Wizard - What next? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario ROM Development

I think the HTC Wizard is great and I love the ability to be able to extract and rebuild ROMs to my liking However I think it has peaked and the cracks are now beginning to show (IMO ). WM6 was only ever a test on this device and M$ & HTC have long stopped developing for it. The 'leaked' ROM (5.2.318) contained the most recent hardware drivers and have never been updated, however Windows Mobile 6 has moved on somewhat, which I feel is now leading to some compatibility issues - for me the most important are the integrated VoIP client & 'real' VPN (L2TP/IPSec and NOT PPTP). Plus the Wizard is now quite old - relatively poor camera compared to more recent PDA Phones, size - it's quite big, again compared to more recent offerings.
Unfortunately this is making me look at alternatives However I need certain key things:
1. Windows Mobile 6
2. WiFi 802.11G
3. Integrated VoIP must work and be stable
4. L2TP/IPSec VPN must work and be stable
5. Touch Screen & Pull-Out Keyboard
6. Camera 2MP or more
7. Bluetooth (for hands-free headset)
8. Slimmer/Smaller than the Wizard?
I would also really like the ability to extract and rebuild ROMs as I do with the Wizard.
Really I just want an updated Wizard that natively has WM6 and VoIP & L2TP/IPSec work....
What are the best options?
Andy

What's so great about WM6?

Hi,
While I am waiting for my MDA Pro to arrive, I have been reading a lot in the Universal section (have a BA myself).
May I ask for some valid reasons why someone would want to use homebrewed WM6 releases instead of official/customized WM5?
I do understand the fun it is to try out new things, but is it really worth it? I did not find many posts that would clear this question.
Thanks,
vma
WM6.0...
The new look and a lot faster device...
Is there any feature that won't be available with WM6, that did work fine in WM5?
Thanks,
vma
Video call isn't working yet.

The way I see it, WM6 may or may not work for you and may or may not do it for you. Try it. You can always go back to WM5. Most people don't.....
Well .... the simple answer is that I did a lot of searching and reading, and finally tried it out for myself.
I asked this very question a while ago right here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1130569&postcount=88
And came to the follwowing conclusion:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1155497&postcount=89
In the conclusion, the thing about the Bluetooth Stack / Voice Command - it was actually Voice Command that was the problem and this issue was fixed in Jrwightmcps' 2.02.00 WWE http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=297256
Crossbow ONLY!
Tell you the truth... i see the new WM6 is better eye-catching GUI not to mention the enhancement in the functionality and other usability such as email related functions. I know that MS wont just upgrade for no obvious reason nor for desktop OS compatibility.
Yet i reckon i wont -never- go back to magento! Crossbow ONLY!
@nvatvani:
Indeed your posts where the only ones I read, that contained some usefull info about the subject.
No offense to all the other members of course!
I was simply wondering about what to do when my MDA Pro arrives: replace the German firmware with a WWE WM5 one or go straight ahead to WM6 without even looking at WM5.
Also, I had some problems with my Blue Angel, when I tried WM5 on it: it may have been a coincidence, but one day after the upgrade the screen went mad and totally messed up. Only 1 Hardreset in about 100 tries would bring it back to normal for some period of time and even reflashing it with WM5 or 2003SE would not make it work normal again. The screen would get messed up suddenly for no particular reason. At the end I had to send it in for repair, which was actually a good thing, as I complained about the loose stylo and bad working hardkeys, all within warranty. I got a new key-pcb, backside and they reflashed the device with 2003SE. I posted this issue in the BA forum, but got no usefull hint. This means I am a little scared of upgrading to unofficial releases.
Other than that, I have no problems with flashing, as I do that on my other hobby (satellite receivers) frequently, including JTAG-operations for repairing bricked devices. The same applies to games consoles. (Note: I do not sell or benefit commercially from that activity and my goal is not to get illegal software or TV - not that you guy's get the wrong idea about me).
Anyway, thanks for your replies!
Cheers,
vma
What Windows Mobile 5.0 AKU 2.0 has and Windows Mobile 6 (the cooked ones, having tried them all) doesn't have, according to my experiences:
1. Videocalling - at least not a proper one
2. Bluetooth Dial Up Networking (the DUN profile)
3. Wireless Modem (yet some WM6 ROM's have it, although without shortcut in the start menu)
4. Cyberon Voice Dial by default (some WM6 ROM's have it by default, others will need a 500kB CAB to activate it)
The reason why I went back to "good old" WM5 is mainly the reliability. Ok, the OS may be a bit slower here and there, but it has all the functionality (e.g. videocalls and Bluetooth DUN), and NEVER hangs. It just always works and that's what I desperately need right now.
---
The things Windows Mobile 6 has for me that 5.0 hasn't which I miss the most:
1. High resolution browsing in the normal Internet Explorer (I don't want to use alternatives)
2. HTML email support
3. The impressive speed of the OS
Applications like WM6's Windows Live and the superb Remote Desktop Client are also available for WM5, so I don't need to miss those, otherwise I sure would, and then I might have sticked with WM6.
The new sounds and GUI are great, but I don't really miss them, since that's not a true functional thing.
Having WM5 up and running again, without freezes and memory leaking and with full HTC Universal functionality, is enough for me to be happy with it and to stick with it. If there ever will be a ROM that actually ADDS Windows Mobile 6 on top of all of this (without a single registry tweak or CAB fix needed), then it's the time for me to upgrade again.
If such a ROM will ever see the daylight, since it won't be officially available for the Universal, I don't know. I think the HTC X7500 (Athena) will be there sooner (April 2007 over here), and that one will have a official WM6 upgrade for sure. That'll be my next one, so until then: WM5 for my Universal!
So far for my opinion.

