Remembering the days of TyTN GPS quest, there's a new one for TyTN 2. Does it have a "hidden" FM radio. Some would just want it to listen to favorite programs, but FM receiving also means RDS, and the ability to have TMC (Traffic Messaging Channel) Navi. Now why do I think it may be possible. Well because the new, unlaunched yet, Polaris (Artemis successor) seems to "work" on same Qualcomm MSM7200 chipset, which should also support FM radio.. Hmm.. what are your thoughts..

This is one of those topics that keeps rearing its head. It has already been established on here (by people cleverer than me), that the FM radio is a feature incorporated within the bluetooth chip of the phone. The Kaisers BT chip is different to that of other phones with an FM tuner and does not have the FM capability.

It does work!!!! You just need to plug in the headphones & then splice in new wire leads for an advanced external antenna to help improve reception.
I have detailed the instructions for the advanced external antenna construction below.

Would be great if someone finds out if it is possible...
I don't believe it has FM Radio.
If it had,why do HTC keep it as a secret and not add it to the PDA's specifications??
It would be a plus on the device.

The GPS Camera function was also off... and it is in the device, a small reg tweak and I have taken about a 100 pics already and i'm able to map the location of these pics. So your reasoning is not 100% true.

I guess that as soon as Cruise (Polaris) is out, we'll have to "do something about it".... so this thread is more of a "heads up" nature.. TMC is an important Navi component, at least in the EU.

OK, maybe I'm wrong.

Ok so i had a quick look see.. and it would appear there is indeed a chance of FM being on the device. I also seem to remember that hsupa is also perhaps onboard.

HSUPA is on the Tilt but disabled in software. AT&T is rolling out HSUPA by the end of this year.
What AT&T needs to do is spend less money on commercials and billboards and expand their horrible 3G coverage in the US, they are way behind everybody else! EDGE is too damn slow they should be ashamed to even mention it, my Commodore 64C with a 1200 Baud modem back in the days was faster Never mind HSUPA if you can only enjoy it in very few locations.

LOL. I wasn't commenting on their coverage. I was commenting on the fact that HSUPA is coming to the States.
Besides, I'm in one of those areas where I DO enjoy 3G coverage, so it's of interest to me.

Interesting... I've always got at least 150K out of edge connectivity, even in rural areas. That 4 times faster than a dial up modem. I got no complaints. Though 3G is nicer.

You *OBVIOUSLY* never used a 1200 baud modem if you think it was faster than EDGE. FWIW, 1200 was the fast speed back then....try 300 (or 110 if you're REALLY an old-timer).

Yep, note that there are several RF support chips - it's not unlikely that the FM receiver resides in a different version of one of them. The Hermes GPS was actually documented as part of whichever support chip IIRC, but without the GPS antenna and bias circuitry it was pretty well useless.

Well then my humor detector is out of whack I know b!tching about EDGE is fashionable these days, but it's so much better than GPRS - which was so much better than CSD - that it's not even funny! (Pun intended.)
Sure, UMTS/HSDPA are better technologies but.....
Richard
The only reason EDGE still exists is the iPhone......
But hey I'm European, and we've had 3G for yonks.... so no biggie in fact we had 3G before edge and in many cases edge just does not exist in Europe, so it may be just fine for US use, but dont bring the phone over here and expect edge, you will just get 3G

Then what is it?
And the reason for the vaiance is that the two apps use different servers that greatly effect the actual speed, as well the app itself is going to effect the speed to an extent(ie, if one app is using up more CPU than the other, there is less CPU to download as quickly, thus you will get a lower rating).
It changes to an H when I'm running the app ^__^ and I'm in the Seattle area and TMo North America headquarters is in Bellevue (not too far away from me).
I used to not get this speed a few months ago maybe they rolled out the new stuff in my area? Not sure. I did all the tests with full bars of 3G reception and I have not applied the radio update yet. I want to see if there is any speed increase after I upgrade the radio!

I also live in the Seattle area. SpeedTest.net is definitely a way better app for android but their regular flash website is great too. There is some problem with their server list on android that seems to be T-mobile network related. My friends Verizon droid running the same app can find servers less than 10 miles away. He gets the same server results as if he were running the actual website. If you open the speedtest.net app while running on wifi it will give you the full server list. I wrote the developers and here is what they said, "This problem should be resolved with an upcoming Android release in the next couple of months." It seems they don't take the issue very seriously. More people should write in about the issue and maybe it will be fixed quicker.
It could be a very simple fix. How about saving the server list instead of loading it everytime the app is opened. Otherwise the app rules.

Same issues for me, but I think speedtest.net is a more reliable app than xtremelabs. I average about 1.3 Mbps down and up, occasionally spiking to 1.9 down and once even 2.0.

Well the Galaxy S line also has support for 720p video recording, but the Nexus S does not. So who knows. I was checking out the teardown from ifixit and it doesn't look like there are a lot of components on the board itself. I could be terribly wrong, but it looked very minimalistic and simple.

