I want to share a folder on my PPC, which i could access on my PC through WiFi, with the simple windows sharing protocol - SMB/CIFS.
i.e: i want to be able to browse my PPC with the address: \\HTCUniversal\Storage Card\Music ....
I'm wondering, how could it be that there is no app/service that will provide this???
It seems like a really basic and simple request, but yet i've found no solution to this.
I found "Mocha FTP Server", but it doesn't quite do the job, because i have to run it manually everytime i want to browse my ppc, so its not that comfortable.
If only i could run such an app as a small service - it would be perfect.
Any ideas?
There are many free SMB implementations on the net under GNU/GPL license, maybe someone could port it to a windows mobile platform?
smb is known simply as "Microsoft Windows Network".

i want to access folders on my ppc, through my pc, using Wifi.

sure it's possible but preciously few of such server services have been implemented on wm that i know off
not sure if it's because lack of demand
lack of mem and cpu juice(i mean an arm 400Mhz cant hold any kind of cantle to an old 400Mhz p4 or amd cpu)
or if it's the fact that batt power and stablity and lack of a device which make everybody else time out due to power saving settings
maybe the people who would be poking at that bear are busy making linux useable on these pdas

I just installed VirtualDisp and it's a really kick-ass piece of software. So anyone who does not know it yet, give it a try! (http://world.kyuran.be/) It lets you use your computer's mouse and keyboard to control your ppc. The amazing thing is, its "client"-side only (you don't need any additional software on your mobile device!) - just activesync your device and you are ready to go. It "extends" your desktop in the way modern graphics drivers do when multiple monitors are attached. Just move your mouse out over one edge of your monitor and your cursor will appear on your mobile device's lcd.

This post got me curios so I went and downloaded the demo version.
As I suspected, this functionality cannot be achieved without a server on the device side. They use a DLL which is a RAPI extension. They copy it silently to the device so you don't notice it. I found this out when I tried the free version on a WM5 device. It only comes with the DLL for WM 2003.
Any way, it's not that great since you can't see the PPC screen on the PC. There is a tool from Microsoft (completely free), called Remote Control (something, don't remember) and another tool from some company (not free) that shows you the PPC screen on the PC and lets you use the mouse and keyboard of the PC for input.
So this is a nice little app, but I doubt it will sell.

The thing is Register that SOTI Pocket / Smartphone Controler is a kick ass app that is far more advanced than VirtualDisp... and not much more expensive.
So it needs to have something extra to catch the atention
But its a good start

Sorry, didn't mean to heart anyone's feelings!
It is a cute app. Perhaps if they add the functionality of using it as a virtual mouse without the PC connection (using the joystick). There was a thread here somewhere of people looking for just such an app.
By the way, have you tried it on WM5? I know from experience that just transferring a DLL won't do so they would have to install a signed cab. Does it connect as smoothly as it does on WM 2003. That is one strong point I noticed: They detect the AS connection immediately, and you don't have to wait before you can use the app.

If you have trouble downloading, choose following version. I have removed AT&T signature (the client is in Java). Works on HTC Kaiser (non AT&T). You have to switch to landscape to play.

Tried it on an ETEN X800 and get the message "We cannot authenticate your player".
Also it doesn't strech to 640x480 so only part of the screen is shown.

You have to fill out their form to get yours TOKEN and OUSN (phone number). Then you can replace these parameters in JAD.

This is regarded as being the future of gaming - you carry a small client, while the game itself is hosted and rendered at the manufacturer.
The obvious side effect is that you need to pay for the service and there is practically no way around that.
You can try to setup something similar, though, by installing SL on your home PC, together with a VNC server. You need to adjust the screensize proeprly and then you access your PC through a PocketPC version of VNC...

out of all the vnc clients and servers ive tried the best for windows mobile to use for secondlife would be the remote desktop however on a lot of versions of windows it wont work unless you have a professional version of windows. and sound does work as well for it so u can hear voice but u will need a fast computer and phone for it to be an optimal experience
Remote Desktop only allows 16 bit color resolution, while Secondlife only starts if you are on 32 bit color resolution. Back then I did not find any way of getting around this, except using VNC instead.

