Contacts Missing after upgrade to WM6 (sprite backup) - HTC Tornado

Hi All, I upgraded my tornado to WM6 successfully today. Everything works fine except accessing my contacts. When i press the contacts button on main screen nothing happens! If i try getting to my contacts via the start key also nothing happens. I'm using Sprite Backup 5.2 and performed a backup and restore as described on the sprite website below.
Can anybody please assist me with this? Thanks, Alex.

Did you backup in WM5 and restore in WM6? Overwriting WM6 registry with the WM5 one isn't such a good idea. Hard reset your phone and restore ONLY My Documents, Email and Personal Databases, NOT the System Data!!!

WM5's pim.vol is not compatible with WM6
you should:
- reinstall WM5
- restore backup
- backup with PIMbackup ( http://www.dotfred.net/ )
- install WM6
- restore with PIMbackup
PIMbackup is a PPC application, but works also on smartphones

You backed it using the old version of Sprite Backup which was not compatible with WM6. Sprite Backup 6 can/should be able to handle the ROM upgrade... at this point the option DSF gave you is your best bet to solve the problem ... either that or you can roll back to WM5, restore your information then upgrade to Sprite6 and try it again.

Ok, Thanks guys i'll do as suggested by DSF. Thanks for the help!

Duplicate system using SPB Backup or ...?

Lets say I have two G3 version, CID unlocked Wizards. Call them W1 and W2.
I installed WM6 (X-plorer 1.1) and all software I need on one of them (W1). Everything is fine.
W2 is still stock TMobile WM5 device.
1. If I make full SPB Backup image of W1, can I then take that image and install it on W2, making it WM6 device ? If not ....
2. Can I upgrade W2 to be WM6 device and then apply image from W1 ? If not ... what would you suggest.
Basically idea is to make copy of W1 and move it to W2. I dont want to install software and tweaks on both devices
Any suggestions ?

I would say, flashing the secound W2 and then restoring the backup of W1 would be the safer way. But for me no backup worked perfectly although it has been the same device with the same OS. Sometime active sync didn´t function anymore - the other time messaging was not able.
Give it a try. When you just flash W2 - you get WM6.
And when restoring is worse - you make a hardreset and install.
It´s hard work but it will work.
Btw - wait on Xplore 2.0 before startin!!

I have created a backup of my WM5 using SPB-Backup, then proceeded to load WM6, and ran the backup. Everything seemed to transfer over alright

So you initially had WM5 and SPB Backup image was for WM5, right ? Then you upgraded to WM6 and then run backup ...
1. did you end up having WM6 or WM5 ?
2. That was on the same device, right ?

I'm surprised (and question whether) this worked. WM5 and WM6 use different PIM databases. I did something similar the first time I moved to WM6 and found it completely hosed up where outlook couldn't find the database and I couldn't get sms or anything.
From what I've read, and my own experieince, you should not restore a full backup (like from spb backup) from one type of rom to another.
As for the OP question, spb backup (and similar) do not copy the actual rom. So to do this, you'd have to install XPlore 1.1 onto both, configure the one, then backup and restore onto the other. Even then, I'm not sure if thats a great idea, but it should work.

restoring your PPC guide

Thanks everyone for providing a great resource here.
I've searched and searched but I can't find inthe forum or the wiki a difinitive guide to restoring your device after upgrading. if possible can someone make a wiki or if I have somehow missed it point me in the right direction?
what I know is limited, but here maybe the start of a wiki
After using the guides to upgrade your PPC, you want to get it back to how it was before
1.Activesyc device (but it looses previous settings can this be fixed?)
2. restore just mail using Spb backup (is this safe? does anyone know of a better way to get your MMSs and SMSs back?
3.make a CAB with all the files and settings using winCE CAB manager (if anyone can help a little here that would be great)
how do we install progs to storage card?
in regards to adding registry keys, I assume we backup the registry then change the settings and/or install the programs that we want then compare the current registry with the previous one and then whatever new has been added then this is what we should add?
4.do we have to reinstall programs that sync seperately? eg phatnotes or ewallet?
Thanks
I can answer a little for you,
1 = only wm2003 can restore more than pocket outlook info
2 = spb is not safe for upgrades, though I have read of people doing it. Try PIM Backup v1.9 (Release date 15/05/2007) by dotfred
3 = make your own extended rom (or even your own rom). or keep cab files for everything on a storage card in one file, and install one after the other after a flash.
4 = i don't understand the question
try sprite backup. it is able to restore accross rom upgrades

Sprite Backup 6.2.1 and Treo 750

What version of Sprite Backup are you using ?
Did you get working scheduled backups with version 6.2.1 ?
Not me. I'm still in contact with Sprite's support.
Thanks for your feedback
Calico
I'm still using 5.1.0, Build 1447.
It's been working just fine with my 750.
Im using ver 6.1 and it works fine with my wm6.1 full edition.
Ok, i got a patch from Sprite. Now my version also works again.
I have been using Sprite backup for a long time and for the most part it works great.
I've had some problems since upgrading to WM6 though ... a lot of times I'd get "unexpected errors" and cannot backup at all, even right after a soft-reset.
I can, however, backup successfully if I initiate the backup from the PC instead of from the phone itself. The content is still backed up to the SD card on the phone, the only difference is I have to start the backup from the PC console.
Anybody experienced the same problem? At least the workaround works ...

A way to take complete backup?

Hi there,
I have another question today where I did not find any anwer to by searching the forum.
I am now about to give the Dr. Gonzo WM61 ROM a try. However in the unlikely case I do not like it I would like to go back to the original WM60 ROM provided by HTC.
As my current installation is heavily customized, is there any way to save the current installation and put it back if required? I mean with all settings, installed software etc.?
Something which I can easily do on a Windows PC by using software like Trueimage oder Ghost.
Is there a way to achieve this with Windows Mobile somehow?
Many thanks already for your thoughts.
Have a nice day
Andi
You can use Sprite Backup program but it is not recomanded to restore settings from one rom to another...
No problem with using sprite backup if you revert to your original rom.
Just reflash it. Install Sprite backup. Restore your backup and everything should be back as it was before flashing 6.1.
However if you keep 6.1, then you are better to re-install all your applications rather than restoring from the backup, unless you are carefull to only restore things that do not conflict with the new version.
Yes, heed the above advice. If you are WM6.0 and upgrading to 6.1 - make a complete and self-extracting backup using Sprite Backup. If you decide you don't like WM6.1, drop back to your original ROM and you can restore your backup to exactly how it was prior to your upgrade.
You can merge specific data from 6.0 to 6.1 however registry entries will not come over properly - which means all you can really restore are SMS and PIM.
EDIT: Double Post

This can be done by means enabling the r2sd function in the SPL. Unfortunately this is not really user friendly
Many thanks
Hello,
I am overwhelmed of that many answers and just say a big thank you to all who answered.
Will give SpriteBackup a serious try now, maybe also try the "user unfriendly" r2sd function afterwards.
Many many thanks for you, really making this forum a great platform!

PIM Backup (free app) will do exactly that and backup messages, emails, sms, contacts, calender but not system settings, programs.
For that you will need something like sprite backup etc (paid app).
Of course, if you had a downloaded copy of your stock rom, all you need is the program cabs, and you will always get your programs back
