Tilt Fell in Bucket of water - General Topics

I will buy a Tilt from a friend...where the phone fell inside a bucket of water..and now it doesnt work..im thinking of..buying it for 70 bucks..cuz i also have TyTN II...and my LCD Cracked..and im thinking of jus replacing mines withs his LCD since its still is good. Should..i buy it or not..please advise..and..also i think i can make use of the spare part..wat u guys think?? good idea or bad??

Fluid ruins just about everything. I think I would pass.

please..any more info would be very greatfull

I dropped my Wizard in a bucket of water once, it was fully submerged! What I did was took all of the removable parts off (battery cover, battery etc.), slid the screen open and left it close to a radiator for about a week.
Turned it on after a week and it ran fine, the only problem I had was months later the screen occasionally fades away, but from what I understand that is not uncommen on a Wizard and is fixable. So all in all I wouldnt be surprised if you could get it working!
Good luck.
edit: should have mentioned it was turned on when it fell in the water.

thnx..4 the post..btw..the phone is lyk two weeks old..everything..is new..im thinking that..maybe i can get some spare parts for my TyTN II..from the Tilt

Solution...
post caught my eye just figure id leave something that i have personally tried (and worked).I have a WING dropped it in the sink fully submerged, thought it was no good either...Took some advice of buying reg grain rice (non cooked of course) and completely burying or covering the entire device in a jug or bowl with the rice...leave for a couple days and the rice obsorbs all the fluid...worked like nothing ever happened...good luck

i see..well the phone..fell inside the water lyk two weeks ago..and still no luck of turning on..im thinking the battery is dead or something..but..since many of u had previous experience..may u cud advise me more..would really appreciate it

Only advice I can go with is if it was on when it fell into the water id say no, if it was off when it wen't into the water id still say no, cheers

2 years ago, my Wizard felt in the WC during 3 seconds maybe.
Then, I opened it, and I let it 3 days in rice. It's still running like a charm.
But if your bro's Tilt doesnt work anymore, I don't think his LCD is ok, I think it's the first thing that bricks.

Offer to take it off his hands, but don't pay him unless it works to replace your screen, make sure you agree on this, don't just stiff him.
This is not that complicated of a problem.

I dont have any rice. Will tapioca work instead?

they sell rice at any grocery store

well i doubt you have any silica gel if you don't have any rice.. but silica gel would work too.

Negotiate the price down to $65 and go buy a freakin' bag of rice dude!
And as far as the price goes, ask yourself "Would I pay $70 for a cinder block that *might* turn into a cell phone?" <.<

rice is a phone saver.
immediately pull the battery, let it sit in a tub of rice for a couple days. put in a new batt or try the old one if its been dried and it should work.

xda 2 in the loo !!!!! help

Hi all, before you say it, I know, should ahve been more carefull.
Ok, I was talking to a friend whilst peeing ( i know them enough )
The xda2 slipped from under my chin into the loo bowl, I've got it drying out gently on a radiator with a towl inbetween so as not to get to hot.
What do you think the chances areof a recovery ??
P.S i've removed the cover and battery to aid the drying out :?
TIA
i would just allow it to dry for as long as it takes... do not attempt to power it up before then as you might short something out. you dropped it in pee? ewww!

