The theme and apps sub-forum is getting pretty crowded. Is there any way we could separate it into two sub-forums? One for themes and one for apps?
No, I thinkk, it's just okay so.
I did a few themes and it works fine at XDA.
I wouldn't mind separating them... just my opinion.
It might seem ok now, but as theming gets a little easier, and the wealth of ROMs spread - it is going to get hard to find threads. I agree with having themes and apps separate.

+1 on that
+1 too, at the moment it is fine, but it will get worse overtime as more apps and more themes come out and more nexus one owners arrive
I sorta mentioned this in the cyan thread except I suggested different threads for each major release so it was easier to follow peoples' findings. Even with different sub forums for themes/apps/roms, sifting through 100s of pages to read what others are finding to see if an upgrade is right for you is a very daunting chore.
Any help with sorting though will make the user experience more digestible me thinks
+1 I made a topic about this earlier
more sub-forums, means more threads, more sub-threads under master-threads (for each release as suggested above) create even more threads, more threads create more confusion and more noobs posting "help I can't get root", "my phone lost root after nand restore", "my phone turned into bacon" in more threads and sub-threads then ever, making it even harder to navigate and find answers.
what XDA would really need is a tag cloud
+1 to that as well.
+1 for split.

Unless you can tag specific posts as the starting off point for certain releases (CM5b1 starts at post 25 in thread 1234 vs CM5stable4 starts at post 567 in thread 1234), a tag cloud wouldn't fix one particular issue
My biggest gripe is sifting through a ****ton of pages/posts to find out what people are having problems with to see if an upgrade is worth it or to skip a cycle and see what comes next. No, sub forums will not resolve that gripe but possibly creating a new topic for each major milestone would.
Sub forums however become not required with a tag cloud. I would love the ability to simply click "themes" or "trackball colour" or "cyanogen"...
making sub forums makes it easier to search for stuff....
personally I would like to see a split between discussions about issues and apps for rooted devices from those that are about stock apps / devices. There is a lot of good stuff in the forums for me (non-rooted) but there is (rightly) a lot of discussion about rooting and apps that need root - It would help me if I could filter these out.

OK ive been on this forum for some time. i dont have the many hours that lots of you appear to have to spend modding and adjusting the various XDA type devices covered on here.
My back ground is in electronics and not programing. I like to play with making things like adapters and connection devices. I get frustrated with my in ability to get the electronics to do what i want because it requires the programming side.
I have spent as much time as i can searching and following cross linked threads to find out the things i want to. it is also compounded by the various names and obvious differences between the same models and regions.
I have read the many posts by new people or people like myself who know what they want but dont always get the wording or the area that it is posted in correct. Many of the established members post the usual 'try searching before you post a question' well thats fine but if you dont know what you are looking for then how can you??
So the board has an FAQ section, to be honest that would be the first place i would look for information, there isnt much there to help people, its more about how to post stuff on the board and not FAQ on devices.
Im sure a lot of the new posts would be avoided if the established members/mods set up a list of the FAQ that people ask in there. The obvious ones like what the various terms are, A2DP etc... A list of various patches and what they do, a dload section for drivers, reg editors etc.
Now im wanting to get my XDA2i and Mini s to do what i want, i need to know this info.
Many people will just apply patches etc... i would like to see possibly an area that explains how and why things do what they do to help me understand more so i dont ask those anoying questions that the established members know the answers to.
So how about it MODS/Established members??
The FAQ link is there since we changed the forum to vBulletin, but it's a "default" vBulletin FAQ, not customized to xda-developers in any way.
The place to search for information is the wiki, there you'll find a lot of information on all the devices, and you have the possibility to edit it if you feel there's something missing.
I try to mantain the Hermes wiki up to date, it has a Hermes for Beginners section, a Hermes FAQs section, and a upgrading specific FAQ section.
But even with all the info on the wiki, and sticky posts in all the 3 hermes forums telling people to read the wiki before posting, we are getting the same questions again and again...
Hi all, was wondering if I could enlist your help?
I have an Orange Tytn II and would like some feedback as to what people think is
- the best regeditor
- the best set of useful plugins - including updating to WM6.1
- the best source of skins
for the Tytn II
thank you.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated...

