Many of you may already have heard of Another World (also known as Out of this World in the US and Outer World in Japan; Wiki page HERE; Abandonia page HERE), which was one of the best vector-graphic action-adventure games back in 1991-1992.

Compatibility
It’s only compatible with WM5+ and QVGA devices, it seems. According to iPmart(R) Network, it’s also compatible with touchscreen-less MS Smartphones– I’ve left my HTC Vox at work so I couldn’t test this.
It won’t run on VGA devices (tested on the VGA iPAQ 210) because of major screen distortion. Note that it uses landscape mode by default. You can also switch to Portrait mode (which is preferable on models with serious Landscape polarization issues) in the menu, which is definitely a plus.
Unfortunately, it isn’t compatible with WM2003(SE) (I’ve tested this). I had no speed problems running it on even the slowest, 195 MHz TI OMAP 850-based HTC Wizard. That is, it runs OK on all platforms. Unfortunately, as is the case with most Windows Mobile titles, it uses the CPU at 100%, which means heavily decreased battery life on most CPU platforms. If you do need to run it on non-QVGA or pre-WM5 devices, you’ll need to find one of the console ports (for example, the Sega Mega Drive version) and use, for example, SmartGear (currently, the best non-SNES / non-GBA emulator compatible with practically everything and using very little battery) to run it. Note that I haven’t tested the compliance of the MegaDrive version with SmartGear; if it’s incompatible,give a try to other Mega Drive emulators (see the dedicated Bible HERE). You may also want to give a try to the SNES version (see the SNES Emulation Bible HERE) in these cases. However, I seriously doubt the latter will work flawlessly on slower systems – if at all.
Downloading, getting
Interestingly, the official homepage of the original developer doesn’t have it (not even the French version – I’ve checked it because the second-language versions sometimes don’t have the same info as the original-language ones. For example, the French version of pocketpcfreewares.com lists the also-free FlashBack, the successor of Another World; the English version doesn’t). Neither does Telcogames (who bought the original creator, Magic Productions) – they only have the commercial Symbian version online.
I couldn’t find it on ClickGamer, PocketPCFreewares or Handango either. The only places I could find it for download are XDA-Developers and iPmart(R) Network – see THIS and THIS threads, respectively.
If you download it from the XDA-Devs thread, all you need to do is just tapping the CAB file to be installed.
The desktop version
I’ve also tested the (commercial) upgraded, Windows-conpatible and high-resolution desktop version on my HP TC1100 tablet. Worked flawlessly – if you’re a fan of the game and would like to play it on your desktop in high resolution (unlike the 320*200 resolution of the original), make sure you give it a try. The trial version is available HERE.
The sequel – Flashback – is also available for free!
I’ve already pointed out the PocketPCFreewares page of Flashback, the successor of Another World (Wiki page HERE). I have some good news for you: it’s also available for free for Windows Mobile (even for WM2003(SE)). The only difference is that you’ll need the original game files in order to run it (which are already included in the Windows Mobile version of Another World). Should you not have them, they’re available HERE. Note that the – discontinued, which may mean it gets closed sooner or later – English page of the latter title is HERE. I haven’t personally tested it – hope it works OK.
Verdict
Go get it even if you don’t know the original game – it’s an excellent title, you’ll love it! Also remember: it’s free, unlike on Symbian or desktop Windows.

Hello!, I am a new user. Sorry for my bad english. I tested Flashback on my HTC Jade and it runs OK but I can't make Conrad to run and other functions because i can't configure the buttons of my HTC. any solutions, maybe a patch or something to use de volume buttons, etc.?

i dont understand why you posted it here, when i already had a thread for it?...then on my original thread you linked to your new (copied) thread...lol, kinda lame don't you think? trying to claim ownership. especially for a mod to do this.

First playable alpha of the 3D-accelerated Doom clone out!

