Wizard ROM Recommendation Question - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario ROM Development

What WM6 ROM would provide me with the closest thing to the original MS WM6 ROM? I'd like to take it and add in some of the carrier software provided by T-Mobile (my service provider) in the MDA WM5 update. Essentially providing what would have been an unofficlal standard WM6 update to the MDA with T-Mobile customizations. Plus my own standard items thrown in as well.
Any recommendations on where to start?

The best way to find out which WM6 is best for you is to just read the first post of each version in this thread. The "chefs" explain exactly what's in theirs. Plus, you can always just try each one out and see what works best for you.

ROM comparison

Hello people,
I have just purchased the T-Mobile MDA Compact (Magician) on German and I have been visiting these forums for some time now to see if I can get english language. I have noticed that there are many different english ROMs out there depending on who is selling the device (I-Mate, Q-Tek, T-Mobile).
What are the main differences between these ROMs? Mainly I am interested in the following:
1. Is the phone functionality the same for all ROMs? (same quality of voice, ring-tone selection, dialing and SMS interface)
2. If they are different, what ROM would you recommend?
3. Would placing the new ROM lock the phone to a network (I have unlocked version)? (T-Mobile ROM to T-Mobile network)
4. Are other pocketpc features the same for all ROMs (Bluetooth functionality, battery usage, memory usage)?
Thank you.
High i recently got my magician, it was already unlocked (it is branded t-mobile mda) i used t-mobile latest rom and phone was still unlocked (i am with o2 ukl). using this forum i upgraded to the 1.13rom,1.13radio rom and bigstorage. there is a guide on how to do this on this forum. the guide has all the links you need to get the roms and all the software you need to do the upgrade. since i have done the upgrade i have had absolutly no problems and have encountered no problems with the added software i use. battery performance etc is no different to before as i have always found it to be good. hope this is of some help to you
here is a link for you on this topic : http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=32274&highlight=1+13+rom+storage
Hi, thanks for the reply but the link you've posted is for how to install the ROM. I have no problems with that, I am just wandering about the differences between various 1.13 ROMs out there.
Thanks.

The main differences between differently branded ROMs is the Extended ROM, ie the additional software bundled with the ROM. However by large the software included with each ROM is essentially the same, just branded with different things.
1: Yes
2: Well... they're all really the same! I use the T-Mobile ROM since its the 1.13 I'm most accustomed to BigStoraging (I have a guide on that ).
3: No. No ROMs on this site lock your phone to a specific provider, even the branded ones. Heck, I don't think there are ROMs which implement locks on the phone, but stick with the ones here on the FTP in case!
4. Yes, all the core Windows Mobile functions are exactly the same.

Definitions, please?

Hi All:
I would appreciate some help and explanation on the following items. Once answered, I'd be happy to write up a summary that could be used as a "sticky" to help other newcomers!
1. As I understand it, "Cheetah" is the internal code name for the Treo 750, and it was manufactured by HTC (High Tech Computer)?
2. It seems that there is a way to upgrade the Windows version on my 750? It currently has v5.0 (OS 5.1.195 Build 14959.2.3.2). Is there any particular benefit, other than being current) why I should upgrade Windows? Any potential problems?
3. Hermes is the internal code name for devices made by HTC, but NOT for any Treo devices?
4. How does Hermes SPL relate to Treo 750? And what does SPL mean?
5. What is "Hard-SPL"?
6. I've seen references on this forum to some sort of "radio upgrade" or "radio mod" for the 750. What is it, and why do I need/want it?!
7. What is a "cooked" ROM?
8. If I either upgrade Windows, or replace the firmware with a modified one, can I permanently damage (i.e. "brick") my 750?
I know, many questions!
But I am an intelligent techie-type, and yet I feel like I've just walked in on the middle of a foreign-language film with no subtitles!
Thanks

Hi there. I have been using a Treo 750 for about 18 months. While I have not "played" with the ROM on my device to the same extent that others have here, I will answer what I can.

Correct. HTC have made many Windows Mobile devices and the Palm Treo 750 is but one of them. I'd have to say in my experience, having owned and used other HTC devices such as the O2 Xda II mini, i-mate JAMin and i-mate JASJam, the Treo 750 beats the others hands down in both hardware design and software implementation.

