Greetings all:
Firstly: Thanks to all for such a great place to come and find soooo much info. I am addicted to it all.
Second: I am totally NEW to all this and I am still trying to understand alot of the terminology, items, methods, and so on.
Third: I have a ton of questions as I am a sponge and soak up info rapidly, and I want to know all I can because I am quickly developing an incredible hunger for the PDA/Smartphone arena.
Lastly, and the reason for the body armor, I have a noob question: When I read about and see the term "radio" or "radio ROM", what does that mean exactly, ya know in easy to grasp speak. I can see you ready to fire bullets at the new guy for such a question, but I really have no idea, let alone why the need to possibly update the ROM for it.
My thanks in advance for the direction.
Cheers all, and keep up such a great forum community.
Chris
Radio is what effects your signal strength, receiving sms messages, mms messages, phone calls, etc.
Jeepers, I do feel like a dope. Thanks Madcap. Please if you would, does upgrading the ROM serve to improve upon said functions? And is there a baseline that most use to gauge improvments to the radio.
I read alot about the 1.41.00.10 ROM in another thread. Some users reported a decline in performance. Was that something the measured with website, or tool.
Or rather was it something they measured as a matter of comparison to earlier ROM performance.?
I am wondering myself thru this all just exactly how would I gauge when to make upgrades etc, and how to tell if said upgrade was a performance boost?
Obviously from what I read, most users try something and go back if no improvements came out of it. But again, is there a software prog. or website to take before and after readings?
Being new is rather uncomfortable here.........
Thanks again for the speedy reply to my original question.
Depends on what your device is... I dunno what you have... wizard, hermes, artemis.. ??
Ok first off.........GO SOX...........MASSACHUSETTS !!!!!!!!!!!!......................
Ok, I just got a few new phones. I am on Tmo with a Wing. I purchased an unlocked 8525. I also ordered Cingular service with the Samsung Blackjack just to test them out and see if I might switch over. I have 30 days to decide and compare it to Tmo in terms of service and data/internet access.
Messing around here today, reading and such I thought to play a bit with ROM stuff., I followed the guide listed in the WiKi and got my........and bear with me cause these terms are Greek to me.......... SPL to 2.10.01.....and my radio ROM to 1.41.00.10.
I plan to test the Cingular SIM in the Blackjack for service. But also plan to put the Cing SIM in the unlock 8525 and test the service there as well. How will I know if the 1.41 is better than the 1.16 (?) it had on it before I updated? etc. Is there some way of getting numbers or readings? Follow me so far.
Ya know.....play FEAR with an NVIDIA 7900 and check FPS for say 40. Put in an NVIDIA 8800GTX and play and find out you get 98 FPS. Clearly a diffrence you see in "hard numbers". Boy.......rambling now....but you get the drill.
the Sox are losing right now 3-0 against oakland in the 4th .. .. when you have a 12 game lead in the AL east u can afford to lose a few though .. ...
The 8525 is a Hermes.. read the Wiki on how to upgrade a hermes, also check the Wiki to find out what the Wing and black jack are...I'm not sure.
Understood, but how can I tell if my phone is performing better with this 1.41 new radio ROM, over an earlier version or rather over the version that is going to come installed with the Blackjack?
I, not unlike others, want to get the best poss. performance out of the 8525, and I am keeping my fingers crossed that Cing. beats Tmo in terms of cell clarity, better coverage and faster data for internet etc. I am also poss making the move because Cing has 3G (?) and Tmo doesent yet. And, when Tmo does bring it about I have read that it will operate on diff freq. making the unlocked phones of today unusable so to speak. Thats it in a nutshell........and my desire to get the most performance from my equipment.
And lead or not, I dont feel they can give up one here or there. I have that summer slump fear ya know.
yeah well, right now the Sox couldn't hit a beachball.
Only way you can find out which has better performance is to test them over a period of time... compare them in places where ur signal is usually pretty choppy
Damn.........I thought it would come down to that.........I wanted an easier, smoother way out. Oh well........I will test away.
Any thoughts on Cin over Tmo or vise/versa.
Ha.......beachball..........good lord.........
I can tell you that where I live, Cingular is much better. But it can really vary on your location. I'm on the opposite side of the country from you though. With radio quality, there really is no standard, or way to gauge it with hard numbers. you'll just have to use trial and error. Good luck! It can be fun (and trying sometimes) to learn more abort your device.
I'm in the Boston area and T-Mobile has been great just as good if not better than Cingular.
This is just the type of input I was hoping to see posted. Really guys, I appreciate it.

