hey there i have a situation my girlfriend is going to japan and she uses a htc vox (s720 i think), and i want to know if it is possible for her to use the phone in japan since her phone uses a simcard and she tells me that most phones there dont use sim cards. can any1 help with this? if so wich is a preferred service provider and all that thank you
Due to different technologies used, mobile phones from your home country, including GSM phones, are likely not to work in Japan. Instead, short time visitors to Japan can rent mobile phones or purchase prepaid phones through various companies, some of which have a counter at the airports.

Hi guys,
Easy questions I hope:
I've never (yet) got into the area of unlocking phones and I would appreciate someone just answering a couple of questions to make sure I've got the general idea of unlocking.
1.
Am I right in thinking that you have to unlock a phone so that you can use a different provider's SIM card - instead of using one that is provided at purchase time?
e.g if I have an XDA supplied by O2, I could unlock the XDA and then use a SIM card from T Mobile?
2.
Do I need to unlock my phone EVERY time I put a SIM card from a different provider in it? Or once the phone is unlocked I do not need to do it again?
e.g. If I unlock my XDA, put in an O2 SIM card, and then go on a flight abroad, can I simply pull out the O2 card and pop in one from a local shop in a different country?
3.
Do I need to keep a record of anything before I unlock it?
e.g. Are any settings needed to be recorded BEFORE YOU START in order to unlock the phone ? Do I need to record information so that in the future I can put things back exactly as they originally were.
4.
Is there any differences between unlocking phones that have PAYG or CONTRACT cards? Are there any issues here?
Thanks for answers
Anne
In the USA a un-locked fone will bring more money used or new. and also has a wider seller/buyer market.
Once unlocked that's it. any sim anytime.
we have 5 fones between the two of us ( me and my better 1/2)
2 nokia's, a palm treo, a behold and a behold II (rooted 12/1/2009)
We have just our personal sim cards from T mobile (one each) we work weird, REALLY wierd hours. Some times our smart fones don't get charged or go dead while we are out. We just pop the sim cad into one that's got enough juice to get one of the "better" fones charged.
We both rely on our fones for our jobs.
A little know fact: in the USA it's a federal law. IF you bought your fone legitamatly. IE: not stolen. the carrier must provide you with the un-lock code in 24 hours.
The people that pay 15.00 or more to have a fone unlocked are either. Un-aware of that law. In a country where it's illegal to unlock a fone. Or knowingly have a stolen fone.
1: So yes you are right you need to un-lock the fone to use another provides fone with your sim.
2: You un-lock the fone once any sim card will work after that. AGAIN your right. (provided your in a country that has the same GSM 3g 4g network)
3: ALWAYS keep a written log of any "admin" #'s given to you for a fone.
the behold has a admin # that lets you turn on all kinds of things that are "off" out of the box. and you need that # everytime you make a adminastrative change. This maybe true with other fones as well.
4: I don't know about pay as you go. I would think once unlocked you would be able to use the fone pay as you go, so long as you had minutes on the sim installed.
I'm sure there are alot of people here that know alot more than me, and can help you further. I just got back into the cell fone game about a year ago and was out of it for about 10 years.
Things have really changed, then again they really haven't changed.