Yes indeed! My device shipped with Windows Mobile 5. I upgraded to WM6 when it was released late last year and can say that it offers some very good improvements over WM5.
One of the issues the upgrade did was provide a much more stable radio ROM - phone operation was much improved in my experience, e.g. no more dropped calls, especially when answering a call. There were also some helpful software improvements such as the in-call buttons for speakerphone and mute, etc.
Note that Palm have just removed all WM6 upgrade ROMs from their websites (in the last week). Hopefully you will still be able to find a ROM somewhere on the 'net.

I don't think so. AFAIK the Hermes is HTC's TyTN device.

Sorry, don't know about that. I have seen it mentioned here too but don't know what it means. I have a feeling it is something to do with unlocking a phone from a specific carrier.

Again sorry, I don't know. There are cooked versions of WM6.1 floating around here for the Treo 750. Palm never released a WM6.1 upgrade for the Treo 750 (although it comes as default on the new Treo Pro) and I have seen references to radio ROM upgrades/downgrades in relation to this cooked ROM. I'd avoid it.

This is a ROM that someone has put together themselves. They disassemle a commerical ROM for a specific device, remove and add components, and then re-assemble and release it to other users. Use these at your own risk!

It's certainly a risk with any modified ROM and has not been something I was ever keen to do. Note that ROMs are device specific so don't try to use one for another device on your Treo. I've found the commercially released ROMs to be reliable and work just fine.
Hope all of this helps.

Wm6.5 original ?

I'd like to try wm6.5 original...somebody has this rom ? I tried a lot of roms but dont work well in based 6.5 ...some phone numbers cant be called , etc Maybe original rom wm 6.5 is good ...Thanks !
there's no WM6.5 original since 6.5 isn't released yet, plus there will neveer be 6.5 for Kaiser official.
The problems you have aren't connected to 6.5 but maybe old radio I guess.
all the rooms are beta versions of wm 6.5. offical final release will be october 2009 but we dont expect offical release for kaiser.
try flashing a different radio version

you should have emailed htc support instead of starting a new thread for this. please read rules about starting new threads.
Where do you live? Who is your service provider? Ah wait, it doesnt matter! Kaiser is too old for them to release an official version anyways...
I thought HTC said they will have an official 6.5 upgrade for any device 400Mhz and above. However, no providers will have an offical upgrade... But technically its the same, because you can just flash the roms found here... They are usually faster than original...
i noticed that htc provided a Hotfix to enhance the security mechanism of Bluetooth service which is dated 2009-07-31 so maybe, just maybe they still might be remembering that the kaiser exists and might provide a wm6.5 rom update

HTC doesn't have to license a hot fix from M$. HTC is not about to spend their profits or R&D money licensing software for a phone they don't sell or even make anymore. No chance, no way. Besides, do you really think that Microsoft's 6.5 will be anything more than a waste of time or money ?
Will it run better than the 6.5' s we currently have in this forum ? Will it have more customization options ? Will it have more pre-installed apps ? Will it come with more support ?
No.....no....no.....and no ! So what's the point ?
In the US, AT&T does not see Tilt anymore! Not even refurbished ones...so if they dont sell it, then no updates...
denco: If HTC or AT&T would make 6.5 for kaiser, we would have new nk.exe for 6.5 . Plus new optimized apps directly for Kaiser. But that would be the only thing that would be better from original first.

But again, that would be like Skoda Auto coming out with a brand new set of performance tires, for a car they do not even make anymore.

i wish there was some way to modify the nk.exe for 6.5 from other devices which already have it for our kaiser, then there would be no need to recmod and we would also have additional space for more modules

Ok it is my understanding that you have recmod to not to use up slot 0...so I think you will have to recmod no matter what...

this is what i've read...
"WM 6.5 NK allows you to use more modules without taking up SLOT 0 space, so allows more flexibility to use modules (which are faster to load)"

Yup in theory it sounds wonderful, but I dont think it makes a difference in reality. I do have a touch pro 2, which is the same WM sluggish one!
I came back to STOCK wm 6.1 work perfect...IGO 8 and radio , but on this forum are many fancy people....Thanks them !

Umm, or like Apple releasing new firmware for the original iPhone, which they don't make anymore... wait a minute.
Microsoft needs to break free of allowing releases of their mobile OS to be dictated by the device OEMs. It's a terrible practice and one of the reasons their market share in the mobile device sector is shrinking.