Hiya Guys & Dolls,
I'm back after a long break and have been reading all through the various posts i have missed in the last year or so.
I used to be an xda user (still am but am upgrading)
In the next couple of weeks I will be getting an MDA Vario (with Co-pilot)
and my wife will be getting a girlie pink MDA Compact II (with Co-pilot)
The big question is, what tweaks do you all think are necessary to make the devices "Liveable with" I gather they need a bit of help in the speed department! I gather overclocking is a necessity?
Also I have just been reading in one of the forums and the Wiki section about "BIG Storage" What will this achieve for me? What benefits is is likely to give me?
Hopefully I will be an active member of the forums once again; very shortly! Whats the point in having these things if you dont tinker! Theres no fun in just leaving well alone!
Hope some of you out there will give me some pointers in the right direction and some suggestions on what i might feel necessary to do.
Thanks in advance. its great to be back and hopefully I will find all the memebers on this site just as friendly and helpful as they used to be.
Look forward to hearing from you all soon.
your first step a bit more speed is to remove the tmobile customisation.
to do this hard reset the vario (or at first boot) then after all the windows regional settings, digitiser screens you will get a windows that says installing customisation (or words to that affect) quickly soft reset the vario and it will reboot without all the bloat.
there are lots of other tweaks in this forum, that will make your vario very useable
welcome back
R
So just to be clear...
If I do a soft reset while the screen is showing the T-Mobile installer working *after* the device is loaded and running WM5, my MDA Vario will still work and connect to the T-Mobile network for calls, GPRS, etc., just quicker?
If I later decide I'm missing something, can I just hard reset and let T-Mobile load all it's bloat?
the mdac2 is actually a charmer not a magician, so go following any guides for a magician regarding roms or you'll wreck the phone.
Thanks Dave!
Thanks for that dave, there are so many names for these things I managed to get myself confused already! Its a definite mine field!
I shall have to start looking in a different place to get the missus's phone sorted now!
I knew you guys were great, you just saved me a costly misfortune from the outset!
Oh dear!
Just looked on the Wiki pages and there is bugger all for the Charmer..!
Does that mean i'm gonna be limited to my options for making it useable?
Hope thats not gonna be the case?

The mdac 2 is great and you can mod it as much as anything else. The overclocking works fine as do most other tweaks that work on the Vario.
Good day:
I recently purchased a Cingular 8125 on eBay... It should be coming in the mail today hopefully. I have been reading up on these upgrade ROMs, and I understand I have a few different options.
I am looking to possibly upgrade this phone to WM6.
I understand there are plenty of general FAQ's on these ROMs, but I am looking for some personal experiences on this particular phone. What ROMs have people used, what would you recommend for this phone? Any do's and don'ts? Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Welcome to the group...
Other than physical appearance, all Wizards are the same.
Whether it be a 9100, MDA, 8125... Once flashed with the same ROM, usability will be the same.
In the meanwhile, take some time to read at least the stickies in the Wizard subforum and once you get your phone, determine whether it's a G3 or G4.
Cool thanks for the info man. Yeah I have been reading through the stickies, I saw the guide there that you are talking about. There is some pretty good stuff up there. Just was lookin for some personal experiences and such.
Thanks!
Edit: Just noticed you got the 8125. How does your's work with all that stuff on there? Any bugs or anything? Any general downsides from using that or just using the factory WM5?
I'm actually experimenting with a different rom now... I normally change my sig only when I'm sufficiently satisfied with the current configuration.
BatteryStatus and Oxios Memory are highly recommended and doesn't interfere with the functionality of any ROM. Voice Command is just preference although some people argue that Speed Dialer is better.
all i can say is dont think that your an expert after you've flash a few roms. believe me when i say you'll get careless and **** somethin up. i stupidly tried to flash ipl/spl rom on my G4 8125 and bricked it. i got it replaced by AT&T but damn if that feeling didnt suck. just be careful, pay attention and have fun. b4 you know it you'll be addicted. just like everyone else
im a cingular 8125 user as well, however im using the T-mobile service on it. What i can say about roms is that, you have to thank some of the people on here that make the kitchens and the roms. They spend time figuring out and fixing bugs that we all have. The best bet is to keep trying a rom, until "it fits your needs" and is stable. The things i look for is
#1 Stability - (no errors, bugs)
#2 performance - (speed, boot-time.. etc)
#3 battery consumption
Greetings and salutations all,
I've recently picked up an unlocked AT&T Tilt for use here in Canada on the Rogers network using my existing SIM and I have a simple question (or two):
What is the simplest way to give an AT&T Tilt, Kaiser (Tytn II) functionality and feel. I've compared both the Tytn II and Tilt side by side on PDAdb.net and it would appear that the only difference between the two other than simple cosmetics is the lack of the conference cam. I've read through some of the posts and noted the updated cab for the home screen, and was wondering if this is all that is required.
Also, seeing as I'm not an AT&T subscriber how would one go about obtaining updates for the device as I would expect that I wouldn't be able to pull updates from the HTC e-club...
Feel free to reply or drop me a line on MSN via: [email protected]
Cheers,
Kris.
P.S. I know I'll probably get flamed as others have asked the same thing and were pointed to other posts, but there's entirely too much data to sift through :s

