My browser seizes up when threads get more than 1000 posts - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario ROM Development

Wondering if those of you who have fantastically popular ROMs, or the moderators of those threads, could possibly start new threads for new ROMs, or maybe make stickies with the links & descriptors of the ROMs and another sticky for the forums about them or maybe even responders, like regular people, junior members and the like, could split off specific issues.
I know, I know, I need a new PC.... I did just get a new router; I'm hoping that might help a tiny bit.
Anyone else having trouble accessing busy threads? Any ideas how to solve?

FAQ

OK ive been on this forum for some time. i dont have the many hours that lots of you appear to have to spend modding and adjusting the various XDA type devices covered on here.
My back ground is in electronics and not programing. I like to play with making things like adapters and connection devices. I get frustrated with my in ability to get the electronics to do what i want because it requires the programming side.
I have spent as much time as i can searching and following cross linked threads to find out the things i want to. it is also compounded by the various names and obvious differences between the same models and regions.
I have read the many posts by new people or people like myself who know what they want but dont always get the wording or the area that it is posted in correct. Many of the established members post the usual 'try searching before you post a question' well thats fine but if you dont know what you are looking for then how can you??
So the board has an FAQ section, to be honest that would be the first place i would look for information, there isnt much there to help people, its more about how to post stuff on the board and not FAQ on devices.
Im sure a lot of the new posts would be avoided if the established members/mods set up a list of the FAQ that people ask in there. The obvious ones like what the various terms are, A2DP etc... A list of various patches and what they do, a dload section for drivers, reg editors etc.
Now im wanting to get my XDA2i and Mini s to do what i want, i need to know this info.
Many people will just apply patches etc... i would like to see possibly an area that explains how and why things do what they do to help me understand more so i dont ask those anoying questions that the established members know the answers to.
So how about it MODS/Established members??
The FAQ link is there since we changed the forum to vBulletin, but it's a "default" vBulletin FAQ, not customized to xda-developers in any way.
The place to search for information is the wiki, there you'll find a lot of information on all the devices, and you have the possibility to edit it if you feel there's something missing.
I try to mantain the Hermes wiki up to date, it has a Hermes for Beginners section, a Hermes FAQs section, and a upgrading specific FAQ section.
But even with all the info on the wiki, and sticky posts in all the 3 hermes forums telling people to read the wiki before posting, we are getting the same questions again and again...

I refuse to answer / respond to a thread that does not have a Title that helps anybody else in the future to find information. People complain about not being ble to find stuff here, well this doesn't help at all. This is now the 2nd or 3rd thread with a subject like this (and they are different topics in each).
Learn to post properly please as it will only help the community.

you just responded to it. just kidding. seriously though, i couldn't agree more. give some indication of what your looking for/need help with in your title.
Thread title changed!
(hopefully it's clear enough)
search for softkeyapplet.cpl
read the information on Smartskeys in this thread. some of the custom rom builders have it pre-installed in their roms, since the program definitely helps with one handed use.

Sound profile keeps changing in Dutty's WM6.1 5.2.19209

Not sure if this has been disccused but I couldn't find any threads on this. When I have my profile set to ring sometime I noticed that it switched to silent.
The only thing I have running is the HTC home plug in so I don't think I have a conflicting program.
Any ideas?
It's your radio check out the wiki it will explain it to you. My phone was doing the same till I read up on it
It may also be the "Automatic" profile, which switches to silent when your calendar says you're in a meeting.

dont u have automatic profile activated? It switches profiles according to your appointments (if u have an appoint. it mutes your sound). Check it in HTC HOME.

Looks like I was too slow.
Sorry for the 'threadjack', but I didn't want to open another thread....
I'm actually having the opposite problem, with both of Dutty's most recent ROM's 4/9 and 4/16, the Automatic Profile is not working for me....I'm using the stock radio that's cooked in with the ROM. I dug through the registry, and it looks like there are some parameters, but I have no clue what they correspod to and how they should be set.
I think it might have to do with the version of HTC Home as I had no problem in the Hybrid ROM or with TNT's.
Any ideas?
HTC Home issues possibly.