Ever wanted to play id Software’s evergreen title, Doom, on your 3D accelerated (currently, two models are capable of this: the Dell Axim x50v and x51v; but, in the near future, the O2 Flame will also have 3D support) Pocket PC? Now you can!
I’ve often elaborated (see for example this) on the forthcoming Doom clone DoomGLES. Fortunately, the author works really quick and has just released a playable alpha version.
Compatibility
Currently, it’s only compatible with WM5-upgraded Dell Axim x50v and x51v. It will NOT run on WM2003SE-based x50v’s. I’ve tested the title on a freshly hard reset x51v with the A12 ROM.
Installation
If you don’t have a real Doom around, you need to do the following:
create a subdirectory (it can be named anything - not necessarily “Doom”) on your storage card (you’d be better using a fast, well-optimized card because you will end up having to copy numerous files on it, which can take ages with non-optimized ones. Please see this article for more information on all this.)
download this file and decompress its contents into the Doom home directory on your card
download this file and decompress its content, doom1.wad, to the Doom directory
download this file and decompress its content, a subdirectory named OpenGLES, into the Doom directory. Make sure you don’t step into the subdirectory when copying stuff – that is, there must exist an OpenGLES directory inside your Doom home directory
If you do have the commercial version of Doom, instead of following bullet 3 and 4 (you will still need the contents of the ZIP file linked in bullet 2 in a directory), you will need to copy the doom.wad file to the main Doom directory of your storage card and extract the contents of this file to there.
Visuals
They are the same as with DoomGL and are, as far as resolution and lighting effects are concerned, way better than the original Doom you may have played back in 1993 (see for example the screenshots here to see how it looked like).
The speed of the game is extremely good – the animation has never become jerky.
Map
The map is also accessible (via the Home button by default).
Sounds
Unfortunately, there’s no music support, which is a pity because Doom had excellent music. Back in 1993, it was a treat to listen to the music on my, then, high-end Gravis Ultrasound (Classic) sound card.
As far as sounds are concerned, they are, as they should be, fully stereo. That is, you can hear the direction of an enemy.
Controls
There aren’t problems in this department either. You control the movement with the D-pad and the stylus as in most other Pocket PC FPS games; use the Action button to fire, the Messaging button to bring up the menu, the Contacts button to activate a door / switch etc.
You can redefine all these controls in the configuration file doomgles.cfg. It’s, fortunately, well-explained in the readme file; you must directly enter key codes in the file, which can’t cause you problems if you’ve already read my related articles on how the Windows Mobile operating system handles keycodes.
Problems
Unfortunately, the shareware version played on the A12 x51v just crashes on Level 2 when, behind the red door, after switching on the hidden switch in the room filled with poison, you use the lift packed with health packs to go down to the room full of enemies. I’ve tested this two times and I’ve run into the crash exactly at this position.
I don’t know whether the commercial version WAD file is also affected by this problem.
The future?
There will be implemented a lot of stuff; for example, multiplayer support, which is great given that, currently, there are no 3D accelerator-optimized FPS games with multiplayer capabilities. It's only the forthcoming Call of Duty 2 that is supposed to receive multiplayer support.
Verdict
Go give it a try if you’re a Doom freak and have an x51v or an WM5-upgraded x50v; you’ll like it!

UPDATE (12/18/2006): version 0.03 has just been released!
It was only few days ago that the first playable version of the 2700G-enabled DoomGLES was released and, two days ago, 0.02. Now, a new version is out. It's available here.
Also, AximSite forum member thebigbread has pointed out you can avoid the shareware bug I've described in my previous article by just keeping the map on while you go down in the elevator.

There is no comparison. Software and hardware 3D acceleration jsut can't be compared - the new, 2700G-enabled version is so much better. If you have a 2700G device, go for the new one.

I don't think so (if you want to play 3D games, get an iPhone 3G / iPod Touch 2G instead). However, give it a try yourself to find out yourself.

Enigmo-alike Gloop Zero ported from the Palm/Zodiac to the Pocket PC!

Ever played Aspyr’s Enigmo (note that Aspyr has removed their Enigmo page in the meantime, this is why I’m giving you a Handango link. See for the 3D Accelerated Pocket PC Games and Demos Bible Part II for more info and the alternative review in German here)? Wanted something similar for the Pocket PC, running on all Pocket PC models, not only on Intel 2700G-enabled ones? (Unfortunately, you must have a 2700G-based Pocket PC – that is, currently, a Dell Axim x50v or x51v – to run Enigmo.) AeonFlame’s Gloop Zero may be of interest to you!

