Being very computer savvy and having flashed a good 20+ roms, I am completely stumped by the fact that I cannot get the vista flash workaround to WORK! I have faria's wm6 on my wizard and its been acting up so i wanted to try out the Xplore2.0 rom. My Xp laptop is having problems and will not stay connected to AS for long enough for the RUU to connect. I tried the Vista method to no avail. Can someone who has tried it post ALL of the tools needed? I read somewhere that version 2.00.1 of the RUU didnt work, but that is all I am able to find.
Thank you for any and all replies.
Have tried all StepbyStep postings but coudn´t get it running.
Going to AKU3.3 worked without problems - but old RUU using for Core 2.0 for example didn´t work.
So i switched back to xp for a while.
Even VirtualMachine didn´t work for me.
Sorry.

do you think installing xp as a dual boot will help?
I dont really have that option. The laptop I am on has a very small hd and id have to resize it to do that. I DO have an XP laptop, but that laptop is having problems keeping AS connected (its dying).
guys, have you tried this?

This one I was talking about. No way. Sorry.
Not for me.
Yes, that is what i was speaking of in my opening post. And based on a few others replies, something is causing it to not work for some ppl. I am trying to find out what we have in common. My guess is either the rom, or the RUU itself. I am unable to find an older RUU to try with the xplore 2.0 rom thouhg.
Also, I see papamopps browsing the vista flashing tut on modaco Good to see someone else still reading around to find an answer.
Can't get it to work here too. I'm using XP through vmware now.

Post 5 here saying it works for him.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=292492
The thread is about WMDC 1.0 so not sure if that is necessary or not? He also says he upgraded to Vista from XP sp2.
Run Windows XP within VMWare and flashing that way works. I have read reports of a few people doing this as a last resort, and finding it works perfectly.
I'm not sure how *safe* it is since it virtualises your USB ports, so you may be at risk from bricking, but it does work.

Hi!
I made the changes suggested in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=291723
Since then I flashed my Universal 2 times with no problems at all.
Because of the change to the hardware driver I don´t think it has anything to do with the fact that I made an upgrade from XP SP2 to Vista.
Worked on Vista for me to upgrade to WM6, but it wouldn't work on my dash to downgrade. Tried for like 2 hours, then tried once on my XP desktop and worked perfectly.
Using VMWare Workstation 6 worked perfectly for me, I must admit I was surprised.
For a moment actually I thought one could actually upgrade their ROM to Vista! OH! How punctuation changes things!
Here's a quick and easy guide to help get you going with windows vista: http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=23&Itemid=27
is it possbile to flash roms with the RUU if ur phones in bootmode..I'm looking to upgrade to vista this is one thing keeping me back..

very helpful advice, thx a lot.

Using VMware
I had problems flashing using vista so tried Microsoft's virtual pc 2007 but failed to deliver. I then managed to find the latest version of VMWare Workstation which was much more professional and worked so well I got butterflies.
I used to use an old pc for flashing but no more. It works perfect but please please make sure you download and install Vmware workstation 6 plus as anything other crashes on vista. Trust me been there!
And once you have imaged xp make sure you also install activesync 4.5 for best results.
Good luck and pm me if you have any questions.

i have, i downloaded from microsoft
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?
familyid=46F72DF1-E46A-4A5F-A791-09F07AAA1914&displaylang=en
as i read it if you are using wm6 then vista will work for syncing & with no problems getting into boot loader for upgrading etc. with this update
but maybe not for downgrading to wm5 god forbid?
in my experience using wm6 with active sync 4.5 on xp was temperamental. but using wm5 was fine
i am very new to all this but if this helps anyone then it is a good thing
i updated the rom on my ppc6800 useing vista and it worked without flaw, and this is my first pda sence my old palm, which wasnt a phone, and had a non color screen,so im not an expert with this things.
i done wm6 on o2 xda orbit using vista home premium yesterday
1st time 1st try
worked
I'm running Vista Ultimate and have flashed my phone (charmer) numerous times. IMHO, the best way is if you're using RUU, use VMWare Workstation. If you're flashing using some other method which doesn't put your phone in bootloader mode before beginning to flash, then flash directly from within Vista. In fact, for normal flashing this is my favoured method, i.e. flashing directly from within Vista without making the phone enter bootloader. But then again, if you're flashing official ROMs, you only have RUUs in which case use VMWare Workstation.

Yes this can be done. However if your phone is stuck in the bootloader the UNI_ExitBootloader program will NOT run for me. I had to go find a XP machine.
Hi Guys, Does any one knows if we still have the same problem flashing from Vista...I can not wait to flash my Universal from my Vista PC...but everytime I get a error message...
Any ideas?
At moment is not POSSIBLE to flash directely with MS Vista.
It's possible via a virtual PC or if you change drivers of activesync or PDA, I don't know exactely, i've read this in a forum but i forgot.
Via WINDows XP only at time
Via WINDOWS XP only at times.

Yeah I think you can, just install Activesync 4.5 to use its drivers instead of the Windows Mobile Device Center thingy..
and hey teddybear.. you're spamming.
nearly..
actually I have managed to flash under Vista using a solution founs somewhere on the Internet but it's the same I saw suggested here on xda. basically, you have to install activesync connection drivers (only them, not the whole AS program!) to Vista so it'll will recognize your device in bootloader mode. You can continue to use the mobile device centre afterwards.
This is just a preview of the procedure you have to go through, now use the search function or google to find the whole thing and do it, it requires not more than 15 mins (if you're quite a dummy), probably less.
greetings
The solution!
Check my info for flashing in Vista...

i tried what daunes has posted, but under dev mgmt i dont have "Mobile devices" at all!
any straightforward way of doing it?
@ dreamtheater39
Wich version of Vista are you running?
I hope it's not a beta version?!
And also what is very important is that you have to put your device in bootloader mode.
Please let me know!