wow...read our minds. I'll give you your answer. CID unlock your phone and flash HTC shipped rom. How to do this...read the stickies on top.
You are correct, there is a lot of info here but that doesn't justify your feeling that others should do you footwork for you.
If you want to benefit then you need to be willing to put forth the effort.
I'm closing this thread.
So I just got my tilt today. This is my first smartphone and I just had a couple questions before I start flashing roms and such.
If I flash the HTC factory ROM, is this a completely different operating system than wm6?
Do wm programs work on the HTC ROM?
I know I sound stupid but I have to start somewhere.

ey, man, wellcome...
The right place to start is "reading"... there are a lot of ussefull info in the Wiki ... take time to read and to understand what you are reading... when you'll be familiarized with terms and concepts, then you'll have many questions to do, and someone take time to help you, but for now you need read
Cheers.
Start Here
A good place to start is the Kaiser Wiki. Located right here on XDA.
As far as flashing different roms go, every rom currently available for the Kaiser (Tilt) are Windows Mobile 6 roms.
The only issues I have run into with installing programs is when the install CAB file is locked down to a particular device. This was common with the original installer of TomTom GPS floating around the site.
Since you are new to the game, as I was just 18 months ago, the biggest piece of advice I can give is this: Search the forum before asking questions. This is not to avoid flaming, although that may happen from time to time, but due to the high volume of posting on the site, it may take longer to get a response if you create a new topic as opposed to adding your question to an existing one.

Awww, you beat me to it...
Thanks
Thanks for the response, I have been reading a lot lately but sometimes it is really hard to move on because people used advanced terms which are hard to find the meaning to without reading for hours through forums.
Just flashed on the HTC ROM, works perfectly.
I have really been looking to get the TouchFLO working on my Tilt, is this a setting or a button? Or do I need to install something?

Go to the wiki (its at the top of every page, its called "XDA-Wiki" and go to the kaiser section and read up. Also, go to my Tilt thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=341024
I would also like to take this time to say "I told you so" to all the people who didn't think the majority of people with newbie questions would be Tilt users, and chastised me for making a "Tilt-only" thread.
defense
well in defense of myself.... a tilt was only $300 with new service where if I bought the "TyTn II" which is the same thing without a camera on the front, which I dont need, I would have to pay upwards of $800.
also thanks a lot for the threads very helpful
Now with the HTC rom there of course is no telenav, now do I have to pay for the GPS service through AT&T and Pay $9.99 for the telenav, or could I just purchase tom tom6 and be done with it and not pay at&t $9.99 a month for the gps service? thanks in advance for the response

If you purchase TomTom, then you are done. No monthly fees associated with it.
As far as your TouchFLO question, you need to flash your Tilt to a rom that supports it. As you will learn from browsing this site, cooked roms are still very new for the Kaiser/Tilt, so there will only be a few available.
For a basic TouchFLO rom with high stability, I recommend AustinSync's BIGstorage rom. TeleNav will be missing from it, but you will be able to access all of AT&T's internal networks such as MEdia Net without issue.
just for terminology purposes, kaiser/tilt is a pocketpc, not a smartphone.
Hey guys, my name is Sean and I'm from Pittsburgh PA.
So I believe I found the right place here at xda-dev. I just got a Touch Pro2 with sprint. The guy I bought the phone from offered me one with newer firmware but I told him I wanted the one with the oldest (in case some vulnerabilities were patched), so I think it is WM 6.1 or something, definitely not 6.5. Anyways, when I go to setting -> about is says TouchFLO 3D 2.1.38416.1; what other information can I find as to my version that may be of use to me?
I am sorry I am such a newb at this. Basically, I want to get the most out of my phone as possible (hell, it cost me 300$ [no rebate since I have an older data plan]) and do not even know where to start. There is so much information on these forums I am having a hard time making sense out of it. If anyone could give me some information as to how to figure out what I can do or some recommendations I would very much appreciate it. Thanks
-Sean
edit: I have been looking through the wiki and faqs so please give me a bit more insight other than steering me to their direction. Thanks again
I suggest you look on ppcgeeks for more cdma based TP2 information. Most of the people on the tp2 section there are sprint users.
thanks
thanks for the advice. ill check it out.
you're going to want to upgrade to 6.5, you can do so much more! and check out ppcgeeks.com.
So a few days back I installed mightyrom and about 20 cabs. Wasn't that difficult once i figured it out. Thanks for pointing me to ppcgeeks.
That's about it, but, what kind of stuff do you guys put on your tp2?
my personal favorite is slingbox, nothing like having a portable cable box that makes calls .
is it possible to play netflix's watch instantly on the tp2? That would be awesome.
