Rom Cooking - Need Help - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario ROM Development

Im trying to Cook in some .exe's into my rom for AIM, Opera, and Resco File Explorer.
Ive managed to Cook in Live Search, Today Agenda, PIM Backup, and Start Clean successfully, but these other 3 Programs just wont take. Everytime i try to build the OS, it the BuildImgfs.exe ends with an error.
Any help or suggestions that you have would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, and since you are asking that, you need to be careful that you don't mess up your phone...
On Molski.biz there is a tutorial on how to do packages. Also in the Faria Kitchen thread (stickied at the top) there is a PDF you can download. Packages are the same for all kitchens in how you make them and the rules about them.
Also, since you are talking about Opera, thats a pretty big install, so you may find thats about the only thing you can add to your rom (if you can even get that in there, as I think its like 6meg). Remember your rom size has to come in around 57meg total. Anything more than that will not flash / fit on your phone.

Yea... i read, and re-read, and just now, re-read again .. it says nothing about needing/using packages..
i think i should try recompressing the large .exe's

I secound that, i tried and it is hard to get it in there!!! you have to dump alot of stuff, and in the end i did not think it was worth it!!! I have been able to get TOMTOM in which is set at 3.62Mb.
I have been able to get around 8mb in to the rom fully dumped and about 6.72Mb partly dumped!
It is possable but you have to look at what do you want to lose!

No you do not need package for that rom packer, as it is not a kitchen, if you have not done alot of rom cooking i would say use a kitchen, faria is good and easy to use. You will find alot of poeple with what you are wanting!

i didnt think that i needed packages.. i guess i know what im doing after all. the file is obviously too big to fit into the ROM..
Time to pull out all the other stuff that i dont use.
how do other chefs manage to put so much into their roms?

Help with cooking with core kitchen

Well hardly cooking... All I want to be able to do is to take a base ROM that I like (core 2.0n vanilla or perhaps mfrazz's 1.7) and add the programs that I always install anyway. i figure this will make a hard reset easier if needed and give me a little more memory.
Okay... so I downloaded anchillius's rom kitchen and was able to follow all the directions he provided. I used his core 2.0n, which I have been running for a while but unless I am mistaken installing what I produced would basically be the same thing as installing it directly since it is vanilla anyway, right?
anyway I have a few questions...
1. If I dump a ROM like mfrazz's crossbow 1.7 and install that as is, will the reg tweaks that he made still be there?
2. Is there a readily available step by step on how to add programs. I tried google search and couldn't find anything. I know I am being lazy here but hoping that someone will help a brotha out! that and I am really quite busy at work (but not to busy to not be messing with my phone!)
I'm pretty sure that all the reg changes are the same, I cooked Crossbow 1.7 a little, and nothing changed (that I noticed).
And when u say programs, do u mean by cooking the programs into the ROM with cabs, cuz in this tutorial there is a way on how to install programs by cabs
P.S. While were talking about programs, how do I get the settings for a programs that have to register into a package of my cooked ROM? Is it something in the reg entries on my phone? If so, how do I find out what and how do I get it off of my phone and into the package?

It worked for me - but I cannot guarantee that you don't brick your Touch.
So be warned.
Thanks to dsixda for updating the Wiki for Elfin

Can I dump my touch with all installed programs, cooking a complete rom including installed programs?
No - that's not possible I Think.
But you can use sprite backup.
It worked perfectly for me when I flashed the ROM back.
But keep in mind that it only will work correctly on the same language of the ROMs.

I have Sprite Backup, but after flashing the device with the same rom, the restore didn't work, so I had to install the programs again.

Here is a trick I have used for quite some times with Sprite Backup 5.1
Sprite Backup version 5.1, version 6.02 is more fancy, 5.1 is good enough.
1. Do a full backup, make sure option Create Self Extract Exec
2. Hard reset (optional)
3. Flash new ROM
4. Run the backup file, make sure the Upgrade Mode Restore Option is Check.
5. Kneel down and pray (optional, or take a cup of coffee).
SKtools is handy.
Step 4 is most important. When it asks you for the upgrade fine, Click None. Minor cleanup unavoidable but heck a lot better than of re-install all the softwares.
Sometimes you may find the machine run slugglish by doing that. I am not sure why.
You may flash the new ROM, re-install all the softwares, see if the machine run faster, but few days later, you will feel it run slugglish. I am not sure why. (The laptop runs runs much faster than once I bought it and take it home and installed with applications.)
So I just keep buying new machines... hahaha
holy moly.
going great at 10% of flashing.
but i feel confident the tute was on the spot.
muchos gracias.
And yes you are right (you didn't say it but you must have thought it), I could have added it myself to WIKI. But just had to try it myself first off course.
And am i right in believing i could have allready replaced some of the graphical files in the dumped "ROM" directory?
Or is it to dangerous at this change because the file size needs to fit?
92%
100%,... first boot screen passed........second boot screen passed....
The audience is in Awe. It works.
Next step, getting familiar with hypercore kitchen.
Thanks for this tutorial.
Now i can safely backup my Dutch rom and test some custom ****..

Schmia

Do NOT change files in the dump directory without proper tools!!!
You will mess up the ROM
When you have a look at the dump directory there are some info files with data for the places in the ROM which need to be recalculated.

