Things to do with PPC w/o internet - General Topics

I'm looking for things to do to keep me occupied on trips where I don't have wifi. i know there are games but i dont really like playing games that require a stylus (i HATE using the stylus and it ruins my screen protector). theres always music and videos which i've got, but what do people like to do offline with their pocket pc's or phones?

You can try reading e-books using some of the readers (MobiPocket reader, microsoft reader or Haali reader). You can carry all of your books with you and read them anytime. It is quite convenient.

You can play games that you had installed, you can see movies that you upload to your PDA.....

ebooks rule,
also watching movies is the best if you have a seat on a tram, train or bus (just watch the content)
ive also done python programming,
on games there is a few that i dont mind using the stylus with,
check out one called Slay thats turn based so isnt so bad also dont mind the game "the quest" im playing that one for the second time at the moment.

Is there any way to watch You tube video?

I was trying to open with Opera, IE, WMP. Don't really know which application I need to watch it...I believe there is a simple answer for the question. But, I just don't know it...
So, no1 knows?
Watched this topic?

Have you read this?
it seems that all the solutions there are for downloading, converting and then watching. But I need it to work on-fly, without downloading, the way we watch it on our PCs.
Now Windows Mobile Phones Can, so why can't we?
I know I'm getting sick of seeing those stupid Verizon adds for the EnV that shows the huge YouTube logo on the screen, and wondering why my WM phone can't. I know my phone can do hundreds, if not thousands of things, that the EnV can't, but as long as there is ONE thing that a non WM phone can do that mine can't, I feel like less of a man. Where do I sign up mfrazz's 12 step program?
and is there any way to watch p2p tv on ppc like on pc?
I just intalled the newest version on Opera 8.65... its in beta right now... BUT IT PLAYS YOUTUBE videos!!!! WooHoo!!!
It has flash support built in and works nice!!!http://ppcwarez.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=19732
try..
Go this site with your device browser. You can even download the videos. And you can search grouper, youtube etc.

why it keeps asking for java or flashplayer (under wm6)?
does anyone know how to format the window so that I can watch the whole video (on youtube) using Opera?
Orb Lets You Play YouTube on Your PPC
I use a program called Orb to play YouTube on my PPC. It loads on your home PC, then you use any PPC browser to access it. It's pretty dang sweet. I have had hardly any problems with it.
orb.com
Well, there are a lot of ways to watch you tube video offline on your PPC. For example, you can just download a youtube video using youtube grabber on your PC then convert it to avi using some endcoder, and then watch it with TCMP or Core PLayer.
However, the main point of the thread is to get a way of watching youtube video on-fly being online with you PPC.
So, far the best way of doing that is using new Opera. However, it's not a perfect way
orb is the way to go. orb does it on the fly also. check it out.

It really is. The only problem I found about it is that the PC must always run the application and be online to be able to watch video from PPC, which is sometimes a problem for me. The rest is awsome.
the other nice thing is you can also view your webcam anytime also. I use it for sucurity purposes . very nice feature.

I think downloads are the only way to watch you tube videos. Try this site: mymobileclips.com, free registration, specify the format you want your videos, and you can get Google, Myspace, Ifilm, Dailymotion, Break, Metacafe, too.
I personally believe ORB is by fair the best thing to cross streaming\PPC lines...I have absolutely no problem watching youtube on my PPC using orb, and talk about an iPhone?? Who needs that when you have an 250 gig hdd with movies, music, pictures, and then are able to watch your local cable service thats at home while your out and about on a lunch break, and then to be able to access your PC and browse and download files from anywhere............ORB IS GOD when it comes to media and mobile devices....not to mention to gain access on my xbox 360 using orb as well without switching my external from device to device, and not using the lame media center....orbs great....just thought id mention it.

I've been trying orb and im a bit new to it. But from my understanding, orb will only work if you pre-selected the videos on your PC first right?
Is there any way to watch ANY youtube video? For example if you searched for one and want to watch it, you cant use the standard browser to see it. How does orb come into play for watching videos on demand? Will it only allow us to see videos that we have pre-added on our pc with the orb plugin?

Orb defines videos, pics, audio, files, etc defined in a specifc folder....when you setup orb it then scans the folders to save the content locations onto the orb server, so what ever you put in a specified folder, orb will pull it in for you.
With youtube, just download the plugin on orbs website for IE, install.....then login into orb on your ppc.....go to videos....then it comes up with an search for youtube....google...yahoo...etc, type in what you want to search, it then show it infront of you, click what you want to watch, then click play stream.
No pre-added video for youtube, just an search as if you were at your desktop.