Thanks and yeah, i'm the one who's gotta live with it ...lol
if you have warranty, bring it back claiming the device smells awfully!!
no kidding: Let it all dry BEFORE you power anything up!
BTW: because the device has a backup-battery the device might allready be harmed.
TThe ting may well work if you give it long enough to dry out; If it is out of warranty you will be better off to dismantle it and dry the pieces out individually, they will dry out quicker that way.
However; was the water the unit got dupped in clean?? (Pee contains uric acid, which is acidic as the name suggests) if not you are advised to gently clean the cct boards before the copper tracks and solder points start to corrode. The best way I have found of doing this is to use a mild soapy water with a very soft toothbrush (use a neutral soap like dove)
Than make sire all the bits are perfectly dry, i would give them a couple of days if it is in kit form. Put it together and cross your fingers.
Note: the very small surface mounted ic's these days have a tiny airgap behind them, this is very very good at holding water in because of it's small size. Try wrapping each individual piece in a tea towel and whirling it round a couple of times to drive out the excess water...
and use some spray that is meant for circuitry boards or electronic equipment in general. That stuff drives the water right out !
lol my too got wet.
what happened to my xda was.
(well it din't slip in the loo)
actually i kept in on my bed and wen't to pee after coming out i was shocked to see what was happening right before my eye's.
my son he's 2 1/2 years old.
was having a bottle of water in his hand and before i could do anything he just emptyed it on the xda
first thing i did was removed the battery and open'd the device and ran and got hair drier use'd it on the device for fifteen minute's on low blow.
waited for 45 minutes with fingers crossed and guess what it worked after a few attempts of using the power switch.
lucky me lol.
there wa a nice walkthrough about opening your xdaII :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=8525
but the picture have disappeared. I just noticed :-(
if anyone still has them could he repost?
Well thanks for the hints, tips and stories, my xda is still under warrenty and i have insurance that covers for accidents, so if worst comes to worst i should get a replacement.
Thanks again
I dropped my jabra in the loo that was full (say no more) and had to wash it in clean water - let it dry out and it still works (this was about 8 months ago and it's still going strong)

And the moral of the story is drink 20lt of water a day to make your pee less acidic.

The first thing you should have done was to send him to the naughty step!!!
OK, I triedputting the battery in this morning after a night drying out, all i get is the blue light ( wireless ) and bothe the phonelights, red and green at the same time, nothing else works, power, soft reset, hard reset, nothing
I have the unit insured for accidental and theft / loss, will Ibe able to go straight to the o2 shop or will i have to go through a third party ???
TIA
EDIT: i've seen a ' how to ' guide for stripping down the xda2 somewhere, can't find it at the mo, could someone post the link for me please

Has anyone revived a touch pro from pissed pants?

So drunk, that pants got pissed. But the piss was so alcoholic it all evaporated. What do you think about how i should make sure the phone is dry?
look behind the battery for a white tab. itll be pink or red if it got wet.
Holy **** LOL
1. adult diapers
2. Store phone for 24 hours in a bag of rice... but its probably too late.
And.................What was the solution?
Thought this phone was a goner. After a few weeks in the rice it would turn on audio only. then crash and keep trying to boot.
For some reason yesterday the screen lit up as well... Any Hope for this HTC yet? It will crash right after the radio/rom screen, it says energyrom setting up device.. which is because i hard reset it when the screen was not working off memory. It was worth a shot. What should i do now guys?

. . . uh . . . wash your hands . . .
even if you dry it it will stink of piss lol
its called buy a new phone because the device is literally useless now. if you didn't have insurance on the phone you are pretty much out of luck.
tvos
Rice is not really a good desiccant. You need to get a bag of silica gel (the stuff that comes in small bags in luggage and stuff) and dismantle the phone as much as you feel comfortable and then leave it in a bad of that for several days.
You should be able to find it at a hardware store. I had a LG Shine that was left in a downpour for 2 hours face down and stepped on. Replaced the screen and left it in a bag of silica gel for 4 days and it has been working for 4 months now.
Another totally desperate thing to try after all else fails is the oven. Set it for like 150 degrees and leave the phone in it for 30 minutes or so. If you've got nothing left to lose it can't make it any worse. Take out the SIM, microsd, and battery first!
suffice to say ... that since your phone is already useless ... try the extreme ...
rinse it in rubbing alcohol (remove any small particles that might be breaking contact). Take out the battery first (wipe that separately)
then soak it in uncooked rice or silica gel
just a suggestion ... never tried it ... anyone else like to chime in on this one?
If you do try it ... let us know your results.