But i am wondering why all people asks things that google never advertised...
The phone doesn't record on 720p, doesn't have radio etc etc...
We all must understand that Nexus S is most of a developer phone and google sell it to show what pure gingerbread can do....
So please to search reasons to buy or not....

If you want a phone to shoot 720p video, to have radio, to have led notification, to have metallic body etc etc, this isn't your phone...
If you want a phone with quick and very good support for Google and community, a phone with pure Android gingerbread, a full unlocked and Open Source phone to play with, then this phone is the only choice you have...
Both the N1 and NS have the same chip (BCM4329) which has both FM TX & RX on the chip. I sure in time they will get the FM radio working.

I am wondering why people jump in with non-responsive posts. People ask questions because they don't know something and haven't found the answer by other means (assuming they looked). How does a response like yours help move the conversation forward.
The phone has a thousand features in it, and only a couple of dozen advertised. Should we assume that the 900+ features that aren't advertised don't exist and therefore are a reason not to buy the phone.
The Nexus One hardware supported FM radio reception, but Google did not put it in there; we had to wait for the hackers to add it. See this post.
It's certainly reasonable, in my opinion, to ask if the Nexus S, which many think is basically just a slightly modified Galaxy S (which supports FM radio) can do so, and if it's as simple as adding an apk from another Galaxy S device.
To the original poster, I don't know the answer, but if I were interested enough to do a little research, I'd google the ifixit teardown of the Nexus S, then see what radio chip it uses, and if that particular chip has FM radio capability. If it does, it's just a matter of time before some enterprising dev adds it in. Probably not as simple as installing an apk, there are most likely driver and/or kernel changes necessary to get it functioning.
edit: I see others have already looked that up. I've NEVER used FM radio on my N1 or SGS, but nice to know that it might be there someday, just in case.

Because the nexus one was said to not have radio, but after long we now have fully working f m radio on the nexus one. So why not do the same with the nexus s?
Yes. the Nexus S indeed has FM capabilities, courtesy, the BCM4329 chip inside
And do you think that with some code it will be possible to Nexus S video recording 720p as Nexus One ?

Yes, and no. There's allegedly a bandwidth bottleneck in the hardware on the NS that the GS doesn't have; so while 720p is possible, it will be at fewer frames per second if/when we get it.
for as cool as it can be to have the FM radio like the SGS... i still ponder what is the point of it?
i know i know, just for the sake of having it, and the very rare occassion you will actually use, when you use your wired headphones....
but i've owned the SGS for 4+ month, i've only used it ONCE in the entire time, and it was only to check if it was working or not, and the people complaining the FM radio sounded like MONO (which was actually a code bug, and not hardware deficiency)
in this age of MP3 and AC3 and POT CAST, Streaming Radio stations (3G/WiFi) play backs... a good old authentic FM radio (which will not work if you are not using a wired headphone) has fallen into a "novelty" category, instead of a "cool feature" category as it was in the past.
if they could make the FM radio work without the wired headphones, and be able to Stream the FM audio via bluetooth, then that will really be Enjoyable

LOL, I just disagreed with you on something else in another thread, but on this topic, we're on the same page. I've also only used my FM radio on the SGS once, and just to see if it worked.
Now, if it offered HD radio service and some of the offset digital channels, it might get more use out of me. Seriously, I'd be more likely to use a built-in radio if it were AM for news and talk radio. For music, too many better options available to us on the data-connected phone.
Still, if the hardware's there, nice to be able to use it if you wanted.

I also have my notebook which is 300Mbps with 100% Signals. I was hoping to get around 90-100Mbps. I have also try switching to different channels, and also set my router to accept only N devices. 65Mbps is the best my TF could do. I will check it out with the apps.

I'd be absolutely amazed if you get anywhere near 150Mbps. I blame the Wireless N standard rather than the TF. Wireless N is quoted up to 300Mbps which makes me laugh. If you manage to get half of this you are doing VERY well. I would be delighted with 72Mbps. It is more than fast enough to stream any type of video so what is the problem? I think you have a decent speed there.

I would NEVER trust the 300Mbps reading you get from your laptop. I bet if you were to carry out some proper tests it wouldn't even be half this. 300Mbps is living in dream world.
I have the Netgear WNDR37AV (dual band) and will do the test once I arrive at home.
There was a long thread on this on the official Motorola Xoom forum, basically concluding that the chips in modern tablets (all of them) are simply not capable of sustaining higher speeds than what's being reported here. For myself, I'm happy with the performance--certainly, it's fast enough for anything I use a tablet for.

12MB/sec is about 100Mbps, which is way less than the 300Mbps quoted by your router's max speed. Still, I would be very happy with that speed.

Are you (or anyone else for that matter) able to connect to the 5G network with your transformer?
My transformer is only able to see/connect to the 2.4 band (65mbps) and I'm wondering what router people who can connect to 5G own.

72mbps is what mine always shows, never any higher.

