concerning this problem, and generally they all give the same advice:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2736263&postcount=500
the problem is, i already used both programs, and apparently it does not seem to work, or i'm doing it wrong or i'm overlooking something...
So, can anyony tell me how to overwrite this file with total commander or resco, if this is possible.
Many thanks, and sorry if this is a stupid question, i searched the web for about 3 hours before asking you guys .
It's a little easier than that. The only thing you need to do is make sure that the plugin is not running. In other words, deactivate the plugin in the Settings menu. Then, do a soft reset, just to make sure that the system has stopped using it. Then you can copy and paste with any program that you like. I have found that using a PC (via ActiveSync) works best. Good luck!!
Thanks for the quick reply thunder.
Unfortunately, it did not work out. I deactivated TouchFlo already (and did the reset). And still it gives me the same error.
"Cannot copy HtcHomeSettings. Make sure your device has sufficient memory, that the file is not set as read-only, and that you have permission to copy this file type"
This time I simply used Active sync as you told me.
Again, does it have something to do with the fact that this file is hardcoded on the rom?

Unfortunately, if it is built into the rom, you will probably have a hard time copying over it. Have you tried to edit the file directly on the phone? I believe that there are a few xml editors for ppc floating out there, you could try that. Also, is there anything in particular that you want to do that requires you to modify the xml? Reason I am asking is because you could use M2D Customizer if you are only looking into modifying some settings. Hope this helps...
Allright, found out how to overwrite it!
Made a .m2dct file containing my preferred theme and settings, then i edited the included HtcHomeSettings.xml file.
Then i used the M2D customizer to load the .2mdct file, and that worked perfectly.
Thanks for the hint, Thunder!
Ok, So with more hours spent trawling the site with a little help, I figured out which files I need to change to have different colours for switches on the comm manager but, how the *!$&@@@@**%$£"" do you change file marked as;
Read only
System
ROM
Winmo file explorer cannot do it
Total commander cannot do it
Resco changes the name, win mo chucks a **** fit and then changes the name back to stock
Windows explorer cannot do via active sync
So, how do I rename the original (so I can revert back should I need to) and copy the modified?
Beer tokens at the ready!
Thanks for reading
(PS, I know this has been covered a number of times, but I think I've covered the solutions provided so far in the above)
Checked out how to make a cab file, made it, installed it, sorted.
Firstly apologies for the noob question, I'm still very new to this WinMo stuff. And secondly I've searched about the forum all day but still having problems....
I've just got an HD2 and wanting to put some of the tweaks on it I've found via this site. When downloaded on my PC I'm faced with 4 or so files, two or three perhaps starting with a 'cab' file name and the other a reg or set up file. Basically what do I then do with these files? With the phone conected via USB I went into the deice memory and dropped all the files into the memory, did a soft reset, but nothing happened, no extra feature etc. Phone just started up as normal. Sorry for my 'thickness' lol. Would welcome any advice or a pointer to somewhere where it may be already written.
Thanks.
Do not unzip the .cab place on phone and browse phone with File Explorer, click on the .cab and install to Device....
It's a common noob mistake as .cab's are compressed archives so look like .zips on computer....
Thanks for the quick reply, I'll give that a go....
after dropping them on the device you have to run them. Open File Explorer and just launch them from there. A setup will be launched usually.
Thanks for the above advice, worked a treat.
Well I've had no problem putting cab files onto my HD2, however now I want to remove a few of them. Not sure how to remove the actual thing that I've changed??? I go into the device memory and I can delete the cab itself but the 'change' still remains, such as new task bar icons etc.
Any help appreciated....
settings -> add remove programs
just like on a computer
Oh yes of course, makes sense now. Many thanks