To be honest, I used them all and later delteted them after 5 2 hours. They leak a lot, ram is at minimum and useless third party applications, and a lot fo thing sodn't really work or missing (I just want a vanill aone without 3rd party applications).
Except for one rom, Darkforce, it is fast and furious, and so far I have using it for two days; battery usage is good, and no leaks. However, no video calling, and no way to set com ports for bluetooth devices. any1 has this problem?
However, common to all ROMS, no video calling, old calculator, speed dial messed up (some work and some don't), wireless connection bubble missing (yes you can install a cab but I don't want to do that).
<Mind you, contrary to other reports, I never had any freezes with any rom.
The thing that attracts me is HTML in email, High resolution mode in explorer, better remote desktop connectivity.
So I thhink I am sticking with DarkForce ROM, so far so good.
Thx

Why use WM6 over WM5?

I've tried quite a few of the WM6 ROMS (The only ones I haven't tried was Ivan's and Darkforce's). But I always see myself going back to WM5 (mostly because I miss video calling). Is it just me? or is there something about WM6 that I'm not seeing? This question is much like Windows XP vs Windows Vista... I just couldn't see any reason to use Vista.
Anyone kind enough to site the major differences or advantages between the two? (except for aesthetics, of course)
I know I could just google for comparison charts or something.. but I prefer various "user opinions" So please don't point me here: WM5 vs WM6 chart... besides, it's not very accurate since most cooked WM5 ROMS does have a few added features.

I agree with you to some extent.
In my opinion wm5 is much stable and made for the universal device that we all have.
Wm6 is not compatible and a beta app. Video call is part of the hardware and with wm6 , in-directly we have terminated that, in other words the world moves towards 3G/umts and we have made our devices fall back to 2G with wm6 crossbow which doesnot have video call.
Also its like driving hard to make wm6 perfect , which will never happen.
Its just like using a car and trying to put in a engine that is not compatible.
So I think uni devices is directly proportional to wm5. Period!
The reason I use WM6 over WM5 is this:
I love tweaking and messing around with my Universal
I'm not afraid of "bricking" it or having to reflash\loose data
I am hoping (sometimes I think, its a false hope...) that a WM6 ROM will be superior to my old WM5 one
Why the hell not?
Like I've said before - this is a forum for developers\hackers\tweakers, if you want a perfect ROM - look to your manufacturer. If you want to have some fun with your Universal (and void its warranty) then look no further!