The HTC Home is causing some various problems in the latest Dutty ROM. Try something for me, try disabling the Music tab in your HTC Home and see if that helps. It's been reported to help fix peoples GPS issues.
Please next time refrain from creating a new thread and post it in Dutty's thread.
Thank you.
Mod's can we please close this thread.

I appreciate the desire to try and reduce the number of threads, but I had already posted in there and it just got burried....instead of just closing all the offshoot threads, maybe we could have a few additional threads by topic area, i.e. Dutty Radio Compatibility, Dutty 3rd Party App Integration, Dutty OS Crashes.....something along those lines....I mean lets be realistic the Dutty threads grow to an enormous size that just make them unbearable to really get anything asked without being an ass and reposting your question 10 times.....that's the reason these types of threads get created....so maybe there's some other solutions to look at?

No dice unfortunately....I'm still thinking it's a difference the versioning of the HTC Home as I think the builds are different IIRC.
I've tried hunting down the registry paraemeters and couldn't find anything informative in my searches

yes, by reading Dutty's thread. I understand your concern as these post come up everyday and the fact that the question doesn't get answered right away usually means two things.
1.) already been answered
2.) No solution exist
I would actually prefer the question to be asked 10 times in Dutty thread then creating a whole new thread about a simple problem that has nothing to do with ROM development. This is a software related issue.
Honestly the search button is your best friend. I guarantee this question has been asked before.
If somebody simply posted the solution to every problem when somebody created a new thread do you realize how many new threads would have been created and then the spoon feeding would continue as it does.
I also appreciate your concern for coming up with new ways to solve the problem but creating a new thread about a existing thread is not going to solve them problem its just going to clutter up the already cluttered Kaiser ROM Development thread.

I second that. However, I'm using Dutty's Apr01 Hybrid and having major sound profile issues - sometimes muting itself, but sometimes turning itself up from muting! If anyone has any tips, we're hanging out here (post 1544).

I can definitely understand the desire to reduce threads, just to be clear, my suggestion was to create just a couple additional threads in key topic areas. That way you reduce the main thread by a factor of that number, and make each of the appropriate topic threads easier to search through etc. Those threads could be linked in the first post of Dutty's and it would be straightforward.
I'll keep hunting around and searching though.
Heh, and now that the thread as really been derailed it should probably be closed
Does not warrant a new thread....
Post this in the thread regarding the Rom in question.

[Forum Request] Separate Sub-Forums

The theme and apps sub-forum is getting pretty crowded. Is there any way we could separate it into two sub-forums? One for themes and one for apps?
No, I thinkk, it's just okay so.
I did a few themes and it works fine at XDA.
I wouldn't mind separating them... just my opinion.
It might seem ok now, but as theming gets a little easier, and the wealth of ROMs spread - it is going to get hard to find threads. I agree with having themes and apps separate.

+1 on that
+1 too, at the moment it is fine, but it will get worse overtime as more apps and more themes come out and more nexus one owners arrive
I sorta mentioned this in the cyan thread except I suggested different threads for each major release so it was easier to follow peoples' findings. Even with different sub forums for themes/apps/roms, sifting through 100s of pages to read what others are finding to see if an upgrade is right for you is a very daunting chore.
Any help with sorting though will make the user experience more digestible me thinks
+1 I made a topic about this earlier
more sub-forums, means more threads, more sub-threads under master-threads (for each release as suggested above) create even more threads, more threads create more confusion and more noobs posting "help I can't get root", "my phone lost root after nand restore", "my phone turned into bacon" in more threads and sub-threads then ever, making it even harder to navigate and find answers.
what XDA would really need is a tag cloud
+1 to that as well.
+1 for split.

Unless you can tag specific posts as the starting off point for certain releases (CM5b1 starts at post 25 in thread 1234 vs CM5stable4 starts at post 567 in thread 1234), a tag cloud wouldn't fix one particular issue
My biggest gripe is sifting through a ****ton of pages/posts to find out what people are having problems with to see if an upgrade is worth it or to skip a cycle and see what comes next. No, sub forums will not resolve that gripe but possibly creating a new topic for each major milestone would.
Sub forums however become not required with a tag cloud. I would love the ability to simply click "themes" or "trackball colour" or "cyanogen"...
making sub forums makes it easier to search for stuff....
personally I would like to see a split between discussions about issues and apps for rooted devices from those that are about stock apps / devices. There is a lot of good stuff in the forums for me (non-rooted) but there is (rightly) a lot of discussion about rooting and apps that need root - It would help me if I could filter these out.

