Scroll Wheel... - Touch Cruise General

Hey
Quick question for those lucky people who own the o2 version of the polaris.
Is the scroll wheel still a directional pad aswell as scroll "spin round" wheel?
The Polaris looks like its "pressable" ( up down left right ) etc , but from pics of the o2 version orbit 2, it just looks like it spins round, like the current orbit 1. Have this directional input is a big thing for my next fone, especially for the orbit as its serious lack of buttons.

Yes it does. This one does not rattle like Artemis when a call comes. It is firmer. I think each round turn shifts it through one line item I wish I could find a regstry key to make it more responsive.

So just to confirm, its a directional pad aswell?

Yes. It is everything in one

Awesome, will be getting this for my next fone.... wish they would hurry up and release it in the UK!!!

It is. Also way better than Artemis.

the d-pAd is very good yes
but the wheel is not better than artemis for sure,i believe that the use of the wheel for me is only for zoom in/out.
good quality but no use.

Who here went from hermes (8525) to kaiser (tilt)? I have some questions

is it me or did the keyboard and touch screen work better with the 8525?
sometimes, i have to tap a couple times on the same spot to get it to work with the tilt.
and sometimes the keyboard skips a few letters when i'm typing.
It's both ^^. I had the same problem, when changing from a Wizard to the Kaiser. But i am getting used to the "Pressure Point" and the problems are getting less with skipped characters.
It's like getting used to a cupler of a new car. ^^
i had the same problem, I liked the 8525 better... only thing I kept the Kaiser is the built-in GPS, I didn't like the idea of carrying GPS device with me all the time when I had the 8525
8125 - 8525 - Tilt
Had all three like the tilt the best. Gps, style, etc... very slick looking ppc, best overall in my opinion. Also you have to remember the kaiser is still somewhat new still. Once the chefs really figure everything out I believe it will be even better. Just my .02.
it seems that different roms also give different sensitivities somehow too, but i never noticed it skipping the keyboard characters
The keyboard in the Kaiser feels cramped and I usually catch myself pressing the wrong key! Yeah, Hermes keyboard definitely felt better - to me at least!
cool. thanks. nice to know i didnt get a broken phone. i like this phone better than the 8525 except for the no light and the screen facing the other way when sliding the keyboard.
When just considering the actual typing comparison, the 8525 keyboard for me was miles ahead of the tilt's in my opinion. The buttons are difficult to differentiate to me. I too experience skipped keys and also, my space key has serious lag. If I want to type "I am on my way" If I am not careful what will be put out is "Ia mo nm yw ay" as you can imagine this is VERY annoying...but I did notice that on Custel's AT&T rom's v2.1 this very rarely happened. So who knows, I dont have any issues with the screen. Besides the keyboard, I can't complain on anything else phone related.
Screen Sensitivity !
to increase the screen sensitivity of your Kaiser / HTC TytnII / AT&T Tilt (8925), go to RegEdit and do the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Drivers>TouchPanel>PressureThre shold
modify to 210 or more (modify the DWORD Data field).
Enjoy a more sensitive touch pad.
Re-aligning your screen also adjusts the sensitivity Start->System->Screen. That is a better way to adjust the sensitivity than editing registry...
The missing letters issue can be improved from Start->Personal->Buttons->Up/Down control.
Set them faster…
if the 8525 had the same built in memory and ram and built in gps.. it'd be my dream ppc