There are a couple of apps that I find very useful, the new RDP client is much better & I use that a lot, Internet Sharing is a great tool for connecting to the Internet from my laptop on the move. The upgrade to the Office apps to support Office 2007 documents will help people who move to Off2007, but even though I use it I still save my files in Off2003 format so that the rest of the world can read them.
Apart from that I am sticking with WM5 for now because I need something that works more reliably.
I have reverted back to WM5 just after using the WM6 on universal for ~1h everytime. Reason: Its slow as compared to WM5(yeah, ironic ) and few unfixed bugs
But, what I love about WM6..
1)progress bar in Office apps. I love it when it shows the progress while opeing my big word document containing plethora of pics.
2)no 'unidentified driver' problem: many of us were getting this problem under wm5. I didn't experience it under wm6 under that 1h span though (my solution to that problem in WM5: as long as you use wisbar advance2, you will NEVER experience that problem)
3)glossy looks (though I still prefer wisbar advance)(see the screenshot attatched)
4)better phone integration
On the other hand, I m using WM6 on my wizard and its perfect
[img=http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/370/kamalxa8.th.png]
Well, I don't want to switch back to WM5. Mainly for those reasons:
1/ I don't use video Calling because NO ONE from my about 700 contacts has video calling capabilites (that's Germany ;-)
2/ The new RDP-Client is REALLY great and I use it often to connect to my Server
3/ The Messaging features like "instant search" is for me one of the most important, as I use the universal to write about 20 eMails per Day and take notes when i'm at my customers.
4/ (I know you don't want to read it ;-) The nicer looking
5/ My Universal is much faster with WM6 (not with all releases though) as with the original WM5 ROMs.
6/ The Original T-Mobile WM5 ROM is UGLY AS HELL ;-)
7/ I forgot: The Call-List in the corresponding Contact is another great Feature
If I can think of anything more, I'll tell you
I find WM6 faster and - unlike some posters - much MUCH more stable.

I too have been used such reasoning. Unfortunately after a while I came to the realisation that it was a false hope and went back to WM5.
That said, one reason to use WM6 is that the contacts app can query the DirectPush active directory to get Exchange contact details.

Hi,
I'm using WM6 (LVSW's ROM 2007-05-19) at the moment, mainly because I bought an Imate JasJam (Australian Telstra network) but use it on our "3" network and I didn't want to install the 3 Dopod ROM.
I did remove the Telstra customisations, but then lost Video call.
With LVSW's ROM, I now have video call back - Why do you say you don't have video calls in WM6????
I like to play with devices too!
Benifits so far (48 hours use) no freezes, a little faster, nicer looking & navigation plus there's a few new options but I'm not sure if they are useful to me.
Bad points - less memory storage & everyone at work is asking me about WM6!
Cheers! Oggy.
p.s. look further at video calls - it works for me!

REALLY??? Can you please give us more details as how you manage that? Links are good too.
WM5? Which AKU you are you talking about?
Here, the official WM5 release is AKU2, which is so slow that you can zZzZz.
For Cooked ROM, WM5 is up to AKU3.5 which is the one I am using, is with Video Call and fast.
WM6 still does not have video call, but there is a beta VideoCall cab which you can try, some works, some doesn't.
WM6 speed compare to WM5 AKU3.5, speed difference is marginal, but both are definitely faster than WM5 AKU1 & WM AKU2. But for WM6 to be slower than WM5, hmmm, how could this possible.
german t-mobile wm5 rom is quite unstable and unreliable. Some programs doesn't work at all on t-mobile wm5 roms (like cLaunch - ok, I know stupid example because cLaunch doesn't support vga resolutions at all... but it was the first application that came to my mind )
I'm satisfied with the functionality of wm6 roms. there is just one thing I don't like about it - how can I change the keyboard layout of an english rom? I would like to have an english rom but with the layout of a german keyboard - any ideas how to do that?

