best? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario ROM Development

what is the best...quickest...most used...newest wm6 so i can get updated

go for xplore. I strongly recommend it. Make sure you upgrade properly following all the steps needed (depending on ur device,g3,g4,etc). If ur able to upgrade without problems, then you'll love xplore

Probably as many users as options...
I'd go for Faria's last release - fast & stable.
But bear in mind - I haven't tested Xplore yet...

I've tried most of them, and i prefer the mb rom even more than the xplore one. Each to there own..

Faria's "The Real Thing!"

nottoosmart vanilla or XPlore get my vote. Both are very good and fast. Faria's "the real thing" is nice but has more stuff in it than I want. Waiting to see his Vanilla with possible AKU 3.3 comm stack to allow using newer radios...

Are you looking for a fully loaded rom or a vanilla?
For Vanilla, both Xplore and NotTooSmart's vanilla are extremely popular. I found NotTooSmart's faster of the two due to performance tweaks but Xplore offers more free RAM.
For fully loaded, Faria is well known for quality roms in this community however, VoIP support has been removed from his "The Real Thing". There's also the recent release from PDAMobiz which is based on Xplore.
At the end, it also depends on what your uses are...

and all the roms here in this thread will work on g3?...(had g4 but got a brand new phone and it is a g3)

Faria's "The Real Thing!"

I think besides a vote, a mini-review will be helpful.
I'll start with what I have tried:
1) RUU_Prophet_G3_2151327_AKU23_023021_P16MB_PDAMobiz_v2307 (not in this list)
Plenty of extra software. Some useful, some not. A matter of individual preference. Speed overclocked by default, but can easily be reverted. Pretty stable, a minor glitch when opening word files, pword opens and closes. Another tap would then open the file. (could be due to my device and not the ROM itself). Speed is OK, can't really say it's faster than the official 2.15 ROM. My major dislike is the program memory. After installing all my apps such as calligrapher & voice command, I'm left with 14+MB after a soft reset. After opening up more and ore applications, it will go down to 3-4MB very quickly and some of the progs will automatically close. In comparison, this was not so severe when I had the official 2.15 ROM.
2) RUU-Prophet-G3-AKU2.2-2.20-2.47.21-Jester-b1
New OS. Feels faster than the PDAMobiz ROM even though this is standard 12MB pagepool. No extra software. Stable. No issues so far, but I've only been using it for several days now.
Next to try: LvsW Edition: RUU_Prophet_220734_2207114_024721 (AKU2.3)
If anyone like to compile their reviews in this thread, it'll definitely help lots of people.
You should test all of them if you want to get relaiable results. Otherwise people will only choose the ROM they are currently using, whitout ever touching they other ROM's
For this you should create some kind of performance test procedure.
If you can make this reliaable then you might use it as a standard in the PPC world Since I havn't seen any test procedure to test performance of different ROM's.
I've seen benchmark results, but they were compared to WM2003 devices. So you should have one made just for OMap processors. Then you also have the issue between the results and "daily use", like menu speed etc.
Maybe we can set up some kind of procedure here on XDA DEVELOPERS?
Yes i think a benchmark would be excellent...
So-so
I've been confident over the years to rom-cooking and tweaking devices (long live my old hima) but with so many bugs in the Prophet's roms, even the official ones! it's hard to reccommend actually those "beta" versions, each with it's own set of bugs.
Actually we are forced to choose from the set of bugs you can live with! USB not charging, BT Active Sync profile dissapearing, Slooowww performance, undocumented Registry limits, (Contast size for instance) and so on.
So my vote was on the "official" Qtek rom, at least until I can cook my own ROM and have control over what I drop on my Prophet.
Anyway, impressive work from jesterz, lvsw, the pdamobiz guys and the rest of you for giving us all those roms to try and enjoy tweaking, it's somewhat adictive!
i go test lvsw 2.3 it's very good ?

I voted for LvSW 2.3, but I'm actually running one of his earlier versions, with the old RadioRom and ExtRom. Things are pretty stable, if slow. I have a G3 version.
Would it be worth my while to upgrade to the current LVSW 2.3.1? Is there a big radio improvement from 2.19 to 2.47.21? Will there be an upgrade to 2.3.1 to fix the frozen input method problem?

WM6 or is it just WM5 skinned?

