How to avoid bricking AT&T Tilt? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Windows Mobile ROM De

I just saw this comment in another thread:

I'll be trying a lot of different ROMs.. Does anyone have advice about how to reduce the risks of bricking?
And what causes bricking anyways? Can a ROM tested by other Tilt users work fine on their phone, but brick mine?
Is there any way to fix a bricked Tilt, short of sending it to AT&T? I'm not AT&T customer, so I feel they might not be willing to fix it.
Thank you!

I too would like to know as I'm just getting into this on the Tilt...though I've modded other devices like PSP, Gamecube, Xbox so I'm not completely foreign to it.

First rule of Flashing your device: Read all sticky posts in the Upgrading secion. This would have lead you to HardSPL which is like kevlar for bricking Kaiser.

I did read the HardSPL thread! But I didn't know that's enough to save the Tilt from most bricking casualties
So assuming we carefully follow all the sticky instructions, the chance of bricking is really small? Any other precautions you recommend?
Thank you!

Kaiser is A-Ok
I have not had any issues with my Kaiser in regards to flashing.
While I have not been through the flashing process as many times as senior members on this site, so far I've tried 5 different roms and have had 100% success.
Like kyphur said, read all of the instructions carefully before flashing.

stickies, wiki's, search, and maybe at least a month of reading all of this if your not a little tech savi, just to give yourself a chance too soak everything in, and to have a good understanding what these hacking tools and custom roms has too offer you!

Att Noob Questions

Ok so I read through some threads and you guys are all a million steps ahead of me..I would like a simple guide on how to put custom roms/modifing the phone..where to get apps for the phone..etc..remember im still learning here lol
by the way im using the Att Tilt on the rogers network..if that means anything lol
just do some reading... there is more literature in these forums than you would probably care to read. Use the search feature to find items related to what you are looking for. Additionally, read the Wiki for Kaiser. It will basically answer most of the questions you'll have.
noob questions
I agree with you. i have read lot of this and i am still lost.
I also would like to know if you can connect a tilt through your pc to the internet using a wireless broad band connection over bluetooth.
thanks a lot i shall take a look at the wiki

All you need is in this Wiki, and specificaly you need to look under "Hacks and Tweaks"
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser
By all means read the Wiki. Read the Sticky post at the top of the posts listing.
But, I would not recommend anyone that is still at the stage of getting to know the phone and learning how to install programmes, to be thinking about flashing a new ROM.
I suggest you spend sometime in the regular Kaiser Forum, getting to know what the Kaiser can do/not do and absorbing information. Flashing can go seriously wrong if you do not have a clear view of what to do and in what sequence. The single sticky post in this forum would be your starting point when you have built confidence.(in particular the link to the ROM Flashing FAQ for Noobies.)
Mike
I agree with Mike....get to know the phone and then start small....ie.programs...new theme...etc......then try some of the bigger stuff.

Agreed with Mike, and (although I'm not on as much anymore) PLEASE READ THE TILT SPECIFIC WIKI!!!
It took a while to compile and was made specifically for new user such as yourself. Cheers.

Could someone please check my wm 6.1 upgrading procedure is correct

Could someone have a look over what im planning to do and if im planning anything wrong let me know, thanks a lot. I upgraded my last orange tytn2 to the official HTC wm v6.1 a couple of weeks ago and encountered the dreaded screen lag problem. It was so bad and made by phone so unusable i gave up and called in orange care to bail me out.. broken screen, honest.
I have got a replacement now and still want wm6.1, i quite like some of the newer features, especially the threaded txt features. I have read all the forums and downloaded all the software (and have i noticed a fix for the wm6.1 lag problem that caused me so much grief two weeks ago).
This is what i plan to do....
1 Backup all docs and personal data.
2.copy the JumpSPL1.56-KAIS.exe to my device and run it (my last tytn had the white screen prob, this one will prob be the same)
3.unplug and replug the usb cable
4.flash with the HTC SPL 3.28
(or should i use this...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=396922)
5.run RUU_Kaiser_HTC_WWE_3.28.405.0_radio_sign_25.83.40.02_1.65.16.25_Ship to upgrade the rom
6.reflash with HTC SPL 3.28 then reeboot
will the above process be ok and more importantly will it avoid the screen lag problems.

use that one, make sure you have done the procedure correctly. After that you have hard spl, and you can begin flashing any of the wonderful Kaiser roms that are available in this thread.
Now for my soapbox:
This information regarding proper flashing procedures is readily accessible in multiple locations including the wiki, and the stickied thread at the top of this forum. Please take the time to try to learn some of this by reading, and if you have questions about any particular part, please please please post in that thread instead of creating a new one. This place is getting messy in here (though that's partly due to all the wonderful chefs whipping out the new roms constantly...we appreciate your work guys!)

thats what are new hardspls are for: to get rid of screen freezes in wm6.1. Please read wiki and all important and relevant info before flashing. The track you have chosen is pretty much accurate, but posting a thread like this will get you scolded by the mods...
Thanks for your replies guys, and sorry to the mods if this posting has caused any problems in this forum.