yeah the keyboard on the hermes is much better! Real buttons! On the tytn 2 the buttons are strange...!
I have the same opinion about the keyboard. I like the keyboard of the 8525 better than the Tilt. I don't know why but for some reason when i would use the keyboard on the 8525 i could just keep typing and then the unit would catch up to me. When i type on the tilt i have to watch it to make sure it is typing everything i put in.
As for the screen i haven't had an problems yet.
But i will say if it were up to me i would still choose the tilt over the 8525. the batt life is better, th egps, the speed, the storage, etc. etc. etc.
8525 to Tilt
8525 had better keyboard hands down. I do like the feature on the tilt's keyboard though that when u have cap shift/fn enabled a light is on so you know instead of having to look on the screen on the 8525 to see whats goin on. i love how when u slide the tilt open and close it almost slides on its own. The tilt feels more stable, the 8525 felt cheap like if i dropped it once its all over. Love the rubber back on the tilt and gps. With roms at 32 mgpp running on the tilt compared to an 8525 that can barely handle 6mgpp, its gonna be limitless when the chefs get the tilt dialed in and looks like Dutty is doin that as we speak. Tilt has some getting used to but much better than 8525 overall, especailly when its free, haha!!!
best feature so far on the Tilt, it's heavy & has steel. Great weapon for self defend sometimes.
the keyboard on mine doesnt seem responsive like the hermes.
I agree on the typing issue. I think it has something to do with their texture. I also miss spaces and double type letters and hit the ones next to the one i mean. On my 8525 my fingers just glided along the keyboard.
As for the way the screen opens, I don't mind it, i just liked on the 8525 how i could reach the stylus with my right pointer finger.

yes, i hate that i can't use my right pointer finger anymore. it's very annoying but i guess i'll get used to it.
I agree about the keyboard. I thought perhaps I had a defective one, but it is behaving the same as yours.
I went from a Tytn to a Tilt and I have to say that the Tilt is heads and shoulders above the Tytn design.
The Tytn felt plastic-y and cheap in the hand. Moving parts felt creaky and overall build quality was poor.
I'm not sure if the 8525 suffered from these issues but from the looks of it the Kaiser design was taken from the 8525 versus the Tytn.
The Kaiser/Tilt D-pad cluster is clearly descended from the sculpted 8525 design rather than the flat (and almost unusable) Tytn version.
Things better on the Kaiser (other than the obvious things like GPS and tilt screen):
-keyboard sliding mechanism (springs closed if you accidentally open it but keeps open if you actually intended to open it)
-build quality
-
while heavier, it has a much better feel in the hand probably helped by the rubberised backplate.
-a few mm thinner seems to make all the difference with the pocketability of the device.
-single piece stylus. Every telescoping stylus I've used has fallen apart or eventually stopped working the way it was supposed to (Toshiba e800 had one as well -- ugh).
-better access to SIM card.
-one form factor for all carriers and regions. The two case designs (Herm 100 vs 200) created a huge problem with case makers assuming the Tytn and the 8525 were exactly the same. A Tilt case will work on a Kaiser and vice versa.
Things better on the Hermes:
-has LED flash (sorely missing on the Kaiser)
-has IRDA port
-better placement of softkey buttons (both on the front cluster and on the keyboard)
-soft reset switch is FAR more responsive on the Hermes, and it's not placed near the mini USB port. The Kaiser has them too close together and it's very easy to jam the stylus into the port and damage it.
-better position for the card slot, and it never needed a door. The impossible-to-open-without-tweezers door on the Kaiser slot is the one flaw in a nearly perfect case design.
-better hard button feel. The Kaiser power button took me a long time to get used to as it sits too flush with the case. Kaiser buttons don't have a tactile click when you push them. Also the Hermes has one extra button over the Kaiser (the Comm manager button).
Where the Kaiser and the Hermes both fail:
-Stylus silo on the BOTTOM. UGH UGH UGH Once that silo gets worked in you will be losing stylii like no tomorrow. The Kaisier silo seems a little better, but it's still a potential lost stylus if you aren't careful.

Ok - the T-Mobile Vario 4 aka Raphael:
First impression: smaller and not as heavy as the Kaiser... unlike the HTC version there is not that annoying diamondshaped backcover so that it lies even on the table.
It has still no infrared - so forget about your all-in-one-remote... but: the camlight is back! yiha! Additionally, the camera is a lot faster than on my kaiser!
The usb-jack supports a video-out cable which is not included... and unfortunately it is located now more in the center of the device: so go buy a new active car-holder
The keyboard slides out now on the other side again (like Tytn I) and has now 5 rows of very touchy, respondive buttons... hey and there is a ctrl / strg button now!
The Vario 4 HAS a fm Radio and an acceleration sensor!
The rom including its TouchFlo3d is pretty fast... no comparison to my Kaiser.
GPS is on board, but didnt test how fast it gets its fix.
The display with its bigger resolution is very nice - but its a little bit reflective for my taste - and i guess placing a screenprotector on it will vanish its frameless design
Its only tri-band, but as long as u stay in good old europe: no problem All others need to wait till the end of the year when its released in U.S. as a quadband (not 100% sure about that release date). Browsing with the preinstalled opera in hsdpa is really a fun!
All in all: a very sexy device which kicks the ass of my kaiser as well as all those iphone kids!
PS: Sorry for my english
Edit: I forgot - the 10sec backlight bug is on board, but putting a mortscript into autorun will solve it

