I have a BackUp of the T-Mobile Wing - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario ROM Development

What can I do to get the backup from my wing onto my MDA. I have performed this backup using SPB BackUp. I am thinking I can just restore it straight to my MDA that is running "Taking you to the Limit" Rom. What ya think. Or is there a way to exstract the rom for the MDA. I am willing to share.....

It doesn't quite work like that. You can back up contacts and documents, but you won't get any of the system files on it and the registry would be a mess.

Can we just copy the files using file explorer.

Hahaha this thread is funny. I wish it was that easy to creat backups.

hahaha yup!!!!!!! if it was that easy, why would we need kitchens!!!!!

Don't be such a small ass. I guess your the one that built the kitchens too. Backups do include some system files. Maybe not on the rom but on computers.

Not being a smartazz. This is just the truth. No hurt in asking though as we all wrestled with these ideas as newbs. The kitchens are the only way to go in terms of getting new system files into your ROM.
Seriously, stick around and learn more, rlonnborg. You may learn enough to get very good and indeed build your own kitchen.

Couple of Questions before I flash

Hi guys,
I'm finally getting around to flashing my stock Vario III after loads of hemming and hawing, but before I do; I have a question or two for you.
1) If I go to WM6.1, can I use my Sprite Backup files to restore my installed apps? I've heard I can't, but would like to confirm.
2) As there are so many ROMs to choose from, are there any for WM6.1 that are as close as possibly to the official T-Mobile ROM my phone shipped with? My primary requirement in a new ROM is stability and usability, but I'd like it to be as fast as possible too.
3) Which pagepool size renders the best performance?
My thanks to those that may answer, and a big wet raspberry to anyone that tell me to search the forum! (I did!)

1. No. Only if you use the same rom. Use UC to install your apps. Its real easy.
2. Cant tell you that. It's a personal preference thing. Only you can answer that.
3. I like 18.
Thanks. I know 2 is mainly a personal preference thing, but I'd rather find one that's as similar to the shipped rom as I can, without all the extra trimmings that people add. Hence I was asking if there were any like that, beyond that NoFrills one.
Oh, BTW.. What's UC? Could you expand the abbreviation please?

UC us User Customization. It was developed on this site to allow people to 1-tap install all of their applications after flashing a new ROM. It works the same way as carrier customization after a hard reset.
The NoThrills ROM floating around here is quite good for someone looking for a very basic ROM so there are no unused/wasted applications on your phone. Until the Apr 09 Dutty ROM came around, I was running NoThrills since the day it came out, and was very satisfied with it.

P1Tater, i so agree to that ... I have flashed so many roms since i have joined xda that my wife is at the brink of taking my phone away from me... lol :-D.
But to be honest FloatingFatMan it really is dependent on your taste for me i can't get away from Dutty's roms as they are very nicely put together (although am patiently waiting for final release of xda live 2.0). And if you don't like the rom you flash just go back to the oem (should be able to find it around here, i got my att oem rom from here just in case i need.

I have my hesitations for flashing too... it looks too complicated, at least the first time. So far, I have not tried... using Vista makes it look very difficult too.
Any specific tips here? BTW, as far as searching the forum is concerned, I have read them all... almost

I really do think the Wiki's and FAQ's have a lot to offer. That is how I learned to flash and customize. It seems like the hardest part(insert joke) is the first time set up stuff like Hard SPL, Jump SPL, etc. But after that you start to tweak your device more, it gets easier. Sprinkle in a little UC(User Customizations) and then your hooked. You'll start looking for and trying any and every ROM out there. I know people get annoyed when all of us say to read but it's the only way to learn and understand the stuff. It's all laid out for you, you just have to use it and soak it all in. And if you have really read and made an honest effort to learn on your own(and we can tell) lots of people here are more than willing to help, we've all been there. It's just when we read all the redundant questions that have already been answered that some get their blow torches out.