I just received my Kaiser a yesterday coming from being a long long time Wizard user. Before I even received it I began reading everything I could to be ready to flash.. If there is one thing i could comment on though is that it appears that in the past month or so the Kaiser Rom flashing process has been changing a bit. I mean a new official 6.1 was released, diamond roms are coming out, and over coming various radio problems.
That being said, the wiki probably needs to be examined and updated as much as possible in these changing times. Once I get kaiser ground underneath me, I will be more then glad to contribute, as that is what this site is about, developers helping other developers. For instance, the page about ROM Upgrading basically just says flash pofs hard spl 1.0. Yes the new jockyws hard spl just came out, but still...
I don't know.... Just throwing it out there..
Coming from a wizard, the kaiser it a entirely different beast.. I am glad i have put in the time to do some reading, and its good to see some over the old wizard cooks here, and excited to to test out some new stuff.

Is haykuro helping bricks?

Possibly, but no offense, I wouldn't count on it. Modding your phone is a risk you signed up for.
A couple of threads down he was gathering info on what versions were bricking and he said on here and Twitter that he has someone helping him figure it out.
If you are looking for the answer tonite, then you probably aren't going to get one...I am just assuming. If it is possible to fix the bricks, it might take some time.
You posted this same question in three threads.
Someone else is working on a hardware solution for un-bricking (JTAG cable). Honestly though, your best bet would be getting a replacement from where you bought it.
It is obvious from your post that you didn't actually read or do any research prior to attempting to install the newest SPL.
If you would read the all of the different threads... Might be a good idea to read the ones about bricked phones. You would find out that there is a group of persons working on fixing that issue with the new SPL. Additionally, you might find out that this was an issue that could not have been predicted as it is only an issue with certain phones (a vast minority) that have certain hardware that is slightly different from the others.
Haykuro in one of his posts stated that he will also be working on the issue when he gets time. However, he is a 17 year old in high school, most likely has finals approaching, and is also working on the hero build...
Although, I have a phone that most likely won't have any issues with the new SPL it is my only/primary phone. So, I won't risk it until I can read the threads and know that there is a fix for the issue.
If you attempted to install the new SPL without reading all of the possible issues/related threads... Shame on you.
But, don't imply that Haykuro is to blame or responsible for fixing for something he had no way to predict and for something you didn't research.

Co-sign. Already reported.
The other posts were entered as I was typing! Also, Haykuro has since made a post requesting data on the bricked phones.
Please read the first post on that thread!
It isn't to ask questions. That thread is only to post the data/specs on your device prior to it being bricked so that the powers that be can figure out how to fix it so no one bricks their phone in the future.
I don't think its anyones responsibility to fix your phone, while it does suck and I'd be mad if I have a brick, you need to understand that your the one that put your phone on the line, so not having it work is a chance that we all take

New Here: I need help

So I've tried reading through some of the introduction threads, but there's so many jargon terms thrown out casually that I have no idea what half the posts are talking about.
I just "exchanged" my old AT&T Tilt for the AT&T Fuze, and I'm loving it. However, I want to update my ROM to windows mobile 6.5, and get into customizing it a bit. I know the first part is the hardest, because you run the risk of bricking the phone.
Since I have no experience doing this, could someone help walk me through the process?
I know I most likely want a 'cooked' ROM, and I've read the tutorial a few times, I'm just not sure I'm understanding it correctly due to some of the terminology. I'm also not entirely sure what ROM I want yet, and was hoping someone might be able to point me towards one that fits my needs.
Again, sorry if I'm asking when I just just be leaping. Will someone please hold my hand and give me some chocolate milk and talk me through changing the ROM? >.<

Thanx for your reply, it proves you didn't read my post at all.
well if you had clicked his link you would realize that post is exactly what you were asking for.
also. No one can pick out a ROM for you. Browse through them and test a few out. it only takes a few moments to flash a new ROM to your phone.
What terminology are you having trouble with? if you search for it in the wiki or in the post that was linked above then you will undoubtedly find an explanation.
A good site for general overview, if you can handle the writing style, is blown fuze. I gained a lot of info reading this, even though I don't have a Fuze yet (but would like to get one).

take the time to click the link and it will provide you all the instructions needed. Everything is explained in full detail even providing the program you need to flash a new rom, so you should really really click before you complain.
trust me, that link on flashing your first gsm rom is as complete as you get, unless you want big pretty pictures or a video.

