This is just an FYI. I had my SP5 and SP5m repaired via I-Mates USA warranty repair and this is my personal experience. Phone was sent in to PocketPC Techs.com for repair and they do not give you a refurbished or new unit. They will though replace the circuit board for the unit and ship the exact screen and chassis back to you. They do this, as explained to me, because some people scratch the screen and drop the phones. You don't get no replacements with I-Mate. Another thing that you have to do is pre-pay $60 for the repairs and if THEY determine that the damage or faulty hardware was still under warranty, they will refund you the money. If not, they keep the money and your phone. They will send you an estimate if its more and you have to pay in full before they will ship it out.
My experience was OK. I was refunded the money back because it was still under warranty but it took 1-month to have my phone repaired and sent back to me. They did not have the circuit boards in stock so they held onto my phone. You would think that they would send me out a refurbished one just because of the circumstances but they stick to the guidelines imposed by I-Mate. So kids, if you buy an I-Mate, be fair warned of some of the caveats. Not that they are bad, just some things to know. Remember, there are many versions of the same phone by HTC and other manufactures. Do your research and check warranty fine print. I have found that carriers phones are not that bad. Especially when you can change the ROM's and you can do a next business day replacement for 1-year.

I dropped my xda II last week and I couldn't switch it on. I took it to the O2 Hong Kong for repair. As the warranty had expired, I need to pay and that's alright. They said the mainboard is out of order and needed be changed and charged me $1250-HKD (about 160-USD)! Wow, that's expensive and so I took the unit back. I then, through a friend, got the unit to a local shop for repair. WTF! He said it was only the on/off switch damaged and that's why I couldn't turn it on. He repaired it within an hour and charged me $100-KHD (12.8-USD)!!!!
That's the way the official dealer operates. I am not angry with the high cost of repair. If it was really the mainboard damaged, I could bear with the cost because I damaged it. But they are outright liars and just want to make a fortune by telling lies to customers.
To be honest, xda II is a fine piece of kit and I owned a xda I as well. But I'm fed up with the dealership and the after-sales. (apart from this time, there've been so many bad things about O2 Hong Kong). I won't buy any products from O2 any more.
As unbelievable and downright illegal as that sounds, that problem is very common within the world of mobile phone repairs.
Best to always check like you did, first with the dealer and then a third party to see if there are any differences in what they say.

As it seems most of us suffer from the faults the early version of TP came with.
I myself have a hot GPS that looses connection, my black paint is comming off the alaluminum part of the housing, my speaker volume is way to low to understand the caller,...
As I disvovered all this problems during the first days of testing, I asked the retailer (2call.nl) to take back my TP and replace it with a non faulty one (if HTC has already implemented counter measure for all this faults), or at least a slightly better one (I would continue the exchange process with HTC until I got what I expect for 500 EUR).
Unfortunately not only the TP device is below my expectations, but also the service.
2call refused to take my device back, as I already used it.
For two weeks I am writing mails to 2call and HTC to teach those people in European law (two weeks retun right even without reason).
HTC confirmed this, but can unfortunately not help me directly. Changing my TP has to be done by the retailer, HTC said. All They can do is send it in for repair (to EuroTwice.be).
Now my questions:
Did anybody here managed to get his device replaced by a new one from his retailer (or maybe by HTC directly)?
Any experience with EuroTwice? Are they fast, good organised, reachable by phone and speaking english or german?
I am leaving to Japan in two weeks, and want to get a working TP device before I leave.
With the current service disaster I am in, this however seems to be mission impossible.
If your getting pealing paint then your device has more than enough reason to be replaced. That alone while cosmetic is covered under normal defects and faults. Remind the company of that.
You should get a replacement. If they refuse again threaten youll be in touch with your [Netherlands equivalent] of trading standers as they are breaking eu trading laws.
HTC is perfectly correct, your contract is with the shop that you purchased it from, im not sure about your local law but using UK law it firstly isnt fit for the purpose it was intended, secondly so long as its not down to ware and tear or missuse you can claim its faulty, both of these are grounds for refunds let alone repair. The question usually centres around wether or not it was missused, ie excessive heat applied or water, which is why the store you purchased it from would send it to an authorised HTC centre for repair or replace.
your out side of the distance selling act of 14 days so thats not usable, your only course of action is to demand it retured to the manufacture for evaluation due to manufacture defects, its important to point out to the shop that its not them your enoyed at, if you go barging in with a i know my rights atitude they are unlikely to help you, also speak to the boss during the week, you may have spoken to a part time supervisor pretending to be boss esspecially at the weekend
Failing that, phone their head office making sure you get the names of everyone you speak too, and finally last resort contact your local trading standards office, its important you try all avenues before going there tho.

My question is, what is the extent of the coverage? Any details at all if possible from anyone who's had their phone physically damaged without warranty from the seller.
My situation is: bought a Touch HD from clove.co.uk a month ago, without insurance, and my dog just recently destroyed it . I called the north american service hotline, and heard my case, and suggested I call the hotline for the country my phone came from. Which I'll have to do tomorrow as theyre only open 8am - 8pm eastern time (im in CA).
So please, anyone with a similar experience, please let me know what can be done. Bad news or good news, doesn't matter.

