I have to agree that he has long experience. But I still did not understand the catch why the Iphone suppose to be better then WM????
I fully agree that Iphone has shown in design of graphical control of a device MS has long way to improve. But from the technical pointview it is obvious that Iphone is fare away from current WM device capability's
However said that I think anyone of us can be happy that a competition to current WM devices came up and force such companies Like HTC to invent such devices like HTC Touch. It shows Those guys can do even better.
Call me ignorant But I still don't understand Why some would pay more then 500Euro for a device that has nice looking 10 icon shortcuts on today screen, but technically it can only do 20-30% what is a WM6 device currently able to do

Simple answer - Eye Candy - it's what sells Macs and Ipods really, isn't it?

At just under 6500 words in his first post, and with 206 comments since September 16th, perhaps it's us who should be joining him. Of course he may well be posting here - not as Stephen Fry of course - although come to think of it who would believe someone posting as Stephen Fry really was Stephen Fry anyway? ...
I agree with Bulldog though. Thanks to Stephen's sober review I now know that the so vaunted iPhone can hardly do anything that my beloved 5-year old Wallaby can't!

[Request] Remove snap to grid

Would it be possible to allow icons to be placed anywhere on the screen without having to align to the grid? That would be nice...

yea it would be nice to have the freedom to place widgets/icons anywhere. i kinda liked how you can do that with maemo

Oh sure, seeking "underground" music is a worthwhile effort. I never said that it wasn't. Neutral Milk Hotel for instance offers a very intelligent sound for never having made it into the limelight... but ICP??? C'mon, even you must agree...
And where do I find the "menstuation" app??? I have never heard the term before. Is it next to the spelling app per chance?

I definitely agree with Neutral Milk Hotel, but in regards to other music (just like various lifestyles lol) to each his own.

+1 for ICP and placing Widgets anywhere. I love all this witty thread banter. Have to watch your xda thread Rep and not lose all that "street cred"

The Samsung Behold II on T-mobile allows you to place shortcuts, etc., on the homescreen and there's no snap-to-grid. You can put them wherever... so I'm sure it can be done.

You know, it's funny. I really don't even listen to ICP anymore. Started listening to them about 13 years ago and made screennames which reflected the group/album/song. Now, I still use the names for consistency more than anything else. Just funny, the assumptions that get made.

My main point on this whole thread was to bring to light an idea that I felt would be beneficial... not start a flame war...

To make this a useful post, I do think it would be awesome to have a feature like this on out phones. I do not know if hardware wise it would be supported since it has not been done on any other android phone.

I'm mostly interested which one of the two is the most popular/practical/userfriendely, etc. Making a choice for either one does not mean a negative opinion/vote for the other one IMHO.
I'm willing to add the third option to the poll only don't know how to do/achieve that??

I don't think you can alter polls once you've made them, which makes sense really. Imagine doing a poll that says "which do you prefer" with the options "wm6.1" and "wm6.5" and you then add "iPhone" a month later lol. That would be funny actually

On second thought I do not think adding a third option (like them both) is necessary, because the mods cannnot coexist together on one device. So one has to make a choice between either Cookie or MaxManila.

Thanks John, I really do not mind whether many people will vote or not, or even comment on their choice. I also do like both mods but, just like you, I have my preference. Just curious how the odds are between these two amazing mods!

IMO the voting goes pretty well, though I would like to have/see some more arguments/comments regarding the choice one has made. I know that both mods are amazing but people must have made a choice based on arguments pro/con cause the mods cannot coexist on the same device. This poll is not meant to judge either of the mods (and also not to offend the developers of these wonderful mods), but just based on my personal curiosity why people choose either Cookie or MaxManila for their device. No hidden reasons/agenda or whatever.

I thought I would add a few supporting points as to why I prefer MaxManila.
Cookies is great, there is no denying that and ultimately, IMHO the best option would be to have them compatible with each other. If MM and Cookies could coexist I would be in a happy la la land of joy!
As it stand though, I had to make a choice. My reasoning was that, when it came down to it, Cookies really only offered me lots and lots of pages icons. I don't really need this. It was annoying on the iPhone as it was, it is also much the same as how the start menu is now, just side-by-side and a little more flexible in customisation.
MaxManila offered more than that. It offered a combination of features I would otherwise have installed individually; background for all tabs (including panoramic), increase number of quicklinks, transparent slider, customisable history and calendar bars, among other things.
The one thing that probably sold it for me was the clock options. I prefer the digital/analog side-by-side clock look to the original Sense UI. With eight layout options and many alternative clock appearances there is something for everyone.
Overall MaxManila is easy, flexible and attractive... oh, and have you seen what's to come next? See here ... I can't wait!