Availability, compatibility
It’s available here. The full version costs $14.99; there is also a trial version.
The game is compatible with WM2003+ operating systems (this means it’s NOT compatible with PPC 2002 – I’ve tested this). I had no problems running it on my QVGA/VGA WM2003(SE) / WM5 test devices – it ran OK on all of them.
Visuals
Pretty good, albeit nothing extraordinary. There’s no Hi-Res VGA support. The game is Landscape-only.
Sounds / music
Absolutely nothing. This is a BIG problem – the Zodiac version has nice in-game music. The developer should implement music as soon as possible. However, with the hack I've found out, you'll be able to play the original music in the background - see the next section.
Do you still want the original music on the Pocket PC?
If you have a compatible (Palm OS 5 and HiRes(+)) Palm OS device too, download the original Palm OS demo, install it onto your Palm device (installing will ONLY work through HotSync; direct PRC install off a storage card doesn't work), go to \PALM\Programs\GloopZero-GLPZ\data\other\music\ on your storage card and copy the files to your Pocket PC. These are midi files; this means you'll need to have a midi-enabled local player on your Pocket PC if you want to listen to just these files while playing the game. Please read the Midi Bible for more information on all these questions. Fortunately, the game lets for playing anything in the background - so, this hack will work.
This will only work if you have a Palm OS device - the Pocket PC version doesn't have these files and, as far as I know, it's not possible (without some elaborate hacking) to extract the original files from the given installer file.
Compared to Enigmo...
There is, in my opinion, no comparison as far as graphics and sound / music are concerned. Enigmo has very nice music and sound effects and is, of course, high-resolution. Even after dumbing down (which unfortunately, I don’t think will ever happen as Aspyr doesn’t seem to support the game any more, let alone release a new, non-2700G-only version of it) not to require hardware OpenGLES support (2700G, GoForce), it would still remain, in my opinion, better than Gloop Zero.
Playability-wise, on the other hand, Gloop Zero is a bit easier / faster in my opinion – with Enigmo, you need to position the gadgets far more thoroughly than with this title. With Gloop Zero, after deciding for a strategy on a given level, sometimes you “only” need to do some drawing with the stylus and all is set. With Enigmo, this takes far more time. That is, if you find Enigmo requiring far too much time to solve a given puzzle and want something similar, you may find Gloop Zero very cool.
Compared to the Palm OS version...
Unfortunately, the regular Palm OS version (I've played it on my Palm Tungsten T3) also lacks both sounds / music and HiRes+ graphics (it uses 320*320 in Portrait - that is, HiRes, without the + - only).
Verdict
Well, if you’re lucky enough to have a Dell Axim x50v or x51v and have already given Enigmo a try (if you haven’t, do it now – it’s a masterpiece!), I think you’ll be disappointed with Gloop Zero at first – Enigmo is definitely better-looking and -sounding. It's only because of the much faster gameplay that you may want to prefer this title to Enigmo.
If you, on the other hand, don’t have any 3D accelerated Pocket PC devices and want to have an entertaining game that will keep you and your brain occupied, you definitely want to consider giving the trial of this game a try – it is pretty cool, despite the major flaws (no music / sound and, to a lesser degree, no high-resolution support). Remember, again, that you can "hack" the original midi music files out of the Palm OS version if you really want to listen to them while playing.

RealDice has specialized in producing Pocket PC and MS Smartphone multiplayer table / card games. In addition to PDAMill and some other developers (like pocketadventures.com), they should be the first game developer to check out when looking for multiplayer-enabled Backgammon, Chess, Domino, Mahjong, Texas Hold’em Poker and Sudoku games.