One problem with that - we have the I-Mate JasJar not the JasJam
Not meaning to flame, but as clarification:
I-Mate JasJam - - - - - I-Mate JasJar
Dopod 838Pro - - - - - Dopod 900
O2 Xda Trion - - - - - - O2 Exec
HTC Hermes - - - - - - HTC Universal
So, your WM6 ROM is different to ours
(How do I know the above? Well, I work for 3 in Australia.... )

Not very popular. Probably not more than 25 people owns a Universal in Manila.. and only 3-4 of them (including me) actually bothers to flash their ROMS since they're too scared..
85% of cellphone users here use Nokia since Nokia devices (particularly the N series) have good 3G support. Most PPC devices seen here would be the Atom, XDA II/i, and Dopod 838 Pro.
3G is very good here.. and the reason I bought a Universal is because during the time I bought this (early 2006), this was the first PPC available that supports video calling... So please somebody make video calling work on WM6.. :beg:

What are the advantages / disadvantages of WM6 over WM5

I am thinking of putting on WM6 onto my SPV M5000 and was wondering what were the advantages / disadvantages of WM6 over WM5 in everyday use. Is there a thread or comparison somewhere Ican check out
I've been running WM6 for many months now and this week reverted to WM5 - I've tried pretty much all the ROMs and WM5 simply is more stable, although not itself perfect.
The main advantage, to me, in WM6 is the Outlook client with HTML email support, although I can live without that. The terminal services / remote desktop client is better too. Other than those, the rest are just pretty fluff, but that's just *for my use*. Note: One man's fluff is another man's, erm, necessity :s

If you've used wm6, you'd find -
1. Its just as stable as wm5 (the later roms!)
2. Lots of tiny improvements
- Better phone search and dialing
- Better keyboard support all over
- Quick search in outlook messages (cant live without this!)
- Better look and feel
- Html support
- Better IE
- Latest office version support
- Lots of minor addons, which make WM5 complete by covering the gaps!
If you ask me, its a no brainer to upgrade. I suggest give one of the latest builds a try and see for yourself. If you think there are problems, you could always revert back
Cheers,

I believe that the major drawback of WM6 is the lack of Video-Call functionality. It is being introduced now, but still is buggy.
Anyway, I don't use that, as the company that pays my phone bill does not allow me to.
On the other hand, WM6 does look much better and seems to be as stable and fast as WM5, if not better. So why keep a less good looking firmware?
Also, I believe that Internet Explorer makes use of the VGA screen in WM6, while WM5 did not.
Then there are all the small things that make the phone nicer.
Cheers,
vma
memory management of wm5 is superior...
For me its the most important aspect of wm6 that must be corrected...
Other than that, wm6 are better!!

This is not WM6 limitation. It is just a minor incompatibility of old WM5 DLLs with WM6 dialer. HTC could fix this in 5 minutes if they would bother. We cannot do that as we don't have the sources.
The best WM6 changes are
- improved memory manager over WM5. In WM6 virtual address space is less wasted than in WM5. Slot 1 DLL sections can be aligned on 4 Kb boundary (64 Kb on older OSes) and resource-only DLLs are mover to slot 127
- Exchange 2007 support (html email, "company directory", search over your mailbox, etc)
- improved dialer (that is why we just cannot copy video call DLLs from WM5)
- VGA in IE
- Office 2007 document support
- some other tiny improvements for OEMs, like new resolutions (up to 480x800), ability to control led blinking in ringtone scripts (WM5 only could control vibra), secondary displays API (in WM5 only smartphones could have secondary display)
- VoIP API support in OS
These all changes should not cause major increase in OS number. WM6 is just a "WM5 second edition" or WM 5.5.
WM 6.1 improvements over WM6
- Chat-like SMS that cannot be turned off (I personally hate it, prefer old style).
- Improved memory management in DLLs. Some of the DLLs can be loaded to shared memory region - so they would not waste vitrual address space in slot 1,0 (Athena already does the same, so MS just stolen HTC idea)
- Minor IE improvements
- Improved exchange 2007 support (this is really good)
- Some minor BT stack improvements (for example it automatically uses "0000" as a pin when pairing with BT headset)
- Media player is updated. I don't know what is changes as I don't use that trash.
- Ugly task manager. Hopefully it would be more useful in release.
The amount of changes is similar to changes between WM5 and WM6. MS marketing guys may call that "WM7" in the future.
from my experience
Advantages of WM6:
all stated above by others
Disadvantages:
More battery drain
More Memory drain
Internet Sharing is not that great
Best would to have WM5 rom with WM6 icons(look and feel)......best of both worlds.
It's faster, looks better, works better and supports more enhancement patches! I already have mine looking like an iphone and working at the speed of light! WM5 is just slower and not as sharp!