I'm a bit confused, and i'm unsure to tell the difference. With all the roms floating out there in the forums, are they just WM 5.0 roms skinned? or actually a WM 6.0 rom?
Which ROM in particular are you referring to?? Faria's and mun's are both WM6 -- as are the MB rom and the Underground ROM. I know for sure all these are WM6 because I've flashed them all to my phone.
There are two versions of WM6 out there
1)The first one was a Japanese WM6 ROM releases for the HTC Hermes (Cingular 8525). This was then ported to the Wizard.
2)Faria says his latest rom uses the WM6 rom that is intended for release for the HTC Wizard (Cingular 8125).
Since we are on the subject,
what are the main advantage of WM6 over WM5?
I flashed MB rom about a month ago, and I use it for about 1 week before switching back to Faria's old ROM. People talk about speed, but in my opinion, it's about the same and a bit slower.
Maybe it's because I'm not used to the new system, but I think that some of the functions are more hassle, for example, the pin code. In WM5, u just put in your PIN and ta da, automatic you are logged in. in WM6, u have to push the unlock button after u keyed in your Pin. Another one is the message button at the left top of your wizard. in WM5, you push it and it automatically go to the last view message, i.e. either text message or SMS or email. in WM6 everytime you use the button, u have to choose where to go..
ANother things, most of WM6 released is pretty bare, that's maybe some of us find it faster. Since I'm already pampered with a lot of utils from the previous ROm, I found it too much hassle to go find and install all this necessary application into my PPC.
Just my thought

First, some of the things you mentioned about WM6 are configurable (like going to messaging and having to choose. I turned that off so it works like WM5 for me).
As for being bare, yes some are and thats what some like. If you don't want bare, then try the Faria "the real thing" WM6. Its very similar to AKU 3.3 in that it has lots of stuff 9but not as much stuff ans WM6 is bigger and he couldn't put everything in it).
Good luck.

Changing WM6 ROM

I currently have "the real thing" flashed on my g3 MDA US. Is there a better ROM out there now or should i just stick with it for now?
It is all a matter of personal preference. Some people like clean roms (vanilla) that dont have many apps pre installed on them. The clean roms are used by many to be able to "cook" their own roms( add apps etc to them). From what I see X-plore 1.1 is a pretty popular rom and The WM6 Business Edition is growing as well, but once again it is a matter of preference, I'd suggest that you go out and try the rom for yourself and you be the judge of what you like...

Faria's ROM kitchen Vs Crossbow Reloaded

Is crossbow reloaded an updated version of Faria's PRO ROM Kitchen? if so is it better than the rom kitchen? like more stable, faster, more memory and such?