Problem with ATPlugininstaller....

I have an interesting problem with ATPlugininstaller.
I installed chome editor v1.6 on my wm6.5 device.
At first it was working fine, and I created 2 plugins using it.
THEN, I decided to add the "day of the week" to the clock panel, by placing code directly in the titanium.cpr files.
Well, the weekday was added successfully, BUT now, I CAN'T use chome editor to create new panels, and I CAN'T install any plugin that uses the ATinstaller.
Whenever I try to do either, I get:
"An unexpected error occurred in ATplugininstaller
ATplugininstaller.exe unauthorized access exception
At System.IO._Error.WinIO error()
At System.IO.FileStream..ctor
At System.IO.FileStream..ctor
At System.Xml.XmlTextWriter..ctor
At System.Xml.XmlDOMTextWriter..ctor
At System.Xml.Xmldocument.save
At ATPlugininstaller.Main.AddLayout to cpr()
At ATPlugininstaller.Main.Main ()
As I said
, I get this same message when I try to create a new panel or add any cabs that require the plugin.
However, the panels I already created and the plugins I already installed still work fine.
My question is, why? My manually adding the code into the cpr files to show "day of the week" on the cclock panel is no different than the entries the installer makes when I install a plugin, or create one using Chome editor.
I know, I've looked thru the cpr file content. So, why does the installer crash AFTER I add the code for "day of the week" to the cpr files?
Can someone please help? Thanks.
Moved, nothing to do with development.
Ok then where do I put it? The ATplugininstaller thread IS in this developmen section, so I beg to differ with you.
I put it out here after getting no response to my inquiry in that thread.
This is one responsive board, out of 10 or so inquiries I've posted, I've only received 2 responses, all from from the author of one sw.
This is a real HELPFUL board,, I've got to say.
And, my inquiry, to remind you, HAS to do with development because I'm creating panels in Titanium using xml.
If the particular sw in question is in this section, then my inquiry as to why it crashes deserves to be here.
I guess it doesn't matter, the members on this board are of no help whatsoever. It's a waste of time to even post.
If I sound frustrated, it's because I am. I have no desire to get flamed, but I need help, and no one even answers.
No need to get frustrated .
Your thread does not belong to the development and hacking forum, that foum is please read the rules of D&H here.
Someone can only help you if they know the solution to your problem, no need to blame the users or the forum itself. Posting in the wrong section will not be helpful to you and will add to our work.
And if you really think posting here is a waste of time, why bother posting ?.
I have moved your thread to Q&A forum, which is regularly visited by developers and people with great knowledge in this field, patience is the key; not blaming the users of the board or being sarcastic.
As far as development goes, you are welcome to post your work ( pannels for titanium ) when they are ready, but not questions.
Hope you calm down, and not repeat such bursts of frustration. You could consider this a warnning.
Please read this carefully:
2.3 Flaming: XDA was founded as a group of people sharing information about certain mobile phones. Sharing does not involve virtual yelling (flaming) it does involve working together to solve problems in an environment of mutual respect and understanding. Losing your temper and flaming another member, or group of members, is not acceptable behavior.

I do understand your need for help, but calm down and have patience, try searching or contacting XML writers/developers.
Hope you co-operate.
Understood. I had to do some venting because of all the nonresponses. Can you at least tell me where you moved my post, or did you just delete it? Thank you.
Thank you for your co-operation.
It has been moved to question and answers senction under the general section.
Many people come by here, surely someone will answer; if they have a solution.
madnish30.
just try it with TICS instead of ATPluginInstaller
(link in my signature)
there you don't need a hardcoded .plg and you have the possibility for pre-/postinstall scripts.
Also more definite error message, if you get in trouble.