I’ve long been planning a generic update of my last RealDice review published last May. Now that the developer has (for the most part) fixed the CPU usage bug I’ve discovered in the early versions and has also come out with some brand new titles (for example, the last one, Dominoes has just been released; it’s so new it doesn’t even have an official section on RealDice’s homepage as yet and is only accessible on third-party distributors like ClickGamer), I knew I can no longer wait.
Availability
Currently, five of the six RealDice titles are available on the official homepage of RealDice. Note that there aren’t direct links to (three-day) trial downloads in there; you must select the download type (there are, for Pocket PC’s, only two types of files to download: a QVGA and a VGA version; this also means you can safely use, for example, the Acer N30 (QVGA) version for all QVGA and the Acer N311 (VGA) version for all VGA devices, even for non-listed ones. For MS Smartphones, you’ll need to look up the closest relative of your model if you can’t find it in the list) by using the drop-down lists on the left.
Their latest title, Dominoes, still doesn’t have a page on its own and, therefore, must be downloaded from ClickGamer.
What's new?
First of all, the major problems have been fixed and, now, unlike with the earlier versions, I can already recommend these games particularly for VGA users and / or multiplayer fans.
As of the current versions (Backgammon: 1.39; Chess: 1.43; Dominoes: 1.12; Mahjong: 1.30; Texas Hold’em Poker: 4.24; Sudoku II: 1.13),
The good
The CPU usage of all the six titles was between 40 and 80% on all my test devices (in no case lower than 40%; ~70% when waiting for SIP input from the user (for example, entering a name)). This also means ALL the games are perfectly playable on all current Pocket PC’s, as opposed to earlier versions.
I haven’t had compatibility or, as far as the CPU usage is concerned, major playability problems on any of my WM2003+ devices (I’ve tested them all: iPAAQ 2210, WM5-upgraded hx4700 (2.01), Pocket Loox 720, HTC Universal, Wizard (AKU3), x51v (A12)) with any of the current versions.
The bad
While the CPU usage (of ALL current versions!) is definitely better than that of the initial versions, it’s still a bit high, particularly when you take into account the much lower CPU usage of some other games (and the lack of music). The RealDice folks may really want to look into further reducing the CPU usage of the title (by, for example, relying on operating system-level touchscreen / keyboard event listeners)
The game still uses its own on-screen keyboard for input. This solution is not only sub-par because of the high CPU usage and the lack of visible keypress feedback, but also because you can’t quick-edit the contents of the text input fields (for example, quickly position the cursor). Fortunately, you can enter information using a remote controller application (see the roundup here) if you are completely fed up with the shortcomings of the keyboard.
All these titles consist of one big executable file (and a small DLL file). This, unfortunately, also means a slightly longer loading time, particularly when installed onto a storage card / flash ROM (including the built-in storage on WM5 devices).
On VGA devices, the landscape mode (only right-hand landscape mode is possible, which is bad news for slide-out keyboard users) is buggy: the screen events are registered at wrong coordinates.
There is still no in-game music in any of the titles.
Both good and bad
The games are all central server-based. This has, as has also been explained in the Multiplayer Bible both advantages and disadvantages. Now that RealDice has also set up a (as with many similar services – for example, EverQuest on the desktop PC or Sphere on the 2700G-enabled Pocket PC, non-free; it costs $8 a month) online gaming community, you gain access to a lot of additional goodies such a community / central server offers; for example, advanced chat and messaging features, buddy lists and global rankings / ladder. See THIS for more info. (Note that you don’t need to subscribe to RealDice world to play standard multiplayer games! You'll only need it for advanced functionality.) Unfortunately, the lack of direct, internet / server-less multiplayer connection models is still a nuisance. Nevertheless, some games offer hotseat multiplayer capabilities (which is still much inferior to real local inter-PDA multiplayer gaming).
Verdict
I didn’t recommend the earlier versions of RealDice’s games. Now that the CPU usage has been fixed, this is no longer the case: make sure you check them out if you’re into the genre (table / poker games).

Games & emulator news (07/25/2007)

This is the latest part of my Games News series; you can find the previous part HERE. The news in this part applies to both the Pocket PC (Windows Mobile 6 Pro / Classic) and MS Smartphone (Windows Mobile 6 Standard) devices - that is, no matter what Windows Mobile device you have, you WILL want to read on.
Arcade Park 1.3 out – now, with redefinable fire button!
Arcade Park is, in my opinion, a really good collection of reimplementation of old arcade games reviewed HERE (you may also want to check out the two other reviews linked at the end) containing several old subgames. It’s available for example HERE for all mobile platforms, including both the MS Smartphone (both 176*220 and QVGA) and Pocket PC (it’s even compatible with 240*240 square-screen devices; unfortunately, it doesn’t make use of high resolution on VGA ones).