Hi. Wow expensive chew toy! I will tell you from experience HTC is the absolute worst company I have ever had to deal with especially for warranty! I swear they will do everything in their power to avoid honoring the warranty so be careful how you answer their questions.
One example: I bought a used HTC S710 off ebay that was only 2 months old but had some keys that were not working right after about a month. Seller even gave me a copy of his original receipt showing it was under warranty which had 9 months left by time I realized the problem. First guy I talked to said it had to of been damage I caused or accused me of getting it wet but I didn't think that was the case. I know I didn't do either & it had been working for awhile & either way you'd think it should be covered under warranty within the 1st year or they'd at least look at it. When I brought up if it would be covered under warranty he said it depends on if it was damage I caused or not. Next guy I talked to asked if I had the original receipt & if I was the original purchaser. I said yes & no. Then I was told it was non transferable & only good for the original purchaser. I asked the seller if he'd mind sending it in for me & he said sure no problem. Well the next HTC guy said the warranty was invalid because they knew the phone had been resold. (It seems they take notes when you call in) They said they'd be happy to look at it but it'd be at least $80 & could be $120 for keypad issue & maybe much more depending on what the problem was, it could even hit $200 which is almost as much as I paid for the phone! I asked about buying parts & they send they don't sell to end users. I do some computer support for a company that sells & repairs cell phones (Sprint/Nextel) & had them contact HTC to find out they couldn't buy parts either. Run around left & right. I ended up buying replacement parts on ebay for like $30 & fixed it myself. It was a pain but it worked & I didn't give them my $. I swore I'd never buy another HTC but here I am with a Touch Dual & a Fuze. lol
I've read similar horror stories on the net so I know I'm not alone. Moral of the story is don't rely on HTC to honor any warranty & if they do you are one lucky SOB. I highly doubt they are going to cover yours if it is obvious it was chewed on (or dropped or run over or sat on or got wet etc) as they'll say it was abused & not a manufacturer's defect & therefore not warranty. (Not sure any company will cover such things, that is what insurance is for. lol) Odds are they'll gladly offer for you to ship it to them & they'll fix it for a fee but you might be better off cutting your losses now & selling it as-is for parts & buying a replacement. Along with some raw hide bones for yer pooch.

Yeah I don't put any faith at all into manufacturer warranties, I just wish they had hearts . But really, this blows and the irony is that earlier I was telling myself, after weeks of tweaking, that I'd lose some hair if I have to hard-reset anytime soon.

I wanted to buy my device abroad, and lucky me, I called reseller here.
Answer was "Warranty is valid only locally", meaning only in my country for device bought in my country!
And sorry to say, damage caused by a dog is not covered by warranty! At least here...

Adding my bit to the piece. Even when its a genuine fault, they are still hopeless.
Who has or have directly known anyone that has purchased a third-party insurance/warranty from squaretrade? I ask because I read good things about their warranties but can not find "real" (actual people on this board or elsewhere) who can give testimony for either good or bad.
I purchased a Sprint branded Touch Pro (using it on Verizon) from ebay, and it came in immaculate condition and fully functional as the seller stated. At the time, I thought the squaretrade warranty offered by the seller on ebay was a scam, but for $48 I figured it was cheap insurance. I know sometimes parts fail and as luck has it, the USB charge/sync port failed. I am in no way blaming the seller and am not going to try to scam my money back from them. Verizon will not touch it as it is not a device they sell technically and Sprint won't touch it either as I do not have a line of service with them.
HTC will not warranty it for free as I am not the original purchaser, and offer repairs at an estimated cost at or above what I paid for the device off ebay.
I filed a claim with squaretrade as my warranty states I am entitled to, and they promptly approved my claim and emailed me a pre-paid UPS return shipping label and claim they will have it repaired "usually within five days of receiving the device". I boxed it up, filled out the simple form they required and shipped it off.
Now this being my first time using this company and their service, up to this point I am pleased with them. Their customer service seems to be on par with Asurion and other types of services I have used in the past. I will be more than happy to update this thread when I receive my device back in working order and give a rating here.
Thanks for reading this rather long post, and I ask anyone who has dealt with them in the past to chime in with any feedback, good or bad regarding Squaretrade and their services.

What happened
I sent my GS3 to the main Samsung Repair Center for what has been confirmed as a hardware problem with the LCD screen. The repair report says "Warranty: No Warranty" and comes to a total cost of $130. I did indeed buy the GS3 unsubsidized on eBay gently used. So, do not have sales receipt.
Their Warranty
"Products are free from defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service for the period commencing upon the date of purchase by the first consumer purchaser and continuing for [one year] "
Argument
Samsung confirmed the phone did had a defect under normal use circumstances. The only hard part is the proof of purchase. However, most importantly, the GS3 was first released in May 2012. It can't possibly be older than a year. IMO Samsung should honor that and repair the factory hardware problem with no charge to their customer.
Next move is to call Custom Support (oye vey). But first, does anyone have suggestions or experience in a similar situation?

I'm assuming that they are claiming no warranty because you didn't provide a copy of the original sales receipt. Since their warranty language specifically states 1 year from the original purchasers date it means the warranty is transferable.
You're not going to have a choice but to call customer service since the repair centers are rarely capable of approving warranty work without all the required proof of purchase info. The repair centers are often authorized repair centers that have contracts with the device manufacturers.

I ran into a similar issue with the screen on my "lightly-used" Galaxy Note 10.1 that I acquired through a trade (for a set of 4 Nokian snow tires + chains = win).
Anyways .. as the poster said above me, the repair shop (most likely an "authorized", contracted repair center) will only deal in YES or NO terms and they aren't authorized to budge for anyone.
You will need to call customer support. I was able to get my tablet repaired, but only after calling customer support about a half-dozen times. It is the luck of the draw on who you'll get to answer your call so just be persistent and quote their policy directly. I've also found in these situations that embellishing a little (if you're cool with that) can go a long ways ... something minor like telling them the person you spoke with at the repair center told you it "shouldn't be a problem" and you just needed to call customer support first so they'd authorize it.
Send the message that you aren't going to go away/allow yourself to be screwed over.