Can you please give a statement about the reception quality of HSDPA/3G compared to your Kaiser? Is it equal, worse of better?
You know there's an issue with the Diamond, but hopefully the different housing/(antenna setup?) could solve this problem for the Touch Pro.

hmm... no issues so far. I am running Tejaks V5 on the kaiser which is damn fast... but i would say the Vario 4 faster somehow. Reception is good too.
@licht77
since you didn't mention it, I take it the screen does not "tilt" when the keyboard is pulled out. I really love this feature on my kaiser.

There is no "tilt" feature for the "Touch Pro" like the "Kaiser" has.
Smaniac, I think you talk about screen orientation (landscape mode). Of course the Touch Pro rotates the screen in general, but "tilt" is something completely different.

Oh lol, now I see what you mean. You mean the screen doesn't physically rotate when keyboard is used. Yes, I knew that, and I think I prefer the 5 row fixed keyboard instead of a 4 row tilting one.
I wouldnt be surprised if it was marketed as the "AT&T Touch Pro", or perhaps the AT&T 3525 or similar.
Camera and hardware buttons
licht77,
Could you please confirm: there are many less hardware buttons compared to the kaiser, is this correct? Counting on the Kaiser there are 8 in the front (plus action and dial) plus the side's jog wheel and four side buttons (including power) and from what I saw on the Raphael there are only four in the front (plus action and jog) and the power button on the sides?
And camera: how much it differs in terms of picture quality from the Kaiser?
I thank you.

How Useful is a Trackball or Pad in a Touchscreen Phone?

I've never had a touch screen phone. The only touch screen device I've had is a Palm IIIxe. Yeah, I guess I'm dating myself here. All of my phones have had hardware buttons with some sort of D-pad. I'm considering finally getting a touchscreen device (EVO) and I'm wondering what you guys think about alternative cursor controls in combination with a touchscreen.
The G1 had a trackball. As does the Nexus One. Several Android devices now have optical pads in place of the trackball. And some other devices have hard d-pads.
My question is thus:
What do you guys think about having an extra way to input on a touchscreen phone? Do you find yourself using it often? Hardly at all? Would you rather have that extra space as more screen (or something else)? And which do you prefer? Optical, hard d-pad, or trackball?
Just trying to get some discussion and some thoughts going.
Thanks.

Optical track ball looks sweet, but it's alot finickery than the trackball itself. I can old see a d-pad for games, that's it.
it is GREAT for selecting texts. i think track ball is the best as it feels the most smooth and have some physical feedback.
I'm happy to have it. It would honestly draw me away from the phone if it didn't have a trackball. I constantly use it, it's kinda just natural.
my x1 got an optical actionpad and it's pretty jittery close to useless
It's a great optional way to input, edit, etc. Plus changing colors for diff events is awesome...Luv it on my Nexus!
I love the trackball on my Nexus, just makes it WAY easier to correct text, instead of tapping around till you find the right spot, you just go there. Now I will be buying an Evo, and I'll get used to it, I did it on my iPhone & I do fine without it on my Droid, but it will be missed.
I've heard trackballs don't last as long. Is this true?
I love my trackball it makes things easy
How does it work exactly? Do you get a mouse pointer? Or are the trackballs movements just translated into up/down/left/right?
A mouse pointer would be sweet....
I love the trackball. On my G1, it is no longer perfect, but still does the job.
I have just got a Desire as a new work phone, and the optical track ball SUCKS. So dissapointed. It's going back! I'm either going to wait for a keyboard phone or get an N1.