Totally agree about trying it out. For me, it's borderline too unreliable and the downsides of WM5 don't *much* matter. As I said earlier, everyone will have slightly different needs, so weigh them up and take the plunge.
Thanks San, some very good points.

It's faster, looks better, works better and supports more enhancement patches! I already have mine looking like an iphone and working at the speed of light! WM5 is just slower and not as sharp!

Its just me , but personally, i think WM 6 eats more memory than WM 5, its more laggier at times, and the home-cooked rom arent as stable than the official ones, sometimes need soft reset the phone

I've tried *many* of the later ROMs and, although they've come along hugely, they are not as stable in my experience. But still, maybe my emphasis and needs are different to yours/those of others, so YMMV.
Yes, indeed, but that's what I'm calling "fluff". It's an improvement, but doesn't in all reality improve how I use the device in any way.
Can't say I noticed any difference. The keyboard, without exception, has always just worked exactly as expected for me in WM5 and WM6.
You're the second person to mention this since I reverted to WM5. Please tell me more - I feel like I probably missed out on one of the crucial improvements! I tend to use OWA when I need more than the vastly inferior (but largely adequate) Outlook client in WM5 offers.
Subjective, but I agree. However, not a sufficient improvement to justify the upgrade.
Indeed, and I miss that a lot.
The latest TMobile ROM has the "Use high res" option and I can't say I can see any difference beyond that.
Agreed, a major improvement for many users, just not for me.

Hi!
I think you're missing out the keyboard improvements & search feature-adds in wm6. This is extremely useful if you use your uni in standard flip-closed landscape mode and happen to use the keyboard often.
For example do this -
- Open messaging, and HOLD DOWN the "H" key until you get a help popup. This shows all the keyboard shortcuts for the messaging app. To activate a shortcut, just press and hold the corresponding key.
- To search for a message, all you need to do is, start typing a part of the subject/sender name and it instantaneously matches all messages matching the criteria. Its extremely useful i'm sure! For instance, if you're trying to find a message sent by someone, just start typing his name to see all messages sent by him! Or type a part of the subject! If searching in SMS'es, the name or part of the sms message itself can be searched!
- You can start typing a name out directly from your today screen, this launches the phone app and searches the name! Very quick and useful!
These 3 features alone are good enough which prevents me from rolling back to wm5! Besides, its also stable that i never need to restart my pda in days! I had a lot of trouble trying to get it stable, but the radio stack 1.15 did the trick for me! I suggest you experiment and find the version that works good with your device/operator/location!

It's actually alot of different mod's and patches! There is a Slider application with a VGA Patch and a Configuration App to have the iphone slider unlock. There is an iContact application that lets you scroll through your contacts using your finger (very nice feature to have and show off ). There is the PocketCM Keyboard with a black skin and a VGA patch (much cooler and more usable than the iphone keyboard). There's also the HTC Default black theme to give the whole PPC an iphone look and feel! If you're even more of an iphone GUI fan, you can take it a step ahead an install new icons and tweak some of the other UI elements to have fun!
You can find all of the above mentioned stuff at www.freewareppc.com.
Good luck with it

memory footprint nearly same on reboot, after a period the memory gets sucked somewhere even if you aren't using any apps. Now that somewhere is the question area.

1) Do a search on this forum for "Htc Default.tsk" to get the black theme for PPC. Put that in your "Windows" directory to see it in the "Today" settings panel
2) Download PocketCM keyboard (+Theme & VGA Patch) and install that
3) Download iContact and install that
4) Download Slider (+VGA Patch) and install that
5) Apply icons!
Lemme know if you find something else!

