Turning off screen also kills Wifi - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario ROM Development

Howdy
I have noticed that turning off the screen (either via an app or by a brief press of the power button) also kills any Wifi connections that are active. Is there any way around this? Thanks.

Pressing the power button put the device to sleep/standby/suspend mode. Its not just Wifi, even the Bluetooth, GPS and everything but the phone part goes 'off' to save power. But why do you need WiFi to be active when in StandBy mode?
Regards,
Carty..

are you sure that you are toggling the screen and not turning off the device compleatly?
all pda's i've had turn off when i press the powerbutton
but there are programs which toggle the screen and dont stop my
music from playing

Because I have VoIP set up and if the phone goes in to standby, it will still accept incoming normal calls, but not VoIP calls.

It's not powering the device off completely, a longer push of the power button is needed for that.
But, I had a setting in "Power" enabled, which would "Turn off the device" if it wasn't used for a period of time, and this was also killing Wifi when it was triggered.

Audio manager for ppc has resolved this problem. As far as i know its the only one that doesn't stop even if you press the power button. it keeps playing in background. Maybe someone can understand how they did it and post it. I also want my wifi no to be turned off when i press the power button since it doesn't reconnect to my access point. i have to do it manually
Regards

theres a way to turn off the screen, alot of the roms here have it in the shortcut folder.... and it doesnt kill stop anything like wifi bluetooth or WMP....

Since you know it why don't you mention it

I myself won't be leaving Wifi turned on now. I did some tests re battery life and found battery drain was just too severe if Wifi was left on permanently.

turning off the XDA EXEC

Hello
How does ont turn off the XDA EXEC, i dont see any off button. the power button just turns the screen backlight on and off.
the reason why i wanted to know what it was is because i am porting my number across networks, and 02 told me to turn off my phone a number of times during the day, so that it could go into a boot up process.
There is no real way to trurn the device off, but what they will be wanting you to do is disable the phone section (do this by turning on flight mode, or by clicking on the green connections manager in the bottom and click on the phone button. Click the phone button again to turn it on.)
Start -> Programs - Wireless Manager -> All Off (This switches of the phone.
Then use the phone on/off button at the top of the screen there, to switch it back on and force your SIM to re-register with the network, which should have the desired effect your after.
Taking out the battery is the only real 'off' button.
thanks for the replies dudes
did you try holding the power button as well? that works on my wizard
not sure if it's true for all wm5 though
i held the power down button for some time and it blanked teh screen. when i held the power button again for a few seconds the screen came back to life, but this time there is no "back light(?)"
how do i get back the "back light(?)"

There remains a bug, it seems, that sometimes prevents the backlight from firing up when starting the device.
It used to happen on my XDA2i and still happens on my Exec.
I usually have to get it in a good light and go to settings and move the brightness slider to get it working.
Turning off the device, I find, is actually achieved by pressing the power switch before closing lid.
I find I get much more out of each charge if I do this rather than just close the lid.
That of course turns of the PDA functionality of the device. The radio (phone) service is still disabled via Flight Mode.
somehow i double posted...sry
thanks for the reply
i guess by pressing the power button, the pda goes ito some sort of sleep mode, since it does not boot up later, correct?
when it is charging up using a usb cable connected to my pc, the backlight is turned of, and no amount of pressing buttons seems to turn on the backlight, is that correct?
i checked out the brightness level sliders, there are 2, the
1. on battery which is somewhere in between
2. on power which is "slided" to the left, is that its correct position?
you will probably find it will selfboot at midnight.. this appears to have been intentional in the design of all the XDA's.
Thia can be a nuisance but it is probably to do with reseting timers. alarms etc
The backlight is configured to be on/off during external power and on battery in which ever setup you choose.
The actual levels you set it at are your choice ..
I set mine to be off after 5 mins on external power i.e. when charging except when i use tomtom and want it to stay on whilst externally powered.
On these occasions I change the setting before the journey
Your original question with reference to O2 making changes that required you phone to be off, in my experience, means not having the O2 sim in the device.
thanks for the reply dude
i think my questions have exceeded the remit of this thread. i will start another thread for the backlight questions

Jasjar Power Button not powering off Jasjar, just turning screen off?

I have WM6, but i have noticed, i can't power off the Jasjar unless i pull the battery.
If i hold the power button it turns the screen off but the unit is still on, have downloaded psShutXP and this does the same.
Am I doing something wrong or missing something, when flying you can't have the unit on, even if flight mode is activated.
Checked and searched everywhere for software etc to try resolve this but no luck!!!
Can anybody help please
Tks
yes and no
Hi there,
You correctly turn of the screen with the powerbutton. Thing is, you do not want to power it down. Because powering the unit down might cause loss of data (when you turn it on you will get a blank device). The rom is powered by the battery.
So, flightmode is sufficient for flying an airplane. All you need to proove is that all receivers and transmitters are turned off. (phone, bt, wlan).
Should you really need to power it off anyway, i´ve found no other way but to remove and reinsert the battery.
good luck
daniel
pressing the power button briefly, turns the phone onto standby mode.
pressing and holding the power button, turns off the display backlight only.
setting the phone on Flight mode, shuts off all radio activity, and is sufficient for inflight usage.
there really is no good reason why you'd wanna switch off the phone completely, but if you insist, then as you expected.. pulling the battery out is the only way for now.
i wouldn't do it anyway, as it might lead to data corruption and other issues (kinda like if you pull the battery out of your laptop while it's on standby/power saving)
You cannot completely turn off the device.. it is part of the design.
What you want to do is not a good idea. No developer even bothered figuring out how to do it, due to the mentioned side effects of losing data.. hence there is no app that can do that.
maybe when time comes, developers may come up with a hibernate mode -- saving data into the sd card