I have an Orange Tytn II and would like to;
- find available plugins which might include - skins and ways to upload, - Change the battery icon to a useful icon of a battery - rather than Orange one
- Change the time that the screen stays on when I'm on a call - so a reg editor
- Maybe upgrade to WM6.1 (without changing Orange menus etc)
Any thoughts would be much appreciated...

All your questions are answered here
And the first topics in first page of the kaiser forum.
I dont want to sound like a ass, but did you look around at all first? All of that is easy to find, well not the upgrade because you will not get that util your service provider comes out with that unless you want a new cooked rom.
Ok..sorry, obviously not clear enough.

NO. Search and read some more before you ask...
Now ya all ganging up on me...
easy isn't it to say "RTFM".... and makes you look so good too...
I bet the Wiki will find you all the answers, and if not, the search will.
But seriously, quoting the post above you, or quoting in a thread with one single topic is almost as annoying...

1) FdcSoft Task Manager
2) You need to Flash your rom to upgrade to 6.1. (so you will lose your orange stuff).
3) Varies on what you like. You will have to search on this, im affraid.
I think it makes you look good too that you don't care enough to do your own legwork. There is more than "hours" of reading here... try DAYS.

Cut through the chaff? Maybe now you can see why there is SOOO much chaff! So yes, it is unreasonable to just start a thread because you don't care to search, try, dig deeper and go for it.
There are skins threads out the butt around here.
A regedit cab? Try PHM RegEdit
Cabs??? What do you call useful? How would WE know what YOU think is useful? There are 1,000's of cabs to install. Are you into photos? Music? GPS? Games? Putty? Contacts? What is it that YOU want?
Find your cabs by searching.... here is a starting point for you:

How many pages shall I find for you? You didn't specify.
If you don't feel like helping yourself, you can start a new thread or reply to this one.
Okay, here is your one free "I'm too lazy to search & read" answer. I personally would've saved it for a "my device is bricked" question, but hey!
I use resco explorer. It is in my opinion the best file explorer & as a bonus it comes with one of the best & friendliest to use registry explorers & editors. Resco also allows you to easily network you computer to your PPC.
I get my full length battery bar, enhcanced scrolling & a much more effective X-button using SPB Pocket Plus. I have deleted the today plug-in portion of the app. so the size is more reasonable. This will also give you multi-tab browsing capability & allow you to use the ok button or X-button to only close one PIE page at a time.
There are tons of theme skins available, but why you would ask about those is beyond me. What's good depends on what you like because they range from plain black to cars to naked women. So, you're on your own there. Start with the "Show us your today screen thread" there are links to tens of thousands of themes there.
Also, get kaiser tweak & the current xml file for it.
WM6.1: If you're not up to flashing yet, you can still add some of the functionality of 6.1 to your stock rom. I suggest getting the PIE6.1 cab file. This will add zoom & overview capability to you current PIE edition. Also take a look at the current Arcsoft 5.0 version. This will add the Voicemail MMS option to MMS text messaging. (as of yet it still won't give you threaded messaging).
A hint for the future. Always search & read first. You can use search, then find a thread & once in the thread there is a search this thread button that will further help you slim down the amount of reading you have to do, it's called "search this thread" & will only return results for the thread you're currently in.
Also use the exclusion feature of advanced search. Highlight the forums that are pertinent to what you're asking. That way you don't get Blue Angel returns for your Kaiser question. I have over three hundred posts. If you look at my posts I don't think I've ever been flamed & I've helped several people with problems even from day one, because maybe I just read an answer that was no help to me, but was exactly what the next guy was looking for. It doesn't pay to be selfish here because everyone has issues, not just you & we've all had to read & work through them. What makes you able to say, hey I deserve an answer without reading (cut through the chaff) when most everyone else has taken the hard path & learned along the way.
Believe me that the reading will pay off in spades. You WILL have MORE problems with your Kaiser. Nature of the beast. I can't tell you how many times I've answered my own question because something I'd read earlier popped back into my mind. Reading will save you time in the long run & helps to keep the boards free of clutter.
That said, good luck with your new Kaiser.
It is just me, or does anyone else receive SPAM email in their personal email accounts?
Hey Grizzz,
Dang man we're opposites! You burn him down then soften the landing, where I like to raise him up then take out the knees! Either way it makes much more sense to do it one of those two ways.
Sure, I know the Noobie needs to have his wrist smacked, but why not do it in a way that ends the thread, like you or I do. Just reprimanding the kiddie does nothing but waste space. So help a Noobie out, take him under your wing & show him how things are done. Don't just reprimand him.
Maybe somew of the +1000 post old timers used to be like us too? Could they have become callus to where they came from? Except of course peep's like cmonex, Jockey, Dutty, Meinyysis, Olipro (I think they were all spawn with a pda in there hand & I heard that Oli's middle name was CE, lol...
You are right. But in the "old" days - AKA Hermes Forum one year ago FLAMING was hard and cruel . A noooob got FLAMED if he had not done his homework - and I find it was actually OK.
I remember reading for DAYS to find out how to FLASH, and IF I had any questions - I asked in a PM or in the specific thread....
I remember a long discussion about having limits for newies so they could not write in the Forum for some time after they joined to make sure they used some time reading before asking the same questions again and again...