The issue is not your router, its the TF. It cant connect at 5g, only 2.4g

Interesting
Wireless N gets its major speed increase from using multiple channels (MIMO) and the increase in bandwidth between channels 20 Mhz or 40 Mhz
If nobody can get higher link speeds then 72 Mbps, then it seems that the transformer doesn't support multiple channels or the 40Mhz channel bandwidth
Here is a chart for reference
Does any of this matter. For smooth streaming I thought you only needed 5-6 mbps.
FWIW, the Nook Color has N and also only supports 2.4 GHz and streamed video is smooth.

Thanks for this. I was questioning it because the zoom apparently can connect to 5G from what I've read.

Xoom, NC and TF101, all of em don't support 5g, atleast 5g didn't work on my friend his xoom with 3 different routers.

Agree completely. 72Mbps is well fast enough for any type of streaming. Don't see what the issue is...

It depends on the quality, the bitrate, the filetype and of course the file size. But yeah for most people's files and the majority of stuff you get from the web 5-6 is plenty.

My Xoom connects to my 5G router. It's a netgear WNDR3700v2
So I went into settings > Wireless & networks, then hit the button on the top right (scan and advanced). When I selected advanced the first time, there was either (I forget what it said lol) an option above the mac address for 5G, 2.4G, automatic or N/G/Auto. I selected 5G/N, however I can no longer get this option since selecting one. I'm not trying to prove this thing can connect to 5G networks, though I'm wondering what that was all about and how to get the option back. Has anyone seen this? Maybe I'll do a hard reset.
I'll start why not Here's a good amount of tests for my area.

We had some past threads about this... but they aren't active recently so I'll jump on this one. Plus T-Mobile did those changes here in the States recently. I do see a slight difference in my speed since they "doubled" the speeds in many major cities. Only problem... it's now a little slower for me. Will keep testing.
Before Speed Doubling
-------------------------
6-7 Mbps average
10 Mbps max seen
After Speed Doubling
-----------------------
4-5 Mbps average
7 Mbps max seen
Lame! Maybe my old 2g SIM card is finally coming into play? I'm over my 5 Gb as is my norm so maybe I'm being throttled to HSDPA (3.5 g) lol
Yeah it's possible your Sim card is playing a role in that. May want to swap it out!
I'm in north side of Chicago, max speed seems to be around 5-6Mbps at my office, although I'm getting all bars. Will do some speedtest when I go to the Starbucks right next to the t-mobile store (I suspects they would have wifi-to-cell access point there to max out the speed)!
I'm in Queens,New York and speeds are lame where i live.I never reached 3Mbps. my average speed is around 1-2.5Mbps

Very nice, I'm a little north in Lewisville, fastest I have seen so far is 9.5 or so down and 2.5 or so up.
I average 3 - 5 down and 1-2.5 up. Ive only run a few tests at work but dont know the results off the top of my head.
does the sim card actuall impact 4g speed?

i am using the SIM card I had last year in my HD2. I will search on google, but before i do, are you saying officially that the SIM card impacts the speed of my connections? thanks.
My best is 4162kbps. The same place my vibrant gets 5800 +. The sensation is clearly slower then the old vibrant 3G in my case. On all accounts all the time.
My best download speed:6.99Mbps,Upload:4.41Mbps.

That's the best upload speeds I've seen. Pretty damn good.
I have been constantly performing tests, and have definitely been getting the attached snap shot. Location is obviously important, so thankfully I almost have blanket coverage.

May be by chance.Because my upload speed is usually around 1Mbps~3Mbps,and my download speed is usually around 2Mbps~6Mbps
In a G2x. First one is a definitive error as for the G2x has a 14.4 Mbps cap.
I got mine near Frisco / Plano. Can't wait for custom roms to apply build.prop hacks to make it faster!

Biggest issue is 5G, coming from OnePlus 8 and get speeds in my house that keep getting faster.
But Edge is struggling! Motorola Engineers are looking in to it.
Anyone else having issues?

Stupid question from Germany...does the Edge works on 5G since the beginning in the US?
In Germany we're still waiting for the patch.
Edge is my only 5G device so don't have anything to compare it to, but here in Phoenix here is what I'm getting the last few days. Ignore the really bad one, that was at my in-laws place which for whatever reason has been really bad always and I'm thankful to have anything at all. Even though these speeds are plenty for my usage, it kind of stinks to think I might have even better speeds with a different device.

I haven't activated 5G yet but it doesn't seem to improve speed much on this phone. I think I'll save the $$ until Motorola addresses it.

Today I set my edge to prefer LTE and ran speed test then right back to 5g for test. The LTE in my area is much slower, so 5g does make a difference here. 48 vs 15 download speed as shown in screenshot

I see, in this case, I guess it's relative. It must be a location thing. The speeds I'm getting are more than enough for all my uses.
Edit: I know these were all done together but this is what I get at any time of the day or night generally.

I've never come close to 100 Mbps ever with any phone in my area, I wouldn't bother worrying about 5g either at this time.
