MMORPG news: new WM title Mavec seeking content creators;TibaME is compatible with WM - General Topics

Mavec
As can be seen in THIS MoDaCo thread, there’s a brand new Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) title out there, Mavec. It’s quite a barebones game; you may still find it interesting, particularly if you would like to take part in content / mission creation.

(VGA screenshot)
The game is accessible for download HERE.
Registering is pretty easy: just fill in your info in the first and then, the second dialog like in HERE and HERE. Interestingly, while the game is stated to be free, THIS web page speaks of some monthly cost.
Verdict
There still isn’t much to do in the game and there are few people playing it. Its forum is also pretty deserted. Also, the client is pretty much unreliable: on my VGA x51v, it was VERY slow (and used the CPU at 100%) and, on my VGA HTC Universal, it crashed upon entering the game (as of the current, tested version 5). However, you may still want to give it a try – hopefully, it behaves better on lower-resolution Pocket PC’s / MS Smartphones. Yes, the game is compatible with the latter platform too.
TibaME
If you’ve been a "dumbphone" or a Symbian user, you most probably have heard of TibaME, a highly popular MMORPG game for both MIDlet-enabled Java and Symbian platforms. (It has just been featured HERE at AAS; the comments of the article are worth checking out).
As I haven’t discussed the game in the MIDlet Bible, I’ve given it a try. I’ve tested the current 1.51 Basic version accessible for direct download HERE - note that there may be better-behaving, non-basic versions; I haven’t tested them all. If you have the time, you may want to test them too – see THIS for a complete list of supported handset, some having more advanced versions.
(QVGA screenshot; the same on a 176*220 Smartphone is HERE)
Should you still not have an account, the game, as with Mavec, also allows for creating the account in-game as can be seen in HERE.
Compatibility
I had no problems running it on 176*220 MS Smartphones and QVGA Pocket PC’s / Smartphones. The game is runnable in Landscape mode. Please DO consult the MIDlet Bible (or, if you don’t want to be overwhelmed with information, “only” the “1.2.1 Installing a MIDlet Manager” section of my Opera Mini 4 tutorial) for more information on getting and installing Jbed. After installing Jbed, just click the above-linked JAR file and, as with Opera Mini 4, it’ll be deployed under Jbed. (This is all old hat and already known for you if you did install Opera Mini 4, the, in my opinion, currently the most useful and efficient Web browser for Windows Mobile.)
On VGA devices under Jbed (the most recommended MIDlet Manager), it refuses to run. I’ve also tested it under Jblend (because it allows for setting the RAM size); while the game started under it, it wasn’t able to use Net connections as can also be seen in HERE. Furthermore, as opposed to Jbed, only the numeric keys were usable on built-in (or external) thumbboards, making input pretty complicated. All in all, the game isn’t usable on VGA devices at all: neither under Jbed nor under Jblend.
Verdict
If you’re a fan of the game (or, just looking for a MMORPG client), make sure you give it a try.

Please always read the articles / tutorials I link from my articles - I link to my older articles in order to avoid having to repeat all the step-by-step tutorials over and over again, in my newer, related articles.
You'll need Jbed linked from the Opera Mini 4 review & tutorial.

Don't get offended if you don't receive an answer in an hour - it shows
1. people knowing the answer are away or
2. it'd require too much writing to explain everything already been elaborated on in some articles (for example, those of mine).
All in all, please make sure you devote some time to reading my articles. You won't find a better source of better-gathered, WM-related information anywhere, I think.
It takes some time to get up to speed with Windows Mobile but, in the end, you'll succeed.

The softkey support in TAO intent sucks - this is why I don't recommend it for gaming at all. (See my MIDlet Bible.)

ok. managed to get tibiaME to work with softkeys (javamagic) + jbed.
this looks more like an alpha/shareware product.can't see the bottom text since it was made into full screen.
theres no sound and exploration is severely restricted. you can't do anything beyond 2 islands and a few caves/crates.
sounds like SoL is still better at the moment even at beta as it seems like the full product at a zero price. chinese beat germans this time. sorry.

It's 2006, I've got 500MHz+, VGA, but STILL no decent IE?

