Tracking? - General Topics

When you lose your phone, is it possible for networks to track down and disable the phone?

Why, whose phone have you stolen?
But anyway yeah it is possible to track it down but i think they generally disable the phone by you giving them the IMEI number of it.

can i get yours? hehe just kidding..
nah i know someone who lost his phone. Thing is, do they have IMEI number on their database? cause he only knows his phone number, not the IMEI

the IMEI would be somewhere on the box of the phone
or maybe even the cellphone operator knows it
once reported stolen the cellphone operators ban the IMEI
rendering the phone useless

My phone may be black listed soon, what'next? (IMEI ID LOCK)

Hi all,
I have a SPV3000 from my work and I lost it for a while so I mentionned it to my manager who is going to state it to Orange to get it blacklisted.
The thing is, after a couple of weeks, I have just found my phone again!
I am not feeling I should mention it again to my boss as it sounds really ridiculous and he was kind enough not to argue on the loss. But well, now I have a phone fully working which IMEI code will soon be blacklisted by the 3 main operators in France running a common database on the subject (in case of phones stolen). I may send my phone to a friend abroad who will certainly be able to use it there but is there any tricky solution to be able to use it in France?
What is this IMEI code exactly and how does it work?
BE SURE I AGREE WITH THE IDEA OF BLACK LISTS TO AVOID SO COMMON AGGRESSIONS JUST FOR PHONES...
You may send me private posts in case you are reluctant to have this kind of information largely communicated.
Hi marcel06!
IMEI is kind of like a serial number which your cell company sees.
If you haven't noticed, there is a wiki link under the word for details.
There are no tricks when it comes to IMEI. There are ways of changing it, but that is illegal in most countries.
Because IMEI identifies your phone, thieves could change their phone IMEI to match yours so you would pay for calls made from other phone.
If you really want to use the phone again, you should report that it was found so they won't blacklist you.

Oh.. no. I'm not sure about those pre-SIM period phone. But I'm definately sure that now, for phones that are using SIM cards, you are not able to charge to others account using IMEI. The controlling mech is the SIM card, the billing information is in the card, not the phone. But the operator will have the power (as I've heard) to disable/track phone by IMEI.

IMEI Tracking

Just a quick one guys. I am trying to resolve some issues for my wife right now with her new Motorola CLIQ 2.
Her phone was recently stolen from a party, and she is pretty sure that she just saw one of her ex-friends using a phone with the same case and exact same dents and whatnot (she's clumsy!).
I have the box with the IMEI number, we have locked her number so that it can't be used. TMOUS is giving us hell and saying they can't do anything to lock by IMEI or anything. She is trying to get in contact with the guy she thinks has her phone but surprisingly there is no word from him.
I was wondering, don't all GSM phones have to authenticate IMEI numbers whenever they jump on/off a tower? By that logic I feel that TMOUS could track this phone to a position between the towers. Or they could at least tell me if that IMEI is in use! I'm not asking for them to tell me WHO is using it, I understand privacy, but I am just asking if it is in use at the moment.
Thanks for any help.
Matt
For TMO to even check for that the IMEI would have to be reported as stolen and there'd have to be a legal document giving authorization to do a full trace. My dad's phone got taken and I went through the exact same BS, luckilly I could trace it the same night by using my phone to find the BT signal from his and i just yelled "this would be a lot smoother if they'd just turn it in,then the cops wouldn't have to get involved because I know where the phone is",the next morning it was "mysteriously" in the mailbox but yeah, if you have the IMEI and Serial numbers you should report it to the cops and HOUND them to get it tracked, if you have that info there's no reason they shouldn't be able to find it, but most police forces are too lazy to do so and just wait for the person to stop asking. If/when you get the phone back you'll need to call the cops and tell them you have it back in your possession so they can remove the numbers from the blacklist and the phone will be operable LEGALLY again.
different nations
in italy is more different
if forget / stoled your phone
you call your operator and tell him your IMEI and operator block the phone
but the real is if the "thief" change IMEI is possible use phone with onother SIM
the police, is not tracking the phone because is a hight cost

Each phone has a unique identifier for them to be recognize by their provider. You cannot change your imei. It is also illegal in some places. If you really try and get another imei from a different phone, then two phone will share the same line.
That it's why i think you mean something else when you say imei.
Why don't you take your phone to your carrier and ask them what is needed?
Only possible reason one may want to change IMEI is to prevent from getting stuck with data plans that not everyone needs. So, if you have a dumb phone, you could change the IMEI of your Infuse to the IMEI of your dumb phone (it is quite a process) and then use it with AT&T.
Most of us have WIFI at home/work/gym/hotels; hence, it is really unnecessary to be paying $30-$40 bucks for data every month, it adds up, $350/year.
I like to have my unlimited data plan to listen to Pandora in my car and you can do just fine with $10 Medianet as opposed to smartphone data plans if you use dumb-phone IMEI.
IMEI can be changed to another IMEI, or Samsung generic IMEI (which is easier to do). Carriers in some countries (not US) block generic IMEIs.
Overall, it has uses. Legality, obviously, is a question. Some people attribute it to changing VIN on the car, which is understood. People pay a fortune for their phones and IMEI modification allows thieves to get away with our prized possessions - major downside. I think of it as changing identity string on the browser.

prevent carier from identifying my phone

I might be abit paranoid about this, but i personally don't like it to supply information to about me to my carrier when ever possible especially after the whole carrierIQ fiasco. So is thinking is there anyway to prevent carrier (tmobile) from identifying my phone?
I heard from a friend that they send the phone's imei number to the tmobile server which is how they identify my phone. Does anyone know which file on the android OS that is responsible for this?