Thank you for actually reading my post, I greatly appreciate it.
To everyone else, I DID click the link, and read it several times before even posting. If you had bothered to read my post, you would have noticed I referenced it several times. I took the time to read before posting, you could at least have the civil decency to do the same.
@ Theoneeye, thank you for the assurance, I tracked down someone who was able to answer some ROM questions for me and help me find a good starting ROM and assist me with the process to make sure I don't brick my phone on my first go at it.
Normally I just try things like this, and if it fails, try again until it works. However, since I read up on this first (even though everyone here seems to think I didn't) I know I run the risk of bricking my phone. Since I've gone through several exchanges already to get this phone for free (long story) I don't wanna be swapping another phone so soon.
To those who still bother to read posts, any input you can provide on your ROM choices, or the other half of my post regarding some things I should look into installing, I would appreciate it.
To anyone else who's going to continue to refer me to that sticky instead of reading, please **** off.
wow. I'm surprised. If you actually read through the link several times and you still did not get it, you were skimming it or you really really do not have a strong grasp on the english language.
Hell, it's even numbered. How much easier would you prefer. If you want suggestions for ROM choices, it is entirely up to you. Every rom has their own unique "style" that they offer and they describe it all in the first post. Energy, NATF, etc all explain their roms in great details and some even provide extra steps.
My blunt suggestion here is that before you tell others to **** off for referring you to where everyone else has use as reference and successfully performed a flash, you should save your rudeness for yourself. Also, if you have any questions on terminology, ask which jargon is throwing you a wrench in your direction following process. That would make it much easier to explain.
P.S: seriously read through that damn sticky, it is as clear as a swarovski crystal. Follow it step by step and don't "do your thing" and you'll have a successful flash.
btw. way to be a jackass to those who have already given you the answers you asked for.
EDIT: TLDR version. Be polite, and follow the directions to the letter. and ROMs are your personal choice since they're all unique and they come in full explanations as to their purpose.

I see your arrogance is getting you far
Just getting into this meself and so far it looks like...
- sort out the hardSPL update first to let you do the ROM and other upgrades...
- once it says 1.90.OliNex on the bootloader fetch the new ROM
- reading around and going by most references the Energy 6.5 ROM seems to be worth a shot, think that's what I'll be installing on my TP
- while you're at it search for aerial upgrades and put a newer version on at the same time to sort out GPS and phone performance.
Just make sure you follow the instructions to the letter, don't run anything else on the PC while updates are being done and check, check and triple check the ROMS to make sure they're correct before doing anything

It's helpful knowing there's some decent people on these forums who are willing to help out. I was able to get the few basic questions I had regarding installation and some pointers to help me find a ROM that fits my needs. Since then I've done a few flashes and all have gone off without a hitch.
To those of you who continue to think I'm being rude, you seem to fail to realize the ignorance and blatant 'ass hattery' in repeatedly referring someone to read something they already read without providing any additional information. It comes across as very condescending, and isn't helpful at all.
Speaking of "It comes across as very condescending, and isn't helpful at all."
If you want help here this is NOT the way to get it.
This is a community of great minds and mutual respect, not somewhere for someone to start making demands and throwing out general negativity.
No one here thinks you continue to be rude, THEY CAN READ IT FOR THEMSELVES.
Everyone here is willing to help, but you need to help yourself first. You're off to a really great start....

