GPS question - General Questions and Answers
I have a Cingular 8125, equivalent to the HTC Wizard, and I was wondering what I needed to do to use GPS on it. If i bought a bluetooth gps receiver would Google Maps or Windows Live Search be adequate for mapping my route? I do not have a data plan so I want something that I can use without having to be connected to the internet. Do GM and WLS require an internet connection even if you have a gps receiver connected?
somebody has got to know this...
yes i believe that google and ms use grps to get their maps to the gps
better off with tomtom or some other program which already have the maps
That's correct: the GPS receiver you connect will get your location from its satellites, but both GM and WLS have to pull the data used to draw the actual maps on your screen from the internet -- thus requiring a data connection (and an unlimited data plan, basically, because every time the map scrolls a bit, that's more data coming down... which adds up to massive amounts in a hurry!).
In order to not use any downloaded internet data, you'd have to use software like TomTom or Garmin, that comes with its own maps that you install directly onto your device or memory card as a data file.
ah I figured as much, I guess I have to buy some software. Does anybody know a rough estimate of how much memory the maps take up. For instance, I dont want to buy TomTom with the maps on a memory card because I already have a memory card that I use while I'm driving (for music mostly). If I buy TomTom on dvd can i transfer the maps to my current memory card fairly easily? Mostly I am just worried about the space I have. I pretty much just need a map of the United States and I have about 1.5 gb free, should this be enough for the map?

I use Ostia by PharosGPS in the states. You can download the entire USA highways map and then just the state regions you want to use. You don't have to load it all, so the storage is very configurable.

Nav Software for Touch Pro
For those like me who have had many failed attempts with TT6 and TT7 using legitimate software and maps I asked ALK (CoPilot) if their CoPilot 7 Touch Diamond edition would would on our devices and allow it to install to an SD card rather than internal memory. They replied that it could be manually copied. I ordered it and got the CD today. I copied the CD (DVD) to an SD card, and then moved the files in the Data directory into the CoPilot directory on the SD card. Inserting the SD card triggered the WM6 cab file to lauch and install the base application on the device. It's not TomTom but am well pleased with the results and a GPS satellite lock took around 2 minutes even from indoors. I've downloaded the Camera POI's from PocketGPSWorld and loaded them and all looks good. Money well spent I think
I just sent back my Garmin (have two units for the vehicles, but don't like that you can't move the data on the card to another, and the ones they sell have 400MB free). Do you have a link? I want to ensure I can get the US covered with their software. Right now, I'm just using Google Maps. It works well for freeware, but it has me at a location half mile away.

There is also an option to buy and download the diamond application from handango for the same price. Its a 275MB download for the UK maps. Copied the files onto SD card, which then autorun and loaded the main application (11mB) onto the main memory. At last, my estate is correct - the latest maps from tomtom still have non existant roads and roads that go through houses!!!! Full postcode support as well.
iGO8 is great too
Yes, but you are locked to the SD card they provide or is there a way around that and using my own SD card? BTJ
yes there is AFAIK I don't know more
TomTom can't find maps
Hello I've installed TomTom 6 and downloaded USA and Canada maps and copied to Storage Card. After runing TomTom 6, it couldn't find any map although I have USA and Canada maps in my storage card. What's wrong? Thanks
Tomtom is a bit specific where the maps have to be. The maps have to be in a folder one level deep now more no less. they cant in the root of the card or in say \TT6\maps\. Worse comes to worse try using the tomtom home application to install the maps.
memory map large files
Does anyone have a problem with maps over 100M loading into memory map, I have no issue using my old O2 orbit, with my new TD2 no maps will load over 100M maps under 100M load with no problem
Yeah I do, I thinks its got something to do with Windows 6.1 and not so much a memory map thing, its very annoying
I've just got my D2 so I've not loaded Memory Map onto it yet but it's one of the main reasons I got my D2 as I wanted a phone that could run it. I've had problems with big map files on Memory Map with my Dell Axim and got round them by exporting the map in two different sections. Less than ideal but it worked ok. I'll let you know how I get on with mine.
How the heck do you get CoPilot Nav to work?!?!?!
Have CoPilot Live, but it will not install the maps b/c "not enough space". I travel and and need the full US Map (think 1.2gb). Which obviously isn't going to fit on the internal. Whats the point of an app you can't even use??!? I tried searching on here and still don't get how your supposed to use maps from the external card. I see dozens of threads saying modify this, change the config to this, try to config this way etc. I copied the app folder to the external but still can't get maps to download, and if it did now I would have two installs of CoPilot (internal and external card).
Copilot GPS software management
Works great! Kinda a pain to manage maps due to small storage on 8GB model. Does anyone know of a way to use USB to store the Copilot software & maps? Have tried on a portable wi-fi Ravpower server but no go.