Hey daunes,
I got it to work eventually! I hadnt put it to bootloader mode, so my device used to appear as "HTC Universal" in device manager under "Portable devices" which i tried to upgrade (driver update). In bootloader mode it showed up differently as you've mentioned and everything worked fine! A big thanks for this, i'm now finally able to flash and monkey around with different roms, something i quite missed ever since i moved over to vista!
Cheers!

No thanx glad to help
Hi,
I tried to upgrade the ROM, unfortunately we had a power cut (sod's law haha) and my PC cut out. Now when I try to turn my XDA on (o2 exec) all I get is a dark screen with USB at the top and V1.01, I've tried the recovery tool included in the update but obviously didn't work because windows doesn't recognise the device.
Any ideas would be MASSIVELY appreciated.
btw I've tried doing a hard reset and pressing 0 but it just resets the device to the above screen =/
Thanks,
Lee
Just Re-Run The Rom Upgrade Utility And Reflash The Rom.
Regards,
OllieD
Tried that several times, the problem is that Vista isn't recognising the device thus the rom flash can't find it. Ive been through all the Wiki how-to's with no avail
Ive Never Flashed With Vista And Never Will.
I Read There Was Issues And Didnt Think It Was Worth The Risk.
Its Never Wise To Run Flashing Software In An OS It Wasnt Designed For.
Anyway Flash With XP And Your Problems Will Be Gone.
I Dont Think XP Even Recognises The Device When Its In Bootloader The Flashing Software Just Knows What To Do, Although The Software Wasnt Designed With Vista In Mind.

OllieD

There are some year 2004 XP drivers available for Vista. Do a search and you will find it.
It is too late and I am tired. If you can't find it then I will try to help you later.
Good luck and don't worry as nothing is wrong with your device. Wrong drivers for PC.
KOR!
If nothing else works, try using mtty to erase the device, and reflash!
Oh, and word of advice: Never flash with Vista, it f.cks your device! Always do your falshing with XP, that's the most stable out there...

I always flash my devices on Vista, and never had any problems. Though, you have to have proper XP 2004 year driver installed.

Do you try to flash via a hub connection? Because it's recommended to connect the device directly to the PC!

well, yeah. but in that case, I could argue that the driver, which counts, is from XP
But anyway, most people here would recommend against flashing in Vista, unless you must. XP is just a lot more stable, and causes fewer problems. but let's not get into which is better, shall we?
help!!!!!
hey guys, ive been stuck in this bootloader thing for ages now its been a day ive had no luck so far im using vista myself and there is no XP computer available to me unfortunately. the mtty utility says cannot open ports, im not using a hub either and the unit_exitbootloader.exe does not help either i need some serious help please. the screen is stuck at USB on the top (whe i take out the usb cable it says Serial on top) and v1.00 on the bottom. please help, ive got vodafone v1640 version of universal. thanks in advance

Hi there
Unfortuantley not.
I tried a long time to try and get something similar to active sync or itself, but did not work in Ubuntu 8.10. Sigh...........
Hope someone gets it going!
Unfortunate
It's unfortunate that it doesn't work with Ubuntu. I was about to dump Windows and make the switch but this is a setback. So it doesn't work through USB/bluetooth at all?
ubuntu/Linux and Windows Mobile
I've tried this couple years ago without any luck. I found this on Ubuntu wiki
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PortableDevices/WindowsMobile
It states that WM5 devices work. and that they may get WM6 to work as well.
Also see this.

It seems there may be hope !!!
I've posted on this a few times, however for some reason I never get much of a response, so i'll try again.
I have a RHOD500 Verizon TP2 with the stock ROM on it. I would like to flash a new ROM, so I'm trying to update with OliPROs CDMA HardSPL. When I run the HardSPL update in Auto it crashes the program on my Vista 32 machine (ALL antivirus and firewalls disabled), when I try it in Manual it errors out with either 260 Connection Failed or 246 Connection Failed. I AM synced currently with Windows Mobile Device Center and have tried different USB ports, running SSPL-Manual on the phone (never gets to a black screen, only freezes the screen), and installed eanblerapinew.cab on the phone. I've also tried a hard reset on the phone, which is the current status now. Does anyone have any ideas, this is driving me freakin bonkers.
Thanks,
Forrest

I wish. I tried another usb cable, as well as every single usb port on the computer, all to no avail. Why the heck can't I flash the stupid boot loader!
Maybe this flash unlocker don't work on Verizon phones... thats my guess and I wouldn't be suprised if that were the case. Verizon always has some kind of trick up their sleeves to further lock their devices. It's like tethering and Internet Sharing. For the life of me I can not get that to work at all.. it worked on my old Q9M, but not this. I think VZW pulled some trick to force you to have to buy their BB modem.
If you ever figure anything out, please do post about it.

I thought the exact same thing so I didn't bother PMing him. I did figure it out however. I tried another computer with Windows XP and ActiveSync 4.5 instead of Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 and it worked like a charm. I have not been able to flash a ROM using the MicroSD card though, which is odd. I've put the Olipro 1.0 boot loader on the phone and put the image in the root of the SD card, renamed it RHODIMG.nbh, but still no dice. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong...
