Question about mobile google.com... - General Questions and Answers

How do I get to google without using this ridiculous crippled page for weak mobile devices? I want the full google search that leads me to full websites, rather than a crippled google search that leads me to parsed websites for use with eight year old Nokia browsers, so someone please enlighten me, as I can't seem to find the answer to this.

You can click on "Preferences" on the bottom of Google's homepage to change whether Google formats the results for your phone or not. Is that what you're looking for?

I checked, there's not even an option for that in prefs.

Strange, I have that option. What browser are you using?

PIE.. wasn't too impressed with the performance of anything else.

Okay, so here's where I think I might be confused by what you're saying. When I search using Google with PIE, I get every result I would normally get on my laptop/desktop. The only difference is that the resulting pages will be formatted differently to look a bit better on a mobile device, but the pages are complete.
The only thing I can see that you might be talking about is that there's an option on Google.com to search "Mobile Web (Beta)", under the search button, which does bring up limited, or "crippled" results. But you have to manually click that option each time you search.

I wish it were that simple.. when I go to google.com, it brings me straight to a mobile version of google, with no option of changing to a non-mobile version.
It's not so much that I have a mobile version of google, as it is that google wants to parse all of the sites I go to from the search results.

Well, yeah, I get taken directly to www.google.com/m rather than the standard www.google.com when I'm using PIE. Is that the same mobile site you're directed to? If it is, I might be at a loss on this one. I'm not getting the same limitations you are and I can't seem to replicate it either.

Most of the time I find their reformatted page better for viewing. However if you navigate to a link where you actually need to view the full page unaltered you can click the "view in html" link at the bottom and it will bring you to the unaltered page. Hope that helps.

FroYo: Download + Play Flash Games?

We've always been able to download .swf flash game files, but with Flash 10.1 I was hoping we could put them on the sdcard and play offline.
Anyone know how to do this? (For cataloging / playing Flash games when there's no connection.)
HAH! Idea: what about storing an html page that just launches a SWF? What's the least amount of code in a page that would do that?

Hahaha funny you say this, I tried it earlier after reading your message and no go.
For starters, no way to access local file from native browser (others may support it but native doesn't).
Closest I could come was by selecting the html file with astro, then choosing to open it with "HTML Viewer" (built into astro I think?) but it didn't show the embedded flash object.
I think best way to achieve this would be an app that can read a directory on sdcard and generate the html to load into a webview. I was thinking about throwing something together real quick but haven't had time to look and see if something like it already exists.
Damn, that's too bad.
Yeah, I find it very odd that you can't browse local html files.
A long time ago (G1 days) I tried all sorts of //file:/// weird stuff (like Firefox does) and couldn't get anything to work. I can't believe there's no way to browse locally.
Try file explorer in market for local browser.... let me know if it works lol

htmlfileprovider is your friend:

Yeah, I found this in another forum after posting this. Still, would be nicer to have a little interface that scans and builds a little menu out of flash files

V True, if I had anything approaching free time at the moment I'd be tempted to give it a go.

Youtube

It's not really much, but I have noticed that finding youtube on the market is incredibly difficult. Whenever I search "youtube," I get hundreds of results that are not youtube before I give up. I realize that it can be done by scanning a QR code, but I deal like google should at least have a better search engine for the market.

When I search for "youtube" in the market it's usually in the first 3 results that are shown :/. That's wierd, I know the market is based on phone carrier and region but still you'd think something as common as "youtube" would get roughly the same results regardless of configuration.
might going to m.google.com and clicking youtube help? Just thinking off the top of my head.
Search by Publisher perhaps?
"pub:Google Inc."
Powered by Android
https://market.android.com/search?q=youtube
Look for the official one, should be 4th
That's strange - I get it as the 4th result when I search. I'm on T-Mobile in the US -- same as you?

[Q] Petty Google Search Annoyance

When I search from either the Google search widget or the HTC browser, instead of returning the results on the standard Google homepage, the results get returned as per the attachment.
Any ideas on how I can fix it? I know it is a trivial issue, but it is really annoying.
Thanks.
Never seen that before. Mine goes to the Google page search results.
Have you tried updating the Google Search app? It's in the Market.
Yep, I tried that with no joy.
I assume it's some kind of Vodafone addition in order to try to gather metrics on usage.
It's just really annoying and I'd very much like to go back to the proper results page...
I'm not sure I get what the problem is... The screenshot looks like the search results on my phone and pc browser.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
Here is an example of the searches side by side.
As I say, it's a petty problem but very annoying.
re:Browser settings
Just open the browser, menu>more>settings> tick mobile view
Unfortunately that setting was already ticked.
I think that someone has created a custom search (Using this: http://www.google.com/cse/) and incorporated that instead. I assume it must be Vodafone.

[Q] using search function of xda website with xoom

I've been meaning to post this for sometime now.
When i want to search for something on xda forums using my xoom, i click the search bar, then click the text box. no sooner does my keyboard pop up that its gone. therefore I am unable to type or search anything.
I am using the stock keyboard of EOS ICS 1.0.0.0 but it as always happened even when i was on stock 3.2.
is it a problem with forums or something i can fix. it only happens with xda, all the other forums i use like, msfn, android forums, xoomforum, ipmart, htc the search function works fine. Fortunately i still have a laptop so can do searches on there

Have noticed this since April of last year. The other day I tried again with all the browsers I have installed on my WiFi ICS Xoom: built in, Chrome beta, Firefox, & Dolphin HD. Same old, same old. If I want to search I have to leave the tablet and find my laptop. Usually the extra effort keeps me from diddling around
Pretty sure the last time I checked into this it didn't matter which site version I enable for XDA - same problem. Heck, I also remember I couldn't even log in and stay logged in. No idea about that status of that issue.
Rob
Same thing happens to me on my xoom as well as my Galaxy S2.
If i'm on either of these, I click on the 'search this forum' drop down tool bar, but I don't click on the text box as that pulls up the keyboard resulting in the drop down going away again.
When the search tool bar drops down, instead of the text box, click on 'Advanced Search' option just below it, this lets you enter your search term on a separate page. (You don't have to fill in the advanced sections).
It's a bit long-winded but has the desired affect without having to fire up your PC/Laptop.
It happens to me as well. I just click on the advanced search and search that way. Chrome Beta is the only mobile browser where the search function works correctly on XDA...at least that I'm aware of.
Anyone tried reporting this to the Admins?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=276306
It has a better chance of being fixed if one of the site admins see's it.

[Q] Bad "MultiUpload"

When on xda-developers website: anytime I've had a link on the website which required me to go to Multiupload to get a file to download, I am always redirected to this website, lnx.lu & I can't get the file I wanted. This VERY aggravating!!!! Is this just me or are others experiencing this also?
lnx.lu is a site forwarder. It's like go.to/blah, or tinyurl.com/blah, except that you also get money the more people click on your link. The site probably requires javascript enabled to function. Also, some mobile browsesrs don't like these forwarding sites, and will throw an error. Worse come to worst, find a direct link to the file, or just search the internet for the file name.

You're probably correct, but I have noticed this result using more than one link on xda-developers, in fact there were quite a few. Also, I have used many links before, even ones that now guide me to this page. It makes me think that 1) I have something wrong w/my PC or 2) the site has been compromised (HIGHL UNLIKELY).
& oh, BTW, this happened using my desktop, not a mobile browser.