Sorry Dracius, i'm with the majority of people here who think you're rude and havent understood the idea of this site - its a community developement site, not a one-stop download & personal tech support center.
The instructions in the flashing guide are exactly what you need to start you off in the world of flashing roms. It has a "before you start" backup part - with a link to free backup software.
It then goes on to explain exactly and in detail how to flash (GSM) hard spl - including a link and instructions to ensure you have a GSM phone. It also tells you to ensure you dont have any other programs running / screen saver etc which might throw a spanner in the works.
Following that, it says - if you want to - how to sim & security unlock the phone, including the required link.
Next it details how to flash a rom, including a very helpful line
1. Download your prefered Rom from the Raphael Rom Develpoment Page and unzip/unrar it to your computer
Click to collapse
Your prefered rom - remember this is a guide on how to flash - not what to flash. To decide that, read the details in the rom forum, read other users feedback - and then when it doesnt help, do what everyone else does and try half a dozen to see what it is you want your phone to be like.
Finally, the guide tells you how to flash a different radio - and again says this is optional. It then links to a radio thread which explains what the radio does and why you might want to flash it.
If you have a problem with any part of the process (or pretty much anything related to your phone) then (after searching & reading) make a post explaining what your problem is - and what you have done to help yourself (say exactly which threads you have read, and why they dont help you / what you dont understand) - people will generally help.
This isnt what you did.

>>>>READ THIS BEFORE FLASHING OR ROOTING<<<<

There are threads popping up everywhere of users who have bricked there devices..here in the past few days. It has gotten ridiculous. anyone who has been in multiple forums on xda can tell you the same thing i am...I have never seen so many bricks on a device.
Is it the device a problem maybe with the skyrocket???? NO
99.9999 percent of the time bricks are caused by user error. Like it or not its true.
On the very rare occasion .. it is an actual rom/kernel problem......its rare because roms are rigorously tested by the developer before posting to the masses...
So Please if your just getting into roting and flashing or not familiar with Samsung phones.......
read the roms thread. see if people are having issues or if u can find posts by others who are running the rom/kernel combo. that your are about to flash.
understand fully without doubts the process. of rooting...custom recoveries. and any kind of flashing. weather it be kernel/rom/modem/themes/mods.......
BECOME FAMILIAR WITH ODIN HAVE IT AVAILABLE AND KNOW HOW USE IT...
HAVE THE STOCK TAR AND STOCK RECOVERY TAR HANDY
under stand what a nandroid backup is and how to backup, and restore them.
NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER FLASH A ROM NOT IN THE SKYROCKET DEVELOPMENT SECTION ON YOUR SKYROCKET.
( unless u know the deal with the t989 ) and understand that process fully
READ READ READ READ....THERE ARE guides on everything you could ever want to do to a skyrocket...in the general section......read them ..spare yourself the trouble of destroying a very nice expensive phone.........
people asking am i bricked would know if they were if they had read any of the imperative, readily available information.
to sum up read always read everything u can. before tampering with your phone....
you will very rarely see a seasoned member posting am i bricked or help what did i do threads..............This is because they read, and obtained the proper knowledge. before proceeding.....
now heres the goodies that need to be read......ATLEAST the most important ones, that will solve most issues...
[THE PURPOSE OF THIS THREAD IS TO HELP EVERYONE OUT....BECAUSE WE ALL HATE TO SEE PEOPLE BRICK THERE DEVICES.......
but if u choose to ignore the above information,,,,,then that is on u and u will brick u may get away with a few flashes and softbricks.....but its just a matter of time

Good post.
Also, people who have bricked and make a new thread. We want to help you, but please for the love of god give as much information as possible. The incidents of these 'ghost bricks' where people have said they have done everything correctly is rising, yet the accompanying details are lacking. It is scary thought that our phone can brick itself on a normal flash .001% of the time, but we don't even know if this is true because of a lack of information.
I think this is a nice post in light of the present circumstances that different users (n00bs, if you will) are facing. I have been a big fan of reading multiple times before trying on something and probably that is one thing that have saved me from getting my phone useless. And with such informative guides by developers like Silver we should always read everything for sure...
Thanks a ton Silver for all that you do and I will be trying your Silver ROM as soon as I am done posting this
Thanks for posting this Silver. I don't mind helping people who've run into trouble--I actually like it since I've run into the same problems myself (including a hard brick--my own user error, admittedly...).
If any of the people starting new threads took a minute to search, they would find that their question has been answered a hundred times. But I'll generally cut them some slack and just try to help since when you think you've bricked your phone you tend to be in a total state of panic and don't think to search first.
Thanks for the post. Coming from a Captivate over to a Skyrocket wasn't too bad of a transition, but my Captivate would have been bricked most definitely unless I read 2 or 3 DIFFERENT guides and watched a couple vids on YouTube. Please read and reread and then read some more
i just got into US 4 2 weeks,
and had my skyrocket at the 2nd day in US,
i just rooted it few days ago,
it's easy for me to root it ,
just follow the rules,
don't make any mistakes.