Dumping Elf WM6 Italian version ROM
Before trying to put new Rom images, i would like to backup the original one.
I followed the (simply) tutorial, but i'm confused about this step:
"need the ruu_signed.nbh from valid update (extract with winrar)"
Which file do I need?
I don't understand why I need a valid ROM when I'm trying to dump a Rom from my Elf
Can I use an other language ROM version (English, Dutch....) or is needed only an Italian one?
Thx in adv and sorry for my poor english

you need this as a "shell" or "template" because the .nbh files are made in a way that cannot be recontructed (so far I understand - correct me if I'm wrong).
And yes you can use an ROM with another language. I took the Australian ROM - look at the first paragraph "files you need"
This is usually a .exe file that you can extract with winrar (or winzip maybe)
P.S.: your english is not so bad

All worked fine, flashing the "new" dumped rom worked perfectly, I'll put it on FTP to make it avaiable to other users.

Don't upload to XDA. I've seen some directories with full roms on FTP. But this is no longer allowed and files will be deleted.
XDA's allready been in trouble with MS about this. So either use third party file sharing or privatly owned FTP.
r0p3..
So to get the radio and SPL do i need to redo first extraction but then for these files? Or are these IPL/SPL?

I don't know yet - I still have to dig in the wiki about that.
It's very dangerous in this area - if you mess up IPL or SPL your baby is usually lost forever. I don't mind about those as long pof's USPL works beautiful.
Radio might be not so critical. But 2.97. is already available - so it would only be for the fun of it

Dopod and re-flashing help please!!

Hi, I have 3 questions:
1) I've looked around a lot, but can't seem to catch hold of a chinese language for my vox...Its called Dopod rom right?? Where can I get the files and instructions??
2) Does a ROM (when dumped) contain absolutely everything that is on the phone and if flashed on another phone will be a "duplicate" of original phone??
3) I've found the wiki on how to dump my rom, but how would I be able to re-flash it onto another phone??
Thanks guys
Wow somebody who actually read the Wiki before posting - nice
1.It's on the ftp. But look at the stuff that is written in the Wiki, about no Wifi and so on.
2.Nope it isn't it's only the operating system and all the software that comes with it! So no contacts or appointments or other files you put on. When you do a hard reset, you would see what all comes with the ROM! (but don't do it, it'll wipe all your data)!
3.You would have to put it into the kitchen and try to cook a new ROM out of the dump, but look around on the ftp first, there are a lot of shipped ROMs, yours is probably there too!
I can't seem to locate the Dopod wiki... But are there ANY ROMs that can handle chinese text without sacrificing the wifi function??
In terms of the shipped ROMs folder - I couldnt find my one and besides, I'd like to have one with all my programs on. So where can I find easy to follow (I'm a newbie on all this) instructions on cooking and creating a ROM??
(Is this thread the right one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=337066 ) ???
Thanks for your help

search core kitchen, also hypercore, also, you must know that there is dificulties pulling a rom appart, and then having it be put into packages. better off cooking your own. If you download every wizard kitchen you can find, you will have quite a bit to start with when it comes to OEM drivers. If you download kitchens flr other devices, You will also get new apps to put into the oem.
Trying to pull appart a rom will give you more trouble.
look up TNT's kitchen, and j.vd.spank's kitchen.
Cooking your own is better than cracking the egg and trying to cram something in there.

Removing Sprint ROM-installed software

hi,
Did a search for the topic, found lots of threads about cooked or custom ROMs but nothing about uninstalling all the junk in the ROM that I don't want that came pre-installed on the device.
Any links to actual threads that talk about how to do it would be greatly appreciated.
Not looking for a cooked ROM, am fine with the stock Sprint ROM, just want to delete all the extraneous applications that came pre-installed.
Thank you in advance.
If it isn't listed in the remove programs section there is a good chance it is a part of the rom and isn't removable.
See, someone had something for the AT&T version

Unfortunately, they didn't port it for the Sprint and was hoping to find something similiar, and yes, there IS a way to remove stuff from ROM, just trying to find out how.
If you're trying to remove software like NFL Mobile and stuff, this is the way to do it:
- You have to dump stock Sprint ROM into a kitchen
- Search for *.cab files in the OEM folder. When you find some, those will be the only ones that you can remove. All others are mixed into the ROM files and MUCH tougher to remove. Remove the ones you don't want
- Remove install instruction for those cabs in the install.dat file
I know that's VERY vague, but you need to have some knowledge with kitchens and making them to do this. So, try first learning how to dump a ROM into a kitchen and remaking it. Ervius Visual kitchen is very nice. It has a GUI interface and you can dump a ROM right from that. THEN you take the stuff you don't want in it and recreate it!

Thanks, I was possibly hoping to avoid the kitchen approach. Do know how to do it, didn't want to go that route. There is a utility for the AT&T version that someone created, of course, can't find the link now, crudscraper or something like that. It does exactly this. i was hoping to find something similar for the Sprint version.
Thanks for the reply, vague or not, it's appreciated.

See, every carrier adds it's own software on the ROM, so the AT&T ROM probably has it's own software. I can imagine one way the person could do it is see all the files and registry entries that are in each of the app cabs in the dumped ROM and have the app remove them. Someone would have to specifcally make it for Sprint. It's not something that can be ported from what I know.
If you going to go the route of changing registry settings, etc., then I would first disable the CM_Guardian_Service first. It will put back some of the settings you delete if you don't disable that PoS.