Yeah, I remember lurking in Hermes afraid to ask. I once even PM'd Meinyysis & bit my nails for days hoping that the response wouldn't be "Go Die". Not that he'd ever do anything like that, but Hermes forum was brutal at times.
I dont understand why people are hesitating to help instead enjoy having the attitude and reply harsh. If a thread is unnecessary, then the moderator can lock the thread.
This person was looking for some openion. He is not asking how to install something.
1) If you dont want to reply, ignore the post
2) If you care this site and feel the thread is unnecessary, PM mod and ask him to lock the thread
3) To control these kinds of thread and you really get annoyed to answer question which you asked when you were actually a newbee, try to organize this site. Evaluate the members before they join.
One smart person gave the link for search. What an attitude. I am not sure what he is thinking about himself. I seriously hate the attitude of some people here.
MartinH - Please dont feel that all the posts are directed to you.

In newbie's defense...
I haven't asked any questions and I search the threads and wiki's, but I have to say that this forum is not the easiest thing to find anything in because every thread is packed full of non sense that has nothing to do with the topic. The guy simply asked if there was a way to find plugins and such.
Give the guy a break and just send him a link . I wish there was a better search engine on this forum, but there isn't so I continue to read...and read and read...

i have the tytn ii and am very new to it
im looking to put message/alert tones on but dont know where to put them..
ive got a few good alerts that id like to put there....ie. new email/message that sort of stuff
please could someone show me the way to go on
thanks in advance
I am a member of various forums, and mod two with more members than this forum. Here's my thoughts;
This forum is full of useful info, but it's also buried amongst huge piles of crap and spam
1) vBulletin software sucks...try IP.B
2) If you feel the urge to reply, reply with something useful
3) If you feel the thread is a waste of time don't add your spam to it. It makes you look more of an arse than the poster; Martinhdk and we3zy
4) Post counts mean nothing, see point 3)
for the persons who actually added useful info to this thread, then thank you, you know who you are.
To the Mods..I've copy and pasted the useful info, so by all means delete this thread, as no one found it useful but me... and save this forum getting more cluttered.
Please lock/close old threads as this forum has grown immensely in the last three months; it became out of hand. If the thread is dead and if the issues it has are old, they can still be accessed by the search engine, however, they should not take the first page space.
would you like to add this to your pointless threads that take up first page space list?
Maybe you should ask for your thread to be merged with the same type of thread that's on the main page?

Wasnt trying to sound like an A$$ but i believe we leave them open to try to prevent dup threads in the future.. we like it when people actually search!
I am here and I was wondering where I was suppose to post tutorials in the Xoom Section. I was thinking about making some New Xoom User tutorials with screenshots, and if I am to find a good screen recorder app too, some videos, of basic questions as well as operation of the tablet. I would like to make sure I post it in the correct forum before I continue on with it as well as make sure someone has not already done an extensive overview of the actual operations like I am wanting to start here. I hope that I can start this up soon (well I am working on the posts now in word doc, but I am meaning by posting it up...)
Thank you for your time and thank you in advance for the help with this idea

Just a thought...you could post in general...if related to rooting it could be added to diablo2224's. Rooting thread, otherwise create your own. I hope you do some tutorials...do you know what you'd like to cover?
I was thinking about the little small things like "how to get to settings" and "explaining your questions for help" and so on. and then when i get a feel for how people react to them, maybe deeper into programming, rooting troubleshooting, and other stuff
Thanks for the encouragement okantomi! I will keep things updated on my sig and profile page!!

