Lets say I have two G3 version, CID unlocked Wizards. Call them W1 and W2.
I installed WM6 (X-plorer 1.1) and all software I need on one of them (W1). Everything is fine.
W2 is still stock TMobile WM5 device.
1. If I make full SPB Backup image of W1, can I then take that image and install it on W2, making it WM6 device ? If not ....
2. Can I upgrade W2 to be WM6 device and then apply image from W1 ? If not ... what would you suggest.
Basically idea is to make copy of W1 and move it to W2. I dont want to install software and tweaks on both devices
Any suggestions ?

I would say, flashing the secound W2 and then restoring the backup of W1 would be the safer way. But for me no backup worked perfectly although it has been the same device with the same OS. Sometime active sync didn´t function anymore - the other time messaging was not able.
Give it a try. When you just flash W2 - you get WM6.
And when restoring is worse - you make a hardreset and install.
It´s hard work but it will work.
Btw - wait on Xplore 2.0 before startin!!

I have created a backup of my WM5 using SPB-Backup, then proceeded to load WM6, and ran the backup. Everything seemed to transfer over alright

So you initially had WM5 and SPB Backup image was for WM5, right ? Then you upgraded to WM6 and then run backup ...
1. did you end up having WM6 or WM5 ?
2. That was on the same device, right ?

I'm surprised (and question whether) this worked. WM5 and WM6 use different PIM databases. I did something similar the first time I moved to WM6 and found it completely hosed up where outlook couldn't find the database and I couldn't get sms or anything.
From what I've read, and my own experieince, you should not restore a full backup (like from spb backup) from one type of rom to another.
As for the OP question, spb backup (and similar) do not copy the actual rom. So to do this, you'd have to install XPlore 1.1 onto both, configure the one, then backup and restore onto the other. Even then, I'm not sure if thats a great idea, but it should work.

i've heard that WM2003 in himalaya gadget can be uprade to WM2005, it's very interesting and i going to try the uprade, but i have some question about the upgrade, my question is:
1. what's the risk during upgrading? could my device occuring some permanent error?
2. what's the consequence of this? will my device working slower? or working faster?
3. if i don't satisfy with the WM2005 can i downgrade back to the WM2003 OS?
please help me by answering my question
Response:
1. the device may fail, but you can restart the whole process entering the device in bootloader mode and upgrading (happen to me once)
2.Your device will work Faster but sometimes (at boot sequence) will be slower.
that's the price you have to pay. Other thing is there is no MMS in WM5 (dont work for me) and some camera issues, that can be fixed. But is more eye-candy than the WM2003 or 2003SE.
3. If you aint satisfied you can go back to 2003SE just putting the device in bootloader mode and then making the upgrade using a WM2003 ROM (the nbf file)
One thing: Tofclock and Buzz (thanks guys!) are working hard to bring us one stable, better and faster WM5 ROM, so be quiet and wait like me
Hi guys,
I ve also heard that after you upgrade to Wm 5.0 the phone vibratin wont work, is that true?
what else then?
Thanks
Hi dickyw,
my vibration on my Himalaya works perfect...
Hi Guys,
Can anyone help another dumb newbie?
I upgraded my Himalaya to W2k5 OK from the O2 exe file, but I now want to downgrade to 2003 SE.
The folder I am trying to use to downgrade is WindowsMobile2003SE_XDA2_2.20.00CHS-translated.zip
Himaupgradeut.exe gives:- Error 120 Country ID error 1-1-8-n-1
HimaupgradeUt_noid.exe gives:- Error 103 ROM image file not found
XDA image tool gives me:-Unsupported file format error for NK.nbf
I have:-
Boot loader 1.06
CE image 1.72.00
Extended image 1.72.181
Radio image 1.17.00
Am I using the wrong tools, the wrong ROM or an incorrect procedure? I'm doing this for a friend so it's getting very embarassing. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.
Thanks, Mike
Another issue to aware of when upgrading to WM5 is that you need to also upgrade to Activesync 4.1 as 3.8 won't work any more. Given that AS can be very tempremental it may take some time to get the sync link back up and working to your satisfaction so if your data is cruitial to your work then backup, backup, backup and upgrade when you have a few days free to dedicate to ironing out any wrinkles.
Then also xbackup doesn't work in WM5 so you are left with options like buying the latest Sprint backup soiftware (now WM5 compatible) or relying upon your PC Outlook to be your "backup data" (NB I use the Outlook free "backup" util to back up my pst files on exiting Outlook as double insurance).
Regards - Mallow1
PS I upgraded and v glad I did. Had a few AS issues but eventuall got there (took a lot of reading of forums and As battles, but worth it in the end)
cnimike,
One assumes that you have unzipped the zip file first before trying to reflash? If not try that (say use winzip). Also try reading the wiki as a guide to what to do (seee link attop left of page).
You are also best o use the HimaupgradeUt_noid.exe as at least it avoids the first error (esle you'll have to edit the flash files first and recompile them which is straight forward but if you are a noobie it's a step that can be avoided by using the "...noid.exe") and if you haven't unzipped the said file doing that may well sort out your second error.
Get back to me if you need more help.

