Hi everyone... PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!
My new phone (Touch by HTC 6900) was powering off by itself and not turning on unless I removed the battery -- after I had tried to pair the phone with another phone using BlueTooth. So, I called Sprint who had me to hard reset the phone. But first beforing doing that, the Sprint representative had me to copy the PIM file to the SD card in the phone, then remove the card from the phone. After we hard reset the phone, I was told to insert the SD card back into the phone. But, the PIM file now reads "pim.vol.0b935b1b" instead of just "PIM". Now, I can not open this file (my contacts) on my phone nor my computer. I cut this file off the SD card and placed it on the desktop of my computer. When I try to open it there, I get a message saying that I'm attempting to open a ".MENC" file. So, I guess my file was encrypted. I DO NOT have this list of contacts anywhere else and despirately need to get them out of this file. Does anyone have any idea how I can retrieve my contacts list from this file - decrypt this file?
Thanks for any help that you can offer me....
& Happy Holidays!
Pierce
Hello and welcome to the forum!
Please be sure to read this!
I moved your thread in to a more appropriate topic.
Now to your question:
The file is not encrypted. I am not sure how it got the extension 0b935b1b but the name should be pim.vol.
The PC can not recognize this file because it is EDB format unique to Windows Mobile devices.
What you need to do to get your contacts back is from a PC (via ActiveSync) or by using Total Commander for PPC rename pim.vol which is in root (base "\") directory of your device to pim1.vol then copy the pim.vol you had on SD in it's place.
The soft reset the device. If the file was not damaged you should get your contacts back.
Hope this helps, good luck!

The file is encrypted - he did not write the full file name - extension of it is .menc.
@ Pierce: The encryption key is held in device's internal memory. After HR or flash it gets overwritten/erased. SD card encryption uses AES 128 bit encryption, brute force attack against this kind of encryption with normal PC would take decades. Your contacts are therefore most probably gone for good. More info about SD Card encryption with a link to M$ developers statement about it can be found here.
My apologies. I did not realize SD encryption actually renames the files.
Guess I need to do some reading.
Thanks for the link KarhU.

No need to apologize I am no expert. But I feel sorry for the guy....
Thank you guys.... so there's no third party software that I can get to undo this problem... to allow me open this file? My husband is giving me so much grief about losing all his business contacts -- that he didn't have saved anywhere else.
Thanks again... & Happy New Year!

Hello ppl
Yesterday I noticed a bunch of files in my storage card, possibly fake ones or junk ones... problem is they're to large to be "real", since I've got a 4GB SD with about 1GB free space.
They're a total of 6 files, four of which are named like "z≥┼3>ô½`.>ô½", "╡Ü`^ô½`.WÜô" etc and are 1.50GB large each, and another two, "MZÉ" and "t", sized 0kb!
Plus, they can't be deleted. Even though they're visible through my pda's explorer (both windows and resco) and my pc when connected, if I try to delete them I get a "file not found" error!
Any ideas? Should I just take a backup of my files and format the card?

Hi,
Yes take a backup if possible and re-format, but check you're files are correct in the backup.
The syptons you describe, normally means that the File Allocation Table has been corrupted, so I would reccommend you attempt to get your files off as soon as possible and DO NOT Write any data to the card untill your backup is verified. Writing more files to the card could cause more corruption and possibly overwrite and damage files that allready exist.
Once you have verified your files, do a complete format of the card and test it before relying on any data on it. If you plan to keep using the card, I would recommend regular backups for a while too.
Cheers,
Beasty
Hi Beasty,
I have a similar problem, though no data loss. It keeps asking to format and when I try to format, it says "format not successful". Any idea?
Tried to format on a PC and got the same results!

P.S. Just sent you a PM!