The biggest problem with the game, so far, have been the inability to redefine keys; most importantly, the Action button. Now, oin the new version, you can do it in the new Controls menu. Example 176*220 SP screenshots: 1 2 (on a QVGA PPC / SP)
(Incidentally, as can also be seen in the in-game screenshots, you no longer need to defend the Soviet flag, which may be good news for several players, particularly in post-Soviet countries. Another plus for the developers.)
(Guys, I’m really sorry you’ve just missed the deadline date for the Awards 2007 with this upgraded version. Should you have published the new version some days earlier, I would definitely have nominated it for this year’s awards. No problem – I’ll do it next year.)
Verdict
Now that the button redefinition problem is fixed, highly recommended, particularly if you have a Smartphone (given the lack of good MS Smartphone games).
SmartGear 0.28 out!
SmartGear is one of the best gaming console emulatrors I’ve featured in my past emulator news / roundups.
So far, one of the biggest problems with the emulator was the sound problems (in addition to its incompatibility with some games – for example, enhanced NES titles; the PC Engine version of Turrican – unfortunately, this hasn’t been enhanced. The only change is that for example Turrican no longer starts (with all 0.2x versions, as opposed to 0.12)). Now, according to the developer, this is supposed to be fixed.
Note that there are still some problems with the sound: for example, the PC Engine (TG-16) version of Bonk's Adventure still plays the same FM-like sounds during the game as earier versions. Also, very few Genesis (Mega Drive) games have music (for example, Xenon 2 (Xenon 2 Megablast (E) [c][!]) and Risky Woods (Risky Woods (UE) [!]) don’t have, the former not even sounds; one of the very few games that do have music is Alien 3 (JUE) [!]. Also, the FitWin* mode still crashes on my VGA devices and FitWin is unberabaly slow – you will still need to use either the 100% or the 150% mode, which means stamp-sized screens on VGA devices. On the other hand, on 176*220 Smartphones (for example, on my HTC Oxygen / s310), where it’s REALLY needed with most desktop games (otherwise, they’d be too big even in 75% mode) FitWin works just great and doesn’t result in any really bad speed decrease (tested this with the GG version of Sonic and the PC Engine version of Bonk's Adventure; they both worked just great with the default sound / frame skipping / throttling settings on my Oxygen).
The desktop Windows version of the emulator, after closing it once (because I couldn’t continue a paused game), kept crashing after restarts.
All in all, while this title is REALLY good (particularly on slower devices – for example, non-overclocked TI OMAP ones, including, screen size-wise, both types of Smartphones), the FitWin performance may need to be addressed on VGA Pocket PC’s as soon as possible, along with the Genesis (Mega Drive) music issues.