Yes i would like to know how i can run 32-Bit for my remote desktop on my HTC HD2
From what i have read i have only seen posts that allow you to go too 24-bit on XP.
But i have not managed to get that working though. My remote desktop on my Mobile phone still only allows me to go to 16-bit which is just horrible looking and doesnt allow allot of things too work.
Maybe there is a alternative program that does allow 32-bit?
Or a way to get my windows standard remote desktop to go that high?
Hopefully you guys know a way to get this working!

You can't use Windows Remote Desktop Connection (aka RDP).
You MUST use VNC.
Install a VNC Server like UltraVNC or TightVNC on your PC and a VNC client on youer Windows Mobile phone.
Let me tell you upfront: it sucks. Too much lag, constant crashes of VNC on the mobile phone, too small a screen and the lack of keyboard makes the experience a really bad one. Much better to use Messenger straight away.

I really can't wait until stream gaming is improved, no longer would game development for mobile be entirely OS/hardware dependent.

How are you going to access the applications deployed on the web server in your phone? I dont think there is a way to get static IP for phones. This is a strange thread.
I was thinking something like bluetooth PAN, Celio Redfly or the phone itself.
But also I am thinking the wiki should be mirrored on the web so that the access to the wiki is not dependent on the 3G connexion. Seems to be doable with mysql, at least from the phone mysql db to the webserver mysql db. I guess I'd need sthg to mirror data from the webserver to the phone, maybe OpenVPN or sthg else with mysql I don't know ...

I was wondering if there was any software for either, home automation or remote desktop connection. I've searched for home automation and can't seem to find a definitive answer. As far as remote pc goes... I want to be able to see and access all the files on my laptop, from my phone.

absolutly, I am using guildFTPd(freeware) to host. However I can't use TotalCommander to see the dir/file structure, I have to use FTPview. There are other free ftp servers as well (FTPShell Server). Just make sure you use strong security, I do get occasional people/bots trying to getting in the server.
There are also applications like RemoteAdmin, PCAnywhere, VNC viewer to take control of your remote machine ... but if all you want is to access files the FTP approach is better performance wise.
is there some sort of LogMeIn hamachi client for WinMo? I know for PC's it puts two computers on the "same network". that might work, if there is...
You could also try running Orb (free) on your laptop if you want to be able to access files remotely. Allows for all media files specifically but also has a built in file browser.
Also allows for streaming video etc (can be great if you've got a TV capture card on your laptop at home and you want to watch TV from a remote location)

You can both remotely control a PC and access file shares with features built into Windows Mobile.
To control a PC
I have successfully used Remote Desktop Mobile on my Fuze (standard ROM) to control my home PC. My home PC is Windows XP Professional (XP Home does not include the RD server). It works great considering the screen size. This solution is much simpler than installing 3rd-party software on both the phone and the PC.
To access files on a PC
I have used File Explorer Menu | Go To | Open Path | New Path to access file shares. I haven't done this a lot but it seems to work fine. Configuring a share is much simpler than installing and configuing an FTP server. BTW, Windows XP Professional includes an FTP server.
To use either of these features you must have an appropriate network path from your phone to the PC. The easiest way is to use your home wireless network. Then you only need to worry about the software firewall on your PC.
If you use the provider's network, you must properly configure all firewalls to allow appropriate ports, and configure your router to port-forward appropriate ports to the PC. You must also either (1) have a static IP for your home network interface, (2) track your dynamic IP address as it changes, or (3) use a service that maps a host name to your dynamic IP and automatically tracks changes. It might be easier just to store files on a web site, then you don't need to even keep the PC turned on.

No, not possible; but you can try DFT Bluetooth file transfer if you have a fully unlocked or rooted phone and see if that works. Currently there is no way of doing what you are asking via email, MMS or Wifi.

Root Webserver (see my sig) allows easily taking files off (or putting them on) a Windows phone via WiFi. It's not the most elegant approach, but it's easy to use.
There has been talk of somebody implementing SMB (the network protocol that is used for Windows networking) using the sockets APIs in WP7, but I'm not even sure the official APIs are complete enough and even if they are, it'll be quite a bit of work to implement (the SAMBA project has been trying on Linux for years, and is only mostly there).
I'm quite certain it's possible to attach arbitrary files to email, but nobody has found the way *yet* so that's not currently possible. Also, the email client isn't going to let you save attachments to arbitrary locations, because it's designed to work with the very low permissions of the OS by default.