Crossbow Reloaded started straight from the Faria Rom Kitchen base. Pretty much 1.0 was just adding apps into that base rom (and putting in a newer black comm manager and the 10 button registry change).
In 1.5 I went in and tweaked some system stuff that I wanted changed (Like where it defaults to English (United Kingdom) for Regional Settings) and added some registry tweaks and fixed a package or two (and upgraded some packages). Also I moved to the edhaas RomPacker kitchen to gain some space in 1.5
In 1.7 I did a lot of compression, pulled Office out and replaced it with the 2007 version in Pandora, and more registry tweaks, and such to correct things in 1.0 and 1.5 and add to the rom. Unfortunatley 1.7 (while it was great for me and many others) caused a lot of people real pain with the phone pad disappearing...
In the public beta 1.7.1 I went pretty much back to 1.5, switched to teh Core Kitchen (just gave me an excuse to use it ), and rebuilt what 1.7 was but with less compression (removed almost all compression I had done on DLLs) and fixed a few bugs I found. Also had to remove Adobe Reader since I lost the compression gains in 1.7. Its only been out since Saturday, but so far the reports are mostly positive so I'll probably call it a final release for that version (dialpad issue seems to be gone).
Is my rom _more_ stable than the base Faria one? I doubt it. I ran on the Faria Beta Vanilla for over a week and I don't think I had to soft reset it once (except when I was doing something that needed it). 1.7 and 1.7.1 to me feel faster than the base vanilla in the kitchen though (I never overclocked 1.7 version, and have just started overclocking the 1.7.1 but not sure I see a difference so may turn it back off again). I have had a couple of lockups (Opera running over WiFi has locked up on me twice, but I had that in Xplore1.1 and NTS too so that may be a "feature" of WM6 and Opera over WiFi).
Oh, last thing... As I state in every Crossbow Reloaded release, I was not trying to make a faster rom, or one with more memory. I wanted a stable rom that performed to my liking and had apps in it I would use (although 1.7 has stuff I'll probably never use, but were added for those that requested it in 1.5 and I didn't mind putting them in).
Yea opera lockes up on me all the time no matter which ROM i use, but only the Beta 8.65 version. So would you reccommend switching from Faria's Kitchen ROM to Crossbow reloaded 1.7? if all i want is more memory and speed but keeping about everything else the same? or is the difference not really worth the hassle of reinstalling all my settings and programs and such? The only reason i am considering switching is that i see people everywhere on the forum with crossbow reloaded and dont seem to see anyone with Faria's rom kitchen. And every person i have seen says that your ROM is very good. I'm pretty satisfied with Faria's ROM but if i can keep everything just about the same and get more memory and speed then i would switch to that ROM. so I would like to know if Crossbow reloaded 1.7 or 1.7.1 is that ROM?
BTW: thanks for the really informative post.
I don't remember what the memory is when you flash the Faria ROM from the kitchen. With Crossbow Reloaded you'll have about 28meg of program memory (for some that is low, but its fine for me as performance is still very good IMO). The newer / vanilla roms will give you more program memory than mine, so if you are concerned about memory, not sure mine is what will fit your need. The key for me is after I flash this a number of apps I use are right there in the rom ready to go.
Also, I think a lot of people don't have the Faria Vanilla on their phone as they are scared of the concept of the ROM Kitchen. Crossbow Reloaded 1.0 was sort of an answer to that, but having a pre-built Faria style rom built off his vanilla. 1.5 and 1.7 has diverged from that concept as its sort of become a different rom (still off that base, but some of the base has changed and been updated).
Really up to you. If you are happy with the Faria Vanilla from the RK, then stay with it as its a VERY good rom (and why I chose it to base my first cooking attempt off of it). Its been awhile since I was on that rom, but as I recall, I feel mine is faster now as I always ran with overclocking on that one, where I don't on this one (Ok I am on 1.7.1 now but not sure I really have to). But its up to you to decide if its worth the time to switch.
While I had good luck with 1.7, I'm not sure I'd recommend that one, but instead 1.7.1. But again, thats only if you choose to switch roms.
NOTE: 1.7.1 is beta. A couple of bugs have now been reported (WM5torage appears not to work and I've confirmed this now too). So you may want to review the thread for it before committing to it (and hopefully others can weigh in with pros and cons).
Alright thanks for the info, ill wait till you get the final version of your 1.7.1 out and then ill probably switch. as 28MB of RAM is really good for me.

Overview of the many roms created here and a vote for the best rom for the Universal

Guys there are a lot of roms created by the genious minds of rom cooks here. id like everyone to share there view of the roms overview and a vote for the best rom cooked for the Universal. Sounds fun huh!
my list (sorry if I missed anyone)
ROM really depends on your needs . If the cook has put in the apps you use, go for his rom. Otherwise it takes up more space adding your own apps - or alternatively go for rDosti/B&L vanilla and add all your own.
The free memory is important to me (being a 64MB Uni owner!!), and I have recorded the free memory on a clean install with no SD card in.
I want working camera, TCMD TCPMP and Route66N7 to work properly (which likes its memory!). I don't use wkTask, but prefer QuickMenu or currently playing with Battery Status (but after making own theme with weather, this took up too much program memory, and although looked nice I decided that I needed functional and not eye candy!). Fast is also good . I also need my Blade BT headset to work with my BT GRPS mouse.
My observations (in no particular order):
Tomal 7.7 OS 19900 (19900'2), 27.8 MB free (program memory) here
-this is stable and has all apps I like *my favourite* (also has flash-disk)
EFN 2.4 OS 19588 (19900'3), 27.4 MB free here
-seems stable, need to add few apps (eg, TCMD, TCPMP), but has VC - keeping my eye on this! (more of want than need as I don't get 3G at home!)
rDosti 9 OS 19188 (19174), >33.9 MB free here
-seems stable, vanilla so need to add all apps you want (incl. Word, Excel, .NET etc). Built on my old favourite ROM from thingonaspring (below) - but with same problem. Can't get Blade (BT headset) to work
PDAVIET 2.61 OS 19949, 28.6 MB free here
-hangs occasionally, couldn't change alarms
-not a rom cooker on this forum, so feedback is useless from here!
Mo3ulla 1.5 OS 19588, 26.97 MB free here
-seems stable, but was disappointed with free program mem
Thingonaspring 41.28 OS 19188 (19174), 29.8 MB free here
-stable, excellent free memory, settings/buttons had no lock or backlight, some components getting old (TCMD) - has real VGA (if you like that sort of thing!)
-seems to have stopped cooking any more universal rom's - anyone heard from thing?
JWRights here
-no information, except was slow in dealing my cards in Patiences game
Beasty&Laurentius 2.08.01 Business here
-they also have newer test version and older FullFlavour/Vanilla versions, and were my favorite cookers
-beasty still pops back to help, and may produce newer rom, but has gone on to some wierd htc machineAdvice: pick your ROM(s), and help the cookers sort out bugs & features by encouraging them - and they can use this information with others too.
Hope this helps someone
great
thanks jonmorgan for your effort and views. come on guys more overviews will help our good rom cookers to improve their cooking by giving out your reviews of their great and effortfull work..
My vote goes for....
Ranju´s v7.6 & v7.7 definetly!
Cheers!
Ranju's 7.6 here!
Using Tomals 7.7 I must say, eaven after testing some others...
This is the best.
Its stable, fast, i love flashdisk and storage space
for this poll i Vote for Tomal/Ranju 7.7