no doubt, after all the tytn II is an expensive toy and u would have a hard time justifying it to urself if u bricked it on ur first atempt. but honestly its fairly ez first u need to get hardspl and after that flash any rom for kaiser u like. i have xp so not sure about issues w/vista but if u pm me i can tell u how i did it and hopefully that will help.
also read the first sticky, everything in it, in the Kaiser rom development form it should clear up alot of hesitations.
p.s. can't include links to threads as i am at work on my tilt

hey buddy, honestly there is nothing hard about flashing with vista, just to be safe i downloaded everything to make my comp more like xp, but i used a friends and only installed WMDC, winrar, and the ROM. i love flashing and so long as you have HardSPL on your kaiser then everything will go just fine. any questions feel free to pm me and i'll do my best to answer within an hour, i basically live on this site

Oh I've flashed my old Magician a few times... I'm not the slightest bit worried about bricking my devices either. I've read everything and am pretty confident.
No, my reason for hesitation is that I'm basically a lazy bugger and the thought of reinstalling all my apps is irritating. Besides.. With so many ROMs, it's hard to choose the one I want!
@futbolkeeper, thesire and tubaking182,
Thank you very much for the advice and support, appreciated. My idea of first-time flashing is:
Step 1. HardSPL (after data backup)
Step 2. Flash new ROM
Step 3. Flash new Radio.
Step 4. Restore data
Step 5. Install any new apps, if necessary...
Am I right here? I may do this in a short while!
ahahah.
I would be a trifle peery of your 4th bullet. You do not mean to restore data from a preexisting backup, do you? Even if you partially succeed, you can make one big mess of your "new" Kaiser. Nothing an HR could not put straight, but that defeats the purpose of restoring data in the first place, now doesn't it. (and yes, I went through that myself. Lost an hour or so for exactly zero gain)
If, however, you only mean things that PIM Backup can store, go ahead by all means! Contacts, agenda, tasks, texts - NP here.
And yes, you will end up (re)installing extra apps - if only because no-one but you can judge what is key for you. And because if you use your Kaiser as a gaming platform or a mobile library, no-one has quite the same taste as you.
Ah, and yes, your suggested order is quite correct
Thank you wyrm. That's absolutely clear, and by 'restore data' I meant PIM backup, so no problems here.
As I am typing this, I have already done the first three steps above, everything is perfect and am restoring with PIMbackup now... It has been a great experience, and am very excited...
EDIT: PIM data restored and all's well. Hope all my previous programs work well with this ROM too.
BTW, This ROM (Dutty's WM6.1_5.2.19700_Hybrid_V2) has a radio also inbuilt, so step 3 was redundant
Entire process took about 20 minutes flat...
I've flash so many times already, reading all about ROMs out there really convincing. So I flash and flashed on my Hermes, HP and Kaiser then only realize bugs one after another. No big deal. And it's not going to stop too.

ALWAYS HARD RESET AFTER YOU FLASH!!
i know it seems like a waste of time but you need to do it in order to make sure that everything from the last ROM is deleted

Best way to Cook?

Hi all,
Well, it's been a very long process, but I've finally learned enough to start cooking a ROM. But, before I begin, I would like to ask all of you what you believe is the best way to cook. I've heard about cooking in Linux, using Kaiserkitchen, Hypercore Kitchen, and just dumping and rebuilding.
What's the best in terms of relative easiness (it can be harder than kaiserkitchen), and freedom?
thanks and I look forward to the responses (if any) I will get
If you have Linux, then you can use pof's kitchen. I personally like the Kaiserkitchen, i add what want, delete things i don't need in the dump, etc. It will give you some troubles at times though;I spent hours one day trying to get my kitchen back and it stressed me out, however the outcome is well worth it

yes, that's what I use right now, but I think I am looking for something more robust
has anyone successfully tried using hypercore for the kaiser? it looks very promising