Hi KOR,
Stupid question, but is the write protect tab enabled?
Sounds as though the disk is damaged if not write protected, there are some tools that can force a format, but you must know the exact sizes........ Google should help
Hello All,
I am having a serious problem with my HTC Wizard and i want a solution for it.
I was running TNT Professional 1933 WM6 ROM on my Wizard then i found some problem with sms notification so i thought to upgrade my Rom.I took backup of my SMS with PIM 2.5 and copied the backup file into my SD Card. Then i removed the SD card and Reinstalled(upgraded) the same TNT Pro 1933 ROM.Everything went fine and the Rom installed properly. After finishing and setting up my device,i inserted the SD Card into my Device and found few files with an unknown extension. The file name were same but with an extension".86e1bece" i.e the original backup file name was 28-10-08 but it changed to "28-10-08.pib.86e1bece".These files shows an icon with a lock in PC and the extension it shows is MENC.
I searched in this forum and found few posts having same problem with a little difference but there was no solution.
I want to know how can i recover these MENC Files in order to recover my precious Data.I need an urgent help in this matter and i hope i will get your replies as soon as possible.
Thanks
Anyone out there????
same hapens to me..anyone have a solution?
I dont think a solution is available for this, they are simply encrypted via WM and its not possible to de-crypt them, unless you got the original handset and its not been hard reset! I have been looking hi and low for this and cant find anything.
I got loads of files that I cant access case I had to carry out a hard re-set.
Apparently the file is encrypted and can be decrypted only on the handset it was encrypted on.
To prevent getting such file type in the future, follow this procedure
Start>Settings>System Tab>Encryption
UnCheck on encryption and after this you will get only normal (Unencrypted file).
Another way is the activesync way. Transfer the file from the handset to pc via ActiveSync, it will automatically decrypt and paste the regular format on to your pc.
Hope it helps

I have just stumble into the same problem. I flash my HD with a new ROM and found out that all my jpg and other files were not readable.
My solution (if you will call it) is to reinstall the old ROM and unticked the encrypt memory card option. You should be able to read the menc files back from the PDA.
After that back-up all your memory card data and re-format your PDA with the new ROM.
Lastly, copy the back-up back into the memory card if anything goes wrong.
Good luck
Thanx alot bro...

That works for you?

Yes it work for me too.
I got same ploblem with Omnia lite
Okay I'm pretty much a nub and I admit it. This may or may be the right place to ask but hopefully it is. I used to have encyption forced on to my device from work. Now I don't. I am supposed to be able to go to:
Click Start > Settings System tab, and then click Encryption.
Thing is that it is not there so I cannot decrypt my storage card.
I am running NRG's rom.
Is there some exe someplace, a registry key to turn it on or off, or a cab I can install to put the encrypt sd onto my phone?
I searched around the forums but I didn't find it so I either looked with wrong search words or it isn't here.
Somone please help. I want to move iformation on my SD to my desktop and it won't decrypt.
Previously I was using cm9, after that I upgraded to cm10. I wiped data, wiped cache in cwm recovery.
After that, I tried xfering some files over to my tab, it looked like this
i. imgur.com/T3LAU.png
From this picture, it can be seen that my internal memory has files and is not empty
yet when I enter the folder
i. imgur.com/Mn7lR.png
Completely empty, cant be seen.
Even after trying to copy and paste files in, only the new files appear, can no longer find my old files.
Can anybody help me? same thing for the SD card. SD card only detected when I removed and plugged in with external usb card reader to my pc.
(I can't post images yet, hopefully someone with >10 posts can hotlink it for me).
Really urgent because I have to use it for my lecture notes in school.
If you want a workaround on this issue, you can use a cloud storage app. For example, dropbox (go to my signature and click the dropbox logo) can allow you to transfer files without even plugging your Xoom into your computer
Managed to solve the issue by doing a complete memory wipe on my internal hard disk but backing up important files before hand w dropbox as the files are still accessible with astro.
No idea how this happened though.
It's called MTP. Hahahaha in other words windows sucks.
Really what happens is the file list directory isn't updated so it doesn't show up on explorer. I don't even use explorer, I just use ADB push or pull.
Hi, I'm using Samsung Galaxy Trend GT-S7560.
So the problem is if I do anything with my external SD Card (move, rename, delete, make files.. etc), it will save any changes at first, but it will return to a specific state either after a while, or if I reformat/remount the card or restart the phone.
This happen all of a sudden.
Ex: I deleted a pic and after a while it will be there again even it was already gone before, create a file it will gone, move a file from phone storage to the external SD Card it will gone too.
It's not like I can't edit at all. But it will return to the state before I edit it.
The problem made my apps like Link2SD can't run properly.
I tried to edit the files using my PC or an app but it will return to the specific state in the end.
Please help, thanks!
(yes, my device is rooted)