PIE sucks balls.
The cache, since it still clearly loads each and every page repeatedly, doesn't work.
Modifying favourites is tedious.
No Multi-Tabs.
No Flash (was able to add that manually though).
No way of remembering what I've previously entered in forms.
No easy "search text within a page".
It really makes thing more tedious than they need t be.
Enter MINIMO!
Well, no.
Tried it, and although it's only Beta, I'd still prefer to watch paint dry than watch this chug along.
C'mon, someone release a decent browser! Where's Opera??
belfast-biker: knocking PIE is one thing, but what about full blown IE on the PC!? At least we know tabbed browsing is coming on the PC though. But as written elsewhere, if MS makes anything too good, they get knocked for anti-competitive practice. So this suggests that if we use their standard products, then we're also happy to use sub-optimal software
I was writing to Buzz yesterday that when you read up on it, there's so much potential in the OS under the skin, but as implemented in the standard device it's fairly conservative. If you delve into some of the stuff that can be done with the OS, it's amazing how much of it is tethered to the basics.
Personally I'm quite happy with the standard PIM and OS functionality, but then I also like peeling it apart for my own customisations. It's unlikely MS is going to improve PIE much beyond minor incremental improvements because if the PC version isn't, the "baby" version surely won't.
On the PC I wrote my own browser to satisfy my needs, and I think unfortunately the PPC will need the same treatment. But at least now we've got the choice of PIE, ftxPBrowser, Opera, Minimo and Netfront, amongst others. I don't think we should expect MS to improve PIE, but those third party suppliers certainly should certainly be in a position to address its weaknesses.

Well I'm certainly not one to knock MS for writing good software - forcing people to use it, exclude others, that's different - but for writing good software? Never any hassle from me!
As for the choices, ftx doesn't work apparently with WM5.0, a compatible Opera isn't out yet, Minimo is incredibly non-responsive most of the time and pretty, but pretty useless too, and Netfront, haven't tried that yet but even Access haven't verified it yet for WM5 really.
Imagine if the XBOX360 were released, and the only first person shooter available was Wolfenstein? This is practically the same thing! Were the developers not told that MS were releasing a new OS or something? You yourself have written many apps for WM5.0 so far, why are the big commercial boys seemingly so far behind? Didn't the prospect of being the creator of the first and best fully featured, VGA, fast, stable browser appeal to them?

ftx certainly works for me on WM5. It's far from perfect, but it's very useful for multitab browsing, especially in VGA. I prefer MultiIE on WM2003, and look forward to the WM5 version.
Opera is out, at least for WM5. Some people seem to be liking it.
Minimo is certainly far from finished I understand. I think people might be looking at the problem the wrong way round if they try to squeeze Mozilla into the PPC. They need to start with the rendering engine and strip off everything else; that's what I did for my desktop browser. The PPC version needs to be simple for the CPU. But the current version is an Alpha I think?
Netfront: I tried it once, but not since. The technical preview is out for WM5 I believe, and it will have proper java support, but again, if you're using java on a PDA, your asking for slowness I think But java+flash, Netfront is probably the best way to go IMHO. Will have to give it a go one day!

Opera - "Opera Mobile™ for PPC and Windows Mobile 5.0 will come soon" If it's out and working, their marketing guys are doing a piss poor job.
ftxbrowser - A glance on google only brings up people who have found that it doesn't work, or downloads referring to WM2003. If you've a link to one that works, I'd appreciate it, wouldn't mind giving it a go if it has your seal of approval!
Minimo, as you say, it's probably an alpha, we probably shouldn't expect too much.
Netfront - people are reporting that 3.3 crashes if you go to a link that opens in a new window.

FTX: can't say I did anything special, just installed the WM2003 cab. Works fine for me. I hope. I never had any problems with it, it's just not particularly userfriendly right now, but the basic idea works fine. I never used it on Wm2003, so it was news to me!

Minimo. Yep, some way to go.
Netfront. Same, technical preview. I'm sure they'll get it sorted, it's sure to be a money spinner!
I think Opera's your best bet for now...but even then, it doesn't address many of your concerns in the first post!

Just read that thread, think I'll pass on Opera for now - I'll go investigate ftx!
As is increasingly the case lately, I'm in your debt!