I would suggest getting a hold of Sin's merged version (details in signature) or XDA2JoJo's version. Simply flash the ROM and you are there. Elsewhere, SIN has set out the steps in the most detailed fashion you are going to see outside a software manufacturer's manual.
Can I use a backup program to reinstall applications after a rom update. I have tested every rom that came out but manually reinstalled all the apps after rom update. Any help would be great.
Thanks ,
Victoria
That's not a good idea: if the registry structure has been changed, from the previous rom to the new one, when you restore your backup, it can really mess things up!
Thanks for the quick reply. its a pain to do the installs on my jasjar but its double with the O2 exec XDA as well. Best to do it the wright way
I use the Rom upgrade utility from Sprite and it does the job always. No issues yet. Follow the instructions to the letter though..
I use SpbBackup with great results, but like vmiguel said, you shouldn't restore backups between ROM flashes as it restores ALL settings and registry entries, and this aint a good idea unless on the same ROM.
U shld freshly install every app after a clean ROM upgrade as it would also speed up ur device.
i have a question.
All softwares work good for WM5 will work on WM6?
Thanks

That depends on the software. Most work well, others require WM6 support.
SPB BAckup... and it is in my folder....
try
is there a NORTON GHOST-like program for pocket pc ? a software that will allow me to create a total image of my sd card and rom so i can restore it later ? thanks
yes it does but only apps
yes it does but only apps no rom backup is the spb clone for ppc
I suppose any backup software could get it. I use HP backup to backup the whole data. I even could restore them after hard reset to continue using as before. So I suppose it should be like Ghost thing totally.
so how excatly do i backup my phone ?
Spbclone will do the card, but I don't think it will do the ROM
Incidently, whatever happened to the backup/restore function which was in the early Activesync software? Why did MS leave it out?
Edit
LOL. I never noticed the price - $299
yeah yeah
yeah the spbclone only do a file like backup (no rom backup) if you want a rom backup with the apps inside you will cook the rom
greetings
enjoy it
suppose i upgrade my OS from one version of WM5 to another newer version of WM5....will spb clone allow me to restore my settings and installed apps on the new OS ??
Hi there,
I have another question today where I did not find any anwer to by searching the forum.
I am now about to give the Dr. Gonzo WM61 ROM a try. However in the unlikely case I do not like it I would like to go back to the original WM60 ROM provided by HTC.
As my current installation is heavily customized, is there any way to save the current installation and put it back if required? I mean with all settings, installed software etc.?
Something which I can easily do on a Windows PC by using software like Trueimage oder Ghost.
Is there a way to achieve this with Windows Mobile somehow?
Many thanks already for your thoughts.
Have a nice day