One thing of note is that just because a GSM phone is unlocked, doesn't mean it'll work with every carrier, as carriers will sometimes use different baseband frequencies (there are four, 850, 900, 1800, 1900mHz I think) and some phones only support 2-3 our of 4.
I'm in Canada for example, where Rogers and Fido support GSM networks (phones that use SIM cards), Bell and Telus use CDMA (phones that have ESNs programmed into them). So if I buy a Sony Xperia X1 for example, I have to be sure to buy the American version, as Rogers only supports 850mHz, and the European version of the X1 will only support 900mHz. So even if I unlock the european version of the X1, I can't use it on Rogers in Canada.
I'm guessing you're from the UK, where the market is even more diversified. 3 Mobile for example, can only use phones that support 3G (or HSDPA). A good place to look for such specs, after finding out what frequencies your carrier supports, is GSM Arena.
Hello all.
Now recently Net10 started selling Android phones that run on CDMA network in the U.S.
The problem is that CDMA doesn't use sim chips so I can't simply buy one from Net10 (which they do sell) because their Android phones run on CDMA and not GSM like all of their other phones.
So basically I would like to know which phone I can buy that is dual-band or CDMA which has a 4.3" (OR LARGER) screen and that can be configured for their network.
I would appreciate some recommendations and information on how I would be able to program a CDMA phone to work with Net10.
I really like Droid X's, Samsung Galaxies, HTC Evo's, etc... The higher-end Android phones with the larger screens are very nice and I would really love to rock one of these on the Net10 service. The phones they offer only have the 3.2" screens which leave a LOT to be desired!!
Please help me find nice Android phones that can be programmed and help me program them all!!!
Thank You!!!
For real not even a single suggestion after 34 views??
Cmon people plz!!
Your issue is not a lot of people use Net10. And in the end CDMA carriers can deny the use of any phone they chose if it is not made for their network.
Well in comparison to all of the other prepaid carriers Net10 is the absolute best with coverage and reliability.
Can't I just try it with a Droid 2 Global? Perhaps enter the correct network settings, dial *22888, and even have Net10 add the MEID if they have to??
Does anybody have any ideas please??
Hi guys
So, I got a friend that is going to Japan next month and I thought that she can buy me a new cell phone (galaxy s4 or xperia ZR) there.
I've been reading on the net that it is really difficult to buy a cell phone or even a sim card if you are no resident. It depends on the store that you are buying.
My question is: Is this cell phone going to work in my country, this case Brazil.
I asked this because in the past Japanese cell phones didn't use sim cards and networks where different, and I don't know how is it now.
Also, it can be network locked so it would't work with my carrier here.
any of you have some experience buying a cell phone in japan?
Thank you very much in advanced

I would advise buying against phones from Japan because most of them are tailored to their weird networks (general statement). I'd check what frequencies are used by your carrier and what frequencies the phone you're friend is going to buy supports. Japanese phones in general are usually made to operate in Japan with minimal support for extended use in other countries (e.g. you may get EDGE but that's it).
Thank you very much.
Looking on the web, I saw that there is a Sony store that sells international versions of their products. (And also a tax reduction )
Maybe I can find something there, looking at the webpage didn't find any cell phones.
Problem: My partner has the Motorola Photon Q 4G Lte Phone on Sprint. This phone is unlocked software-ware wise and has the antennas to work on Vodaphone when we are overseas in a few months. But, sprint has physically soldered the Sim Card to the mother board of the phone so you cannot remove the sim and pop in a local sim when you get overseas, forcing you to use Sprint's prohibitively expensive international roaming service.
There is a guy who advertises on the web that he can modify the phone from a hardware perspective, but, his service requires mailing the phone to him in another country. I do not think I have the skills to do physical modification to a phone,
I see some software upgrade posts on here relative to the GSM radios, but, they are a bit to technical for me. Happy to have a hardware or software solution to this.
Goal is to be able to put a vodaphone sim or program phone to work on vodaphone, or similar carrier, while over in europe.
Can anyone help?
Well, you seem to already know of the guy who you can send the phone to...
So how did you miss this thread?
Good News !!! SIM CARD MOD IS HERE !!!
You can certainly try the mod yourself, there are some good pictures and information in that thread if you want to.
There is no software way around this issue. The only solution is a hardware one, as shown in that thread.
Hello, I had an Oppo mobile and last year I wanted to travel to the US, and I looked on a web page at the coverage/frequencies that my mobile had in relation to US companies and it came out that it did not cover the frequencies of T Mobile, and others. And that's why I bought a new mobile, an Oppo A54S, but this year wanting to buy a T mobile prepaid Sim card so as not to have surprises when I arrive in the US, I entered the T Mobile website and when I had to enter my IMEI to to see if my mobile was compatible, they told me no. Now the fear I have is that if I even travel with a Sim card from a Spanish company with roaming in the US it won't work for me either, because they told me that without compatible VoLTE, I won't be able to make or receive calls with those devices on US networks. And I am desperate because I have put the IMEI of the 4 cell phones that we have at home that had coverage with the frequencies of the US operators, but when I put the IMEI of each one to see if they are co-compatible in T mobile, none is. Can anybody help me ? thank you

Help with what specifically.
I have asked for help here because the T mobile community has put up your website, because what we do not understand is why none of the mobile phones we have tell us that the t mobile page is not compatible, and what we want to know is if The mere fact that the t mobila page says that our phones are not compatible to carry your sim, we wonder if we travel with phones with a Spanish sim card that has roaming in the US, it will work or not. thank you
Can someone help me please ?

So you are asking why Spanish phones can’t use a American SIM?

No, I'm asking if my phone will work with my Spanish phone and a sim card bought in Spain that has roaming in the US, that's simply what I'm asking when T mobile tells me that my phone won't work in the US