Funny, the iContact doesnt works on my uni, it just shows a black screen
For slider, i use S2U2 ( Slide 2 Unlock 2 ) the slider + VGA patch that u mentioned doesnt looks correct in landscape
The whole afternoon i was playing with the Touch Commander application ( emulates Touch FLO )
Where to find a working iphone launcher application for Universal?

I'm using Mo3ulla's OS 5.2.1933 Build 18533.0.7.0 ROM 2.11.09 G4M RADIO 1.18.00 ... pretty much the best i could find, iContact works fine on it!
Slider and S2U2 are separate apps and both mess up in landscape I don't use landscape so that didnt ever bother me, sorry
I haven't heard of the Touch Commander, i'll see into that ... seems interesting!
And i'm still looking for an iphone launcher cant find one yet!
and create a new thread if there's more to say regarding iphone skinning I don't want people getting bothered on this thread!
what vga iphone theme are you using ? where is it found? .... even if just a frontend....

[2007-12-12] Q-Mobile 1.0 ROM (5.2.1948 Build 18548.0.7.0)

Attention, this ROM version is now deprecated, see this thread for Q-Mobile 1.2!
Well, it was bound to happen...I love all the custom ROMs out there but none of them quite suited my needs. I'm a business traveler and as such I tend to need lots of screen real estate, and a fast device, with the best software preloaded and optimizations up the wazoo.
Introducing Q-Mobile...it's all of that and more. You can see best what applications are loaded from the screen shots below. Suffice it to say, they don't even begin to do justice to the fine grained care that has been taken to configure each application for optimum use ability. I have been working on this ROM for almost a week now--my method is far deeper than simply throwing packages and RGU files together and hoping for the best. There are literally HUNDREDS of registry tweaks and care was taken with every application added--no file was left unscrutinized or tested.
Some Highlights (this is an extremely compact feature list of what I added/removed/changed):
.Net CF 3.5
SqlCe 3.5
FULL Video Access (Main YouTube as well as m.youtube)
Custom KaiserTweak for this ROM.
Arcsoft MMS 4.2.8.1
Esmertec Java 2007.08.02
Microsoft Office 2007
Microsoft One Note Mobile
HTC Equalizer 1.0.2
HTC Random Access
TCPMP 0.81
It is worth noting that this ROM is intended for the HTC TYTN II style devices (e.g. Radio 14.09 will not work).
WWE (English) ROM : MegaUpload |RapidShare
I'd like to thank everyone on all forums but especially xda-developers. Without people like you none of this would be possible. In addition it is probably obvious that I pilfered what I considered the cream of the crop applications, ideas, graphics, etc. No doubt many reading this will realize their work in here somewhere.
P.S. You may notice a seeming lack of applications--that is because I personally heavily use Spb and Resco products to complete my device. Feel free to download individual cabs to fill in any freeware you feel should be integrated.
Enjoy,

No, I left this as part of the ROM image...check dutty's page though, he should have a link for it: http://www.cinetsystems.com/xda/index.php?path=Kaiser+Cab+Collections/

Field test is an application that exists on every device (unless it has been cooked out) and is extremely useful for troubleshooting network problems. Obviously you can remove the link for it if you don't like it--the exe is only 33KB so its not exactly a hog.
Restore Black Bars is a tiny app courtesy of jasjamming that restores black bars if you change your theme then decide to go back to the default.
SQL Query analyzer is an app that's included with the new SQL CE 3.5...I'm not really sure how useful it would be but again, its tiny so if you don't like it just remove the \Windows\Start Menu\System\SQL Query Analyzer.lnk file.

I originally wrote "nope, too sluggish for me". This is a misstatement given that TouchFLO is indeed included (as evidenced by the screen shots. TouchFLO is the application that allows finger scrolling in many apps (ala iPhone). What I was referring to was FTouchFLO/Touch Cube (the app that allows gestures to bring up special screens (other facets of the 3D view, etc). That is not included.
Keep in mind that you can tweak or turn off TouchFLO through the KaiserTweak app under Programs\System. I myself turn it off because Spb Pocket Plus offers better support and functionality in this regard.