Franwella, thanks for your answer and arguments of choice. I also prefer MaxManila for almost the same reasons as you mention,plus the fact that it gives you the opportinuty to keep your homescreen as clean as possible. I know what is coming and it looks very promising. Awaiting the ETA.

I was quite interested to see that there is such a difference in the numbers between MM and Cookie users. I initially thought the results would be fairly balanced.
Obviously the poll is still only covering a very small group, but it makes me wonder what the reason for the imbalance is. Is it just that people aren't as familiar with MM? Are people looking for the iPhone like icon overload?

but cookie is a solid mod app, max is a mod app that u can mod even more urself, so there is no one is better then the other , but me personaly i use max

You're assuming that people have just take Co0kie's and don't know about MaxManila because of the poll results. That's a really unfair thing to say, and it sounds like you're assuming that the majority would want the one that you have.
I'm not getting into an argument about it, so I won't take this any further, but it does sound like you're trying to prove your own decision correct, rather than find out what people are actually using. That's all the poll tells us - nothing more.

Are you referring to Franwella's post or mine? If you're referring to me, then you have misunderstood me. I really do want to find out what people want/use/choose, but the difference between these two marvelous mods is unexplainable for/to me, that's all. Everybody has his/hers own freedom of choice and I do not want anybody to convince to take a certain/other choice. I really do not mind which one of the two people choose/use, I made my choice and probably you made yours. Hope this explanation helps.

OK, but nevertheless: see my last post to you.
On the other hand everyone is entitled to have its own opinion or express his/hers surprise/amazement/meaning of the huge difference between these two great mods without (having the intention to force) forcing anybody to change his/her mind. Personally I think, although I respect you and your work very much, that your reaction was a little harsh/negatively loaded (probably because you're a Cookie user and you are also the writer of CHT Editor) and I'm not pleased with the accusation of assumimg that people should choose what I want, unless you are just being sarcastic/cynical judged by the smiley you added to your post.
Because I respect you very much and do not intend to offend you, I would like to propose that we end this discussion by stating that we stand differently in this matter, but that neither of us, or if you prefer I, tries to convince people to make a certain choice.

Closing the thread because of a fallout over who has rights to which dialer graphics is extremely poor form.
I dont even use the theme but find this situation absolutely ridiculous.
Previously there was drama over someone creating a template for anastasia icons and again that thread was shut down.
This whole community on XDA is supposed to be about helping each other improve our devices.
The sort of Prima Donna attitude that is being displayed by certain people here is quite simply... pathetic.
Just to re-iterate... i dont use any component of the anastasia theme at all and never plan to do so.
I just feel that i needed to comment on these situations as it really is a very bad attitude for any designers/creators to take.
Imitation is the greatest form of flattery and everyone knows who is the original inspiration behind the anastasia concept. But to go and pull down all of your work over petty differences regarding where credit is due really does show people who you truly are.
This sort of attitude only hurts yourself in the long run as people will probably stop using any of your works entirely because at any minute there is a possibility you will throw a hissy fit and do the same thing again. I know i myself will certainly steer clear.
I do not wish to offend anyone with this post but simply wanted to make my feelings clear with situations like this.

I gotta say, I agree with you 100%. I didn't want to start this debate first, but I'm glad that you've let this out of yourself.
The XDA itself is a community which exists for helping and sharing, but some people do not understand that concept at all.
When I saw the reason for pulling the whole "project", I couldn't help myself sayin': "What the f***?" I'm surely a lot of people reacted the same way, but if you decide to open this debate, you gotta take sides in this case, considering the fact that there are two devs in this project.
I'm not going to say on which side I am on, but one thing is for certain: Canceling the whole project for the reason that we have seen is absolutely & utterly ridiculous!

I agree with the posts above. The tension around anything Anastasia is ridiculous. Clearly that's a lot of work for one person, if people are happy to help let them as long as they give you credit for it. I also find it against what XDA is about to start with but to each their mind I guess.

I'm pretty sure the argument is about using a design made by someone else. Anyway, if people want to help that's supposed to be good, he has lots of projects going on at the same time (theme, dialer, keyboard, slider, icons, etc.)

newbie about to buy viewsonic g tablet, questions, totall beginer here

so im about to do it. been wanting a tablet for some time and as nice as the xoom looks for 1/2 the price this make sense.
can a newbie root? i dont know the first thing about programming. ive searched the forums, and i see roms, and all these things i dont even know what they are. TNT programs, which sound not so newb friendly lol....and i want to know if there is a basic root that i may be able to follow. root for dummies is what im looking for.
and also, if i screw this up can i revert back to the original way this thing was?
sorta nervous to order and not use it to the fullest potential but seems like without rooting its not worth a crap.
i know probably asked 100 times, but ive searched and just cant find basic rooting 101 concepts. read the faqs - nothing so straight forward that i found.