Windows Mobile News as of 11/02/2007

As you may have noticed, I’ve started working on the Multimedia Bible, the premier resource of all info on multimedia playback, streaming etc. I don’t know when I get it ready. I’ll announce when the first chart versions are ready for public scrutiny.
After some 13-14 months of the 2.x -> 3.x series jump, the excellent S-K folks have just announced they will release a brand new, 4.0 version of SKTools, the, IMHO, best (albeit a bit overwhelming and, because of its capabilities and complexity, hard-to-discover) all-in-one systems management tool available for Windows Mobile. The new version will have the following new features:
- Cab Manager: SKTools can show all CAB,CPF,TSK files on device, show content (with full names, installation path, registry keys, shortcuts, _setup.xml), extract with full names, install to ANY location (full installation made by SKTools) for WM5/ WM6; SKTools can be associated with CAB files
- Replaced ROM Files: show which ROM files have been replaced by another version, show version and date of these files; the user can see if the "newest" file (the file having the latest time stamp) is, in reality, older than others and, therefore, remove it.
- Move Data: move application, folders, files to any location with automatic (!) registry and shortcut modification (and other data about files and their path)
- Storage Analyzer: show what files and folders (by types, attributes, ...) are stored on the device
The open beta starts next week (I already have a pre-beta); I’ll let you know when it becomes ready.
I’ve reported on LogMeIn Rescue Mobile more than two months ago. Now, a similar product, LogMeIn Hamachi has also been released, which – as opposed to ALL the other, similar tools – even the otherwise BEST Pocket Controller by SOTI – uses HTTP(S) tunneling for remotely controlling your Windows Mobile handheld from a remote desktop PC. This means any Windows Mobile device can be accessed, even ones behind firewalls and/or in NAT’ed networks (like about 60-70% of current mobile networks). Spb has just released an updated version of their flagship, brand new product, Spb Pocket Plus 4.0, of which I’ve reviewed some modules HERE and HERE.
The dialup-sharing-over-Wi-Fi (which is of extreme importance with non-BT DUN and/or non-BT PAN-capable devices like, for example, Symbian smartphones (neither of them) or other Windows Mobile PDA’s based on the MS BT stack (no PAN support)) method (see THIS) has been GREATLY enhanced and automatized. Moving to dialup and DUN: XDA-Dev forum member Technology has come up with a decent tool for making it work on the T-Mobile Dash.
CrazySoft released another puzzle adventure game
Their last “adventure”, “Lost in the Pyramid”, was a complete disaster. The new game is certainly MUCH better, albeit I’ve found some of the steps similarly illogical and/or plain stupid (for example, dying right away if you smash a tile; getting caught by the guards if you, for example, exit your prison through the window etc.). It’s still a far cry away from “real” (even emulated – see my emulation-related roundups and Bibles HERE) adventures like those of Legend Entertainment or Fade Team (Fade / Acedior), but you may want to give it a try nonetheless. Be warned: the trial can be played through in 10-15 minutes and I’m not really sure whether the full game is really worth the money. I’ll wait for either Eric’s or Ben’s reviews; I definitely won’t request a review copy (because I don’t really like biting the feeding hand, which, I think, may happen this time too.)
Therefore, just some remarks: The game is multiplatform and supports both VGA and QVGA on the Pocket PC. I’ve tested it on both VGA and QVGA Pocket PC’s, QVGA Smartphones and the Symbian S60v3 Nokia N95. With the latter two platforms, it’s pretty hard to control because of the lack of the touchscreen (and a sophisticated control system). At least you can use the 3…0 buttons to quickly access the inventory items.
UPDATE (11/03/2007): Oops, I’ve forgotten to tell you the name of CrazySoft game (see the last bullet above): Final Battle. It’s available HERE. You can already read a review of it for example HERE. Note that it’s a Symbian-related review. As Symbian has even less games (not taking Java MIDlets into account, where it’s much-much stronger, let alone the forthcoming N-Gage Platform, which, as of now, is slated for a December release) than Windows Mobile, the review is pretty much positive. I’m not absolutely sure it’d stand so well against the Windows Mobile competition, particularly if you take into account the platform’s (compared to Symbian, much better) ability to emulate platforms with tons of high-quality adventure games (for example, MS-DOS) and having native adventure engines like ScummVM (ok, Symbian (including even S60v3) also has it) and other interpreters like those of Magnetic Scrolls.

End of demo (again, the demo of the game is VERY short: I've managed to reach it in about 4-5 minutes after starting to play!)
Finally, as with their previous title “Lost in the Pyramid”, this game is also suffering from the same problem: it takes the operating system a lot of time to find the icon of the game. The CrazySoft folks should fix this issue as soon as possible.
UPDATE (later on 11/03/2007): Because of the insignificance of the release, I don’t devote a separate post/threads to the next game. Exosyphen Studios has released Hacker Evolution for the Pocket PC (no Smartphone version is available), following the May release of the desktop original.

Unfortunately, I’ve found the game almost exactly the same as their much older, but VERY similar title, BS Hacker Mobile Console, reviewed HERE. If you don’t believe they’re almost exactly the same game (except for the different colors and the slightly more on-screen buttons) just compare, in addition to the GUI, the built-in help to that of BS Hacker Mobile Console. See? It's, gaming-wise, is exactly the same as the older title. In addition, it is, as with BS Hacker Mobile Console, a much-much worse, much less interesting version of the original desktop Windows version - this is how a desktop conversion should NOT be done.
All in all, I in no way recommend this game, particularly not if you’ve already purchased the very similar BS Hacker Mobile Console.

Several (of course, not all) bullets also applies to the MS Smartphone platform (serach for the word Smartphone); this is why I've also cross-posted this news item to the SP General forum.
UPDATE (11/13/2007): in THIS German-language PocketPlayers.info review (published after mine), Hacker Evolution is also trashed. (Let me know if you need help in translation - I assume everybody either knows German or at least knows Babelfish / Google Translator.) This shows I was 100% right about NOT recommending the game at all.
Note that the thread also states exosyphen Studios is planning to release a FULL WM port of their desktop games. This is certainly VERY good news.