My Droid X just fell into a puddle of water

I'm ready to cry because I love this phone so much. It has everything I can ever ask for in a phone and today in fell out of my pocket and into an extremely large puddle of water. The phone itself turns on but unfortunately the screen does not. The buttons light up and I can press the location to unlock it and lock it but can't see sheeeeeet. Please, does anyone know what I can do to remedy this situation. Like I said, I'm ready to cry. It was a gift from my brother and now its broken thanks to my clumsyness.
Wrong forum section....
...regardless throw it in a plastic bag filled with rice to absorb the moisture. May want to take the battery, sim card, and SD card out first.
I sincerely apoligize for positing in the wrong forum.
I have it ina bag of rice at the moment, no sim card due to it being a Verizone branded phone. I am so depressed at this. I mean, it's my baby, my lifeline to the outside world and now this happens!V How long do you sggest that I leave it in the bag of rice? I almost want to throw it pretty hard at the wall and hope it works but I doubt that would resolve any problems and cause only more issues but thank you for the advice and lets keep our fingers crossed. I pray to the phone gods that the screen comes back on. <tear> <tear>
You can buy a replacement screen for your Droid x off eBay for like $25 US. You can also get the digitizer to for about the same price. The screen just hooks up through a ribbon cable. Shouldn't.be to hard to replace. And I've sent an old phone through the wash and as long as it dries out completely you should be fine. But the worst thing you coulda done was turn it on while it was still wet. Water+Electronics=dead electronics

You're absolutely right.
Update though :
Thank goodness I have some good friends who was able to deliver a fresh bag of rice to me while I'm at work. I took the battery out, emptied the rice into a ziplock, sealed it airtight and left it on top of the dryer at my job (I work at a day spa). 1 Hour later, put everything back in and I feel like shedding tears because I am so happy! It works. The rice wa able to absorb the moisture and make everything work like nothing happened at all.
So for future reference if anyone ever has an issue, make sure to use rice(fill the bag up), take the battery out, zip lock it, wait a few hours, and profit!
Thank you XDA Moto forums for all of your help! I greatly appreciate it! Thank you, thank you, and one more time, Thank YOU!!!
Chris.
Another update, it doesn't want to turn on now. This is frustrating. Back to the bag of rice and I'm just going to leave it there overnight and see how that goes.

I've never dropped anything on my phone, I do remember dropping a nokia phone in the pool a few years back. The new phones tend to be more sensitive. I dunno, i'd personally try to dry it out, maybe unscrew the back and put it under a fan, or blower of some sorts. Is your phone under warranty? Dunno if accidental stuff is even claimable under warranty.
After waiting a while, plugging it into the charger without the battery, and then putting battery back in, everything is working fine. No more issues Thank you all. The rice absorbed any moisture so it worked very well,
how do we know theres not gonna be another update? But glad it's working for you, that happened to my moms cell (which was also a Motorola) except it was in the toilet. Bag of rice and a heat lamp absorbed all moisture.

Water damaged

Hey all!
Wanted to get some info/opinion about what I can do about this. Here's how it all happened. I had my touchpad in my bag with a waterbottle, it leaked, more like emptied itself in my bag. Touchpad got soaked. It was on standby, so I made an effort to turn it off before any damage is done.
But too late, damage already done, I've put it on top of a convection oven to dry it out. Was then put into my rice bucket to hopefully get it dried out completely (don't know if brown rice work).
So after almost 2 weeks. Everything works, except for the screen.
(Can't post external link, due to fact I don't have much post)
It is still within warranty, but I did call in to get an idea of what to expect, in terms of cost. It'll cost me $235 to get it fixed.. I'm thinking of going the eBay route and going at it myself. As of now, I'm thinking it is only the lcd part that need replacing.
If the screen is that bad, you will have corrosion internally. Best bet is to replace it, sad to say.
Sent from my very "non-stock" TP.

Dropped S6 in water.