What can you get your fuze to do?

So, I've got my Fuze... customised... flashed numerous roms, downloaded tons of games and other software... I've figured out a few tricks... And it does a lot of really handy stuff... I can edit schedules for work, carry around all of my information etc... But people constantly ask me... "what do you need a phone that does all of that for?"
So I was wondering if anyone uses their phone to do anything exceptionally cool...
Just looking to get the most out of my device and always looking for new things to tinker with...
Didn't really see a thread dedicated to ideas like this so I thought I'd post one...
i use my phone to play xbox live at work.....oh yes!!!! thank god for internet sharing
I bypass my work's proxy to play online games at work and browse websites they won't let me
Oh, and I sometimes use it to call.
mostly use internet to stream music at work, but that's if i can get a dadgum 3g signal
but i have used it as a level to hang a pic before. that drew some wtfs
I use it to provide near instant support for my Web site's readers. (It's a news site... serves a very general audience.) With my mobile device, I take readers who are angry because they can't find something and have all but given up, and turn them around with my quicker than quick replies. We use exchange, so the real push notifications make near instant replies possible.
Other than that, I use it for true mobile podcast listening. No need to synch my device with a computer to have the latest podcasts.
I also use the device to run our news organization's twitter and facebook updates, as well as live wireless video reporting using Qik.
So, for a newsie site operator, this is a damn good device. With a keyboard.
Play NES and Gameboy ROMS. Browse flash websites with skyfire. Draw using mobile paint programs.

There are no phones out there that can do this. Its mostly handy for showing off your work in a 3d environment, but you could feasibly create something on the spot as well.
Oh and taking panorama pictures.
whats the best snes or gb emulator for us anyway?
I use Winamp remote to watch tv/movies...decent quality too.
I use it as a graphing calculator.
well, it makes a dandy paper weight. it's also a very cool alarmclock, I use it to read books, I have even used to for a "avoiding irate wife" tool, and it's always been an awesome "irritate wife" tool. it's a gps thingie, a great money eater, and it works awesome to awe and cow the technically illiterate.
lets see
- upload pics of my one year old to facebook, as soon as I take 'em - instant share with all my family and friends!
- upload videos directly to facebook using the new Facebook app
- my defacto ebook reader when I travel
- my MP3 player for my gym work outs
- watch hulu.com on skyfire to catch missed TV epsiodes (on the elliptical)
- podcasts, newsfeeds
- FM radio for listening to the TV in my gym
- i use OneNote Mobile to make all my lists - grocery, shopping, important numbers etc
- English-Spanish dictionary, when I travel
- traffic updates on Google maps
- Weather and Stocks on TF3D
- Tomtom navigation, when I really need to ASK for directions

With this, I can use my phone as a remote control to Windows Media Player or Itunes on my computer. It's great if you link up your computer to a big screen or stream music through an Apple Airport. I don't even have to get up to change a track, pause a video, or fast forward.
Wake On LAN is great too so I can turn on my computer from virtually anywhere in the house using my phone
Have it Fart!!
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=61479
Let's see:
- Watch movies / series in the train
- Listen to music
- Check internet for information / news / train delays
- GPS in Google maps let me find things easily. With lattitude
my wife knows where I am without calling, which can be good and bad
- ScummVm plays me Monkey Island 1 and 2
- I can use it as a lightsaber
- Appointments & tasks
- Notes
- Use it to control my home computer with remote desktop
- Oh wait, it can call and sms too.
How did you use it to level a picture? Is this an app?
Thanks,
Dave
I'd love to use mine for some of this stuff. Now if I could only find something to get rid of those 40-50 calls I get a day.
when i did the level thingy i just used the gsensor calibration thingy as i didnt have this

ooh ooh and you can use the fuze to read them 2d barcodes. i grabbed the quickmark freeware one. and i found a code on a box of insulin. it only had the lot and expiration date but it was dang cool