The ONLY REAL guide to Sega Genesis / MegaDrive emulation on Windows Mobile

The desktop gaming console Sega Genesis / Sega Mega Drive (from now on: MD) was pretty famous in the late eighties and early nineties and has received many quality titles, most importantly, the Sonic series, which are still way better than any native Windows Mobile platformers (except for, maybe, BoneyBoy). Now that, just as with NeoGeo / CPS (see article HERE), some REALLY excellent and almost flawless emulators have been released in the last few months, I found it necessary to devote an entire article to playing MD games under Windows Mobile. (Needless to say, there are no other REAL and up-to-date articles on this subject.)
Should you bother?
The answer is Yes! While the Genesis is definitely old hardware, it has some really excellent titles not quite matched by any ntive (non-emulated) Windows Mobile titles: for example, the above-mentioned Sonic series is REALLY good. In addition, you WILL want to give a try to other titles like Xenon 2 (remember to enable the in-game music – it’s disabled by default) and Risky Woods. The latter two also had PC ports – you may well know these titles already. (I loved them back in 1990-1992 and have spent a lot of time playing them. I’ve even bought the Gameboy version of Xenon 2!)
Now that there are some excellent and, what is more, FREE emulators for Windows Mobile, it’s no longer impossible to play these games full screen, with enabled sound, decent controls and with speed no worse than with the original console. Give these emulators and games a try – I’m absolutely sure you’ll love them!
Again and again, the emulators are free; so are the games. You should, however, own the original cartridges so that you can (legally) download the ROM game images off the Web.
First and foremost, you must know of two major emulators, Masterall's PicoDrive (current version: 0.052) and n0p’s Genesis Plus (current version: 1.06). These two emulators will be all you need for playing any games on your mobile device.
PicoDrive
First, let’s take a look at the BEST MD emulator available today, PicoDrive. It’s available for download HERE, at the bottom of the first post. (You’ll need to register yourself in the Modaco forum to be able to download the file.) Note that the FinalBurn homepage has an old and almost useless version (0.030).

It’s developed by Masterall, the author of the Windows Mobile port of the excellent, high-quality NeoGeo and CPS emulator FinalBurn Alpha introduced and explained HERE. As the user interface (UI) is very similar to that of FinalBurn Alpha, I don’t explain it here: once you get known to FinalBurn Alpha, you’ll also find the UI of PicoDrive familiar. There are very few differences; the most important of them is the lack of invisible screen controls. Hope this will be fixed in a subsequent release.
Please also consult the comparison / feature chart of the article for usage tips and tricks.
Genesis Plus
Genesis Plus is another, slightly slower but somewhat better thought-out (for example, its active screen tap areas don’t take up any screen estate, unlike with PicoDrive) emulator.
It’s very simple to use: you just download the GenPP.v1.06.7z archive file from HERE, uncompress all the files and transfer them to your mobile device and start genpp.exe. As you may run into download problems (or, you will want to decompress the file with the built-in ZIP support of Windows Mobile 5+ or Resco File Explorer), I’ve also made the archive available as a standard ZIP file on my database back end HERE.
After starting genpp.exe, you’ll be prompted to select a ROM file to load. (It, as with PicoDrive, supports compressed ROM images too. Note that PicoDrive even supports RAR’ed images – using RAR results in an even less storage memory need than with ZIP.) Select it and, then, just start playing. At the bottom of the screen, you will have access to some functionality; of course, the hardware buttons can also be used to control games (Action being mapped to Start by default).
Unlike with all the other emulators, it can’t be configured at all (except for setting the frame drop parameters and disabling the Z80 emulation; you most probably won’t want to do either) in the GUI as can be seen in this menu screenshot. However, upon the first run, it’ll create a file named genpp.cfg. If you directly edit it, you can fine-tune a lot of parameters, including hardware button assignment; see the comparison / feature chart for more info.
Not recommended emulators
MorphGear 2.4.0.9
(Main page HERE; while the emulator has commercial modules, the Genesis emulation is free; its (separate) homepage is HERE. Download the main MG CAB HERE and the Genesis CAB HERE. Install both.)
This emulator, as usual, is pretty useless and long superseded by the two above-introduced emulators in every respects. There is absolutely no point in bothering with it.
Mobile Drive 1.1a
(alternative download HERE and HERE for the two versions)
This emulator is not recommended either. It has two versions: the Cyclone-based is faster but less compatible, the Musashi-based is even slower but more compatible. As both PicoDrive and Genesis Plus are FAR more compatible with existing titles, FAR faster and FAR better, there is absolutely no point in bothering with these two titles.
PocketGenesis v1.0 (Beta 2)
This is a long-forgotten & abandoned project; its old homepage no longer exists, only an archive here with the 1.01 ARM / MIPS versions. Version 1.0b2 is ONLY available HERE, in Michu’s archive. It wasn’t able to run any of the ROM I’ve thrown it at.
Finally,
darcNESCE
This project has been discontinued too (for example, its homepage no longer exists either). It seems to be entirely incompatible with the better games.
The feature / comparison / compatibility chart
It’s available HERE. Don’t forget to check it out for
some usage tips (how some things should be configured / accessed; make sure you follow the screenshot links to see them)
real-world, dependable compatibility reports
The rows are pretty easy to understand (particularly if you’ve already read my other emulation-related articles); therefore, I won’t elaborate on them in here. Let me know (post a public message / request) if you REALLY don’t understand something.
Hi Menneisyys,
Great guide you've written here, as are all your other guides. Sorry for digging up an old thread I'm currently trying Genesis Plus on my PDA and it ran very well. Is there a way to have soft keys for the gamepad buttons while using landscape? I saw some screens on the n0p website with buttons ABC on the bottom, but I only have the quicksave/quickload buttons on mine. Any ideas? Thank you.
sorry for bringing up a old thread but can anyone help with the above question plz? This is the best Sege Emulator since all my games work and sound is perfect. Picodrive don't work on some games and the sound can be bad even with messing with sound settings. I figured out how to map my buttons by using the .cfg but I don't know what numbers to use to map to my I,O,P on my mogul.