I believe that the IMEI is used to register the phone onto the carrier's network each time you switch on. Thus they can also check if it's a blacklisted phone.

What exactly are you asking.
IMEI will always be sent to the carrier, it's the way the mobile network works. After all your carrier has to register/authenticate you onto their network, if they didn't you couldn't make calls or use data...............
If it's Carrier IQ then get a CIQ free ROM.
If it's something else please state.
EDIT: The more I think about this the more absurd the question is. The carrier will retain logs about SMSs, Voice usage, Data usage. Look and read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_switching_subsystem especially the HLR bit.
EDIT2: The Police etc. also have to have regulatory access to records, no way around that.

any file involved in making and receiving calls, sms, mms, data connection....
there is a concept, Carrier IQ that @gol_n_dal mentions that can allow carriers to access other identification from your device for problem rectification purposes. in the stock rom, htc can also collect some data about what you do as well.
if this is what concerns you, look for a custom ROM which is CIQ free.
There are app in the market to identify if your phone has carrier IQ and also to dissable it, look there to resolve this
As its carrier based (not used by Virgin UK currently after checking with them and using on of the apps on my phone) I suspect that the devs will not do anything about it, but the only way to find out is contact your favorite and ask
The IMEI is part of the radio chip and it cannot be altered or hidden, unless you have a lot of specialized knowledge and equipment. The only phone I've heard of with an easily altered IMEI is some Nokia junk phone they sell in developing markets.

Kind of a complicated question. Blacklisting and flashing ROM.

How does a phone get "blacklisted"? By blacklisted I mean that you can't make calls, text, can't get reception, it's like your carrier completely cut you off, your phone is basically useless at this point. The only thing you can use is WiFi.. It happened to me last year(?) when a "beta" or early access factory image of Marshmallow came out, I couldn't wait for the OTA update to come so I decided to flash it like a stupid person. And then I noticed that my phone was blacklisted, I had to buy a new phone.
Right now I'm thinking about flashing a ROM, and I don't want my phone to get blacklisted again. What are the chances? I do have like 4 nandroid backups. So if it does get blacklisted, I can recover the nandroid of when it was not blacklisted and it would still work right?
Blacklisting is based on the phone imei. Flashing or reflashing ROMs will not and should not change the imei so the phone will remain blacklisted until it is removed from the carrier blacklist.

I didn't really understand that part in red, I understood everything before that.. And would a nandroid backup store(?) the imei?
Let's say I lose my phone. I call my carrier, report it stolen, the carrier adds the phone imei to the blacklist so it cannot be used with any carrier in North America. Let's say someone finds the phone and returns it to me. I then call my carrier, tell them I have the phone in my possession, and my carrier will remove the phone imei from the blacklist so can now use the phone in North America.

So if my phone ever gets blacklisted again from doing stupid things like flashing stuff without knowledge, I can call my carrier and tell them to remove my phones imei from the blacklist?
Flashing a rom to a phone does not blacklist a phone because flashing does not change the imei. The phone gets blacklisted if it is reported as lost, stolen, or possibly when a subscriber does not pay his or her cell phone bill.
The phone you flashed was a phone you purchased from a carrier or retailer?

Is the imei you get by dialling *#06# the same number according to the box and back cover of the phone?
If you don't see your imei by dialing *#06# and without backup , you're ****ed
If the phone does not display the correct imei and says null or a bunch of zeros, the phone is not connecting to your carrier because the imei is wrong, not because the phone is blacklisted.

#06# doesn't do anything. It says "USSD running code..." and that's it, doesn't show anything after that. Sometimes it says "Connection problem or invalid MMI code"
Did you compare the phone imei to the national blacklist database?
Looks like the phone does not have a valid imei; therefore, it cannot be activated with any carrier and may have nothing to do with blacklisting.
Since you bought the phone from a carrier, you are the only one that can have it blacklisted through the carrier from whom you purchased the phone.

So you're saying that my phone can't get blacklisted?
For this discussion, there are two reasons a phone will be barred from connecting to a carrier network:
1) The owner calls in to the carrier and reports the phone as lost or stolen and the carrier will add the phone imei to the national blacklist; or
2) the phone has a missing or invalid imei.
Since you purchased the phone from your carrier, only you should be able to have the phone blacklisted by your carrier.

Oh okay.
So for confirmation, I can go ahead and flash a ROM without worrying of messing up the imei? And possibly some future versions of Android since I'm rooted and can't install OTA's.
I have works with several Samsung nexus, and Motorola phones and I have never had an imei become corrupted because I flashed a stock or custom rom.
Maybe you wiped something that should not have been wiped?