My Stuff
Well, I use my Touch Pro for fun and work:
Custom software that hits databases, including SQL Mobile and HandDBase, to maintain expenses/income and clients for partner's business, and my own wine list, cocktail/mixed drinks applications, and such
Update serveral blogs directly
Goof off on the web, and TV, and Instant Messenger
Use to get several different emails, including work, so I can pretend I am working from a bar
Used as a flashlight with "Torch" - comes in handy when sneaking around in the dark, or looking for dropped items in dark areas
it has my music on it so it is my portable MP3 player that I connect to my car and everything
Stream TV, some movies, video clips (yes, even porn)
Edited Microsoft presentations, Excel files, and documents for work and clients
use as GPS navigation in my car, in case you didn't know, some software will work with the GPS in the phone but will use a "voice" to read the directions, and if you just plug your phone into your car Aux. port, it will come across the speakers in your car. Pretty cool to show off.
Of course use it as portable storage, no longer carry around the stupid USB drive sticks
So, some is fun, some is cool, most is work stuff. LOL

[Q] just got my g tablet and need a little help

First off can't put it down, this thing is insane an I didn't even hack it yet. (Waiting to go buy a micro SD card) Got a couple of questions. I use iTunes and would like to stream my library to my g tablet, is there a compadiable app,or do ibhave to move my library to windows media player, if so is there an app that will allow me to control my library like iPhones remote app? And lastly any kick a$$ apps out there? In the short time I've had it found a killer emulator and spent the day kicking it old school...lol thanks in advanced to all who respond.
Unfortunately I can't suggest an iTunes sync app as I don't use it.
As for killer apps, you might want to mention some of your interests in a tablet - ie. video playback (Rockplayer), ebooks (Aldiko), comics (ACV or JJComics Viewer) etc.
Sync
Try doubletwist for syncing your music (but not streaming)

Podcasts
Any suggestions on getting podcasts to sync? Using doubletwist doesn't exactly work properly; audio podcasts show up as playlists, not podcasts, which is OK, but video podcasts don't work at all.
Does anyone use any other program that will actually automatically download podcasts? It seems like most of the apps I've looked at are written for phones with 3g connections to listen to streaming podcasts, which the G-tab obviously doesn't do.
thanks

You can use .podkast or google listen.
I've used BeyondPod previously and works pretty well. It would be perfect if it were free, but i guess $7.00 is not too much of a price to pay after the trial is over.
Google listen seems to work for some people, but not others; I am apparently one of the others, because it will only stream and I can't figure out how to make it download, even though I've told it to do so.
I'm thinking of trying beyondpod or doggcatcher, but don't really want to pay until I know they'll work. Guess I'll go for the free trial.
Thanks!

What is everyone using the TF for?

So I've had my TF for about 2 months..thou I love the convenience of instant on, I've noticed I mostly use it for web surfing or reading forums.
What is everyone else doing with their TF often? Is there a good app that I should have or use?
I mostly use mine to surf the web, but also do a lot of gaming and watch movies/series!
Web surfing, remote desktop (leave my heavy laptop at home), taking notes in school, programming (terminal emulator), reading notes, occassionally watching movies.
I use mine for surfing the web, light gaming (shadowgun!), and watching anime/shows via netflix. I also have a couple Japanese apps to help me study. I have most of my textbooks on here as well. Other than that I use it to monitor business stuff.
Note taking, Book reading, gaming (N64oid and shadowgun), Web surfing, Video watching, music player ect
Best Device EVER
E-mail, remote control servers via Teamviewer, stock market, Netflix and/or movies I ummm...legally acquire through completely valid sources
Sometimes music too. Bought Tune In Radio Pro which I like much better than Pandora.
My tf
Android:
The usual web surf check emails play games watch movies draw play with setting and tweaks
Ubuntu:
Do write ups and work with libre office visit websites that are not so great on the android side watch movies that are not encoded for the tf with vlc and heaps of other stuff
With ubuntu and honeycomb ive replaced my netbook and i have splash top remote so if anything to hard pops up i can access the pc at home
Cant wait for icys though then it will be best of both worlds and goodbye 3.2 bugs
Btw for those using remote desktop. Which app is your favorite? I use Splashtop mostly, sometimes TeamViewer when Splashtop is too slow. I love Splashtop, but I'm looking for alternatives with better right-click support. Holding (which triggers left-click too) is just not cutting it.

LOL! I didn't know it came bundled. Bought it from the Market first day I got it *facepalm* Oh well, glad to support them.
I use mine to surf the web, especially XDA-Developers site while away from home. I'm a movie fanatic, I own over 2,000 movies and transcoding some of them for my TF and watching them while away from home is fantastic. I also keep track of my calorie and exorcise training on it. Play a few games here and there. Perfect for checking my social networks.
I primarily use mine for reading through the hundreds of .pdf articles I have to read every week.
...and for playing a few games from time to time when I don't feel like reading anymore.