And if M$ only sold ONE phone " the Kaiser " in different variants I am sure they would release 6.5 for it.
WM 6.5 RTM's about two months ago and if you look at Josh koss thread he has a link in his sig that has the official 6.5 RTM release(21234) from MS. However there will be no RTM build for the Kaiser from HTC, but Josh's works fine. This 21234 build was the RTM build that is in the developer toolkit, and will be the build that all companies will use to create there 6.5 official releases.
As for the current 6.5 builds that everyone has those are the beta builds for 6.5.1 that will be released for the first capacitive screens, and be the "basic" WM6.5 that will ship on lower end phones not capable of running WM7.

Sprint 6.5 ROM

in another thread titled "How to Flash Treo Pro," a poster wrote,
"Sprint has an official CDMA 6.5 ROM for the Palm Treo Pro, only if there was a GSM 6.5 ROM that was stable for the Palm Treo Pro.
I won't upgrade my Palm Treo Pro to 6.5 because I can see so many issues on the forum's and I cannot find a stock english 6.1 GSM ROM.
On the other hand, the O2 Atom was very easy to upgrade, and very stable."
Can someone verify this and, if so, show me how to obtain it?
Thanks,
quicknight

well that was me that made the statement, I hardspl my Treo Pro and tried all the 6.5 roms, there is really no benefit going to 6.5, slower and has annoying bugs... the only rom I did like was Heechee's Naked, but... all these roms have bugs with MarketPlace and Windows Live which I use.. so I reverted back to the stock 6.1 rom, and Marketplace and latest Windows Live works perfectly...
On the other hand, the O2 Atom Life made a huge difference in upgrading to 6.5, faster response, better battery life.. no bugs.. better UI experience...
On the Treo Pro it aint worth it... don't bother until there is a stable rom out...

thanks for the reply. I don't really use Marketplace or windows live (bing?) so that wouldn't really bother me. So, then, is the O2 Atom Life the "official Sprint ROM?"

No, both my windows mobile phones are GSM, the O2 Atom is not official rom, the last official rom for the O2 Atom Life was WM6.
The O2 Atom Life uses a rom created by bajok he is on the forums here...

[Q] Touch Pro 5.2 upgrade

Hello,
I have HTC Touch pro that i got from my sister in Australia (3). The phone has:
os 5.2.21916
I am using this in Canada on Fido.
Now the question I have is:
- Is there any official upgrade i can do to this phone? WM 6, 6.1, 6.5??
- As you see I am using a Australian phone in Canada.. I dont really need data. I do use WiFi.. What would be a good ROM for the following criteria:
- FAST
- Bug Free
- Do not care as much for a lot of apps except MS office
- Will be installing Garmin XT
I am a total noob to this whole ROM thingi.. Please help...
no 6.5 official roms exist, official 6.1 and below exist. you can install garmin on any version. NATF (not a treo fan) used to make v. good roms, some versions include stripped down roms for max performance.
some people complain that the sense interface slows down that phone, so check and if you don't like it, you can disable it.
double post, plz delete.
Thanks for the reply..
So I guess the next question is how do I get the official 6.1 ROM (not a cooked one) for this phone.
I checked the HTC site but they don't have anything that I can find....I tried the HTC australia site and the last release is:2008-12-04
From the HTC www site I see there is: 2009-08-30
htc.com/www/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=140&act=sd&cat=2
Can someone confirm that i can put this on my phone which has OS5.1 currently?
Sorry for spammin.. but I guess my confusion is from the fact that..
After I installed the ENERGY 6.5 ROM, the Settings>about tells me that OS is 6.5
but when i do settings>Phone info>SW info: It says Os version is: 5.2.21916
So I guess the question is how do I updated my phone's base OS to 6.1
You should do a little more research before posting
I'm not trying to be rude, but you're going to run people down really quick with this line of questioning. Most of the answers to your questions could be answered by just reading more threads, maybe even a little wikipedia. I'll give you one hint: your phone does not have (nor did it ever have) Windows Mobile 5, and there is no such thing as WinMo 5.1 or 5.2. Unless your sister installed a new ROM, you've got Windows Mobile 6.1.
Now, go back and do some more research and decide for yourself: what ROM do you want to install? Is there a reason you don't want a cooked ROM? (is it because you believe that the "official" ROMs somehow are better?)
Good luck!
You can test what rom you like by flashing different ones rather than ask "what rom is the best?" I have no idea what your tastes are. It doesn't hurt to flash different roms as long as you back up your data
In my opinion, the custom roms blow away official roms in terms of performance and cosmetics. (All my opinion, you choose for yourself)