--- Did you try 9.1 (it has extra support for BT mouse and other BT devices. I would suggest trying that and then letting me know if it doesnt work with your Blade... I believe 9.1 should fix that (the main reason i released it).

great replies guys
man you guys are great keep on helping our friends, the genius rom cookers for their hard work thank you cookers without you all we could never make the universal the way it is today. thanks all guys for their overviews.

That's one of the fastest roms or may be the FASTEST rom ever created for the Uni, and no, the free program memory after reboot is 26-27+ MB with some programs in start up on 64 MB Universal! You guys don't write some stuff before test it

Yes, I can also confirm this rom is THE FASTEST so far for universal, it is very stable and was the only rom that did not give me phone hang-ups, but because it is so vanilla I had a few issues getting some parts of phone to work...so had to switch back to 7.7 rom

Sorry, I did test it. I have now re-flashed and can report it to be 26.97 (I have edited my post).
This is strange - the total is only 46.27, where-as other ROM flashers are getting their totals much higher. I wonder if Mo3ulla got this higher, the free program memory would also go up.
I don't know how to test speed, except if my card game goes slow
Tomal is the best
I also have flashed tomal ranju's 7.7 rom and its really col and stable but what i noticed is it drains my battery very much is this normal or have i done something wrong?
anyways ranju 7.7 is the best for me.
and guys keep up the great work
Well, Ran's 7.7 is the one I like the most now as he provides me the apps I need. No wasting time to install , just up rom and use. I'm looking forward to the official release of version 8.0 from Tomal. Stable, no irritating problems though there're small problems with my EXEC, not sure whether those happen to other universals.
Cheers!
wm5
im going back to the wm5 aku3.5
my prblem is solved in sdhc driver. damn it it was sdbus.dll and sdmemory.dll after all.
ryt now im sticking on video call my uni is lame w/o it.
for cooked ROM probably ranju 7.7
but i got all apps for wm6 the contol panel thing so i used rdosti clean ROM v5-v10
ill wait rdosti v15 it could be 64mb free of RAM i think. joke
nice looking:
pamquang diamond rom
cons: freezes, call slow response. sometimes shutdown automatically..
efn video call- it didnt work on mine
rdosti - lots of memory free but apps its up to you spot wer the good version is because my opera 9.5 build 405 not run on v9.1..
hey anybody cud share a files/hacks to run opera 9.5 on wm5.

That's the main point! Most people didn't try all ROMs and therefore their oppinion isn't accurate...
I've tried all, except rDosti v10 and my favorite are rDosti v9.1 (I don't use because we can't install VCall out cab) (probably the fastest) and PDAVIET 2.61 OS 19949 (the 2nd fastest ROM)!
PS: I don't have problems to set the alarm on PDAVIET's ROM!
Ranju 7.7 .......
Tried Darkforce, mu3ulla and rDosti.
rDosti is my favourite, because
- his ongoing support
- quick problem solving with new ROM
- a lot of free program memory
Only things I miss at the moment:
- Flash disk (where is it? What is it?)
- good BT support (Please leave BT enabled when connection to my GPS!)
But, hey, he's posting a new ROM every day, so maybe next week?