Windows Mobile News as of 11/02/2007

As you may have noticed, I’ve started working on the Multimedia Bible, the premier resource of all info on multimedia playback, streaming etc. I don’t know when I get it ready. I’ll announce when the first chart versions are ready for public scrutiny.
After some 13-14 months of the 2.x -> 3.x series jump, the excellent S-K folks have just announced they will release a brand new, 4.0 version of SKTools, the, IMHO, best (albeit a bit overwhelming and, because of its capabilities and complexity, hard-to-discover) all-in-one systems management tool available for Windows Mobile. The new version will have the following new features:
- Cab Manager: SKTools can show all CAB,CPF,TSK files on device, show content (with full names, installation path, registry keys, shortcuts, _setup.xml), extract with full names, install to ANY location (full installation made by SKTools) for WM5/ WM6; SKTools can be associated with CAB files
- Replaced ROM Files: show which ROM files have been replaced by another version, show version and date of these files; the user can see if the "newest" file (the file having the latest time stamp) is, in reality, older than others and, therefore, remove it.
- Move Data: move application, folders, files to any location with automatic (!) registry and shortcut modification (and other data about files and their path)
- Storage Analyzer: show what files and folders (by types, attributes, ...) are stored on the device
The open beta starts next week (I already have a pre-beta); I’ll let you know when it becomes ready.
I’ve reported on LogMeIn Rescue Mobile more than two months ago. Now, a similar product, LogMeIn Hamachi has also been released, which – as opposed to ALL the other, similar tools – even the otherwise BEST Pocket Controller by SOTI – uses HTTP(S) tunneling for remotely controlling your Windows Mobile handheld from a remote desktop PC. This means any Windows Mobile device can be accessed, even ones behind firewalls and/or in NAT’ed networks (like about 60-70% of current mobile networks). See THIS and THIS MoDaCo threads for more info.
Spb has just released an updated version of their flagship, brand new product, Spb Pocket Plus 4.0, of which I’ve reviewed some modules HERE and HERE.
The dialup-sharing-over-Wi-Fi (which is of extreme importance with non-BT DUN and/or non-BT PAN-capable devices like, for example, Symbian smartphones (neither of them) or other Windows Mobile PDA’s based on the MS BT stack (no PAN support)) method (see THIS) has been GREATLY enhanced and automatized. See XDA-Dev forum member TalynOne’s excellent tutorial and tools HERE.
Moving to dialup and DUN: XDA-Dev forum member Technology has come up with a decent tool for making it work on the T-Mobile Dash.
CrazySoft released another puzzle adventure game
Their last “adventure”, “Lost in the Pyramid”, was a complete disaster. The new game is certainly MUCH better, albeit I’ve found some of the steps similarly illogical and/or plain stupid (for example, dying right away if you smash a tile; getting caught by the guards if you, for example, exit your prison through the window etc.). It’s still a far cry away from “real” (even emulated – see my emulation-related roundups and Bibles HERE) adventures like those of Legend Entertainment or Fade Team (Fade / Acedior), but you may want to give it a try nonetheless. Be warned: the trial can be played through in 10-15 minutes and I’m not really sure whether the full game is really worth the money. I’ll wait for either Eric’s or Ben’s reviews; I definitely won’t request a review copy (because I don’t really like biting the feeding hand, which, I think, may happen this time too.)
Therefore, just some remarks: The game is multiplatform and supports both VGA and QVGA on the Pocket PC. I’ve tested it on both VGA and QVGA Pocket PC’s, QVGA Smartphones and the Symbian S60v3 Nokia N95. With the latter two platforms, it’s pretty hard to control because of the lack of the touchscreen (and a sophisticated control system). At least you can use the 3…0 buttons to quickly access the inventory items.
UPDATE (11/03/2007): Oops, I’ve forgotten to tell you the name of CrazySoft game (see the last bullet above): Final Battle. It’s available HERE. You can already read a review of it for example HERE. Note that it’s a Symbian-related review. As Symbian has even less games (not taking Java MIDlets into account, where it’s much-much stronger, let alone the forthcoming N-Gage Platform, which, as of now, is slated for a December release) than Windows Mobile, the review is pretty much positive. I’m not absolutely sure it’d stand so well against the Windows Mobile competition, particularly if you take into account the platform’s (compared to Symbian, much better) ability to emulate platforms with tons of high-quality adventure games (for example, MS-DOS) and having native adventure engines like ScummVM (ok, Symbian (including even S60v3) also has it) and other interpreters like those of Magnetic Scrolls.