I think that "how to get to settings" is a little basic, but I definitely think we need more tutorials on how to make the most of the Xoom (and Honeycomb in general) so have at it.
If you make videos "how to"s, I would create a single post in General and post links to all of them there. If they are just written guides, I would make a new post in General for each one.

I was thinking about making on big tutorial in on general location for all the links, kind of like the index of a book, and then you click the link and it goes to the forum post about that said link. I might have to do this on another page like a personal website but i really do not want to do that so i am looking into alternative ways. I was thinking too about making the videos a playlist and use youtube and maybe add a few Here's why and commentaries to the list. I have a whole list of ideas and I am hoping to get started (as in posting it up) soon! cause i use google docs, I can write on my phone when away and have an idea... so this should be interesting Also looking into screen recording material for ON the Xoom cause i do not want to be doing DDMS all the time for ever single frame that i need... if i had a video recorder it would be nicer ... but i will get to that when i cross that bridge! I will keep everyone updated on the tutorials when they get posted... I will if it suits people, us this as a "to go" point and just change the title, or make a new thread for the index.... Here we GO!
also! thank you for the words of encouragement and advice rschenck!

If you wish to see an example of one approach to this sort of idea, we have been building a community wiki for CyanogenMod 7 on the SGS and created a How To section. Of course this is a group effort as opposed to a single member, but the idea is much the same.

awesome to hear onn the cyanogen mod but I want to keep it as close to stock as possible... like right now I have super user but I have not changed the rom at all I'll look at the how to that you linked me to and I will study it and see what advice to writing a tutorial it will give me :-D
Keep you updated and thanks again!
All day today I have had an issue with Searches. I keep getting told it is temp unavailable.
Yet, when I go to Samsung S3 forums and click the links (such as General or Q&A sections they work just fine - my understanding of how forums work is those links are just Pre-set Searches.
I've changed nothing on my PC in weeks, but nobody else seems to be complaining about a problem and I noticed it this morning and it is now 6:30PM.
Is there an issue or is it me in some way?

Your understanding is incorrect. When you click a link, that takes you to a pre-defined place within the forum - as you can see from the forumdisplay.php?f= info.
The search feature goes up and down like a whore's drawers. Not really a problem - you can just use Google to carry out a site specific search if you need something. That's what I do most of the time anyway as I find it to be more accurate (not just for XDA, for for most web forums out there)
I have the same problem on my tapatalk so dont know if it is connected- i keep getting temporary unavailable for sewrch and for my previous oosts where im participating? What is up with that?
Simon i really dont understand ur answer to this question?

The search feature often goes down - that is just life. When it does it affects other features as well, such as the "Participated threads" and "User's posts".
It affects the web-site, TapaTalk and XDA App at the same time and usually comes back up after a day or so - no big deal.
You can use Google if you need to search the XDA forums. Simply put "site:forum.xda-developers.com" before the text you want to search for and it will search XDA only.
Thanks for the explanation Simon. My thinking was that, when you click on (say) S3 Q&A link, the Search had to run to find and sort the threads into presentation order. To be able to take one to that forum without running a Search would seem to me to require every forum to be in its own database - that would seem remarkably inefficient in terms of server use. I just presumed all posts would be in a single DB (or maybe one for each sub-forum choice at top level, and indexed for efficiency.
Maybe I should set up a forum so I can learn how they work...
At any rate, it is working again now...

Different forum software works differently, but most of them keep the forum number in the database in the post's record, so a SELECT on that forum number returns a recordset of all posts in that forum. (The LIMIT clause limits the dataset to the posts you see - the first 10, 26-50, whatever.)
An efficient database can search a recordset of a few million records, with the database equivalent of a Search (a WHERE clause), in a second. The efficiency is determined by the code (which is usually pretty good these days) and the database (and MySQL, the one most commonly used on the web, is pretty efficient).
Search, OTOH, has additional code to "front end" the database with whatever random search criteria you set, so it's actually less efficient.