Thxx for the explaining.
How did you get the Equalizer to work?
Too bad it does not have Touch Flo. Or else I would install this rom.
which radio?
It's late, getting sleepy......I'd like to experiment tomorrow.
What radio would you suggest using for an ATT Tilt phone?
How's the battery performance?
Any possibility of summarizing more details of the work that you've put into this ROM?
Thanks.
Downloading now!
The benchmark result looks great! I also think TouchFlo is too sluggish, it is only for people who want to have a nice look but not the speed or stability.
Thanks for sharing us!

It does not matter when you have a TITL or TyTN II. At the moment you are using Dutty's Hybrid NO.7 NUSkool RTM with Radio 1.27.12.17. So you can flash this Q-Mobile rom.
But you should know that when you flash any roms what is built from AT&T rom, you need to flash radio 1.27.14.09!!!
This thing have Connection Setup/Network Wizard? Thoughts on reliability and speed versus Dutty, anyone?
Whats the Wireless modem thingy in the connections menu ?
congrats

You can turn your device in a Wireless router.
There's no connection/network wizard, which is a bit of a shame. It's not a show stopper for me (always keep a T-Mobile cab handy on my storage card), but it could limit the adoption for this ROM.
I've just flashed and configured Activesync, here's my thoughts so far:
Appearance: Nice. It's got the cool black look, and it's even got a nice new image for WinMobile's equivalent to the hour glass - the spinning pie chart - which is more in keeping with the black feel. There's a single theme installed (good), and the splash screen is quite nice too.
Speed: Pretty good. I'd put it slightly ahead of Dutty, but perhaps slightly slower than Custel with Mobile Crack. Screen rotate is a little slow, but app switching is speedy (instantly back into messaging, or contacts).
Apps and config: There's no keyboard sliding sound icon, which might be a problem for some. I always turn it off anyway, and that's the default here. There aren't really many surprises in terms of app choices.
All in all I'm very impressed with it. I'm going to give it a few days to see if it does anything to upset me
hmm, going to def give this a try for a bit..

Sure, I was tired last night and didn't really feel like elaborating. Here goes...
All help files updated/removed to reflect current ROM state.
Default directory layout and file locations updated to be more intuitive.
Programs organized into folders reflecting their purpose.
Removed tons of unused files and settings.
Default button for Comm Manager is now single click on the record button (I miss that they removed the button the Hermes had for this).
Voice Speed Dial removed.
Default network settings removed (this never worked for me since I have an internet plan with T-Mobile and it always tried to set up the wrong one).
.Net CF 3.5 and SqlCe 3.5 are custom to my ROM (I had heard there were problems with the packages built by others so I built my own from scratch).
A *LOT* of work was done ensuring maximum media compatibility...as mentioned before streaming (mms, rtsp) protocols work, but the full version of pages like Google videos, YouTube, etc also should work.
As mentioned already there is no TouchFlo Cube, HTC Home, etc.
SQM (MS spyware) has been removed.
ClearStorage was removed (this can be accomplished via the soft buttons+reset anyway).
Sliding keyboard sounds removed (this was annoying anyway).
Lots of useless default images and templates removed.
Games removed (there are cabs for them anyway, and I personally never used them).
Windows Media player has a skin in theme with the rest of the device.
The default calculator has been removed (there are much better ones available out there--check out HP48 emu or 1-Calc).
IA Zip removed (there is the Office Mobile zip viewer, or better zip apps out there...Spb, Resco, etc).
Windows Live removed.
HTC Audio plugin added for use with WMP (works when device turned off as well).
All ringtones except one removed (feel free to set your own--this is how it should be anyway).
BT FTP removed (this is the Bluetooth FTP server/explorer which imho is quite useless).
Again I'll mention TONS of registry tweaks to make the default behavior of the device more intuitive.
Page file size set to 12MB by default.
While I'm sure this list is by no means complete it will hopefully give you a better idea of what's in/not in it. Cheers,
Great job on the rom. Work perfect for me even after i loaded all my apps.