An example of the guard’s catching you
Smashing your hand 1 2
End of demo (again, the demo of the game is VERY short: I've managed to reach it in about 4-5 minutes after starting to play!)
Finally, as with their previous title “Lost in the Pyramid”, this game is also suffering from the same problem: it takes the operating system a lot of time to find the icon of the game. The CrazySoft folks should fix this issue as soon as possible.
UPDATE (later on 11/03/2007): Because of the insignificance of the release, I don’t devote a separate post/threads to the next game. Exosyphen Studios has released Hacker Evolution for the Pocket PC (no Smartphone version is available), following the May release of the desktop original.
(VGA screenshot; as can be seen, there’s no hi-res support)
Unfortunately, I’ve found the game almost exactly the same as their much older, but VERY similar title, BS Hacker Mobile Console, reviewed HERE. If you don’t believe they’re almost exactly the same game (except for the different colors and the slightly more on-screen buttons) just compare, in addition to the GUI, the built-in help to that of BS Hacker Mobile Console. See? It's, gaming-wise, is exactly the same as the older title. In addition, it is, as with BS Hacker Mobile Console, a much-much worse, much less interesting version of the original desktop Windows version - this is how a desktop conversion should NOT be done.
All in all, I in no way recommend this game, particularly not if you’ve already purchased the very similar BS Hacker Mobile Console.
More info / discussion in THIS PG.org thread.
Menneisyys sorry to "interrupt" you, but we are in SMARTPHONE area and we are looking for SMARTPHONE stuff, not PPC. So please post only smartphone related articles/news/posts.
This is not the first time I see cross-posted topics and PPC related posts on Smartphone area.
Thank you.

Several (of course, not all) bullets also applies to the MS Smartphone platform (serach for the word Smartphone); this is why I've also cross-posted this news item to the SP General forum.
UPDATE (11/13/2007): in THIS German-language PocketPlayers.info review (published after mine), Hacker Evolution is also trashed. (Let me know if you need help in translation - I assume everybody either knows German or at least knows Babelfish / Google Translator.) This shows I was 100% right about NOT recommending the game at all.
Note that the thread also states exosyphen Studios is planning to release a FULL WM port of their desktop games. This is certainly VERY good news.

Legendary game Another World (& Flashback) released for Windows Mobile – for free!
Many of you may already have heard of Another World (also known as Out of this World in the US and Outer World in Japan; Wiki page HERE; Abandonia page HERE), which was one of the best vector-graphic action-adventure games back in 1991-1992.