[Q] Any good apps on the market?

Ive been looking for some decent apps for my Nexus one and i have been able to find very few that i like. If anyone can give me some apps that are handy or games that are fun it will be gladly appreciated.
I would think in order to get a decent response, you would want to narrow down what it is you are looking to do.
If you can think of it, it has an app. If it doesn't......start learning how to design apps and make some coin
But here goes with a few of my faves............
AudioGalaxy
For portable music from my HDD. Full access to my home music collection.
The best app in my opinion is AudioGalaxy. It has magic metadata that somehow seems to get all names and artwork right. It ports into your personal collection and can be streamed over data or wifi. You can make playlists on the go that store in a folder on your PC at home. It is simply amazing, and with even just a decent signal, it streams virtually flawlessly.
I can't say enough about it, other than GET IT !!
To top it all off, it is 100 % free. But I found it so good that I actually bought the add ons just to support the development of the app.
Hands down my favorite music app, and in the top 5 of my all time apps.
AirDroid
Wifi transfer your media/files from or to your Android device and PC. Uses your browser and has a cool interface that you can shuffle around like a desktop. Hasn't dropped a transfer yet. Free. Very cool app.
WiFi Explorer PRO
Same as Airdroid pretty much. Works awesome. Great support. I bought this before I found AirDroid. Both are great and transfer fairly fast for WiFi. Interfaces thru browser as well. Very good app.
ES File Explorer
Hands down my favorite file management app. Transfer files between phone/home windows shares/ftp server/bluetooth shares/online storage drives.
One of the most popular on the market. Somewhat customizable. Plain and simple it is THE file managment app in my opinion.
Tablet Talk
This app allows your non-3G/data enabled tablet (wifi only), to link via wifi or bluetooth to your data/wifi smartphone.
If you have your cell phone charging in another room and on, you can connect your tablet to it, and you can then text or call from it using your data/contract plan.
Very cool app. Comes in handy in various situations.
iMediaShare
VERY cool app !! this app acts as both a server or a client on your network. It can pick up other dlna/upnp servers, and connect as a client. Or it can act as a server, porting various media shares/local files to a specified device like a PS3 or a 360.
What is REALLY cool, is that you can web stream various websites, like YouTube or HD Nation by browsing the site on the app, finding the vid/s you want, and point it to the PS3. You then go to you media server section on your PS3 or 360, and voila, that video is onscreen.
You can search YouTube, and then view the whole search query. As well, on the PS3 you can copy these vids to your HDD.
What is truly amazing is the amount of web sites to choose from.
Motorz HD
Vimeo
Revision HD
YouTube
The White House channel
Nasa
TED
CBS
....and the list goes on and on and is growing all the time.
You can stick with the free (lite) version which has 80% available and standard definition video. If you pay the 2 bucks or whatever for the full version, you can access a few more channels but you get the HD channels as well.
I have a whack of HD music vids from YouTube, stored on my PS3 now because of the ease of this app. Simply awesome !!!!
OverSkreen
The coolest browser on the market ! It'a a floating browser. (I would link you to my YouTube clip on it, but I am still a noob so unfortunately I can't link you any of these and you have to Google them yourself)
Anyways, back on track.
Overskreen floats on your desktop to give you a windows effect. You can run one app, and have your Overskreen window tucked in the corner watching a mini youtube vid. Hard to describe, I suggest checking it out.
Very innovative. The app is getting better everyday, but is still new so it has some bugs. Either way, it may change the future of smartphones and tablets. Check it out.
Games
GTA III - no need for explanation. Only game I have. Pretty sweet. Costs a few bucks but worth it.
Wallpaper
Jumpgate - simply one of the best wallpapers for your Android . Burns your battery a little more, but it's definitely cool.
So there's a few for you. Not sure if you are looking for something else, but these are some of the most used and actually useful apps in my inventory.
I can add to this later as I think of more.
BUT........
If you really want to have fun and tinker. Custom ROM's is where it's at.
My Telus Mobility Nexus now has a lockscreen carrier name of:
Smell-us Slo-bility
...and my opening boot animation is the little Androids on the the Tron bikes that collide in an X shape and explode into the Galaxy Nexus logo.
Good luck. You've dived into a world of fun simply by picking Android.