Two very important things for me as well, from my perspective it meets both of these criteria. FYI I forgot to mention there's an app called Visual GPS available under Programs\System that is preconfigured to work on the Kaiser...if you haven't heard of/used it before it will help acquire sats faster.
What you do is:
1) Make sure QuickGPS has current data (by default I've configured it to automatically get this so it should).
2) Run Visual GPS to acquire satellite lock.
3) Launch Google Maps or TomTom.
The reasoning is that Visual GPS can acquire a satellite lock faster than either of these applications, but even a cold acquisition (no QuickGPS/VisualGPS) is sub 30 seconds for me so maybe it doesn't matter.
Cheers
Congratulations, mate... great work here

I am Starting to cook for the UNI, i would like peoples input

The story
Ive been on this forum since the blue angel was the new kid on the block and although i lost my old account and had to make this new one Ive got keen on programming and i thought the UNI needs some more life in its forum. Ive wanted this device since it came out and it has way too much potential for it to not be a lovely page, although i don't see many US people here(its hard to use GPRS after HSDPA)lol but i would think that there would be a fair amount of people using the UNI still i hope
My plan
Ive managed to collect a fair amount of build #'s and see the need for some new builds and features build into our devices i would like for people to enlighten me as to what they would like to see in their roms so i know how to start building towards that goal so please everyone give me some incite on what you guys will want and i shall start the building
i will end up having packed & vanilla versions and others upon request
hope to hear from you guys as i will be working hard on this

I'm a big fan of Vanilla's, but I'll include the list of things I usually install on the device. One thing I hope you can help shed some light on is the WM6/6.1 notification queue problem. Not everyone gets them, but there is a problem where the notification queue gets bloated and causes lockups. It seems to only occur in 6 and 6.1. In the meantime, here's the short list of things I usually install to the device:
Arcsoft MMS 5
Esmertec or Intent Java
File Explorer Extension
MS Voice Command
Some type of task manager with a true close option.
Office
PIM Backup
Thanks for asking, and thanks in advance for a great rom.
Uni doesn't support call recording if loud speaker isn't turned on. It would be great if this issue can be resolved.
Thanks mr4r4n,
I look for ROM with most free Program memory. I use nncuong ROM as it has about 31.7M on reboot, and has 21MB FlashDisk - which is most useful.
I like to be able to update programs, so if they're in ROM they can't be updated when new version comes out.
I wonder if it's possible to remove IE to make space, to allow Opera to be only browser. However, I suspect this is too intertwined with the OS.
The things I install are
HTC Tray Applet
AdvancedConfig 3.1
fringWinMob 3.24
Opera 9.5.1660 (VGA)
PocketCM 0.25c
SMSDRFixWM5 v2.0.0beta
Total Commander 2.50
TCPMP v0.81
TodayAgenda 1.1.0.3249
WkTaskL 1173c
VJCandelaLite.exe
Adobe Reader 2.5
FTouchFlo v1.4.1Oh, and that calculator can be replaced too!
NB. I think Tomal was asking same question as you a few months back: "Custom ROM for you" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=411436
Hi,
I do not care so much for the included applications, as I do install them manually when needed, anyway.
I do care for:
- Speed
- Battery life
- Stable build
- Working BT and WLAN
- Support for SDHC cards
Cheers,
vma

Yes I share with you that we are looking for a ROM to be:
- The latest version of WM
- Fast enough
- long battery life
- Stable means not have to restart every few hours
- JAVA, Adobe, ... all this kind of basic applications
- Add-ons application to be in a separate options
- Supports 3G
- Email working properly
thanks,
Thank You
First of all, just wanna say thank you for willing to be one of the last developer for UNI. I think there are only a handfull left. To answer you question, there are still people using UNI. I am one of the UNI loyal user as I still couldnt find a UNI replacement.
For the builds, I dont mind what you put in the ROM, as long as the build is stable, and all basic functions are operatable (VC-tho nobody has ever make it happen in WM6 yet, IR, bluetooth, WIFI, internet sharing etc).
I love my two Universals. Have not yet seen a better device.
I do have an HP iPaq 514 which I purchased recently and I expect a VDA GPS (Toshiba G710) to arrive, but those are more for fun - you do need something new from time to time...
...but the Universal is still the best phone around. There is nothing lacking, except perhaps built-in GPS.
And the screen and its resolution is just fantastic.
Cheers,
vma