You can use Sprite Backup program but it is not recomanded to restore settings from one rom to another...
No problem with using sprite backup if you revert to your original rom.
Just reflash it. Install Sprite backup. Restore your backup and everything should be back as it was before flashing 6.1.
However if you keep 6.1, then you are better to re-install all your applications rather than restoring from the backup, unless you are carefull to only restore things that do not conflict with the new version.
Yes, heed the above advice. If you are WM6.0 and upgrading to 6.1 - make a complete and self-extracting backup using Sprite Backup. If you decide you don't like WM6.1, drop back to your original ROM and you can restore your backup to exactly how it was prior to your upgrade.
You can merge specific data from 6.0 to 6.1 however registry entries will not come over properly - which means all you can really restore are SMS and PIM.
EDIT: Double Post

This can be done by means enabling the r2sd function in the SPL. Unfortunately this is not really user friendly
Many thanks
Hello,
I am overwhelmed of that many answers and just say a big thank you to all who answered.
Will give SpriteBackup a serious try now, maybe also try the "user unfriendly" r2sd function afterwards.
Many many thanks for you, really making this forum a great platform!

Hi all, I am about to upgrade my fathers Touch Pro (EU version) from the stock WM 6.1 Fr to Taels 6.5 version.
Nevertheless I need help on 3 very important questions, and that is why I come to you.
I have already installed the HSLP so that part is done, and I have used PIM backup for the contacts, sms, calendar, email and logs.
1) So the question is, will a PIM backup done in WM6.1 be able to restore everything in WM6.5 or will there be some incompatibility issues?
2) As you might know TAEL ROM is an English ROM, but the Touch Pro has an AZERTY keyboard. Is there a way to correctly map ALL the hardware keys on the phone? If yes, how?
3) Finally, if my father does not like the phone the way it is, can I go to the HTC website and download the latest official WM6.1 ROM for the phone and just flash it even with the HSPL on. I don't really need to remove it as it is not in the guarantee any more, but I would like to know if I need to do something to be able to flash the old ROM in.
Thank you all for your help.
Please urgent answers, as I am supposed to do everything today.
1. In my experience, pim back up could be buggy with 6.5. It's been a while since I used it (probably 1.5 yrs), but I highly recommend backing up in multiple ways. Do the pimbackup, also just copy pim.vol to the sd card (that's the method I use). If you have sk tools, use it to backup the pim info. You can also install myphone (or just windows live) and back it up that way. Seriously, you can't have too many backups, in case of a snafu.
To restore pim.vol, right after the flash copy it (don't move it, copy it) with total commander back to the device root and then immediately do a soft reset. I don't know why, but sometimes it doesn't update properly if you screw around for a while before resetting the device. Or, just restore with pimbackup. It will probably be slow.
2. Dunno.
3. Yes, you can flash whatever you want with hard spl. Don't bother over-writing it with the stock spl if you decide to go back to stock (unless it's for warranty reasons).
Hi Farmer Ted, thanks for your responses.
I've done the procedure yesterday and I can answer my questions if anyone has them too.
1) So regarding the first one, PIM backup will recover all your contacts, logs, mms and sms. I have had an error when it came to e-mail, but you can configure that anyway and through imap4 you should not loose any.
2) The second response was given by some people already on XDA, and that is to go to the regedit of the phone. Thankfully tael had one already pre-installed and now I'll just copy paste what I've found:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\KEYBD\CurLang
change the value in hex 40C
Then save the changes and reboot the phone.
Thankfully all the fn keys work as intended.
PS: The software keyboard will not change unless you install a different one on it.
Regarding my last question, I still did not fully understand the answer. If I go to HTC, download the latest official ROM for the phone, can I flash it straight away, even though I have HSPL 1.9 olex in the phone?
Note: I don't need to remove it for warranty reasons, but I don't want to brick the phone by having it on when installing the official WM6.1 release.
Thanks for all your help so far.
Just so you know, I have flashed the stock ROM after I downloaded it from the HTC support site and have not experienced any issues without having to flash stock spl
Thank you very much (+1 thank), this information was very useful to me.