Ordered a new (refurb) skyrocket and am going to root
Hi all.
Very green noob here.
I just ordered my skyrocket from AT&T. They have refurbished going for $19.99 for those looking. I'm coming off from a Samsung Impression. "It's ancient, it's ugly..." for those loving Nightmare before Christmas.....
Anyhow, when I get it I am going to play with it for a day or so and then root it(or attempt to), and put the Cyanogen mod and clockwork mod. Hope I know what I'm talking about.
I've been reading everything for weeks now and am going to re-read again all of the links mentioned by Silver03wrx at the top. Thanks in advance.
Two questions, though.
I want Ice Cream Sandwich on it.
1. Any recommendations which to do first, ie upgrade to ICS and then Root?

2. I am going to back up the stock set up first. If I screw up and brick it, can it be restored? I have read that a soft brick can, but I do not recall ever seeing mention of restoring from hard bricking. Maybe I missed it.
Any proactive help is much appreciated.
Thanks
I would do the ICS install and then root
As for bringing... We've lost a lot of good men out there to hard bricks, which is one of the reasons you got a Skyrocket for 20 bucks lol
Soft bricking happens all the time, not too hard to recover from. Hard bricks are very difficult. There's a dude out there who repairs a hard brick $50 or in that range
Just follow instructions and you'll be fine
Non-bricked Skyrocket since 2-11-2012
Thanks for the guidance Shootoo.
Thanks
Thanks for the tip! Big help!
Def READ UP ON ODIN
I made the mistake of thinking Odin was like superoneclick, it either works or doesn't, IT IS NOT. You can seriously mess up your device if your not careful. I would know, Cause I bricked the Epic 4G Touch, Luckily by the time I got to the skyrocket, I had personal Experience. LOL
Thanks for the info.
Just wanted to say thanks for this thread. I'm experimenting with rooting my girlfriend's Skyrocket and if I can avoid bricking her phone, well that would be great
Thanks for the great post
Hi, I've been hanging around XDA for a few years now, and this is one of the most complete posts for rooting a device I have seen. I have a Galaxy S Fascinate with VzW, and had a big learning curve on it.
I recently finished rooting/modding it to run CM9 ICS 4.0.4 and am looking to take advantage of the dual core processor for better performance than my 1st Gen Fascinate.
Thanks for all the great work!

Very important to read and read and read again...
I've bricked my phone but I knew that this could happen before attempting it and had read enough prior to trying out a rom. I had a backup plan just in case from all the great posts here.
When my SR bricked, I didn't panick... much. . I just spent another few minutes with the leaked ICS and everything was working again.
Bricked... No wait...
I thought I bricked my phone. Started checking everything and after discovering the one of my USB ports won't support my phone correctly, I was able to restore my phone with ODIN.
One thing I did notice once I recovered is that when using that port, ADB would error and time out. I though it was a driver, then cable issue, but it was the port.
In the future to test my phone and make sure it is fully accessible, I'm going to run ADB and drop into shell mode to make sure my cable and port are working.
OP: Can you please add following instruction in bold red
Check your device before flashing. FLASH AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727 ROMS ONLY
I have read 2-3 threads with folks bricking their SGS2 skyrocket by flashing other roms.

What the op should add is the fact that leaked ICS kernel's can hard brick a phone. A shame considering almost every rom released in the last few months is based on the leak. You can read more about it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1644364

Actually most are safe because we use GB recoveries. I think only CM9 based ROM using non GB recoveries are at risk.

Read up and Fear Not: The true bueaty of Android!
I am realatively new to Android, especially when it comes to development and customization, but I have much experience with hardward tinkering and hacking over the years. That said, since I got my SkyRocket I am HOOKED! I have managed to flash my S2S through six or so different ROMs, starting from GB stock to Cyanogen then to the ICS. Just 2 days ago my PC glitched while flashing through ODIN and my phone turned to stone. ODIN wouldn't see it, ClockworkMod was gone, all my data/backups...EVERYTHING. I thought it was over. However, with persistence, the forums and some gumption, I was able to bring it back from the brink! As long as you take your time and keep at it, everything you need to be a pro (or at least feel like one with your own devices) is here somewhere and no device should have to suffer the boring stock life again!!! Thanks to all the devs and moderators for keeping us dabbling, Great Post Silver!