Yep. My daughter was in a rush to get into the pool and old dad forgot to take phone out of my pocket.
This happened a few weeks ago. I kept it in a bag of rice for 3 days and no luck.
I've since got another new S6 but was wondering if there's anything I can do in hopes of reviving it.
Thanks
Its a gonner.
The rice trick is a lie, its just as stupid to me as when batteries are dead to put them in your armpit to "recharge them" for that last little bit of juice.
The truth is, if you have a removable battery, the first thing you do is PULL that battery and LEAVE it out, which you and I dont. But when theres juice flowimg to the board when water hits it, it super cools very hot and tiny solder points on a board which causes fractures and most of the time complete breaks. Some people get lucky and only suffer from fractured joints from being able to pull the battery out and allowing joints to cool quickly. But with a sealed battery you are basically doomed from the time it hits the water OR if your lucky enough and it just got splashed or dunked for a second it didnt allow enough time to pull in water and your usually safe.
To those people who couldnt fire up their phone it is because water was shorting their phone, and once the water was evaporated if the joints didnt get damaged the phome fores up again. They say its the rice, I say its physics.
The roce thing is a joke, and it "only works" cause YOU the individual who thought the phone was thirsty didnt get it wet enough
;:EXAMPLE< THIS WILL DESTROY YOUR COMPUTER ONLY CONTINUE KNOWING YOUR COMPUTER WILL NO LONGER RUN AGAIN, I SUGGEST ALL PRECAUTIONS WHEN WORKING WITH ELECTRICITY AND AM NOT LIABLE FOR ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS TO YOU OR YOUR PROPERTY.>
I have PROOF of this theory if you thing im lying. Grab and old DESKTOP with an easily removable motherboard and remove it. I HAD ONE FROM 1998 THAT HAD WINDOWS 2000 ON IT. Again make sure its NOT been on, preferable one that has sat in your closet for years. Pull the motherboard and ram and cpu, places where water can get lodged, and soak the motherboard for 10 minutes. Dry it off as much as you can and bake it in the sun for a day, two just to be safe.. That night plug everything back in and it will fire up. It more than likely will run just fine, unless you didnt let it get hot enough to evaporate the water while in the sun. In the same test let the computer run for about 20 minutes, enough time to get everything nice and warm.
Then quickly turn the pc ocr and UNPLUG it and LIGHTLY with a cup of cool water slowly drizzle it on the motherboard and you should start to hear cracking noises. Again the next dry pull it out and you will notice cracks in solder joints. And youll nitce that it never works again.
Maybe ill make a youtube video as I have another old pc.
The point it hot joints dont like cold water. So its all up to how fast water got in if any, most of the time if your phone is sealed properly its just outside on the screen and casing.
Even if it did revive, it's days would be numbered anyway. You could eBay it for water damage/parts only and probably recoup a couple hundred bucks.
Edit: My opinion on the rice is that it only helps dry out the phone slightly faster if left completely sealed airtight and buried for like a week. If there's going to be damage, it has already been done as was stated above.
See...rice works great with humidity or direct contact with water, my problem with rice on a phone is it is not in direct contact with water. NOW if you said you coverd the phone in rice in a SEALED container and threw that out in the sun? Yes I could understand the rice absorbing water faster
Now i am no genuis...ive just done a lotttt of research in my time. And I do a lot...of testing hahaha
I dropped mine in the sink under running water and it shorted out. Put it in rice for 5 days and it started working eventually. Still working flawless to this day. So rice is not totally a lie unless that was just a coincidence. All I know is that my phone is still working after water ****ed it up

I'm glad you clarified your earlier post. In certain cases, the rice trick does work. It does absorb humidity and draw wetness to itself. However, like you stated, it usually cannot magically pull moisture out of trapped jointed components.

I'm sure if they really wanted to, they could. I doubt anyone would go through trouble. Have you tried hooking it to a computer lately and see if there's a response?