Compatibility
It’s only compatible with WM5+ and QVGA devices, it seems. According to iPmart(R) Network, it’s also compatible with touchscreen-less MS Smartphones– I’ve left my HTC Vox at work so I couldn’t test this.
It won’t run on VGA devices (tested on the VGA iPAQ 210) because of major screen distortion. Note that it uses landscape mode by default. You can also switch to Portrait mode (which is preferable on models with serious Landscape polarization issues) in the menu, which is definitely a plus.
Unfortunately, it isn’t compatible with WM2003(SE) (I’ve tested this). I had no speed problems running it on even the slowest, 195 MHz TI OMAP 850-based HTC Wizard. That is, it runs OK on all platforms. Unfortunately, as is the case with most Windows Mobile titles, it uses the CPU at 100%, which means heavily decreased battery life on most CPU platforms. If you do need to run it on non-QVGA or pre-WM5 devices, you’ll need to find one of the console ports (for example, the Sega Mega Drive version) and use, for example, SmartGear (currently, the best non-SNES / non-GBA emulator compatible with practically everything and using very little battery) to run it. Note that I haven’t tested the compliance of the MegaDrive version with SmartGear; if it’s incompatible, give a try to other Mega Drive emulators (see the dedicated Bible HERE). You may also want to give a try to the SNES version (see the SNES Emulation Bible HERE) in these cases. However, I seriously doubt the latter will work flawlessly on slower systems – if at all.
Downloading, getting
Interestingly, the official homepage of the original developer doesn’t have it (not even the French version – I’ve checked it because the second-language versions sometimes don’t have the same info as the original-language ones. For example, the French version of pocketpcfreewares.com lists the also-free FlashBack, the successor of Another World; the English version doesn’t). Neither does Telcogames (who bought the original creator, Magic Productions) – they only have the commercial Symbian version online.
I couldn’t find it on ClickGamer, PocketPCFreewares or Handango either. The only places I could find it for download are XDA-Developers and iPmart(R) Network – see THIS and THIS threads, respectively.
If you download it from the XDA-Devs thread, all you need to do is just tapping the CAB file to be installed.
The desktop version
I’ve also tested the (commercial) upgraded, Windows-conpatible and high-resolution desktop version on my HP TC1100 tablet. Worked flawlessly – if you’re a fan of the game and would like to play it on your desktop in high resolution (unlike the 320*200 resolution of the original), make sure you give it a try. The trial version is available HERE.
The sequel – Flashback – is also available for free!
I’ve already pointed out the PocketPCFreewares page of Flashback, the successor of Another World (Wiki page HERE). I have some good news for you: it’s also available for free for Windows Mobile (even for WM2003(SE)). The only difference is that you’ll need the original game files in order to run it (which are already included in the Windows Mobile version of Another World). Should you not have them, they’re available HERE. Note that the – discontinued, which may mean it gets closed sooner or later – English page of the latter title is HERE. I haven’t personally tested it – hope it works OK.
Verdict
Go get it even if you don’t know the original game – it’s an excellent title, you’ll love it! Also remember: it’s free, unlike on Symbian or desktop Windows.
unfortunately it doesn´t run on my xda diamond

yup, it doesn't, as has been explained in my article (see the VGA-specific remarks)
Hello!, I am a new user. Sorry for my bad english. I tested Flashback on my HTC Jade and it runs OK but I can't make Conrad to run and other functions because i can't configure the buttons of my HTC. any solutions, maybe a patch or something to use de volume buttons, etc.?
i dont understand why you posted it here, when i already had a thread for it?...then on my original thread you linked to your new (copied) thread...lol, kinda lame don't you think? trying to claim ownership. especially for a mod to do this.

You've been holding that in for a while, eh? Feel better, lol?
I didn't find this until just the other day...I guess I didn't think I needed to make a habit of checking up on other users to see if they were copying my posts...not exactly a common practice.

[APP REQ] Formula 1 Live Timing

The new 2009 formula 1 season is on its way and it would be nice to be able to follow a race on our phones. So far i have only seen a java application that does this job but the resolution is far too small
(Live Yamigo - check it out here http://live.yamigo.com/F1Servlet/)
I have no idea about developing so, does any developer want to develop this for us? I'd gladly assist in the graphics work.
Functions:
Live timing
Lap chart
Comentaries Feed
Weather Screen
vga res & other
Im sure there are much more people interested in such an application.
You are right, I'm interested!
Sorry I can't develop it, though..
Please post questions and/or requests in the Questions and Answers section of the forum. This thread will probably be moved to that section. Thanks.