You get a mouse pointer in Opera 5. I like having it.
Is it mini or mobile? I can't remember.
TrackballS tend to get dirty and jam, this happend to almost all my phones that had them (especially BB's). Now that I have a phone with the optical pad, I find it more stylish, durable, comfortable and reliable. It just took a little getting used to at first. Im sure most phones from now on will be using the pad over the ball. Trackballs are so 2009.
it's 2008, not 2009
optical trackpad has been out for too long and I think it's better. I don't know how can you guys use the trackball and not get it dirty :-s
and on android phone I don't need either of those, I use volume key to move the cursor, and it's good enough for me
I use it mainly for moving my cursor in a text, copying text.
Sometimes I use it for scrolling through a list or a document.
Little use overall, but I'm happy it's there when I need it.

Exactly, it is rarely used, but selecting text/moving the cursor around a text field with the optical sensor is bad. You can only jump 1 character at a time.
As I mentioned before, it's great having the mouse pointer in Opera, and the trackball complements it great. The optical is no good at all with this, as it only moves up/down and left/right, not diagonally, and only in small steps.
I have had my G1 for ages, without a case, and the trackball, while not as good as new, still blows the optical sensor away.
I don't think it matters what year it is, there are advantages to the trackball over the optical.
I like the trackpad and the hardware d-pad of my Xperia X1. They enable me to use my phone singlehandedly whenever I need to. It's also nice to scroll through lists. And last but not least one or two more opitions to control your device can never be bad.
very useful, you cant navigate the bootloader without it.
i smashed my phone yesterday and im glad i have the hardware buttons including the trackball
i managed to backup everything without touch input! win
the track ball would keep me away from the g1, nexus one and any other phone that has it. i never understood it nor did i see the need for it. i've played with them on my friends phones and have not felt comfortable using them. but it does seem like others have found them valuable so i guess its safest to say that they are not for everybody.

XPERIA X1 vs touch diamond2

which one is better to get.
i can get both phone on almost same price in used condition.
Mmm hard one, if you like a d-pad & hardware keyboard the x1 is your device, I just set up a Diamond 2 for a work friend, quite a nice device but I did miss d-pad & a hardware keyboard is simply better than any touchscreen for serious typing.
any suggestions?
As a diamond2 user myself, i would definitely go for the x1 just for the keyboard.
If typing is not that important to you, you should probably go for diamond2.
I have X1 for about year and a half. After few months of use it developed a crack in the housing (standard issue). Today physical keyboard is pain to use, since bottom row buttons barely register presses (sometimes nothing, sometimes 3-4 letters at once). At least in my case, my xperia's build quality is terrible.
Another issue is the SOD (appears on most ROM's with Sense), when phone freezes overnight just when just have to wake up on time in the morning.
If I was looking for a used phone with a keyboard, I would probably look some more for a TouchPro.
well typing is not that important to me.

Well in that case I would probably go with a Diamond 2 & load it with a 6.5.3 series ROM making it more UI touch friendly.
The Diamond is a nice sized device, has g-sensor & a practical notification LED.
Another plus is build quality is good & the Topaz forum is very active.
how about screen resolution?
which one has the more sharp colors and bright screen?

This might be possible through the kernel driver..

i wasnt sure if thats what he meant but i thought id rule out the obvious first
personally i find the touchpad speed spot on.
Little bump on his thread.
Imo, It's the acceleration that needs to be set to 0.
The TF ain't no laptop. If you insist on using the touchpad instead of the touchscreen, then go out and get yourself a nice laptop.
Why do people buy a tablet and then insisting on using it like a laptop? I don't get this.
Sometimes it can be convieniant to use the touch pad instead. For example to multitask between apps: typing into one, tap through to an IM via notification, then hit HOME on the keyboard and already have the touch pad cursor lined up over the icon for the app you were originally in.
I personally find it to be the best touch pad I've used, but then again I am weird and kind of like touch pads more than mice for non-gaming tasks.

For those people who complain about the touchpad, I give you 2 options to solve this huge life and death problem.
(1) Get an ipad.
(2) Get a screw driver and a pair of pliers and yank out the touchpad.

Gee what a helpful response... I can't believe the guy - like myself - had the nerve to think that the collective genius (and I'm being sincere there) of XDA could - or perhaps already did - come up with a way of decreasing the sensitivity of the track pad. Oh - the nerve of us for asking a question.
Seriously - responses like yours are patently unnecessary.