Core needs the .bat files updated and I am not sure if it uses the New IMGFS tools that work with the kaiser? It would be nice to see that kitchen updated since i was a great tool back in the days. I wouldn't mind helping someone getting the core kitchen to work with the Kaiser
I only use IMGFS tools to cook no kitchens I find its easier to keep track of the files you have replaced and what not. But to each there own as long as it all comes out ok
I like using kaiserDump, just search Google for it.
it uses imgfs, and I find it pretty easy and useful to use
sorry for this random post here guys, but does anyone have the entire kaiserkitchen in one .zip file? The reason is that I am having some difficulty getting the individual .zip files to work.
thanks

Leftover .dsm files

First of all, I want to thank all the XDA contributors. Y'all make some great guides and tools. I hope to join the ranks some day.
Some background, then the question. So I've cooked a couple roms based of the ATT 3.57.502.2 ROM, extracted the OEM/SYS/XIP folders, made a couple of my own packages (from cabs + registry edits), and built a splash.nb. I'm using Kaiser Kitchen v0.3, but I do not use the 'kitchen' per say. I am a big believer in that a tool is only as good as your understand of it. If you are using a tool and the only thing you know is 'I input x and I get back y', you haven't learned anything. That being said, I've steered away from all the .bat files included in the kitchen.
Now the question: When I use PKGTool on the dump folder I get the SYS and OEM folders as expected, but I also get six .dsm files too. They seem to reference a "OEM_UpdateCert" and a "PackageGSM". What are they, and what should I do with these .dsm files? I just ignored them on my first batch of roms.
I'm pretty sure you can just delete those if you've already made packages
Yeah that's what I'm thinking (my other roms work fine), I was just wondering if anyone knew their purpose.

I don't know "their purpose", but I always get rid of any leftovers like that.
Tools are tools, they never replace human's thinking, so you gotta help them after they done their job

Is there a cab to move the lock-slider to the bottom of the screen?

Hi Guys,
I've been using this phone for about a month now and it truly is one of the best devices I've ever had! I've tweaked and modified it to perfection but, as the title of this thread suggests, the final thing I was hoping for was a way to move the lock-slider to the bottom of the screen when locking/unlocking the phone to make it more finger/hand friendly.
Before I get flamed, I have searched and am looking at this thread at the moment:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=535024
as well as others, but am a little confused as to the correct app to use (if there is one) specific for the HD2. If there is, I would really appreciate a link to it. Alternatively, if there isn't one, I'll live!
Thanks in advance

(we may be waiting some time i think lol) to be honest i think i read somewhere before installing it to back up original files, but i havent got a clue how to backup or replace windows files. i did start a thread on the topaz forum asking how to put files/replace files in the windows directory, and backup files and stuff. but no-one answered it lol. think its a bit trivial to alot of the people who post on here, as its 2nd nature to them. they must of seen my thread and shook there head at me lmao. i did try the search but alls that would bring up was things related to what files to replace in the windows folder for various things, not how to. i DO know to use total commander or resco explorer LMAO thats about it. maybe doing a computer course in on the horizon! I use SPB backup. Installed this after my first and only (so far) hard reset. It creates a back up in a .exe form so if your phone crashes and must be hard reset you can simply click the file and it will restore your phone (theoretically - I haven't had as of the time of this posting) This doesn't help your current predicament but maybe a hard reset will get you back to normal. Not sure though.

Well try Sprite Backup (http://www.spritesoftware.com/products/sprite-backup/full-edition). It backs up all settings, emails, texts, contacts, everything by all accounts. I have a Sprite Backup from before I installed the new cab anyway so, if worst comes to worst, I'll try that but to be honest, I re-installed heartwolf's cab again and I'm happy with the slider at the bottom of the screen anyway so I'm fine.
henv (the poster of the cab in this thread) should really edit his post to reflect that the original slider would be removed but, as I say, I personally don't really mind....
As above I got excited seeing the cab and downloaded it. Disliking it so much I have now done a hard reset which has returned everything to normal.