I'm interested too...
But before starting a dev, we need to know where to find datas... I don't know websites that send such informations...
Do you mean the live timing? If so you can get it free from http://www.formula1.com. This uses a java applet to show lap times etc, I also have this on when im watching the live qualifying/race.
yes live timing..i also tried that on my touch pro but its very small resolution and it only takes up a small portion of the screen..making it extremely hard to read..id love to see this developed for vga too...
Hi guys,
I've just tested the service, and it works well. But as already said, its so small resolution.
I've downloaded the LARGE version (http://live.yamigo.com/F1Servlet/dl/), even that is small for my HTC Touch Diamond. Its probably 320x240.
Anyway its the only way to have the F1 Live Timing. Thanks for the intel.
AleX
The large version works fine on my HTC Advantage X7500. But then I didn't install any high res applications. So perhaps that's why the application displays larger on my device. It's reasonably close to full screen.
I do keep getting internet connection security dialogs (need to click yes everytime it downloads a bit of data). Is there a wat to prevent that? Can I mark the application as trusted or something?

You would need to upgrade the JAVA version on your phone if you have a wm 6.1/6.5. If you have a version of WM prior to that then I am afraid that you will just have to keep clicking on connection dialog iirc.
I will ask a couple of lads at work to see what they can do (if they can be bothered that is) as I work as IT support for a JAVA house that specialises in connected apps and I know quite a few of the developers like F1

I've got the "intent Midlet Manager" version 11.1.7.1036 on it. I think that's the most recent version.
I've found a workaround though. I wrote the yamigo developers and they indicated that I should get only 2 dialogs. Then I found that indeed I got only 2 and it kept stable after that. Then I switched apps and the dialogs returned.
Seems like it only works when I have my internet connection closed before I open the java midlet and then let the midlet connect.
Weird, but it works.

I once decompiled the original F1 live timing application. Not sure if it's still that easy, but I could read the source for the entire java application. I used that to work out the live datastream. Never got around to writing the WM app that I planned though.
Here a screenshot from the application working on my device:

Last summer I made live-f1 version that works somehow in HTC hermes running WM6.0 (HTC original). It is based on the live-f1 program source code that works in linux xterm. It has WM gui (without any touch specific features). Features include only timing data, fastest lap, and comments. Timing screen is scrolled with arrow keys.
I was thinking about delayed timing feature next, but due to FIA favoring double diffuser Teams, I have not had motivation to make that part.
Open Source live timing library written in .NET
If anyone is interested, I've written a library - Open Source in C# - to receive the live timing data from the server used by the official live timing app. Obviously it's reverse engineered, so I haven't yet done all of the data. However the interesting stuff is done (i.e. not the weather info).
Note: It's currently targeted at the desktop .NET framework, but shouldn't take much effort to port it to the compact framework if any one is interested.
So..if anyone would like to develop some app's I've also included some existing recorded data that can be 'played' back using the library's simulator component so you won't have to wait for an actual race event to see if your app works.
It can be found here Live Timing Home Page (http://livetiming.turnitin.co.uk)
Thanks,
Liam.
p.s. If you'd like to contribute your app's and or code to the project, let me know and I'll add you in.
I have just looked on the website of post #1 and this is still 2009. I was wondering waht offerings are there for Formual 1 for 2010 for the HD2.

Same here, trying to figure out a way to have live timing on my HD2
Official app soon available? http://www.formula1.com/mobile_services/live_timing.html
Heres the official jad file. Its for the HD and i cant get it to work on my Diamond 2, so cant let you know if it works or not.
works on first run, causes error on second launch, have to re-install!!
It's now not on the f1 website again, I guess they realise there is an issue with it and are trying to fix it?
I'm still laughing at those with an iphone who have to pay £20 for the official app and we get it for free!!
I've downloaded the "HTC HD2" version, and it isn't working at all with jbed:
E: 2java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
But, with jblend works
They have been putting it on the web and removing it since yesterday... a little bit more testing wasn't been that bad
Edit: I forget to mention that, even it's working with jblend... i cannot sign-in with my email/password... i've been forced to "Try" the application
What phone, what java version?
I am unable to run it on Diamond using JBed. Anybody succeeded with this. If yes, what midlet manager is able to run this applet? Thanks.