With devices like the Universal (and most other WM5 & WM6 devices), pulling the battery won't cause you to lose data - it just acts as a soft-reset. (Although older devices, eg the Alpine, if the backup battery died as well then you'd have a hard reset)
If you are going on a flight just set it in flight mode, and turn off the volume, then put it in its "off" mode (ie hit power). This should be enough for most airlines. If you are really worried, then just close all the programs running and drop the battery
Well, didn't expected a huge response.
Thank you all for your feedback and info. I had a Jamin before and you could turn that off with no data loss, therefore thought the Jasjar could do it as well.
I just thought it was my unit since i loaded WM6 onto it, but it iseems to be the norm.
Will live with that, bit annoying having to pull the battery thou to turn the device off.
Thanks

Orbit 2 Wi-Fi turning off

Hello everyone,
Can somebody tell me if the following phone behaviour is normal ?
When Wi-Fi is working and you press the power button (just press, not hold) , the screen backlight switches off (power saving option). But once it's off, Wi-Fi turns off as well. When you switch the screen on, Wi-Fi authomatically turns on as well.
The same scenario takes place when the screen backlight switches off on its own (power saving option).
The downside is that, when a large file is downloaded from the internet and the display power saving option is set to a short period of time, it's impossible to download the file. The same with e.g. Skype. When making a call, you might want to switch backlight off using the power button but you drop the connection at the same time.
If this behaviour is normal, how to force Wi-Fi to be on all the time?
Is there any registry that does the job?
Thanks,
RZ
Powersaving IS power saving and considering Wi-Fi is considered heavy-battery-usage it would be unlogical not turning it off. I doubt it's easy to keep it on, sorry
KaiserTweak has a setting to let you keep wifi on even if you go on power save mode (i used it on my kaiser).
But don't thinky o should try KaiserTweak as I read somewhere on this forum it can hard reset your polaris!
Maybe that program can be modified for Polaris s by someone.

Help- on/off power button malfunction.

Orbit2 - the on/off button at the top is non responsive . It means when my backlight turns off I have to reset the device to use it again. I have disabled the backlight timeout for now,but it is an extra drain on the battery and im worried if the device turns off I will not be able to turn it on again. Any solutions ?
Is this an problem anymore?
Got the same now, an opened the device.
The button is mountet at 4 points, at mine 2 are brocken => no contact, no function...
After being quoted 100quid to fix it, I changed the settings so any button will take the device out of sleep mode. It is not fixed but this way works ok .

I have the same problem but can't find the setting that will allow me to un-sleep my phone with any button.
I use rom: 3LIT3_VIII_Full NLD
I think that these setting has been disabled in the rom.
Is there a register setting?
thanks
I do not know anything about roms.
You can turn off sleep mode in the battery saver I think. But means your battery gets used more quickly . The other way I tried was in the settings where any button will turn off sleep mode. This way was better.
Same problem! Although me being the idiot that I am have just dropped the battery and have no way of turning it back on. Any ideas?? Anyone?
Just plug your charger in press the camera and reset then you should get the spl screen then press the reset to boot into windows. This will only work if you are getting power ie from your charger or usb.

Is your phone led lighting up when plugged in ? If not could be usb not working,if it is could be your camera button knackered to so can't get to the spl screen.
Then plug your phone in then do a hard reset except dont press the send button then you should boot into windows without loosing any data.

I just started experiencing that my phone wont go into sleep mode after pressing the power button. I can hold it down and pop up menu to turn off shows, and bring it out of sleep after the 15 sec delay i have set up but thats it any ideas?
The only issue I have is when the phone goes to sleep wifi turns off and the captivate starts charging data to my plan. Does this happen to anyone else and if so is there a known cure?
I had my phone not go to sleep at set timeout one time. It may have been due to an app i installed. I rebooted and no problem since.
As for using data when asleep - Wifi turns off when the phone goes to sleep mode - this is the way it behaves, same as iPhone and other android phones. You have some app connecting in the background, maybe email sync?
You can keep the wifi on during sleep by going into the Settings-> Wireless and Network -> Wi-Fi Settings. Press the menu button in Wi-Fi settings press on "Advanced".
In there is an option called Wi-Fi sleep policy. Switch that to Never and you shouldn't have to worry about the wifi turning off when in sleep mode.

Yea It was an app I installed, I did a reinstall from a back up and it works now.
Captivate Shutting Down Instead of Sleeping
Mine is doing this too, as are a few others, from the look of some posts on here. Mine started after a day and a half and two full charges. Suddenly I would go to wake it up and it will have turned off.
I'm thinking I might take it back to the store to exchange it, as not everyone is experiencing this problem. Sucky. I did notice that the battery, after you take the door off, is a little wiggly on the side opposite the connectors. I wedged some thin paper in the between the battery and the battery slot and it still did it. Got to be a problem with the individual phone.
Total PITA!!
I had problems with mine shutting off while in sleep mode and I uninstalled SetCpu and my task killer and it stopped doing it....