This was the post that helped me the most. Have you rooted and installed new ROMs on Android devices before? It's not difficult, but does require that every last instruction is read. Twice. And look at posts about people "bricking" their tablets to see what they might have done wrong, or what they had to do to fix their problems. Don't worry about rooting; I've rooted a MyTouch 3g, a TMobile Vibrant and this tablet and it was the easiest by far. I'd like to say that the stock software sucks, but I can't. I purchased this tablet because I knew I would be rooting and ROMing and only had about ten minutes in the store and ten minutes at home with the original software. It wasn't horrible, but I do know that Vegan 5.1 flies and is very stable.
READ READ READ and search your face off for your problems before posting. Many people frown on oft asked questions here. I see a lot of people writing about how easy it is to search to get your answer, but I'm not a fan of the XDA search function for many reasons. So, Google is your friend. When searching Google, be sure to state your issue clearly and concisely, and in as few words as possible. Oh, but do include "XDA" in your search, or "site:forum.xda-developers.com" if you want to only search the XDA Developers forum.

(1) We don't mind newbies, although it's nice if they actually respect the hard work of the people here by pressing the shift button to capitalize where appropriate. It would also be appreciated if they don't use run-on sentences.
(2) We highly recommend against modding for people like you. Just turn it on, update what viewsonic has for you, and everything will run just fine. We recommend you play with the gtab for a while before taking the plunge.
(3) You don't need to know programming to root. This thread will give you step by step instructions on how to do the essential things of modding. These instructions are so easy even a cave man could do it.
(4) That said, again, their stock rom + update should be good enough for someone like you. I have 2 gtabs. I've modded one and kept the other one as is. Trust me, it's more than sufficient for your needs.

goodintentions - I was thanking adampdx but appreciate your input as well. I read his reply and his link provided and at first glance it seemed helpful. With that said, I also appreciate you letting me know the stock VS GT is pretty good and perhaps I will leave it as is when I get it. People make it out to be like this thing is so unsable out of the box, which apparently isnt the case. I just want to be able to get to the market and download a few apps I like using on my droid pro phone, thats all. Additionally I will use capitals and try watching the run on sentences. I was just excited to post and get involved.

I think your whole thing is condescending, including that rant you posted in the General section about the "wooters". If you wanted to be helpful you could do a write up and review about the stock ROM and make suggestions of what to do to make it better. This singling out of a group of people is rude and dangerous. You create an environment that is hostile and discourages fresh ideas. There are always kinder words to use and gentler ways to guide people.

Not to mention there be members who may not use English as a primary language and therefore may not be familiar with all of its intricacies. Respect begets respect. You get more when you offer more.

Well, here is my thought on why people are giving it such bad reviews.
(1) They compared it to the ipad right out of the box. Yes, the stock UI isn't the greatest thing, but it's usable. And after the update, it should work just fine.
(2) People were expecting an ipad when they bought this device. This is why I've been repeating over and over that this ain't no ipad.
(3) People have money coming out of their ears, so they want the bests and greatests. The slightest disadvantage and they will make it sound like the tablet exploded or something.
(4) Which brings me to my next point. People like to exaggerate.
I've always been a simple person. I like to work with what I have. I also hate Apple products with a passion. I only own one Apple product. I got my ipod (30 gig one) as a gift years ago. I've been thinking for a while to look for something that is light weight so I could drag it along for work and other activities. My laptop seems like it weighs a ton some time. That said, after I've done the appropriate moddings and installed the apps I wanted, the viewsonic gtab seems like a dream come true for me. It works incredibly fast. I didn't buy this thing to watch videos and listen to music. I have my tv and ipod for that. That said, I really think viewsonic is sitting on top of a goldmine with this device. I don't know why they haven't done more to publicize it.

Oh, please, I can tell the difference between a non-engrish speaker and someone who's just lazy. I'm a non-native english speaker. In another thread, I mentioned that I was born in a house with a dirt floor and grew up with a 4 inch black and white tv. I wasn't kidding.

Well, I apologize if what I said offended some people. But what I stated was a fact. Because of all the exaggerated reviews of how god-aweful the stock UI and screen are, average people get the wrong idea. They feel that they have to mod the device the moment they get their hands on it.
All I'm suggesting people do is give the updated stock rom a chance. Give it a few days before they decide to take the plunge. There's really no prettier way to say it.

Ah, all of this being said, I do think this whole thing is funny and a giant waste of time. I've also been noticing that the forums seem sluggish, and I'm getting strange messages from the server from time to time about not being able to load forum pages. I think all of our babble is bogging down the servers. And with the impending onslaught of wooters, we should probably knock it off.
